[Bug 476652] Re: sound stops and begins clicking and popping

2010-07-01 Thread craptree
I have a ALC268 based sound card, and I also face the same audio stutter
problem in various programmes such as VLC and Stepmania.

Removing pulse audio, and having programmes connect to ALSA instead
fixed the issue.

Same problem here on newest Lucid Ubuntu, and in Lucid with 2.6.35 PPA
kernel. Also on Dell Mini 9.

This problem sounds very similar to the one listed here -
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/480929 - both
problems occur when headphone is plugged in on a Dell Mini 9.

[Bug 502433] Re: Lucid: b43 fatal DMA error on Dell Mini 9

2010-05-05 Thread craptree
Hmm did you update your initramfs? The compilation script doesnt seem to do it
properly itself, so you have to do it manually.
in a command prompt type
sudo update-initramfs -vuk all

Failing that, does dmesg mention anything about b43?
in a command prompt type
dmesg | grep b43

and paste the output here

Thanks
Riz

[Bug 502433] Re: Lucid: b43 fatal DMA error on Dell Mini 9

2010-03-04 Thread craptree
HURRAAHHH SUCCE - 10 hours later and still streaming internet
without any disconnects or errors! Seems that auto fall back to PIO
doesnt work yet, but we can force pio from a config file in
etc/modprobe, with the compat wireless pack.

The compat wireless in ubuntu lucid (linux backports wireless) seems to
crash my computer, so I compiled mine from scratch.

This fix worked for me on 2.6.32 kernel on Ubuntu Karmic,

For those that also want the fix heres a short guide.

Go to: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download
and follow their guide to compile and install the newest bleeding edge
compat-wireless-2.6

Go to: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43
and follow their guide to obtain the newest firmware (ie the 4.178.10.4
version from openwrt), if you don't have it already

Once installed, update initramfs with
sudo update-initramfs -vuk all

Finally make a file called b43 to force pio from /etc/modprobe.d with the
command:
echo options b43 pio=1 ~/b43.conf sudo mv ~/b43.conf /etc/modprobe.d/

Cant post to Launchpad due to down time. So will paste message here ;)

Hey hey good news. I compiled the bleeding edge linux compat wireless
which, if i understand correctly, should be based on the wireless testing
git, and so have the patches. I downloaded the pack from
http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download.

So far so good. Seems to be working, with no hickups yet. But it's early
days. I'll leave it on overnight downloading something and tell you how it
goes tomorrow!

Riz

Will keep you updated :)

I was able to get ndiswrapper setup and working, and it seems to be
fine, though I'd rather get b43 working.

Forgot to mention, the compat wireless package failed to properly update my
initramfs. If anyone else decides to try the pack, be sure to run [code]sudo
update-initramfs -vuk all[/code]

Hey hey good news. I compiled the bleeding edge linux compat wireless
which, if i understand correctly, should be based on the wireless testing
git, and so have the patches. I downloaded the pack from
 http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download.

So far so good. Seems to be working, with no hickups yet. But it's early
days. I'll leave it on overnight downloading something and tell you how it
 goes tomorrow!

 Will keep you updated :)

I was able to get ndiswrapper setup and working, and it seems to be
fine, though I'd rather get b43 working.

[Bug 502433] Re: Lucid: b43 fatal DMA error on Dell Mini 9

2010-03-03 Thread craptree
The acpi off command doesn't work for me either.

Jeff looking further at these patches it seems that they are designed to
be applied to the wireless-testing source. Another patch also recently
surfaced to auto drop to PIO after DMA fail on the b43.

These patches are already applied to the wireless-testing source git
tree. More information on the git can be found here
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/linville/wireless-
testing.git;a=summary

the git location is
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/linville/wireless-
testing.git

If I have time I will try to compile it, but I have little experiance of
these things and will probably fail!

[Bug 477106] Re: [regression] lucid alpha-2 and earlier freeze upon suspend with sd card plugged in with some hardware

2010-03-02 Thread craptree
Same problem on Dell mini 9 running Karmic, with 2.6.32 Lucid kernel.

Other users with same problem can be found here.
http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/ubuntu-netbook-remix/14722-suspend-hibernate-mini-9-broken.html

They have a simple work around there where pm-suspend unmounts the card
before suspend.

[Bug 502433] Re: Lucid: b43 fatal DMA error on Dell Mini 9

2010-02-27 Thread craptree
The patched linked earlier does not enable PIO on the B43 for everyone.
It simply allows PIO to be enabled for the B43 with a boot time option
in the module/conf. This would be an ideal work around for now until the
B43 driver is properly fixed.

Maybe Ubuntu kernel maintainers could apply the patch to the Lucid
kernel, or someone could patch a kernel and put it up on a ppa
somewhere?

[Bug 510173] Re: Brightness does not change

2010-02-19 Thread craptree
Similar problem since upgrading to 9.10. Setting brightness in gnome-
power-manager does not do anything, and using the fn keys to lower the
brightness works strangely - pressing the fn brightness down button
takes brightness down to 50% but then starts increasing it again to
100%, all under the same button.

I am using Dell Mini 9 with an Intel i945GME graphics chip. This problem
occurs on both 2.6.31 stock kernel and the updated 2.6.32 kernel i am
currently using.

[Bug 502433] Re: Lucid: b43 fatal DMA error on Dell Mini 9

2010-02-12 Thread craptree
Same problem here on Dell Mini 9. Not really a regression for me though.
This has ALWAYS been a problem with the b43 driver. I use the bcmwl-
kernel-souce package (which installs the official STA wireless driver).

Current versions of the b43 have problems communicating with this
particular LP-PHY card via DMA. The patch to enable PIO options on boot
would be great. Patch can be found here
http://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/66372/

With this PIO can be activated with the following boot/modprobe.d command, for
people with cards experiencing this problem.
options b43 pio=1

This command does not work at present as the patch is not applied to the
Lucid kernel.

[Bug 493059] [NEW] kernel 2.6.32-7.9 b43 wifi module has LP-PHY chipset support disabled

2009-12-05 Thread craptree
Public bug reported:

The 2.6.32 kernel is great as it adds preliminary support for many low
power b43 chipsets (tested on the 4312 LP-PHY in my Dell Mini 9).

Unfortunately this support has not been enabled in the config used to
compile the kernel in Lucid. Although I can still use the card via the
proprietary bcmwl driver, it is not my preferred option due to its
closed source nature, and its restrictive access to functions such
monitor, and packet injection.

Please enable support in this kernel via the CONFIG_B43_PHY_LP handle.

Many thanks!
