[Bug 1937350] Re: USB HDD not properly spin down after safely remove
Is it possible that the system try to spin down the USB HDD, while the unmounting of partitions or synchronization of cache still in progress? Is it possible that the system did not wait for the progress of unmounting pof partition and cache synchronization to finish, before attempt to spin down the USB HDD? I think the correct way to safely remove a USB storage device is to wait for the unmount and cache synchronization to finish, then wait for the other HDD related operations to finish before spin down the HDD. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1937350 Title: USB HDD not properly spin down after safely remove To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/1937350/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1937350] Re: USB HDD not properly spin down after safely remove
I found a workaround. Steps for workaround: 1. Open caja or any file manager. 2. Unmount all the partitions on the drive by clicking on the eject button. 3. Open Gnome Disk Utility or run "gnome-disks" command. 4. Select the HDD. 5. Click the "Drive Options" button located on the upper right. 6. Click "power off". The drive will not spin up again.

[Bug 1937350] Re: USB HDD not properly spin down after safely remove
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected focal ** Description changed: I do not know which package I should file the bug for. I am using Ubuntu MATE 20.04 LTS and Microsoft Windows 10. On Microsoft Windows 10, no issue with safely remove any USB external HDD. When using Microsoft Windows 10, after safely remove my external HDD, the HDD will spin down. But, on Ubuntu MATE 20.04 LTS, some issues occur after I try to safely remove my external HDD. Tried different hard drive, different enclosures, and also some external hard drive that came bundled with enclosure. All having same or different issues after safely remove them in Ubuntu MATE. Problems will also occur on those branded external HDD that came bundled with enclosure, for example, those Seagate Backup Plus drives ( https://www.seagate.com/as/en/consumer/backup/backup-plus/ ). Here are the common problems after safely remove (in Ubuntu MATE): 1. The external HDD will spin down and then spin up again, and then being automatically remounted again. The "dmesg" command shows errors. 2. The external HDD will spin down and then spin up again, no remount. The LED on the enclosure keep flashing. The "dmesg" command shows errors. After you unplug the HDD, you can connect another HDD. 3. The external HDD will spin down and then spin up again, no remount. The LED on the enclosure keep flashing. The "dmesg" command shows errors. BUT, after you unplug the HDD, when you connect another HDD, the computer will not detect it and will not mount it until you reboot the computer. But, before reboot connecting another device (e.g. keyboard, mouse, etc) to the same USB port, the device works perfectly. 4. The external HDD will spin down and then spin up again, no remount. But, after a few seconds, it spin down again. But, still, the "dmesg" command shows errors. Different HDD, different enclosure, show different symptoms or problems. Some HDD enclosures, number 1 above will occur. Some HDD enclosures, either number 2 or 3 above will occur. Sometimes, problem number 2 above will occur. Sometimes, problem number 3 will occur. Some enclosure, problem number 4 will occur. Here, I will use the following enclosure as example in this bug report: Product link: https://www.ugreen.com/products/usb-c-2-5-sata-iii-hard- drive-enclosure Purchase link in my country: https://shopee.com.my/UGREEN-USB-3.1-To- SATA-III-External-Hard-Drive- Enclosure-(2.5-)-i.64923440.1583255569?position=1 Here are the steps to reproduce (for the enclosure above): 1. Connect the external HDD to any available USB 3.0 port. The HDD will be mounted. Caja (Ubuntu MATE default file manager) will launch. 2. Close the Caja window. Do not do anything on the HDD. 3. Use left or right hand, touch the HDD enclosure to feel the spinning. Do not let your hand leave the enclosure, so that you can continue feel the spinning. 4. Use your another hand to operate your computer. 5. Go to desktop. 6. Right click on the external HDD icon. 7. Click "Safely Remove Drive". The HDD unmounted. Assume that one of your hands still touching the enclosure of the HDD, you will feel that the HDD will spin down and then spin up again. No remount. The LED indicator on the enclosure will keep flashing. These are described in problem number 2 and 3 above. Sometimes, after you unplug the drive and try to connect another drive, it will not be detected until you reboot your computer. Almost all external HDDs I tested will cause "dmesg" command to shows "Buffer I/O error" and "Synchronize Cache() failed" error after "Safely Remove Drive". [Bug 1905494] [NEW] Without sudo, system-config-printer freeze when changing printer driver
Public bug reported: Distribution: Ubuntu MATE 20.04.1 LTS. System-config-printer version: 1.5.12-0ubuntu1.1 If I run system-config-printer by clicking Menu -> Administration -> Printers, the system-config-printer will be run without prompting for my user password, mean without using sudo. I can install the printers successfully without any issue. But, when changing the driver, system- config-printer will freeze. Here are the steps to reproduce the issue: 1. Run system-config-printer by clicking Menu -> Administration -> Printers. You will not be prompted to enter any password. 2. Install any printer. 3. Close system-config-printer. 4. Run system-config-printer again by repeating step 1 above, clicking Menu -> Administration -> Printers. 5. Right click on any installed printer, then click properties. Printer properties will be shown. 6. In printer properties, click the "change" button located at the right side of "Make and Model" text field. The "change Driver" dialog will occur. 7. In "Change Driver" dialog, by default, "Select printer from database" will be choosen automatically. Do not do anything, and just wait for a few seconds. Another dialog occur, showing "Searching for drivers". 8. Wait for a few minutes, you will see nothing happen. System-config-printer will continue to hang/freeze. There is a workaround. Steps for workaround: 1. Exit system-config-printer if it is still running. If the system-config-printer still hang or freeze, use system monitor to kill it. 2. Run terminal. 3. In terminal run system-config-printer by using command "sudo system-config-printer". You will be prompted to enter your user password. 4. Enter your user password, then press the Enter key. 5. In system-config-printer, right click on any installed printer, then click "properties". Printer properties will be shown. 6. In printer properties, click the "change" button located at the right side of "Make and Model" text field. The "change Driver" dialog will occur. 7. Wait for the "Searching for drivers" dialog to appear and disappear, list of printer brands will be shown. 8. You can proceed to follow on screen instructions to change the driver. Please fix this issue. If changing printer driver require sudo, system-config-printer should prompt for my password. [Bug 992367] Re: An error occurred when trying to change the Full Name of my user account.
Sorry for the late reply because of busy. Due to the missing of file /var/log/messages, I edited the file /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf. Then, I rebooted my computer. After reboot, the file /var/log/messages appeared. Then, I reproduced the problem without using the workaround I stated in #9. Attached here with a zip file that consist of the following files: 1. The /var/log/messages file. 2. The /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf_original file, Which is the original version of /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf before edit. 3. The /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf file, Which is the edited version. ** Attachment added: "log_messages.zip" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-system-tools/+bug/992367/+attachment/3138102/+files/log_messages.zip -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/992367 Title: An error occurred when trying to change the Full Name of my user account. [Bug 992367] Re: An error occurred when trying to change the Full Name of my user account.
I had found the temporary workaround. First, follow steps 1 - 6 stated in the bug description, after seeing the error message, do the following: 7. After seeing the errors, do not close the "Users Settings" window, but try to change the account type by clicking the "Change..." button beside the account type. 8. Key in your account password. 9. If you are using an administrator account, best to choose "Administrator". 10. Click "ok". 11. Your full name will be changed successfully. This is just the temporary workaround.. I hope that the bug will be solved. I hope that I can change my full name without changing the account type, and if possible, without requiring my account to be administrator account. [Bug 965960] [NEW] xfce4-power-manager does not remember the brightness setting after reboot (fully power off the laptop and then power on again)
Public bug reported: On Xubuntu: 1. Install the package "xfce4-power-manager-plugins" to install the brightness plugin and the brightness setting on panel. 2. Shut down the laptop, disconnect all power sources, switch off the power socket (if the laptop power adapter is connected to the power socket and the power socket has switch, my country's power socket has switch), unplug the power adapter from the power socket(if connected), unplug the power adapter from the laptop (if connected), remove battery from the laptop, and then press the power button to release all power remain in the laptop. 3. Wait for a few seconds. Then, connect the power adapter to the laptop and the power socket, switch on the power socket (if the power socket has switch), then power on the laptop, and boot into Xubuntu. 4. Add the brightness plugin into xfce panel, if you haven't done so. Then, click on the brightness plugin. Note the original brightness level before you adjust the brightness. In my case, please look at the screenshot at http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab103/cshong/bugs/brightness_before_adjust.png for my original brightness level. 5. Adjust the brightness level. In my case, I lowered the brightness level (as you can see in screenshot http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab103/cshong/bugs/brightness_after_adjust.png ), the brightness reduced. 6. Now, follow step 2 above, Shut down the laptop, disconnect all power sources, switch off the power socket (if the laptop power adapter is connected to the power socket and the power socket has switch), unplug the power adapter from the power socket(if connected), unplug the power adapter from the laptop (if connected), make sure battery being removed, and then press the power button to release all power remain in the laptop. 7. Wait for a few seconds. Then, connect the power adapter to the laptop and the power socket, switch on the power socket (if the power socket has switch), then power on the laptop, and boot into Xubuntu. 8. Then, click the brightness plugin on xfce panel, you can see the brightness level back to its original. In my case, look at the screenshot at http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab103/cshong/bugs/brightness_before_adjust.png . That means xfce4-power-manager does not remember the brightness level. Even if my laptop reset the brightness level by itself after I disconnect all power sources and remove battery, xfce4-power-manager should remember and stored the brightness level I previously set to, and then after I switch on my laptop again and boot into Xubuntu, xfce4 -power-manager should set the brightness level according to the same as the brightness level I previously set to. This bug still exist in Maverick. And, beside GNOME Power Manager, I think there are some other packages related to this bug. Please see my explanation below: When I press "lower brightness" / "higher brighness" buttons on my laptop, Ubuntu will display the brightness status. This also mean that Ubuntu is able to detect that I am pressing the "lower brightness" / "higher brighness" buttons. [Bug 541620] Re: Ralink RT3090 Wireless Not Supported in Lucid
I am using HP Mini 110 netbook with Ralink RT3090 wireless chipset. I also faced this problem. However, I fixed it by downloading and installing the latest driver from http://www.ralinktech.com/support.php?s=2 . Before building and installing the driver, you need to ensure the packages "build-essential" (or at least GCC) are installed. If you did not install it before, and cannot connect to the internet by using wired LAN, you have windows and can boot to Windows, or you can access another computer which can access internet, follow these steps: 1. Run Synaptic Package Manager, mark the package "build-essential", the other required packages will be automatically marked for you. 2. Then, in Synaptic Package Manager, click file -> Generate package download script, then save the generated script into either your USB Flash Drive or external hard disk drive. 3. If you can boot to Windows, and your windows can access internet, you open the generated script file, you will see a lot of URL inside the files. Paste those URL on your web browser or any download manager software to download the required packages. You can also open the script files and download the packages on another computer that can access internet. 4. Save all those downloaded packages into your USB Flash Drive or external hard disk drive. 5. Also download the RT3090 driver source files from the above website to your USB drive. 6. Back to the Ubuntu on your computer, run Synaptic Package Manager again, click File -> Add downloaded packages, then go to the directory of your downloaded packages, click OK. The packages will be installed. You can now proceed to build the new driver. 7. Extract the downloaded driver source files to any directory. 8. Open terminal, go to the directory where you extracted the files to, then run "sudo make" to build the driver. 9. Run "sudo make install". 10. Either restart the networking services or reboot your Ubuntu. 11. When I press the 'lower brightness' button on my Netbook / Laptop, the gnome-power-manager's configuration should be automatically updated, so that Ubuntu will boot with new brightness setting. [Bug 577825] [NEW] Either battery status icon not being shown, or the icon showing "Laptop battery is charged".
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager I am using Ubuntu 10.04. I am not sure whether this bug really related to gnome-power-manager or not. So, if wrong, please give me chance to correct it. Under general tab in power management preferences (System -> Preferences -> Power Management -> general), I had set the notification area to "Only display an icon when charging or discharging". If I use battery to power my computer without power adapter, no icon had been displayed on the taskbar, same thing happen if I plug in my power adapter to charge the battery. If I set the notification area in System -> Preferences -> Power Management -> general to "Always display an icon", a battery icon has been displayed on the taskbar. But, doesn't matter I am charging or discharging the battery, when I click on the battery icon, it will display "Laptop battery is charged". ** Description changed: Iam using Ubuntu 9.10. Before this, I installed Ubuntu 9.04 via Wubi and upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 on my laptop through alternate CD. Then I updated my Ubuntu 9.10 by using Update Manager. After update, the problem of error "Buffer i/o error on device loop0 logical block xx" was resolved, but new problem arrived. When i try to restart my Ubuntu, It shows the Ubuntu shut down screen, then my laptop totally freeze, with the following conditions: 1. My laptop monitor turned black (or turned off automatically). 2. My USB mouse and external USB 2.5 portable Hard Disk Drive's power were turned off by the system automatically. 3. The laptop still on and the USB Cooler Fan still working, but freeze and not restarting. To get rid of the freeze, I have to turn off my laptop, then turn on again. If you require more information, please reply. Additional information: My laptop is a fully ACPI based laptop. Booting Ubuntu with "acpi=off" command can temporary fix the problem, but it will cause other problem such as my internal WiFi adapter cannot be enabled and the volume - control button cannot be used. So, I mush use normal booting and CANNOT + control button cannot be used.
