[Bug 236730] Re: resolution broken using 5200 nvidia card with Ubuntu 8.04

2008-07-07 Thread Damian
Sorry,

My machine was in this state for too long to hang around hoping for a
fix. I had to decide to either downgrade to 7.10 or upgrade my hardware.
Wanting to keep up to date with Mythbuntu meant upgrading the hardware
and I've not had any problems since.

Very frustrating situation to be in though. This kind or problem would
send many people straight back to windows.

Thanks for replying
Damian

[Bug 236730] [NEW] resolution broken using 5200 nvidia card with Ubuntu 8.04

2008-06-02 Thread Damian
Public bug reported:

I had the widescreen resolution for my projector set up fine in 7.10,
but I have been living with "Low resolution mode" since I upgraded to
8.04. Something has obviously changed and broken things and I have no
idea what.

I have tried every driver I can and nothing has fixed this problem. I
know that there have been lots of people with this problem and some are
getting things fixed by using the latest beta from nvidia (173.xx).
However, if I install this driver, not only do I still not have the
resolution that I'm used to, but I'm told that the driver requires a CPU
with SSE (I have a 1.2GB Athlon CPU which does not have SSE).

I realise that the last bit is a nvidia driver issue, but I had all of
this working fine in Ubuntu 7.10 so something has broken things quite
badly for lots of people in Ubuntu 8.04.

I currently have the nvidia-glx package installed. I have attached my
current Xorg.0.log file. And here is the xorg.conf file which worked
fine for me in the past.

xorg.conf:
# xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)

[Bug 129910] Re: tty[1-6] are active but display nothing in Gutsy

2007-11-17 Thread Damian
I've tried both:

1. sudo vi /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and add fbcon and vesafb
fbcon
vesafb

2. sudo update-initramfs -u

3. sudo vi /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer

change the line "blacklist vesafb" to "# blacklist vesafb"

4. reboot and everything is fine

and:

1. sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer
   * change the line "blacklist vesafb" to "# blacklist vesafb" and "blacklist
nvidiafb" to "# blacklist nvidiafb"
2. sudo nano /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and add fbcon and vesafb and nvidiafb
3. sudo update-initramfs -u -k all

and neither worked.

The 1st seemed to have no effect at all.

The second messed up X so that I only had a very low res gui

I've put everything back to how it was but it's very frustrating not to
be able to use tty. uspalsh shows on boot up and shut down, but I can
only see the white text on black back ground bits on boot up. I get an
out of range error (same as for tty) on powering down when it gets to
those bits.

Is this likely to be fixed any time soon with an update any time soon?

[Bug 770160] Re: windows start to move slow after using compiz for some hours

2011-06-22 Thread Damian
Ok, sorry for my English. I make some tests with miscellaneous compiz
configurations. On my nVidia GTX 260 (Gold series, 216 cores, offical
nvidia drivers) with enabled VBlank and refresh rate 120Hz (monitor
refresh rate x2) compiz works good until:

- run browser (Firefox). FPS when dragging windows drops down after serval
minutes.
- try to group windows. No matter if I only group, or tabbling it, FPS drop
down immediately for all windows, not only for grouped/tabbled.
- turn off option "Lazy Positioning" in Drag Window plugin configuration.

I think this bug have connection with XServer and refreshing windows
coordinates on it.

Happened always when maximize windows with option "Keep previews of
minimized windows" turned ON in Workaround plugin in compiz. Also I
didn't see that previewing minimized windows works (Ubuntu 11.04 and
Mint 11), so I turned this off and for now I didn't see white window.

[Bug 801099] [NEW] Compiz Cube with VBlank ON and dragging windows

2011-06-23 Thread Damian
Public bug reported:

Sorry about my english. I have VBlank turned ON, nvidia 275 drivers, in
compiz also VBlank turned ON with refresh rate manually set to 60Hz.
Animations is smooth, FPS always around 60. And I have turned ON plugin
'Cube' without effects like 3d or transparent. When I want drag window
to next side of cube, animations is still smooth, but like slow-motion.
Dragging window to next side takes ~15 seconds. When VBlank is OFF,
there is no slow-motion effect. I wanted to record the problem, but with
VBlank i have artifacts on video and barely see slow motion effect.

1) 11.04
2) Compiz 0.9.4, nVidia 275.09.07
3) With VBlank ON animation should take same time as with VBlank OFF
4) Animation with VBlank OFF is smooth and fast, with VBlank ON is smooth and
very slow, about 15 seconds.

He is right you know. Its absurd than anyone could press those buttons
accidentally.

If you would be to press them "accidentally" theres a bigger problem at
hand..

[Bug 1854386] [NEW] Show application renders computer unusable (invisible overlap)

2019-11-28 Thread Damian
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I've upgraded my ubuntu 19.04 to 19.10 this morning and I came across
this very annoying bug.

Whenever I click on 'show applications' or press win key (shortcut), the
menu with the applications show, but it's empty - you can search through
it and it works fine (applications show, one can trigger application
launch), but then after you select an application, the menu doesn't
disappear at all.

It doesn't go away when pressing any application on the dash panel, nor
when clicking esc key, it only goes away after you click on the dash
icon again, BUT...

It doesn't really go away - it just becomes invisible, but still it
overlaps all the items that are launched (with exception of dash panel,
because it's not being overlapped), and you can't do anything on any
launched application. Sometimes when you try to move some windows, you
can see them getting transformed into a miniature, as if the system
wanted to insert application into the suggestions on the 'show
applications'.

The only thing that worked for me was restarting my computer.

It seems like a similar issue to this:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues/1633
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues/1686

It don't know exactly which package this problem lies in, but it might
be gnome-shell (you would know better). Might be that the problem is
already solved, and just bumping the gnome package would solve it.

[Bug 218263] Re: [Hardy/Intrepid] numlock and capslock leds don't light up on MacBook

2008-11-18 Thread damian
I just did an apt-get remove mouseemu on a fresh install of Intrepid
with a MacBook 2,1 and immediately the caps lock and num lock lights
started working, /but/ i lost all other keyboard keys except for the
brightness controls (!?). fixed by switching to one of the text-only
consoles (err, alt-ctrl-fn-f4 i think) and reinstalling mouseemu.

but, i've just installed an FDI file for the trackpad, and gsynaptics,
so i'm going to reboot and try again, and if that works i'll post a new
message here.

2008-11-23 Thread damian
ok, just confirmed it: even with an FDI file installed, and with
gsynaptics, removing mouseemu on Intrepid on a MacBook 2,1 COMPLETELY
KILLS all keyboard input EXCEPT the brightness controls.

[Bug 1854386] Re: Stuck on show applications overlay (can't close it)

2019-12-11 Thread Damian
Sorry for the long wait - I've just tried to uninstall all gnome-shell
extensions I had, it turned out I have one that was causing the problem
- 'workspaces to dock', that I tried to use to get more macos like
experience with workspaces (left-right swiping with cmd-right/left).
Uninstalling it solved the problem.

Now I'll need to find another solution for that extension, but at least
this bigger issue is resolved. Thank you very much for your help!

I've had the same problem, but it was not because of the connection

helpful.

[Bug 220549] [NEW] No sound for Intel HDA - with headphones there is a muffled crackle.

2008-04-22 Thread Damian Ondore
Public bug reported:

I did a fresh install (not upgrade) of Hardy Heron.
I am using a Toshiba Equium L40.

Under 7.10 this worked but after I had to add some lines to alsa.conf. (The
left channel was emitting a high pitch whine)

Under Hardy, when wearing headphones I can hear very quiet crackles,
spits and hisses that seem to correspond to whatever I'm trying to play.

2008-06-20 Thread Oliver Damian
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase

I get the error below when starting up kde 4, not all the time, but
lately yes, I'm not sure what causes it. I've installed all the upgrades

maximize, and close icons on the upper right corner of a window but not
all the time. I'm running on an HP Pavilion dv6000 notebook.

Error message: "The application KWD (kde-window-decorator) crashed and

[Bug 252439] Re: Network file transfer stalled

2008-08-10 Thread Damian Dunajski
I just finished testing kernels from 2.6.22.x (2.6.22-14.52) and
2.6.26.x (2.6.26-5.14) lines. All of them works fine. I don't have any
problems with downloading files. It seems that the problem occurs only
in the 2.6.24.x kernel line.

[Bug 257182] [NEW] workspace columns lost without switcher

2008-08-11 Thread Damian Johnson
Public bug reported:

The number of workspace columns is lost (reverted to one) if the "Workspace
Switcher" is removed from the panel. Here's the steps to reproduce:
1. Add workspace switcher to panel (right click on pane > "Add to panel..." >
Workspace Switcher)
2. Raise the number of rows two (right click Workspace Switcher > Preferences >
Change "Show all workspaces in: X rows" to 2)
3. Remove Workspace Switcher (right click Workspace Switcher > "Remove From
Panel")
4. At this point you'll still have 2x2 workspaces. However, if you either
re-add the Workspace Switcher OR restart Ubuntu, it'll be reverted to a single
row (1x4 workspaces).

Bug is with Hardy Heron (Ubuntu 8.04.1) and desktop effects are turned
off. -Damian

I finally resolved the problem. I have also had another libXft and libfreetype
in my /usr/local. Eliminating the library of the application from my path
solved all my conflicts with the remaining applications.
Using the recommendation of treviño I performed an alias to my
non-ubuntu-application, using its library. And now everything it's working.

[Bug 257182] Re: workspace columns lost without switcher

2008-10-17 Thread Damian Johnson
How is this not a bug? If the user has the panel then workspace
dimensions work properly. However, if it's removed then all workspaces
are 'flattened' (ie, Ubuntu forgets the rows attribute). My issue isn't
that it's reverted when re-adding the component (though that's not good)
but that it needs the panel around (and visible) to get Gnome to
remember that there's multiple rows. In other words preference data is
being contained in a UI component which is bad design. I'm not 'creating
a new object' when it's reverted to a 1x4 workspace via restarting.

+1, though I'm finding pasting between Thunar windows via the shortcut always

doing it via the menu (Edit > Paste) does

[Bug 1357090] Re: Black screen on resume in Xubuntu 14.04.1

2014-09-04 Thread Damian Campbell
@Thaddäus

I confirm there is no difference if the xfce-power-manager process is
killed.

Closing the laptop still results in a black screen with a frozen mouse
cursor visible upon laptop re-open. The only recourse from this state is
a power-off reboot.

The laptop does not appear to suspend when the lid is closed as it does
when the hardware "Suspend" key is pressed or the menu item "Logout-
suspend" is clicked. With a lid close there is no immediate disk
activity and the power light stays on rather than blinks.

same behaviour if upower is removed or not, Same behaviour is xfce-
power-manager is removed or not, EXCEPT that the first time the laptop
lid is closed after reboot OR logoff expressly invoked, all works well.
After that, the same behaviour is seen.

@Sean

The laptop only sees the login screen after a logoff. The system is set
to auto-logon.

A reminder that this all worked perfectly with 12.04 LTS from first install
right up to the latest 12.04.4 LTS updates. The problem only started on a new
install of 14.04.1 LTS as reported above. The installation is absolutely
standard.

Further comment :

The black screen seen on logout is DIFFERENT to the black screen problem on lid
close.

Logout will allow a smooth power down on power switch press. Terminal
reports normal activity. This could be the backlight issue reported
elsewhere?

On lid close the only recourse is forced power down. Often there is a
frozen mouse cursor visible.

Same with me as with Chris - so at the moment some of my backed-up files
seem to be "lost" :(

[Bug 524454] Re: Networking is disabled on boot (usually after suspend/hibernate)

2015-10-06 Thread Damian Yerrick
It's still happening in 14.04 LTS (Trusty) on my Dell Inspiron mini 1012
laptop, usually after a fairly long use session. But it always starts
working again after either another suspend/resume cycle or restarting
Network Manager.

[Bug 862992] Re: calibrate button does nothing

2012-04-12 Thread Damian Moore
Just tried in 12.04 beta and still nothing happens when clicking the
calibrate button. The user has to know to install gnome-color-manager.

[Bug 849110] Re: Regression: keyboard backlight hotkeys no longer work

2011-09-27 Thread Damian Beltrami
Still not working on my Sony Vaio S (11.10 Beta 2).
Always worked with 11.04 and stopped working somewhere between Beta 1 and Beta
2.

There are no keys on the Sony to switch this on and off (to my
knowledge). The keyboard backlighting is activated on keypress and if
the ambient low detected is low (I believe).

I am having the same experience as Cas. Agree with low/medium rating as
work around is easy to manage.
