quantum recently started depending on alembic for db migrations, since
sqlalchemy-migrate was not sufficient.

that patch as a whole is too large for backporting in my opinion.

unless there is a smaller bugfix patch to back-port that removes the mock
dependency, i'd suggest adding the dependency for folsom, and then removing
in grizzly.

Re: [Bug 1069966] Re: rootwrap error with L3 agent

2012-12-30 Thread dan wendlandt
This is indeed a separate issue, but one that I believe the Ubuntu people
had fixed. Can you make sure you have the latest OVS? Ubuntu originally
shipped Quantal with only the built-in kernel support for OVS, which does
not support tunneling.

adding adam to the bug, who can comment for sure, but it looks like the
issues is just "fix committed" for quantal, not "fixed released", so I

I have confirmed that the updated packages solve the issue by doing a
devstack install on standard precise, seeing the issue, upgrading the
ovs packages manually via deb, rebooting the system to load the new
kernel module, and then testing that the issue is no longer seen.
thanks!

[Bug 1052522] Re: L3 plugin exists / dies when external bridge isn't up

2012-09-20 Thread dan wendlandt
Yeah, the traceback is unrelated. The bug is valid though, as even if
the bridge is configured, if the l3-agent starts before OVS, the
l3-agent will exit permanently, which is obviously bad.

I do think there's probably a decent argument to be made that the lack
of an external bridge should probably not kill the entire service, so
much as just prevent it from configuring gateways. I was trying to be
very loud and upfront about the error, which makes sense if the process
is started manually, but not if its a service that starts automatically
and especially if it could start before OVS. There's also the point
that if the l3-agent was only implementing routers with no gateway
service, technically you wouldn't need an external gateway at all.

That said, in several reboot on ubuntu at least, I saw this issue 1 out
of 4 times, which is still enough that we need to treat this as a
serious issue.

The question is whether we should fix this in the code, or put the
requirement on packagers. I tend to lean toward fixing it in the code,
and instead checking and printing an error message and skipping router
configuration in the router loop if no bridge is configured.

[Bug 1044318] Re: pre-1.5 OVS has trouble with floating ips when pinging from the same box

2012-09-07 Thread dan wendlandt
To clarify my previous comment, this is not an issue with the packaging,
it is a bug in OVS. I removed it from quantum RC1 as there was not code
that needed to be committed to quantum to fix the issue, simply that
distros needed to create new packages with the fix.

Again, here is the OVS change: http://openvswitch.org/cgi-
bin/gitweb.cgi?p=openvswitch;a=commitdiff;h=53e6421bc83918ac2d00ba5516f205fa7e394140

According to the OVS team, without the change, the connection tracking
logic using by IPtables gets confused if a packet passes through
multiple linux network namespaces on the same host. The reason for this
confusion is that OVS is not properly clearing some of the fields in the
skb header, meaning the connection tracking ignores this packet, so
iptables functionality that relies on this (in particular DNAT and SNAT)
do not work.

>From the OVS commit message:

"It's possible that packets that are sent on internal devices (from
the OVS perspective) have already traversed the local IP stack.
After they go through the internal device, they will again travel
through the IP stack which may get confused by the presence of
existing information in the skb. The problem can be observed
when switching between namespaces. This clears out that information
to avoid problems but deliberately leaves other metadata alone.
This is to provide maximum flexibility in chaining together OVS
and other Linux components."

Unfortunately, this is actually fairly common given that the quantum
l3-agent uses namespaces to implement multiple quantum "routers" on the
same box, and uses IPtables within each namespace to perform SNAT/DNAT
for "floating ips" and external network access. Above I mention why
users are ALWAYS going to hit this bug in single node developer
installs, since they typically test the reachability of VMs via floating
IPs.

removing from milestone for quantum, as this is a purely packaging
issue.

[Bug 1045064] Re: Impossible to run Quantum Server from testing packages

2012-09-02 Thread dan wendlandt
This error is usually the result of gettext.install() was not called,
but it should be called any time something in the quantum package is
loaded, based on this grep:

./__init__.py:import gettext
./__init__.py:gettext.install('quantum', unicode=1)

My guess is that this is packaging related, since we don't see it in
devstack, but it needs more investigation.

hi aaron, I checked with a member of the ovs team and they confirmed
that the additional include header was not strictly necessary for the
patch.

Thanks Adam. I had the developer confirm that the path looks good.

Adding Aaron Rosen from Nicira to the bug, as he will be the one to grab
the new PPA and confirm that it fixes the issue. Thanks again for the

[Bug 1021530] Re: update to include stable fixes for OVS 1.4

2012-07-06 Thread dan wendlandt
Hi Adam, James,

Thanks for the quick response.

The upstream change is here: http://openvswitch.org/cgi-
bin/gitweb.cgi?p=openvswitch;a=commit;h=11f84dce005dd14a374ab2ef5f8c25bcf8285a36

In our testing, VMs frequently send out IPv6 neighbor discovery packets
(the v6 equivalent of ARP) during boot. When the OVS Quantum plugin is
running in tunnel mode (new default), this causes OVS to crash and wipe
all flow state from its configuration.

I can put you in touch with the the appropriate OVS developer if you
like, as we both work at Nicira.

[Bug 1021530] [NEW] update to include stable fixes for OVS 1.4

2012-07-05 Thread dan wendlandt
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I'm the lead of the OpenStack Quantum project, which uses OVS on Ubuntu
precise quite heavily.

We have a bug fix for an issue in Quantum that necessarily triggers a
bug in OVS 1.4.0 that has been fixed in the stable 1.4.2 release. We
want to push our fix, but pushing it before precise has the
corresponding OVS bugfix would cause many people to experience the OVS
bug, which is actually worse than the bug we've fixed in Quantum.

Can we get precise upgraded to OVS 1.4.2?

If this isn't the right venue to request this, please point me to the
right place.

[Bug 816754] [NEW] add ovs-vsctl to sudoers file

2011-07-26 Thread dan wendlandt
Public bug reported:

The diablo-3 release of nova now includes the option to use Open vSwitch
in addition to the Linux Bridge for VM networking.

As a result, the nova code now calls the "ovs-vsctl" utility using sudo,
so I believe this means that ovs-vsctl should be added to the nova
sudoers file (http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
branches/ubuntu/oneiric/nova/oneiric/view/head:/debian/nova_sudoers).

ovs-vsctl is essentially the Open vSwitch equivalent of brctl . Thanks.
