[Bug 565751] Re: 10.04 won't start after 1st auto update

2010-04-28 Thread dartdog
Got the message asking for more details.. I had to quit and move on to
Fedora which installed straightaway...The start up process seems to have
to flaws 1 can't deal with the older Intel video and 2...seems to read
from the computer's main drive and pick up bad info from a flawed prior
install,, so at one point I could get nothing started... and this even
when I told the install to nuke the partition,, and even if I separately
gparted the drive with a live gpart,,, again Fedora just installed on
same machine...

[Bug 47768] Re: Mount Root Files System Failed

2010-04-22 Thread dartdog
Well Yes I just got hit bad,, I got a new update on a semi stable version of
10.04 beta2 and then got an update released today 4/22/10 of Intrafms and it
appeared to install fine then crashed on reboot have filed bug here
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/568580
Re: Intrmfs New update borks!! & RC1 cannot boot...
I am getting the same issue with RC1,, that is the video is set wrong at boot
(the screen is displaying larger fonts than previous) then I get a flash like
it is trying to reset the video then everything dies.. I have a somewhat older
gateway mx6028 laptop with Intel integrated graphics and a new 160 gb hard
drive.

I was able to install beta 2 but painfully; installing all the open gl
updates last.. I was running well and then the Intramfs update came
and blew me a way...

Just received Intramfs update, within the hour (4/22/10 11:47 central) ,
installs correctly on a new 10.04 install but now machine cannot boot,,
<<< after this I tried the RC1 which just got posted...

It is somehow resetting the video it appears as the boot screen comes up
in different (larger) type. then blanks and all activity stops,, I have
been having similar problems if I apply all updates after an initial
install of 10.04 but if I hold the opne gl modules the system will work
but a backup taken with Remastersys made after the open GL installs will
not work while the one made prior to the open GL install will restore
the system so I'm guessing some sort of erroneous HW reset sequence

[Bug 565751] [NEW] 10.04 won't start after 1st auto update

2010-04-17 Thread dartdog
Public bug reported:

I got what appeared to be a successful install on a Gateway mx6028 with
a factory new samasung 160gb drive. When the 1st very large update
completed the system hung on reboot after displaying several Ubuntu
screens (lite weight logo) no error messages or anything else.. Have
been through the sequence several times,, went to 9.1 and could not get
a successful install apparently due to the disk size and a grub issue,,
(don't really know but that was what was pointed to in IRC.. that person
indicated that Lucid had better handling of this issue and indeed I did
get the initial boot and at least one subsequently one prior to the big
auto update..after another re-install I get a bunch of errors on shut
down [1450.006041] end_request:I/O error, dev sr0, sector 498506
followed by a large group of other "similar " errors...

The grub folks pointed to the need for the "ata" option on the earlier
releases...

[Bug 236214] Some progress following hints in prob #158462

2008-05-31 Thread dartdog
I followed some of the procedures in the above named problem here in
Launchpad and got much further, I ran eclipse from sudo and then ran
numerous update cycles, that got most of the documents and features
installed but I could never get a clean finish, that is the installer
would refuse to update due to errors, which a user in the 158462 problem
has documented, with "patches missing" but nothing I could come up with
could find or install the patches.

So I finally tried to download the latest 3.3 (gtk-2.3RC2.tar.gz) all in
one Birt package directly from eclipse.., which got to my desktop, I
then used the archive extractor, which got it onto the desktop.. I
changed the extracted "eclipse " to allow execution and I'm sort of off!
That is: it seems to be running...

Where should I extract the package to? I'd like to get the proper
locations...

The key takeaway is the repository at Ubuntu is woefully out of date and
incomplete, and plain does not work!! Someone with more skill than I
needs to look at it since at least for me and I suspect many others the
eclipse toolbox is a great reason to use Ubuntnu. By the way, I did get
an install of Eclipse (3.22) up and going much easier on win XP. (but
that's not the direction I wish to go...)

Hope this helps someone!

[Bug 236214] [NEW] Can't "clean" Install Eclipse on Hardy?

2008-05-30 Thread dartdog
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eclipse

I have tried several times to install Eclipse on Hardy, particularly to use for
Java / mysql development. I get an install for Eclipse (3.2) via synaptic.. but
the start-up screens in Eclipse each say that when I click on details for the
Eclipse platform, Java development or Plug-in Development, that the option is
not installed.. I have installed, deleted and re-installed almost everything
possible for eclipse, I have ensured that I have the Java-6-jdk installed,, I'm
sort of at the end.. One helpful person in eclipse recomended to install via
the eclipse libs directly ,but I'm so new at this I don't know how.. and anyhow
I figured I should report in on the problem.
The help about from what I end up with is: Version: 3.2.2
Build id: M20070212-1330 (Ubuntu version: 3.2.2-5ubuntu2)
My error log follows:

[Bug 226737] [NEW] Default install of Pidgin does not work

2008-05-04 Thread dartdog
Public bug reported:

Did a fresh install of Hardy (wubi install) from iso, then tried to set up and
use Pidgin It went through set up and I used it briefly, then exited,,, came
back and
1. it would not restart,,, I killed it through sys monitor,
then 2. it would start but no "buddy " window..
Went through de-install and re-install but still no joy. The app can come up
but only connected to Nickserv and freenode connect and I do log in correctly.
but without buddy list cannot chose any one to talk to or channels to
participate in.
Installed xchat for the time being... but I am IRC challenged at the moment
(too much information)

The only window I get is the Conversation window which does not have
"help" or "report a problem" available
