[Bug 1203534] Re: update-manager crashes when trying to upgrade to 13.10 when nvidia video driver in use

2013-11-08 Thread Dave S
On a second system w/Nvidia.

Failed 4 times using:
in a terminal: /usr/bin/pkexec /usr/bin/do-release-upgrade
--frontend=DistUpgradeViewGtk3 -d

twice with result:
Checking for a new Ubuntu release
authenticate 'saucy.tar.gz' against 'saucy.tar.gz.gpg'
extracting 'saucy.tar.gz'
Real-time signal 0

third time was:
Checking for a new Ubuntu release
authenticate 'saucy.tar.gz' against 'saucy.tar.gz.gpg'
extracting 'saucy.tar.gz'
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

then tried from /tmp:
Checking for a new Ubuntu release
Real-time signal 0

Finally ran do-release-upgrade, as with previous system, and it's off
and running.

2009-07-28 Thread Dave S
Having similar issues resuming my HP CQ50 (cq50-210us) - just blank
screen w/mouse cursor. I did find this which seems to have resolved the
resume issue for me.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1071303

Basically I added pci=nomsi to my kernel boot options - now I can
suspend/resume.

[Bug 402922] [NEW] brasero crashes buring audio disk

2009-07-22 Thread dave s
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

xubuntu 9.04

d...@main-system:~$ apt-cache policy brasero
brasero:
  Installed: 2.26.1-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2.26.1-0ubuntu1

I regularly have to burn CD's with 75 1min tracks on them. I used to use
K3B no problems but am having problems with brasero,

From the GUI perspective I click the burn button, transcodeing works AOK
then in a flash the GUI pops up to say the disk has been burnt but
nothing happened.

executing 'brasero --debug' I see it crashes ...

Im running Hardy Heron and it no longer seems to be in the repos.
Since I reported this bug
I have done some C++ hacking on kcron. Looking at konserve it does not
look like an easy bug
to fix ... good luck :)

Dave

PS I now use jungledisk S3 for off site backup

 Thanks,

 JOnathan

Yep no problem

In any case, what I mean with SOMEONE fix the problem is that someone
from Canonical or at least someone involved in maintaining Firestarter
 should fix this problem.

Its worrying that this has been left out in the cold especially with a
fix sitting there.

As far as your fix is concerned, why not try the supplied script in
the bugreport and place it as 50firestarter (make it executable) in
the dispatcher.d directory of NetworkManager. That script will not be
replaced by an update, at least I doubt it and if it will then it will
most defenitely be replaced by something that is also trying to fix
this issue so no harm can come from that. Whilst when firestarter is
updated, the firestarter script might be updated and thus your edited
version might be replaced. The problem most likely will reappear. With
the dispatcher script I assume it works for wireless connections as
 well.

Just tested it - works a treat with my wifi.

I would say, just give it a go.

 Cheers,

 Alex.

2007-05-16 Thread dave s
I have to admit I had not thought of an update silently killing my
hack :) - In my books this is a VERY serious flaw and would have
thought it was #1 priority to be fixed. I only discovered I was
unprotected by accident was not best pleased.

I am a very green bug fixer, just setting up a KDE4 dev environment. I
don't know about packaging or I would have a go myself.

[Bug 42759] Re: Firestarter init fails on system boot when NetworkManager is used

2007-05-06 Thread dave s
Exactly the same problem as ChrisLasher earlier. WIFI not up when
firestarter script called - dangerous :(

My solution, edit /etc/firestarter ..

# *** Commented out by me otherwise firestarter wont start due to wifi not
started ***
#if [ $MASK =  -a $1 != stop ]; then
# echo External network device $IF is not ready. Aborting..
# exit 2
#fi

And now firestarter works every time. OK this is a sincere question - I
am no security expert - why does firestarter need to check to see if the
eth? port is up before applying the iptable rules ? It appears that when
firestarter starts all non defined ports are blocked so if firestarter
IS mis configured network issues would alert the user. This has got to
be better than silently failing and leaving the user vulnerable.

[Bug 73639] Re: kmail 'goes to sleep'

2007-01-16 Thread dave s
A followup ...

OK the problem came back big time, within 2-3 hours of starting kmail
around 6 accounts would be locked out.

In desperation I purged kmail, wiped all its accounts, re-installed
setup, reinstalled lots of apps in kmails dependency tree - same problem
!

So in desperation I contacted my hosting company - 'err yep we have a
problem - you are hosted in hong kong we have cable damage, would you
like to be hosted in the US ?'

Moved to the US all is well now :)

Thought the followup may be useful - incidentally thunderbird did not
suffer from this problem - must be an internal timing thing. Or maybe
kmail just never times out and retries an account ?

Anyhow thanks for your help

[Bug 73639] Re: kmail 'goes to sleep'

2006-12-03 Thread dave s
kmail has been running for a couple of days now and it locked up on
account 'kdepim' this did not seem to effect any other accounts but did
stop incoming mail from 'kdepim'

The progress bar was empty 0% and the message below was 'preparing
transmission from kdepim' (I have a screenshot but did not post it as I
would guess its against rules :)

This has been stuck for the last 12ish Hours

Pressing the cancel red cross next to the status bar freed it to read in
more mail.

However without the status bars constantly being displayed and
flickering up and down accounts just quietly 'go to sleep'

Is there no 'abort account read' after say 5 mins timer within kmail ?

[Bug 73639] kmail 'goes to sleep'

2006-11-28 Thread dave s
Public bug reported:

I have multiple accounts (15) some quite high traffic (mailing lists)

I leave kmail running 247 checking mail at the default 1 min intervals,
at first mail arrives as expected.

After 1 - 2 days I just dont get any mail, If I stop then restart kmail
I get a ton of new emails.

It appears to go to sleep without any outward sign of problems. The
status bar at the bottom still flickers that it is checking for new mail
but none is received.

I tried to find a kmail debug mode but was unsuccessful :(

[Bug 73639] Re: kmail 'goes to sleep'

2006-11-28 Thread dave s
Wow that was a quick response !

I have always had multiple accounts so unfortunately cannot comment on
single accounts.

The progress bar is 0% and flicks across as account are checked.

Something interesting - if I press the up arrow for more info, I
sometimes get a stuck account, the mailboxes are checked and the info
'block' raises and falls but one or two accounts can seem frozen and do
not go. If I stop and start kmail it cures the problem.

Could it be occasionally there is a problem opening a mailbox 60 X 24 =
1440 reads per 24 hr and when this happens that part of kmail sticks ?

As far as disconnections - no problem - my broadband has been down twice
in the last 2-3 years (happy to say)

Hope this helps

[Bug 51492] movemail problem

2006-07-01 Thread dave s
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

I am running dapper drake. Thunderbird has two pop accounts and one
movemail account.

The pop accounts work fine,

The movemail account performs strangely. I have selected for it to check
mail on startup and every 10 mins. It refuses to do either, even a ctrl-
shift-t does not goad it into working however if I right click the
account directly and select 'get messages for account' it downloads my
system mail perfectly :)

I have tried 'apt-get install --reinstall mozilla-thunderbird'

I have wiped my .mozilla-thunderbird directory totally and set the
accounts up again. Strangely the movemail account worked briefly as
expected when it was the only account in thunderbird.

Since it works when I right click the account directly I am confident it
is not a config problem but a problem with thunderbird.

Since I have been missing system mail it is quite a problem :)

Hi Gerv,

I have tried just about everything I can think of, I have upgraded my
kernel, compiled the latest version of pilot-link which uses direct
libusb support bypassing the visor module, apt-get install --reinstall
numerous packages (you never know) and I still only get 1 in 20ish
syncs.

I have also tried joining the pilot-link mailing list but there appears
to be something wrong with there mail server. I am authenticated and
welcomed but cannot send anything to the list.

Googling around it appears a lot of people are having problems. I am
using my Wifes breezy machine now to sync my Zire 31. Just glad I
stumbled across the problems before I did the big dist-upgrade on hers
as well :)

I guess its a case of wait and see, I am sure it will get resolved,
hopefully soon.
