Regarding the design input, let me note that it works/used to work with
Unity 2D in Ubuntu 11.04 (unity-2d being based on metacity then).

Sadly, this is still true with Precise 12.04 [3].
Thus, sticking to Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity 2D.
