[Bug 2060780] Re: CIFS stopped working/is unstable with kernel update to 5.15.0-102.112

2024-04-15 Thread Tim Dee
Good to know a new kernel is coming out soon to fix the issue. Thank
you.

Where is the best place to look to see when the patch is released?

Many thanks.

[Bug 1961059] [NEW] Cannot switch users after changing display driver

2022-02-16 Thread dee veloper
Public bug reported:

Steps to Reproduce:

Have more than one user.
Be logged into one of the users after a restart.
Open additional drivers and change your Nvidia display driver to a different
one (i changed to the open source driver).
Apply the change.
Attempt to "Switch User"
When you try to log in with the second user after entering the password, it
just takes you back to select a user and you can't log in to the other user.
Log back in to the initial user and switch the driver back to the one it was on
before you switched.
Attempt to "Switch User"
It works

Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS
Intel Core i5-11600K
64GB RAM
Nvidia GTX 1070 (currently on Nvidia 510 Driver)

I discovered this while I was trying to solve a different issue of my
computer not waking from a simple blank screen.

[Bug 397269] Re: HDMI audio cuts out intermittently while normal audio plays fine

2021-11-03 Thread Dee Winthrop
For the record I have the same problem on a Huawei Matebook Pro using
Ubuntu 20.04 - fully upgraded. But the computer uses an HDMI adapter.
Could that be the problem?

Again for the record, on another computer with Ubuntu 21.04 (Waylabd),
everything works fine.

Meanwhile, I have reinstalled. I have done nothing else except enable
this email address and add "Russian" in my language settings.

Clicking the + sign no longer crashes the GUI, but opens "Add an input
source". I have the choice of English and Russian (Russian Federation).
(Norwegian keyboard is already default.)

Running gnome-congrol-center from command line does not generate any
error message and there is nothing in /var/cahe.

Now that I think I finally found out how to send the /var/crash report,
I'm no longer getting a report when I run gnome-control-center from
command line. The one I have is from 16.13 even though I added 'Crash'
to the "problem" line in /etc/apport/crashdb.conf

What I can do is to reinstall and see what happens then. Let me know if
you want me to do that.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed, updated software and I'm
afraid the results are discouraging:

Having removed "Russian phonetic" (which had been added from "others"),
I added Russian from "Manage installed languages", then clicked the +
sign but that simply closed the settings. I repeated the process a few
times after rebooting. The plus sign merely shut down the entire
settings GUI.

Clicking the + sign should normally have opened up all the languages I
had added in "Manage installed languages" and their variants.

[Bug 1925792] [NEW] Russian phonetic keyboard unavailable

2021-04-23 Thread Dee Winthrop
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 21-04 installed from scratch (on dual-boot) a few days before
stable release.

To be able to switch to a language that requires a keyboard different
than my own, I used the GUI's "language and region" settings > "manage
installed languages" > install/remove languages. I found "Russian" and
it was added. Next i pressed the + sign. Selecting "Russian (Russian
Federation)" yielded 2 keyboards: "Russian", "Russian (Polyglot and
Reactionary)".

Neither keyboard was "phonetic". The phonetic keyboard has been with the
standard Ubuntu installs for at least ten years.

According to Gunnar Hjalmarsson "Ubuntu 21.04 is shipped with the same
version of the xkb-data package as in 20.04 and 20.10, so nothing has
changed. And multiple variants are available, including the one named
Russian (phonetic)." So this should be fairly easy to fix, no?

I find that the language settings are a little too complicated for me to
tamper with on the terminal, but I am including the information I was
able to collect:

~$ locale -a
C
C.UTF-8
en_AG
en_AG.utf8
...
nb_NO.utf8
POSIX
ru_RU.utf8
ru_UA.utf8

$ setxkbmap -print -verbose
Trying to build keymap using the following components:
keycodes: evdev+aliases(qwerty)
types: complete
compat: complete
symbols:pc+us+inet(evdev)
geometry: pc(pc105)
xkb_keymap {
xkb_keycodes  { include "evdev+aliases(qwerty)" };
xkb_types { include "complete"  };
xkb_compat{ include "complete"  };
xkb_symbols   { include "pc+us+inet(evdev)" };
xkb_geometry  { include "pc(pc105)" };

I am running the 16.04 in a vanilla-ish state, so it was with ligtdm.
I've tried to switch to gdm3. Nopes, that brought up flickering of the

As by at very least inference said 'lead' Niemeyer has made it very clear
that
there NEVER EVER WILL BE SUCH A SWITCH. So why would I waste
further time on this issue.

I had followed such thread from its inception and now only very
occasionally
mostly finding enjoyment at the ever more 'out there' reasons that are
proffered to validate the continuation that many have reviled. Many except
reasons were proffered and after about the first 100 such responses said
lead was downright surly if and when he responded to any further.

I can inform you that I had said miasma installed on a server. As I could
not
control the upgrade schedule I stopped using that particular system. After
a
time later when I assayed to restart the system it was not possible to do
that.
The system was locked into a perpetual loop which I could not break. I was
only able to break that loop by completely reinstalling the system. This
microsoft like control of behavior is something that I chose to reject many
many years ago when I was looking for an option that did not include
said companies then, and still today, software that specializes in porous
software.

Again - - - - - why would I waste time trying to convince someone who
hadn't been listening from the beginning of the argument that they were
not 'helping'. But then why would he or the team care - - - - this
procedure
is all about making more money on what is supposedly open source.

But then today's public is so enamoured of glitz and glitter than it just
doesn't understand that the is almost no privacy left and as far as
security - - - - why they think they don't need any - - - - - they trust
the
software companies. Sadly - - - - I do remember one of the slogans
that was bruted about when PCs were a newish thing - - - that is -
"Computing your way" implying and sometimes stating that the
previous rigidity in the corporate IT department had removed use to
the point where the user was never part of the equation. Somehow
it seems like we've come full circle - - - - we're back to where the IT

[Bug 1766377] Re: Intel Ethernet I218-V [8086:15a1] Subsystem [1043:85c4] detected Hardware Unit Hang

2020-07-07 Thread Dee Jay Randall
I don't know the performance impact. You can find the command in earlier
comments, but you basically want a variation of:
/sbin/ethtool -K eth0 gso off gro off tso off

with your network device substituted for "eth0".

If you simply run this manually after boot up, rebooting should turn it
back on (well, should restore default behaviour). Otherwise you can
probably revert with: /sbin/ethtool -K eth0 gso on gro on tso on

Re: [Bug 1839693] Re: p54usb module in linux-modules-extra-5.0.0-23-generic does not work

2019-08-29 Thread Dee Raj
Hi there, I hope all is well. I wanted to let you know that something odd keeps
happening now with the updated packages you sent me.
After about one week of use, the USB card stopped working. I thought maybe I
had run some software update and overwrite your files. So, I ran the command
you gave me ("sudo dpkg -i *.deb") and restored the packages you sent.
After another week, the same thing happened again - this time I am positive
that I did not run any software updates and yet the USB card once again stopped
working. I again ran "sudo dpkg -i *.deb" and restored your files and rebooted.
It started working same as normal.
So, I decided to write to you and let you know this. I have no idea why it's
happening, but two times cannot be a fluke.

Thanks, D E K E R

 Hi,
Please:
1. Create a new directory in your file browser
2. Download all the *.deb file in the link, put them into that new directory.
3. In that directory, right click (not on files, but anywhere else) will show
you an option "Open in Terminal"
4. In the newly opened terminal, execute the following command: "sudo dpkg -i
*.deb"
5. After it's done, reboot and see if the p52usb module works for you or not.

This test kernel installed on your system will be removed in the future
during the upgrade process.

Thanks

 Hi,
Please:

Thanks

2019-08-12 Thread Dee Raj
Hi there, sure I’m happy to try it. But I am a bit of a newbie, so I
need exact steps on how to install this kernel and even better perhaps a
screen share or some other way to communicate with someone while I am
doing it. Thank you.

[Bug 1839693] [NEW] p54usb module in linux-modules-extra-5.0.0-23-generic does not work

2019-08-09 Thread Dee Raj
Public bug reported:

This relies on the p54usb driver. It works great on kernel 4.18. I

[Bug 1530405] Re: NMI watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s! [kerneloops:814]

2017-02-26 Thread turoyo dee
after re-testing since a while back, now with 16.04.2, I was able to
isolate that acpi_osi parameter solves the shutdown issue from nouveau
"failed to adjust lnkctl speed"

update grub with:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi_osi=\"!Windows 2015\""

* I removed the quiet splash just to see boot logs in progress
* this worked with 16.04.1, I just didn't figure it out then

[Bug 1653015] Re: Random boot crash for Dell 7559 6700HQ with Ubuntu 16.04

2016-12-28 Thread turoyo dee
some notes:
  - I do not experience this crash with fresh install of 16.04.1 ( with kernel
4.4.0-31 )

this starts to happen when:
  - the kernel gets updated ( I observed it clearly with 4.4.0-51 , 4.4.0-57 )
  * it may have happened in 4.4.0-4* but I can't remember

once a kernel update happens, even when I revert to 4.4.0-31 and uninstall the
new kernel,
this issue persists

[Bug 1602888] Re: Dell Inspiron 7559 fans do not shut off once started, even when cool

2016-12-23 Thread turoyo dee
@penalvch, yes, I was planning to rebuild my previous setup ( that had
multiple issues ~4.4.0-51 or 53 ) for your suggested reporting

However, I just checked 4.4.0-57 during the week and noticed that my
fans have been able to stop ( without any manual fixes )

For reference, the history of my current machine is:
 - 16.04.1 installation
 - enable intel-microcode
 - blacklist nouveau
 - $ sudo update-initramfs -u [everything working ok after this, except
relentless fan issue]

 - accidental install of 4.4.0.53 [creates soft lockup boot issue not related
to this report]
 - move back to 4.4.0-31, uninstall 4.4.0-53

 - install 4.4.0-57 for testing [fans now turning off]

summary it really looks like the fan issue is fixed in latest update

additional observation:
this is the first time I see psensor report the GPU temp as 1 C, as it should
since I'm only using Intel HD Graphics

[Bug 1530405] Re: NMI watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s! [kerneloops:814]

2016-12-21 Thread turoyo dee
@dspjmr,

in my setup, I do not bother to install/run nvidia, and boot/shutdown works
fine.
during the times I have accidentally updated the kernel ( due to some other
package installation ), I only experience the boot issue ( and it is very
random, about 1 of 5 or maybe 1 of 8 boots ).

The only time I ever experience shutdown problem is on vanilla install ( step 1
in my setup )
but once I get the intel-microcode and blacklist nouveau, everything works fine.

@penalvch,

ok, I'll check, I just landed on these bug reports via google.

@penalvch , I have to ask why the issue is closed, since this was reported for
16.04 LTS.
and the recommended solution requires kernel 4.9, which is not even scheduled
for next point release [16.04.2 - 4.8].

2016-12-20 Thread turoyo dee
@seccanj , I have experienced this same issue and was able to solve with
the same steps.

 - install 16.04.1

 - get intel-microcode from "unity" -> "additional drivers"

 - blacklist nouveau

 - $ update init-ramfs -u

this resolves boot and shutdown lockup.

however, I've accidentally updated the kernel twice after resolving it
with these steps.

and in both cases, even after uninstalling the new kernel [ even latest
4.4.0-53]
the issue returns randomly on boot and even once on shutdown

[I'm using Dell 7559 6700HQ]
* also using acpi_osi="!Windows 2015" does not resolve this

[Bug 1602888] Re: Dell Inspiron 7559 fans do not shut off once started, even when cool

2016-12-11 Thread turoyo dee
Update from my test with ubuntu xenial:
 - installed 16.04.1
 - updated to 4.8.12
[my test may not be as useful because of this, but I did not have a lot of
time, and decided to proceed with latest release]
 - installed nvidia 375.20 and switched to intel graphics
 - replaced grub parameter quiet splash with acpi_osi="!Windows 2015" as
suggested
 - installed powertop and set tunables to good as suggested

results are the same as my normal setup
 - fans start to run at ~15 min. after boot ( on practically idle ), fans kept
running until ~1 hr. uptime. ( checked twice, both cases essentially idle )

on the upside, powertop is one additional tool that I can no use to
maybe squeeze out additional couple minutes of battery runtime.

[Bug 1602888] Re: Dell Inspiron 7559 fans do not shut off once started, even when cool

2016-11-14 Thread turoyo dee
I have similar battery-life as filsd on full workload ( but my setup is
very difficult to replicate on windows - different IDEs, and so on ).

However, on relatively idle load, min brightness with wifi on.
windows reads 5+, even 6+ hours on ( on first 10+ min. )
while ubuntu reads 4.75 hrs. max ( on first 10+ min. )

* I note first 10+ min. because once the fans start on ubuntu, even when
idle, battery estimate goes down dramatically at less than 4 hrs.

* also added a psensor reading at

[Bug 1602888] Re: Dell Inspiron 7559 fans do not shut off once started, even when cool

2016-11-12 Thread turoyo dee
@peter-biely, I'll recheck during this weekend.

In the meantime, as I previously indicated, I tried 16.10, and unfortunately:
problem persists. fans keep spinning even when idle.

I have also tried i8kutils while on 16.10, and find that it works fine.
 - turns off fans properly according to config threshholds
 - turns on proper fan speed according to proper threshhold
 - when daemon is turned off at idle, BIOS automatically kicks in and runs the
fans

and I've also tried i8kutils on my working system (16.04) and it works alright
 - the difference I notice is that BIOS doesn't seem to automatically turn on
fans
when I turn off i8kmon ( unlike in 16.10 ), however I tested the BIOS' ability
to run
the fans by running a heavy task and it does start the fans at some point

 * this is the only observeable difference I see between i8kutils on
16.10 vs 16.04

as observed in other posts, despite this solution via i8kutils, windows
is still able to better optimize idle state on skylake.

in the meantime, i8kutils is nice to have, battery improved from ~3.5 to ~3.75
on my typical load:
2 ides, 1 container + additional services.

[Bug 1602888] Re: Dell Inspiron 7559 fans do not shut off once started, even when cool

2016-11-10 Thread turoyo dee
I have just tried simply removing the bottom cover and holding the
laptop against an electric fan. And the fans stopped spinning.

I had to run several applications and execute a heavy task to re-trigger the
fans. Fans start at max speed for a few seconds and then settle down at
typical low speed.
I was able to repeat and confirm this fan response.

It seems the fans are configured to stop only at very very low
temperatures.

[Bug 1248256] Re: [MacBookPro10, 1] Plugging in displayport monitor causes kworker to take 100% CPU

2016-10-08 Thread Dee
Not sure the status of this bug, but I just installed Ubuntu
5.4.0-6ubuntu1~16.04.2 with Linux version 4.4.0-38-generic on a dual
core machine with an onboard GeForce 9400.

I ran into the issue of one of the cores running at 100% when ever I
turned on my monitor and connected to the terminal via DVI/HDMI. If I
reboot and only ssh to the machine I get <1% usage across both cores at
idle, but as soon as I switch on the monitor one of the cores jumps to
100%

I ran "sudo perf record -g -a sleep 20" then "sudo perf report --sort
comm, dso" and this is what I found in the report:

- 100.00%99.85% kworker/1:7 [kernel.kallsyms]
   - 100.00% ret_from_fork
kthread
worker_thread
  - process_one_work
 - 99.97% nvif_notify_work
+ nouveau_connector_hotplug
 + 0.03% nvkm_notify_work
 + 0.00% vmstat_update
 0.00% native_write_msr_safe
- 100.00% 0.09% kworker/1:7 [nouveau]
   - 99.88% nvif_notify_work
  - nouveau_connector_hotplug
 - 99.87% drm_helper_hpd_irq_event
- 99.86% nouveau_connector_detect
   + 96.48% drm_get_edid
   + 3.39% i2c_transfer
   + 0.00% drm_mode_object_find
+ 0.00% mutex_unlock
 + 0.01% mutex_lock
   + 0.09% ret_from_fork
   + 0.03% nvkm_notify_work
+ 99.96% 0.00% kworker/1:7 [drm_kms_helper]
+ 99.93% 0.05% kworker/1:7 [i2c_algo_bit]
+ 96.56% 0.01% kworker/1:7 [drm]
+0.01% 0.00% kworker/1:7 [forcedeth]

So it looks like I got struck but this same hotplug issue. If I connect
to my monitor via VGA i don't get the CPU spike...works for me since I
am running my machine headless but if anyone else needs to connect via
HDMI/DVI this could be an issue. I'm not sure if installing the nvidia
drivers fixes the hotplug cpu spike up.

freezes my Arch-linux and nothing, even kernel panic message wont get
into my journal logs, it just ok and then everything freezes, cant tty
cant nothing, you are not alone, my wacom works allright on 4.3 kernel,
so you might want to try that series or if your tablet is older, try
kernel 4.1 series. We can only hope it will be fixed in 4.5 (as many
wacom devs said it has been merged to it), I would appretiate if you
could test 4.5 rc4 ? maybe to observe the wacom behavior and report
back? I am far from my machine and if you will get freezes on 4.5rc4
kernel series and freezes continue I would try to push devs harder to
fix the driver.

It's not relevant but heres my output w/o plugged wacom

[Bug 1471238] Re: BCM43142 will stop working when signal is below 55%

2015-10-16 Thread Anthony Dee
Further update,

The issue remains, I didn't notice it because in Arch linux the driver
had better performance and from my AP distance I was kinda OK, however
when I have moved for a few metters the signal drops to ~55% and the
issue persisted in kernel 4.2.

It is driver issue though

[Bug 1471238] [NEW] BCM43142 will stop working when signal is below 55%

2015-07-03 Thread Anthony Dee
Public bug reported:

Lenovo ThinkPad E545

Network controller : Broadcom Corporation BCM43142 802.11b/g/n (rev 01)

If you are using this WIFI card, beware that *bcmwf-kernel-source* does perform
very badly with a newer version
of the *bcmwf-kernel-source* 6.30.223.248-bdcom-0ubuntuXX (XX I have tried them
all and all are not working)

Desripction of what is happening:

You are connnected to a network (does not matter on the router config or
router) and when you are at signal level cca 55% and less the internet
drops and you are offline (still connected but no packets get in or out)
for a long period of time (restarting card works for a few moments when
the drop occurs again)

---

*bcmwf-kernel-source* 6.30.223.141 works as it should, but I am stuck in
kernel 3.13 as I want to go kernel 3.19 and I can't because I have to
use newer bcmwf and it is unstable, very much.

[Bug 1311828] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT

2015-06-16 Thread Dee
I receive this bug every boot/login time of my ubuntu. Fortunatelly it's not
too often. Everything else works, so it's not a terrible problem, just look
very bad when someone is watching.
Retyped some error message details:
Ubuntu 14.04, (in reality it is Xubuntu)
amd64,
proc cmdline: /use/bin/X -core : -seat seat -auth /var/run/lightdm/root/: -
-novtswitchnolisten tcp vt
Uname: Linux 3.13.0-54-generic x86_64
Some packages reported as "old", updates are on everyday: initscripts,
libapparmor, sysv-rc, sysvinit-utils

@manolo: Reporting library allows to ignore future similar bugs by
crossing a checkbox, switching to another Os is not necessary

[Bug 121356] Re: options usbhid mousepoll=x ignored

2015-04-20 Thread Anthony Dee
Hello,

I hope I'm not causing any annoyance but I am desperate to change my
mousepoll rate in linux mint 17.1

And I have tried alot of solution, none of them worked.

I have in
# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded
# at boot time, one per line. Lines beginning with "#" are ignored.
# Parameters can be specified after the module name.
lp
rtc
-r usbhid
usbhid mousepoll=2

and I have created file

# /etc/modprobe.d/options
options usbhid mousepoll=2

Then I have ran

sudo update-initramfs -k all -u

rebooted and with no luck, I am still at 125mhz (my mouse is 1000mhz
capable, I had 1000mhz when running Feisty)

I would like to mention that

sudo rmmod usbhid
sudo modprobe usbhid mousepoll=2
wont change the polling rate to 500Hz

[Bug 1317108] Re: dead keys not play randomly, tildes no funcionan aleatoriamente

2015-04-07 Thread Anthony Dee
I can confirm this.

Using Linux mint 17.1 and after starting TexMaker I am not able to type
"ó" it results always as " ´o ".

If I switch windows back and forth I am able to type ó, but after moving
my text cursor with arrows the keyboard gets screwed again.

This is serious f*ck up.

HAS to be fixed, it affects other qt5 apps
