[Bug 1313539] Re: [DisplayPort] monitor shows black screen and "no input signal" after turning the monitor off and on manually

2016-04-10 Thread dhd
I experienced this problem when I switched from DVI to Display-port due to
purchase of a a new monitor "LG 34UC97" running a resolution of 3440x1440.
- (K)Ubuntu version is 15.10
- drivers installed are "plain" out of the box, more or less beside the usual
"apt-get upgrade".
- GPU is definetly a "nvidia geforce gtx 750 TI", however ubuntu reports it as
a "GTX 970". My previous ubuntu (?) reported the card correctly.
- nvidia drivers are the one installed via kubuntu, namely 352.63. I tried to
"handinstall" the latest from nvidia but that screwed up so I rolled back.

1) The problem occurs in the following cases:
a) user must be logged in. screen-log or not, does not matter.
b) display-port attached monitor is switched off (e.g. over night).
c) monitor is switched on but complains now about not receiving a display.

2) The problem does NOT occur when:
a) no user is logged in, e.g. only kdm/lightdm login screen is there.
b) on windows 10 ( I have installed parallel)

I assume the GPU switches off its "service" via display-port to the monitor
once the monitor is switched off.
However it does not resume "service" when the monitor comes back again.

The problem cannot be so difficult to solve as it does not happen in 2b)
and especially in 2a) mentioned before.

Are there any consolidated updates and solutions for the topic?

thanks.

[Bug 531622] [NEW] Unclear label text in vino-preferences

2010-03-03 Thread dhd
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vino

The English translation of vino-preferences window has an option called
"Configure network automatically to accept connections". It is not at
all clear what this means. The tooltip says something about UPnP on the
router. I know what UPnP is, but I have no idea what it has to do with
sharing my desktop, and I suspect your average user doesn't even know
what UPnP is.

If this option does something useful, either the label text or the
tooltip, or maybe both, should make it obvious what it does. Otherwise
it should be removed, perhaps in favor of a more useful option.

I should add that the wording of this option is awkward for native
English speakers. I *think* it should be "Configure network to
automatically accept connections", and the author is laboring under the
delusion that "split infinitives" are to be avoided. See:

http://ling.ed.ac.uk/~gpullum/grammar/splitinf.html

But I can't really tell because I don't know what the option does.
Maybe it just configures the network automatically so that other
computers can find mine, and I have to check a different box to make my
computer automatically accept those connections?

[Bug 529337] Re: Hangs for a long time when editing labels on large files

2010-02-28 Thread dhd
One other comment - I discovered in the code that the karaoke window
only uses the first label track. So you can work around this bug by
inserting a bogus empty label track before the one that you actually
want to edit.

[Bug 529337] Re: Hangs for a long time when editing labels on large files

2010-02-28 Thread dhd
Yes, still present in the latest snapshot. GDB says it is hanging in
Lyrics::Add - it also spends a lot of time there when loading the
project or importing the label track.

Which is a bit strange since the lyrics/karaoke window is not even
visible. I guess that's why it's called 'experimental' :)

Once experimental lyrics support is disabled there are some other label
editing bugs, but this is the worst one...

[Bug 529337] [NEW] Hangs for a long time when editing labels on large files

2010-02-27 Thread dhd
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: audacity

How to trigger this bug:

 1) Create a fairly long audio file (in this case 45 minutes)
 2) Create a label track with a bunch of long labels in it (i.e. transcriptions)
 3) Try to edit the text in one of the labels, preferably the first one

Audacity will freeze for quite a long time.

Actually label editing has a bunch of problems but this one is
particularly bad... It turns out that the code that's responsible is
the "experimental lyrics window", which can be shown when you choose
"Karaoke..." from the View menu.

You can easily disable this "feature" by commending out the
EXPERIMENTAL_LYRICS_WINDOW line in src/Experimental.h, which makes it
possible to edit label texts. But I'm sure some people out there
actually use it...

week or two. I finally got a backtrace for one of them, though. I
don't know if this is repeatable, but I was scrolling in Google Maps
when it happened, specifically at:

[Bug 359653] Re: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 61s! [hald-addon-stor:3486]

2010-01-18 Thread dhd
I haven't experienced this problem since doing two things:

 1) Switching to a SATA hard drive with a separate controller card. However,
this just caused my machine to lock up randomly without printing any useful
messages...
 2) Upgrading my kernel to 2.6.32-10 from Lucid. This has (so far, knock on
wood) fixed all of my hanging and stability issues.

I think there is something very wrong with 64-bit 2.6.31 on older AMD
processors and VIA chipsets, from the sounds of it...

[Bug 507243] Re: Fresh install of Karmic locks up hard when using browser and listening to music

2010-01-18 Thread dhd
This bug, and a variety of other stability related issues, seem to be
fixed in Lucid. And, specifically, updating to the Lucid kernel
2.6.32-10 packages also fixes them in Karmic for me.

Note that I still have stability issues when using 2.6.32 mainline from
the PPA.

[Bug 507243] [NEW] Fresh install of Karmic locks up hard when using browser and listening to music

2010-01-13 Thread dhd
Public bug reported:

I recently re-installed Karmic on a new disk. Since then I have had at
least one hard lockup per day. By "hard lockup" I mean a complete
lockup that leaves no trace in /var/log/kern.log, and does not respond
to any Alt+SysRq combinations.

The only thing that I can think of is that this *always* happens when I
am listening to music and using Firefox at the same time. Usually when
scrolling a web page or doing some other action with the mouse.

I don't really know how to get more information about this, sorry. At
first I thought that adding "noapic" to the kernel command-line would
help, since it cured my earlier lockup problems, but no such luck.

If this continues I might try installing Jaunty or Intrepid to see if
they have the same problem.

Resuming from hibernation also doesn't work anymore, but that's an issue
for another bug I guess...

[Bug 401098] Re: Cannot change default network connection

2010-01-11 Thread dhd
One can of course fix this by setting the "interface" value in
/desktop/gnome/remote_access to "eth0" using gconf-editor or gconftool.

But that seems needlessly obscure.

[Bug 401098] Re: Cannot change default network connection

2010-01-11 Thread dhd
I have this problem, but worse - my computer has a public IP address,
128.2.xxx.xxx, on eth0, and an internal network on a eth1, 10.42.43.1.
vino-preferences seems to randomly choose one or the other each time I
click on "Allow other users to view your desktop". So I am never quite
sure if I can actually VNC to it!

[Bug 505230] Re: ibus-pinyin not working on fresh install

2010-01-10 Thread dhd
It is working now, but in order to make it work, I had to:

 1) Log out
 2) Log in with the language set to Chinese
 3) Log out again
 4) Log in with language set back to English

Interestingly enough, the "py" input method worked fine for me even when
ibus-pinyin didn't.

[Bug 505230] [NEW] ibus-pinyin not working on fresh install

2010-01-09 Thread dhd
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ibus-pinyin

Steps to reproduce this (on my computer at least):

1) Install Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit Desktop for English.
2) Go to the Language Support control panel and install Chinese (Simplified)
and Chinese (Traditional).
3) Add PinYin to the top of the list of input methods in ibus-setup.
4) Activate ibus.
5) Try to type something in pinyin ... no Chinese characters appear and no ibus
window either.

How can I try to debug this problem? I tried removing and reinstalling
ibus-pinyin and the language packs.

[Bug 291287] Re: ubiquity crashed with RuntimeError in progress_loop()

2010-01-08 Thread dhd
I was reinstalling 9.10 from CD when I got this. I actually noticed
that my previous (upgraded) 9.10 system was very unstable until I added
"noapic" to the kernel command line. Perhaps this is related to that
problem.

[Bug 495939] Re: File mode specification error: (file-error "Cannot open load file" "sb-html")

2009-12-14 Thread dhd
Oh I found the offending hook, it is in /etc/emacs/site-
start.d/51speedbar.el, which is from the speedbar package (which I have
no memory of installing, actually!)

So this is more likely to be a bug in speedbar.

I did previously use emacs22 and emacs-snapshot.

[Bug 495939] Re: File mode specification error: (file-error "Cannot open load file" "sb-html")

2009-12-14 Thread dhd
Hi, here's the backtrace with emacs -q and debug-on-error set to t:

Debugger entered--Lisp error: (file-error "Cannot open load file" "sb-html")
  require(sb-html)
  (lambda nil (require (quote sb-html)))()
  run-hooks(text-mode-hook sgml-mode-hook html-mode-hook)
  apply(run-hooks (text-mode-hook sgml-mode-hook html-mode-hook))
  run-mode-hooks(html-mode-hook)
  html-mode()
  set-auto-mode-0(html-mode nil)
  set-auto-mode()
  normal-mode(t)
  after-find-file(t t)
  find-file-noselect-1(# "~/foo.html" nil nil "~/foo.html" nil)
  find-file-noselect("~/foo.html" nil nil t)
  find-file("~/foo.html" t)
  call-interactively(find-file nil nil)

One detail that may be relevant here is that I have Emacs.toolBar: 0 in
my .Xresources. However, if I remove this resource, I still get the
same problem.

This occurs regardless of whether foo.html already exists or not.

audio and browsing the web at the same time. I am not sure if this is
the same bug as all the other ones that have "stuck for 61s" in their

people are having it.

[Bug 359653] Re: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 61s! [hald-addon-stor:3486]

2009-11-27 Thread dhd
Hi. I have this problem every day with Karmic. It is always 61s. As
with the paraiko above I thought it was related to the nvidia drivers,
but I get it with the nv driver too. And, like paraiko, with the nv
driver I also can't resume from hibernation - it just hangs.

Usually I get the BUG: when listening to music and web browsing at the
same time. Lately, though, the process that seems to be hanging is
usually 'fuser' (which is a bit odd, I wonder what is running this so
often).

And why is it always 61s?

This is definitely NOT fixed in karmic for me, in fact, I did not get it
with Jaunty.

One other data point here, though - I have a DVD-RW drive in my system
which seems to be malfunctioning. I'm not really sure if it is the
drive itself, or the cable (I swapped cables with the hard drive and
it's still broken), the driver, or the motherboard. I have also gotten
lockups with hald-addon-stor which are surrounded by a bunch of "ata1:
lost interrupt" and similar messages.

See the attached file for examples. The motherboard has a VIA V8T890
chipset and the CPU is an Athlon 64 X2 3800+

workaround is to type "%autocall" to turn off autocall magic (whatever

(not sure how to attach that here)

[Bug 461220] [NEW] Gnash can't play MySpace music

2009-10-26 Thread dhd
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnash

Hi,

Gnash won't load the music player plugin on MySpace band pages. For
example: http://www.myspace.com/bazookacrossover

I've attached the Gnash debug log. Apparently this has to do with
missing support for Flash 9 and AVM2:

7180:1] 12:12:26: UNIMPLEMENTED: SWF9 is not fully supported, trying
anyway but don't expect it to work

7180:2] 12:12:26: ERROR: This SWF file requires AVM2, which was not
enabled at compile time.

Is there a more recent version of Gnash that does? The upstream bug
tracker seems to believe that this is fixed...

likewise I think it started yesterday for me. it looks like the most
recently updated gstreamer package is gst-plugins-good0.10, from Monday:

gst-plugins-good0.10 (0.10.16-1ubuntu3) karmic; urgency=low

  * backported debian change:
  * debian/patches/000{1,2}-equalizer*.patch:
+ Patches from upstream GIT to fix equalizer in stereo mode and
to use better filters for the first and last band.
  * debian/patches/00[1-20]-pulse*.patch:
+ Patches from upstream GIT to improve PulseAudio plugin and fix
some major issues, like decreasing the volume after every track
  in some cases.
  * debian/patches/70_latency_update_returns_null.patch:
- the change is in the new version

[Bug 456273] Re: Playback freezes when playing ogg files

Yes. Totem does this too. You can easily reproduce this, just drag an
ogg and an mp3 file into the playlist pane and hit play. Totem will
pause in "Playing" state once it switches to the mp3.

[Bug 456273] Re: Playback freezes when playing ogg files

2009-10-20 Thread dhd
Hi ... I'm affected by this too. It definitely happens repeatably when
switching from mp3 to ogg. It seems to pause for about 5-6 minutes and
then start up again.

I added a sequence of mp3, ogg, speex, and aac to my play queue and
captured rhythmbox's debug output. Here are the relevant parts from
when I start playing (the gory details of loading my music library have
been redacted). You can see the difference between when the track
switches and when it actually starts playing by looking at the tick_cb
messages - they show the same stream position for a long time, then
finally switch. I've edited the file so this is more obvious.

As expected it also pauses when switching to speex and aac. It seems
like the pause gets longer each time.

The question is ... is this a rhythmbox or a gstreamer bug? I believe I
noticed similar behaviour in totem recently too.

[Bug 434730] Re: Cannot invoke XIM input method

2009-10-17 Thread dhd
Hi. Yes, I have this problem too. As suggested in various things on
the web, it is possible to work around this by launching emacs from the
command-line with:

LC_CTYPE="zh_CN.UTF-8" emacs

Some more detail on this:

http://code.google.com/p/ibus/issues/detail?id=458

I guess this affects a fairly small segment of the user population
(people with English language desktops who need to type Chinese), but
it's still a bit annoying that Emacs refuses to integrate with the
desktop...

[Bug 414560] Re: ath9k disassociates/reassociates a lot

2009-10-15 Thread dhd
The default kernel (as of 2.6.31-14.47) also disassociates repeatedly
for me, using wicd, on the CMU network (it doesn't do it at home
though). With linux-backports-modules-karmic it seems to work pretty
smoothly - I was unable to completely run "apt-get update" before, now
it works...

Likewise, pinging and downloading a CD image seem to be working okay
with backports-modules (version number is 2.6.31-14.16).

This is on an eeepc 1005HA.

One additional data point here - with 2.6.31-12, I had the
disassociation problem on campus at CMU (hundreds of access points,
usually 5-10 of them visible at once, unsecured network), but not at

[Bug 414560] Re: ath9k disassociates/reassociates a lot

2009-10-08 Thread dhd
hi, i'm running 2.6.31-12.41 on an eeepc 1005ha. with network-manager I
get a lot of the bogus roaming from bug #291760. If I switch to wicd,
which doesn't roam automatically, I get the disassociation/association
problem:

Oct 8 13:40:03 bluesy kernel: [ 543.544154] wlan0: no probe response from AP
00:1a:1e:1e:d2:40 - disassociating
Oct 8 13:40:03 bluesy kernel: [ 543.565826] ath9k: DMA failed to stop in 10
ms AR_CR=0x0024 AR_DIAG_SW=0x0020

What I've just seen is:

 1) Load the module and connect
 2) Under heavy traffic (branching a large bzr tree over ssh) I get 2-3
disassociations over a minute or two
 3) After this the disassociations stop, but the network performance is lousy
(about 10% packet loss)

This is on an academic network with hundreds or thousands of different
APs, but I've been in the same room for the last few hours.

[Bug 444217] [NEW] ath9k regression in 2.6.31-11

2009-10-05 Thread dhd
Public bug reported:

I'm actually using 2.6.31-10 to type this, because 2.6.31-11 is unusable
on my eeepc 1005ha. It connects to a wireless network, but the
connection silently stops working after about 10-20 seconds. The system
log doesn't show any failures, and iwconfig, ifconfig, and network-
manager still think that the connection is up, but it no longer sends or
receives data.

Not sure what changed in the ath9k driver, but something is definitely
broken. 2.6.31-10 doesn't have this problem (though of course it has
others).

[Bug 441475] [NEW] ath9k not working on resume

2009-10-03 Thread dhd
Public bug reported:

After suspending and resuming my eeepc 1005ha, the wireless no longer
works. When I run "iwlist wlan0 scan" I get:

dhugg...@bluesy:~$ iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0 Failed to read scan data : Resource temporarily unavailable

Removing and re-inserting the ath9k module makes it work again -
scanning works and I can connect to the network.

Is there some way to force this module to be unloaded and reloaded on
suspend/resume? Or, I suppose, it would be even better if the driver
supported suspend and resume :-)

[Bug 439752] [NEW] BUG: soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 61s! [firefox:22662]

2009-09-30 Thread dhd
Public bug reported:

This just started happening after the upgrade to kernel 2.6.31-11. It
has happened three times so far today, the last one was when I was away
from the computer - I came back to find it locked up. Since one CPU is
still okay, it doesn't lock up hard, but as soon as I try to run
something it hangs.

I'm not sure if this is a duplicate with other soft lockup bugs because
some of them are quite old. This literally just started happening
yesterday.

[Bug 439497] [NEW] songbird crashes with missing symbol in _gst.so

2009-09-30 Thread dhd
Public bug reported:

When trying to run songbird, I get the following error:

././songbird-bin: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-
packages/gst-0.10/gst/_gst.so: undefined symbol: gst_task_pool_get_type

I think this is related to some particular plugin that it is trying to
load, since other python-gstreamer things seem to work.

[Bug 425881] Re: language panel does not show up

2009-09-22 Thread dhd
So, eventually, this problem went away for me, but I can't exactly
explain how. IIRC running /usr/lib/ibus/ibus-gtk-ui (or whatever it's
called ... sorry, i don't have that computer with me right now) manually
made it appear, and then it was magically there the next time I logged
in.

[Bug 433308] [NEW] can't connect to a2dp device

2009-09-19 Thread dhd
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Hi, I have one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/Jensen-WBT310-Universal-Bluetooth-
Receiver/dp/B000CMU1NM

It is just a garden variety A2DP device, looks like headphones, and
works fine with, e.g. SymbianOS and MacOS.

I could swear that it worked fine in Jaunty although my memory isn't so
clear on that. Anyway, in Karmic, I can successfully pair with it but I
can't connect to it. If I select "Connect" in the device's submenu from
the Bluetooth tray icon, it does nothing. It doesn't show up in the
Audio Preferences device list, so PulseAudio doesn't know anything about
it.

I don't know where to report this bug, but it Just Does Not Work... and
it seems like other people are actually using A2DP semi-successfully.

[Bug 427725] [NEW] Typing "lian" in py-b5 makes ibus-m17n crash

2009-09-11 Thread dhd
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ibus-m17n

To reproduce this bug:

 1) Select py-b5 input method in ibus
 2) Type "lian"
 3) ibus (and whatever program you're typing into) will crash

I'm not sure how to get a debug log though... there doesn't seem to be
anything in .xsession-errors about this. Apport says that the bug was
caused by an assertion failure.

[Bug 425902] [NEW] can't activate ibus in emacs22-gtk

2009-09-07 Thread dhd
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: emacs22

1) Enable ibus for input methods using im-switch -s ibus, make sure ibus-daemon
and ibus-ui-gtk are running
2) Set up some hotkey for ibus that doesn't conflict with any Emacs
keybindings, Ctrl-` for instance
3) Try to trigger ibus in emacs...

Emacs says "C-` is undefined"

Likewise if you want to use the standard Alt-`, and you global-unset-key
M-` and A-` in Emacs, it does the same thing.

The workaround is to keep the ibus language panel on all the time, which
is kind of annoying.

[Bug 425882] [NEW] language panel does not show up

2009-09-07 Thread dhd
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ibus

Hi, I decided to try to switch from SCIM to iBus in Karmic since it is
supposed to be the wave of the future.

First, I tried to run:

im-switch -s ibus

But this did not work because I had a broken link in ~/.xinput.d/en_US

After removing this link, I was able to enable ibus. I logged out and
back in and tried to use it.

It does appear to allow me to input Chinese characters, however, it
refuses to show the language panel, which makes Pinyin input completely
useless. Changing the setting in ibus-setup to "always" show it still
doesn't cause it to appear.

If it makes any difference, I removed all of the hotkeys except Alt-
Grave, since I don't have most of them and Ctrl-Space is kind of
important for Emacs.

Is there any way that I can debug this? I'm mystified as to what
program actually runs to show the panel in the first place.

Also, I don't have a notification icon for ibus (strangely enough I had
one if I started it up when I had SCIM running...)

[Bug 420057] [NEW] Xorg crashes with kernel 2.6.31-7-generic on EEE 1005HA

2009-08-27 Thread dhd

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Upon upgrading Karmic from 2.6.31-5 to 2.6.31-7 on my EEE PC 1005HA,

going back to the old kernel solves the problem. I've attached the Xorg

Hmm... just now, upon resuming from hibernation, pulseaudio was using
16% of CPU doing nothing.

However once I killed the pulseaudio process (and it respawned) it is no
longer doing this. I have version 1:0.9.14-0ubuntu20

[Bug 291760] Re: network-manager roams to (none) ((none))

2009-05-16 Thread dhd
I worked around this bug by installing wicd. People should stop saying
that it is a kernel or driver bug, or a wpa_supplicant bug. It is a
NetworkManager bug, because wicd does not have this problem.

In the specific case where I see it, which is a campus network with
hundreds of access points, wicd shows me all the separate access points
but doesn't roam between them gratuitously. I get 35-40% packet loss
with NetworkManager and 0-1% packet loss with wicd.

I'm really amazed that the upstream developers are either not aware or
don't want to fix this!

Thanks, that's really helpful. Maybe someone should change the title of
the bug, then, because I'm certainly still experiencing something which
could be described as "network-manager roams to (none) ((none))".

[Bug 291760] Re: network-manager roams to (none) ((none))

2009-05-01 Thread dhd
Hi, unfortunately, this patch does not entirely fix my problem. I'm
seeing roaming to (none) ((none)) less frequently, but it is still
happening. Likewise I still have between 10 and 45% packet loss due to
gratuitous roaming every 3-10 seconds. Another example:

May 1 13:43:01 slim NetworkManager: (eth1): supplicant connection
state change: 7 -> 3

Yes, for me, fixing the BSSID in the connection editor seems to work, as
one might expect, since it prevents the gratuitous roaming.

[Bug 291760] Re: network-manager roams to (none) ((none))

2009-02-13 Thread dhd
In my case this is a very large campus-wide network with hundreds of
access points. For some time I believed that the problem was related to
specific access points but it seems to happen pretty much everywhere on
campus at this point. The operations people say that while the amount
of traffic on the wireless network has increased somewhat in the last
year, they aren't seeing roaming problems or massive packet loss (I am
getting about 30% on average due to this problem) like this, at least,
not on Windows or Mac OS X.

I strongly suspect network-manager is to blame, and as I mentioned,
upgrading from Hardy to Intrepid has only made the problem worse - where
before it would randomly roam to a different access point, now it roams
to (none) and back. Something in its logic that makes it decide when to
switch access points (an action which I'm pretty sure is under the
control of userspace and not the driver!) is broken.

[Bug 291760] Re: network-manager roams to (none) ((none))

2009-02-05 Thread dhd
Seems this problem has been around for quite some time:

http://www.mail-archive.com/networkmanager-l...@gnome.org/msg07839.html

Here's one complete cycle of "roaming" for me, with Intrepid. It used
to be that it would roam between different access points, but now it
roams from one to (none) to another:

Feb 5 10:15:42 slim NetworkManager: (eth1): supplicant connection state
 change: 7 -> 3
Feb 5 10:15:42 slim NetworkManager: (eth1): supplicant connection state

(): Roamed from BSSID 00:1A:1E:91:11:A0 (CMU) to (none) ((none))
Feb 5 10:15:44 slim NetworkManager: (eth1): supplicant connection state
 change: 0 -> 4
Feb 5 10:15:44 slim NetworkManager: (eth1): supplicant connection state
 change: 4 -> 7
Feb 5 10:15:47 slim NetworkManager: (eth1): supplicant connection state
 change: 7 -> 3
Feb 5 10:15:47 slim NetworkManager: (eth1): supplicant connection
state change: 3 -> 0
Feb 5 10:15:47 slim NetworkManager: (eth1): supplicant connection
state change: 0 -> 4
Feb 5 10:15:47 slim NetworkManager: (eth1): supplicant connection

Feb 5 10:15:48 slim NetworkManager: [1233846948.431113]
periodic_update(): Roamed from BSSID (none) ((none)) to 00:1A:1E:91:09:40 (CMU)

This is also the ipw2100 driver, as in the link I posted above
(specifically a Thinkpad X31).

[Bug 196277] Re: [hardy] keyboard layout switching shortcut doesn't work after reboot

2008-07-22 Thread dhd
Hi, I haven't yet checked to see if anything in -proposed fixes it (I
tried the new gdm, which doesn't).

However, I can confirm Peter Hutterer's explanation for the bug. It's
really easy to verify. Just do this:

 1) Enable autologin
 2) Go to the console and run sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
 3) While gdm is starting up, press a lot of random keys. Don't stop until you
see the GNOME panel appear.
 4) VoilĂ ! (hey, my compose key works)

[Bug 196277] Re: [hardy] keyboard layout switching shortcut doesn't work after reboot

2008-07-18 Thread dhd
Are you running Hardy or Intrepid? I am totally up to date on Hardy on
three different machines, and I can assure you that the exact sequence
of actions mentioned in, among others, bug reports 173721, 182336, and
222653, will show this bug every single time.

If this has been fixed in Intrepid then this fix needs to be isolated
and backported to Hardy, right?

[Bug 196277] Re: [hardy] keyboard layout switching shortcut doesn't work after reboot

2008-07-18 Thread dhd
Okay, that makes perfect sense, except that it's not at all clear if
it's possible to change the XKB layout for a specific device. It's
something that, in the new age of MPX, really ought to be possible, but
from what I understand, it would require XKB to be aware of XInput and
multiple devices, which I don't think is the case (see
http://www.fooishbar.org/talks/fosdem-xkb.pdf).

I suppose that what we could do is have libxklavier recopy the XKB
layout to the server every time it gets an XkbNewKeyboardNotify event.
Which, ironically, is more or less the opposite of what it currently
does (it updates its cache from the server's information when it gets
this event - this is the source of those "red herring" messages above).

[Bug 196277] Re: [hardy] keyboard layout switching shortcut doesn't work after reboot

2008-07-17 Thread dhd
The libxklavier author is correct, this is not a bug in libxklavier. It
does everything exactly as it should, and calls XkbWriteToServer() to
set the new keymap, and checks its return value. I have verified this.

The problem is that XkbWriteToServer() is failing silently, for no
apparent reason, during startup when autologin is enabled (or, it seems,
when GNOME is started via xinit). And yet it works just fine once
everything has settled down.

I conjecture that the reason it works with manual login is because in
that case, the X server has completely started up well before the point
where GNOME tries to apply keyboard settings.

Maybe moving gnome-settings-daemon later in the startup sequence would
fix this? I'm revealing my ignorance of how GNOME actually starts up
here...

[Bug 196277] Re: [hardy] keyboard layout switching shortcut doesn't work after reboot

2008-07-17 Thread dhd
One more data point here to consider. When I have autologin on, and I
run 'setxkbmap -print', it actually does show the options which were set
by libxklavier:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ setxkbmap -print
xkb_keymap {
xkb_keycodes  { include "xfree86+aliases(qwerty)"   };
xkb_types { include "complete"  };
xkb_compat{ include "complete"  };
xkb_symbols { include
"pc+us+level3(ralt_switch_for_alts_toggle)+group(alts_toggle)+compose(rctrl)"
};
xkb_geometry  { include "pc(pc101)" };
};

However, these options have not actually been set in the server! As
everybody else mentioned, running setxkbcomp with no options (which
actually compiles the description and loads it into the server) makes
these settings active. This is equivalent to running:

setxkbmap -print | xkbcomp - :0

These options aren't stored in any configuration file, so setxkbmap
*must* be getting them from the X server somehow, right? And yet, for
some reason, the server knows about the uncompiled form of the keyboard
description but hasn't actually loaded it...
