[Bug 1893562] Re: Second equal USB card reader not detected

2020-09-04 Thread effell
Yes, in my case the serial numbers are also identical.

I skimmed through the bug you link to and it seems the fix requires a
non-trivial change to udev, which explains why this hasn't been fixed.

Thanks!

[Bug 1893562] [NEW] Second equal USB card reader not detected

2020-08-30 Thread effell
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS, gnome-disks 3.28.3.

Two exactly equal USB card readers ( 05e3:0749 genesys logic ) are
inserted, each containing a formatted SD card, each with a single
partition.

Both disk partitions are correctly assigned devices on insertion.

Only whichever adapter is inserted first automounts (as checked by
mount) and only that adapter is listed in Gnome Disks.

Both partitions names are listed in the gnome Places menu.

After mounting the second partition via the Places menu, still only the
first adapter is listed in Gnome Disks.

The error occurs with NTFS, FAT or ext4 SD card partitions.

This should be pretty easy to track down, but I can run more tests if
required.

Cheers!

Had this problem with a Sansa Clip. This is a fix.Following a suggestion
in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/345916, either deactivate

/usr/share/hal/fdi/preprobe/10osvendor/20-libgphoto2.fdi

by renaming it to say 20-libgphoto2.fdi.old

OR back it up and then delete out the portion of that file that handles
a match with your Sansa device.

but somehow allows the CF card to be seen.
If you boot without an SD card in the adapter, then again the CF card is not
recognized.

- yes such bug using 2.6.22.16 (current) from ubuntu reps.

[Bug 147464] Re: Heavy network activity (eg: torrent/nfs file transfers) causes Hard System Locks and/or Network Freezes.

2008-12-03 Thread effell
This is a serious bug. I experienced it with the generic kernel a good while ago
and managed to get around it by compiling my own kernel from kernel.org.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ uname -a
Linux localhost 2.6.23.9 #1 PREEMPT Fri Dec 7 07:16:40 WET 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

So, I'm still using Ubuntu 7.10 with this kernel and maybe I'm missing all
kinds of
security upgrades. Not good.

PS This other kernel also solves bug #43092, which is also alive and
kicking.

[Bug 258899] Re: Flash videos on sites such as The Daily Show stopped working

2008-11-12 Thread effell
Getting the newer plugin .so into /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree did not
work for me.

Also instead of a gray field, I am getting a link to "Get flash player".
Anyone getting this?

(I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 with Firefox2, perhaps time to upgrade to the
newest bugs.)

[Bug 147464] Re: Heavy network activity (eg: torrent/nfs file transfers) causes Hard System Locks and/or Network Freezes.

2008-10-13 Thread effell
I encountered this bug on my (non x64) Thinkpad using a 3G/GPRS modem.
As I stated then, "Updating the kernel from 2.6.22-14-generic to
2.6.23.9 seems to have eliminated this bug from my system."

The solution (to at least one bug) is in the diff between those Ubuntu-
generic and the kernel.org kernels.

I have since stopped using said modem, so I can't help with further
testing.

Same problem here with FF2, ubuntu 7.10. Can't watch neither TDS nor Colbert

For the time being, I have found a tiresome workaround,
create a small html with the embed reference found next to the clips on those

[Bug 43092] Re: CompactFlash PCMCIA disk is not detected

2008-08-12 Thread effell
Re this problem, for a thinkpad X31 running Ubuntu 7.10:
- stock kernel 2.6.22-15-generic is buggy.
- home-compiled kernel 2.6.23.9 is not buggy.

Ubuntu is a great OS, but it is weird that a kernel.org kernel works better
than what they cook up.
What gives?

[Bug 43092] Re: CompactFlash PCMCIA disk is not detected

2008-04-14 Thread effell
I can confirm this problem using the stock 2.6.22-14.

Some time ago I built a 2.6.23 kernel in order to bypass ubuntu bug
147464 (a HARD LOCK on heavy internet traffic) and as luck would have it
CF works great with that non-Ubuntu kernel. It does have the ide-cs
module.

I congratulate the Ubuntu team on making me see the usefulness of
building my own kernel. Great fun. Granted I use an obscure brand of
laptop, the "Thinkpad X31".

[Bug 147464] Re: Heavy network activity (eg: torrent/nfs file transfers) causes Hard System Locks and/or Network Freezes.

2007-11-04 Thread effell
A long shot: here's a possible extra clue for solving this problem.
Twice after freezing this way and being left alone for a while, my
Thinkpad X31 would not even turn on with the battery plugged in -- it
was necessary to remove it. Some sort CMOS corruption connection?

Anyway, again if anyone working on this wants specific trace info or
some test performed, please do ask.

[Bug 147464] Re: Heavy network activity (eg: torrent/nfs file transfers) causes Hard System Locks and/or Network Freezes.

2007-11-02 Thread effell
Just to clarify the above, I didn't mean that no lockup occurs above
80kBps, only that it occurs even at speeds (as low?) as below 80.

The hardware seems fine: ran self-test on CPU, ran memtest, network card
runs fine on another laptop. The lock-up occurs only under heavy network
traffic, so I'm leaning towards a software cause and I think some sort
of postmortem info would be the most useful. I'll go and find out how to
obtain that, but would appreciate pointers on how to do it in this
specific circumstance, ie, full lock-up.

Still, for kicks I'll also add further data points by running live CDs
later on.

Running FC7 on the same card/network (but different Thinkpad) has been fine.

Not running NDISwrapper, not even a wifi card. This is a 3G cellular
data card, showing up on a couple of ttyUSB ports courtesy of the kernel
