[Bug 178303] Re: f-spot 2 picasaweb failed to upload

2008-11-17 Thread erythrocyte
Hi,

I have to confirm that that trying to export to Picasa Web using F-spot
fails on Ubuntu 8.04. I have now uninstalled F-spot from Ubuntu.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Choose any JPEG photo (single or multiple) and goto PhotoExportPicasaWeb
2. F-spot crashes

Debug output follows.

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2008-11-06 Thread erythrocyte
Mark Shuttleworth responded to a question from somebody who obviously
was aware of this issue and brainstorm idea
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/15153/ [Canonical And Dell Should
Issue Official Statement About Hard-Drive Killer Bug] on the #ubuntu-
classroom IRC channel on Freenode today. [jcastro aka Jorge Castro was
moderator. sabdfl is aka Shuttleworth]. Pasting the transcript here for
commentators:

--
15:39 jcastro QUESTION: Does Canonical ever make Official Policy
Announcements on contentious issues? Two recent controversies were the hard
drive wear issue and the issue with the Intel network cards being bricked. Are
there official guidelines on what should be done when Ubuntu can possibly
damage hardware?
15:40 sabdfl yes, we have a process for handling emergencies and screwups
15:40 sabdfl including making sure that we communicate clearly about what the
situation is
15:40 sabdfl unfortunately we have that because there have been emergencies,
and we have in the past occasionally screwed up
15:40 sabdfl but i think the policies are good
15:41 sabdfl i don't think such an issue is contentious - if we make a mistake,
we need to sort it out, and keep people briefed
--

I think we should be pretty optimistic about hearing an official
statement soon! wuhoo! :)

PS: couple of other hardware compatibility questions were relevant too
such as:

--
16:25 jcastro QUESTION: The hardware database mentioned earlier seems limited
to certifying whole machines. It seems like it would be more useful for most of
us if we had a listing of individual hardware products that were known to work
(or not work), particularly video and wireless cards...
16:25 jcastro QUESTION: .. Yet few wireless vendors would see the point in
submitting their hardware for certification unless there were already a
database to be added to. Is there a plan to get that sort of certification?
16:25 sabdfl i think jcastro pointed to the hardware database earlier
16:26 sabdfl we try to aggregate the information folks send us about their
hardware
16:26 sabdfl it's difficult to do component-level certification
16:26 sabdfl because often, something breaks at the system level
16:26 sabdfl we do work with component manufacturers, though, if there is a
machine that needs to be enabled
--

I had missed the earlier questions, so asked this crucial question just
in case:

--
6:55 jcastro QUESTION: how robust is the laptop certification process between
Canonical and its partners? should customers expect 0% system breakage (in
terms of hardware or software)?
16:56 sabdfl they should expect it, and we strive to deliver it
16:56 sabdfl see above for how we handle emergencies and screwups :-)
--

cheers everybody! #ubuntu-classroom is a great place to hang out! :D

@ Botond Szász

thanks for agreeing with me on this. i've opened up a brainstorm page to
get this going and would like to see other users who see an official
statement from Canonical/Dell as crucial, cast their votes of support.
The idea is #15153 Canonical And Dell Should Issue Official Statement

please do cast your votes today everyone!

2008-11-01 Thread erythrocyte
i own a Dell Inspiron 1525 (officially listed as affected by this bug),
and all the back and forth talk with regard to whether or not this bug
has actually been fixed, is the number one reason why i haven't already
installed ubuntu on my laptop... it would be great if the core team
working on this bug along with Canonical and Dell, issues a loud and
clear official statement to clear up the confusion.

[Bug 252213] [NEW] kchmviewer won't open files when file path includes media:/... or system:/...

2008-07-26 Thread erythrocyte
Public bug reported:

I've tried opening chm files in both Konqueror and Dolphin via
kchmviewer and when the path to such files includes a media:/ or
system:/ , it can't open them. It will however open files when the
actual path to the files such as /media/sda5/ebook/chmfile is used. I
think that this could be a regression that has appeared in Kubuntu 8.04
(KDE 3.5.9) as there's a similar bug #29738 at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kchmviewer/+bug/29738 which has
been marked fixed.

[Bug 242153] Re: Bookmarks feature of google toolbar is not working in the Ubuntu firefox 3.0 version

2008-07-18 Thread erythrocyte
Doing the following solved the problem for me:

1.Uninstall the google toolbar
2. sudo apt-get install libnspr4-dev libmozjs-dev
(libstdc++5 wasn't installed and neither were libxul-dev nor gcc-4.1 . I had
gcc-4.2 and it worked.)
3. Reinstall google toolbar

Marking this bug fixed/solved.

I have Kubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron (KDE 3.5.9) and it has become dead slow
(4mins) at boot (at the reading files needed to boot stage) after a
couple of updates a few days ago. Adding clocksource=hpet to my kernel

Could someone please take a look and see if I need to file a new bug

@zolle:

In Kaffeine's Handbook on Kubuntu 8.04 LTS look at Chapter 2. Player

Apparently Kaffeine can either use xine or gstreamer . Afaik, mplayer is
just another frontend to either xine or gstreamer. I guess you'll have
to download the kaffeine-gstreamer package to enable the gstreamer
engine.

My Kubuntu 8.04 LTS is the 32 bit version. I just discovered something
quite interesting about youtube videos. When I view them through
http://video.google.com , flash plays perfectly - there is both picture
and sound. The same videos on youtube.com however, come up as grey boxes
with sound but no picture.

Maybe something to do with the way youtube (and dailymotion, etc.) embed
flash videos on their sites?

Also I happened to stumble upon this from KDE docs:-

http://docs.kde.org/stable/en/kdebase-runtime/faq/webbrowser.html#id2558174 ?

Does it have anything to do with the erratic grey boxes phenomenon that
so many of us are facing?

The following are screenshots depicting the grey box phenomenon on my

Hi Emanuel,

I'm just guessing if this problem could be related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nspluginwrapper/+bug/174343
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdebase/+bug/184149/
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kmplayer/+bug/190168

The workaround at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kmplayer/+bug/190168 works
for me (although not perfectly). I compiled kmplayer from source with
npplayer support.

Could Konqueror be using flashplugin-alternative.so instead of
libflashplayer.so even though /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree has been added to
pluginsscan folders, and some conflict coming into play?

[Bug 190168] Re: Please rebuild kmplayer with NPP support

2008-04-10 Thread erythrocyte
This workaround does the job very well. It's not perfect though. For
example, playing flash radio on last.fm doesn't work. There's another
problem too. Maximizing flash videos to full screen is buggy. :-

1.Go to youtube.com
2. Open up a video
3. Maximize video to full screen.
4. It works

Now do the following:

Repeat steps 1 and 2, then before step 3 click on the KDE Panel. The KDE
Panel covers the lower portion of the video. A workaround for this
problem is to enable hiding the KDE Panel by:

1.Right Click KDE Panel
2.Goto Configure Panel
3.Choose the appropriate hiding settings from the Hiding section

None of these problems occur with Firefox.

[Bug 200636] Re: Clicking on Report a Bug in the Help menu doesn't result in anything happening

2008-03-10 Thread erythrocyte
** Description changed:

I'm on Ubuntu 7.04, using Abiword ver 2.4.6 from the repos. Clicking on
Report a Bug in the Help menu doesn't result in anything happening.
- I hope someone can find a fix for this soon.
+ Note that this problem is specific to the abiword package. The abiword-
+ gnome package works as expected. I hope someone can find a fix for this
+ soon.
