It's also the fact that 'User Interface' is meaningless to most people non technical. I'm not so concerned about the positioning of it as people can find it if it has a sensible name (although you're right, the beginning is better) but with a name like User Interface they're likely to avoid it. [Bug 918573] Re: Ubuntu one not syncing large number of files properly
Ok, just an update, I have done a diff on the files in one that has sync'd pretty much all my files and the one that has only sync'd around 21GB and it seems to be the large files that have not sync'd which is mainly videos. The file count only differs by about 100 files (12,665 as opposed to 12,768) so it appears to be having trouble with the larger files. The system is fully up to date though. [Bug 918580] Re: System Settings 'User Interface' name is bad in 12.04
I see the comment but there doesn't appear to be any reason for it! I think they're just not thinking of the non technical user. If my girlfriend, her parents or my dad (all Ubuntu users but far from technical) saw the term "User Interface" they wouldn't know what it was and they certainly wouldn't click on it because it has the term 'Interface' in, which sounds technical and low level. They are quite happy to click on a button that is labelled "Appearence" though as it has more meaning to them. It's this sort of terminology that just puts people off Linux and keeps its reputation as a techies playground. The designrs should remember that people who aren't technical, especially those who are older, are afraid that what ever they do on a computer is going to break it and unfriendly names like that is just going to intimidate more. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/918580 Title: System Settings 'User Interface' name is bad in 12.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/918580/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 918580] [NEW] System Settings 'User Interface' name is bad in 12.04
Public bug reported: I updated my 12.04 installation and noticed that in the System Settings section that Appearance has changed its name to User Interface. That name is a term that beginner users will not be familiar with and will most likely avoid clicking. Appearance is a much better name and has more meaning for the end user. [Bug 918573] [NEW] Ubuntu one not syncing large number of files properly
Public bug reported: I have a photos filder with just under 13,000 files (photos and videos in, and no it's not porn) which totals around 28.5GB in size that I sync with my Ubuntu One account. However, yesterday I checked one of the machines it is syncd to, which is apparently up to date, and it reports 23.1GB of data as the files size. I suspected something strange and I've now checked my 2 machines at work and one reports 21.4GB and the other 28.4GB. All of these claim to be fully sync'd with my account. Luckily I have a backup of the folder before it got chewed by Ubuntu One but I would still like the service to sync properly. I reported this issue shortly after 11.10's release but was informed that a patch was being released related to larger files not syncing properly (bug 872924) and that 'appeared' to fix my problem (although i completely re-syncd my folder), but it looks like it hasn't. ** Affects: ubuntuone-client (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/918573 Title: Ubuntu one not syncing large number of files properly To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntuone-client/+bug/918573/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 893782] [NEW] Unity Dash home has wrong layout
Public bug reported: I think that the dash home layout should be reconsidered. The first screen is shortcuts which seems a little redundant when you have the dock to stick your commonly used applications. It also means that to launch an application that is not in your dock you have to click on dash home, click the applications button on the bottom, click to open the filters if you want to use it, click the "See more results" button, find your app and then lose it. This is far too many clicks and the layout of the applications tab is horrible as it has the "most used" filter and the "Available for Download" filter taking up a lot of real estate on what is already a small window. I think the search at the top is good as it gives quick access if you know the name of the program but I think the install dash screen should be the applications window that only shows the installed tab and the "available for download" and "most used" filters should be closed (not even have one row of icons) or maybe added to the filters section. This means that used will be able to navigate to their programs easier. This would accommodate power users who can type the program they want to use and novice users who can find their program without going through a maze of buttons and filters to find it. Programs should be no more than 2-3 clicks away but this dash makes them 5-6 clicks which is too many. The filters are a good idea but they should be less prominent. You could also consider moving the filters for applications to the left side of the screen so that once you have clicked the dash home you can move to the filter and then to the application. This seems like a more logical and faster means of getting to your content. ** Affects: unity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/893782 Title: Unity Dash home has wrong layout To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/893782/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 893771] [NEW] UbuntuOne sits idle most of the time when it shouldbe syncing files
Public bug reported: This is not something new for UbuntuOne but I was hoping it would have been fixed 2 years down the line. When I try to sync a large number of files with ubuntuone, like my pictures folder which has a good 11 or 12,000 files in, it seem to spend long periods of time not syncing any data. If I drop the same files in Dropbox it syncs in a night. UbuntuOne seems to take over a week just doing a couple of gigs a night. When I do a u1sdtool --status is just says it's processing the queues like it would when it's syncing. This has always been the case and I think it is about time this was fixed. UbuntOne might well give 5GB of free space and offer cheap alternatives to dropbox but it's no use to anyone if you can't sync the data up to it! ** Affects: ubuntuone-client (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/893771 Title: UbuntuOne sits idle most of the time when it shouldbe syncing files To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntuone-client/+bug/893771/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Further investigation showed that a large majority of folders about 3 levels deep into the folder hierarchy have been given u1conflict file extensions. Public bug reported: After upgrading to 11.10 I disconnected my account from UbuntuOne but after doing so Nautilus still shows all the sync icons even though the UbuntOne client shows that I have no account associated with the machine. I have not tried replicating a second time but I have all the latest updates installed and have rebooted the machine several times. Copying files into folders with the sync'd icon brings up a pending sync icon (arrows in a circle) showing it is still monitoring the folders but it doesn't actually sync the files with the account, which is correct. u1sdtool shows the following: ~$ u1sdtool --status State: READY connection: Not User With Network description: ready to connect is_connected: False is_error: False is_online: False queues: WORKING Please see the attached screenshot to see the problem. I originally removed the machine from my u1 account using the desktop client on the actual machine itself. [Bug 869834] [NEW] ubuntu.com has no information about the upcoming 11.10 release! How should people know it's coming?
Public bug reported: When I browse to the Ubuntu website there is no information about the upcoming 11.10 release. This should be advertised about 4 weeks in advance to get people aware that it's coming and of the release date. Hype should be built up about it to get people interested in the new features and probably encouraged to try the betas out if they can to help out. There was a section a couple of weeks ago about the beta but it contained very little information about the release and was not as well presented as it could be. The website look fantastic and it wouldn't take someone long to put a page together stating the new features with a release date. All successful products do this and Microsoft and Apple both start advertising their new released a few weeks in advance to spread the word its coming. The page should be graphical and nicely laid out like the one that describes the current release to show people clearly what is coming and not just list out a block of text about it with bullet points. This works for techies but doesn't appeal to the average user who wants things to look nice and see new features that make Ubuntu more appealing to use. [Bug 861700] [NEW] Click and drag does not work properly on Macbook installations of Ubuntu 11.10
Public bug reported: An installation of Ubuntu 11.10 on my Macbook Air does not seem to be able to click and drag things properly. If I want to move a window I have to click down on the trackpad and with the same finger drag the window around without keeping my finger pressed down on the button. This is an unnatural way to use the trackpad and is completely different to Mac OS X and makes its use very difficult. The correct means of doing this is to have one finger pressed down on the trackpad for the mouse click and then use another finger to drag the window (or what ever) around the screen. The problem is that I have two finger scrolling turned on, so as soon as I put a second finger down the the trackpad it thinks that I want to scroll. What it should be checking is that if the mouse button is pressed and there are 2 fingers on the trackpad then only one finger should be registered for movement and not apply the two finger scrolling (if you see what I mean :) ). I will explain further if needed but really it needs someone with an Apple trackpad to be able to relate to what I'm saying. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/861700 Title: Click and drag does not work properly on Macbook installations of Ubuntu 11.10 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/861700/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 861694] Re: Ubuntu 11.10 install on Macbook has no right click
Ah I've literally (after an hour or two of trying) just figured it out just after filing this report. You have to click on the trackpad with 2 fingers to get a right click. This still needs to be made clear in the trackpad UI as I was completely lost as googling didn't return anything. [Bug 861694] [NEW] Ubuntu 11.10 install on Macbook has no right click
Public bug reported: I installed the latest build of Ubuntu 11.10 today on my Macbook air and although my trackpad has the ability to right click in OS X it doesn't work in Ubuntu. I have to plug an external mouse in to get it working which makes the install effectively useless as I don't want to carry a mouse around with me. By default on Mac OS X there is no right click but it can be turned on in the trackpad configuration options, so I know it is possible. There are 2 options to fixing this as far as I can see, one is to enable the right click to happen when pressing down on the right side of the trackpad and/or implement a secondary click by pressing the left ctrl or cmd key and click like in Mac OS X. This will then provide a familiar interface for Mac users when making the move to Ubuntu making the transition easier. This is quite critical as it is the only thing that is really stopping this install being perfect as it works exceptionally well on my Macbook Air other than that! ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/861694 Title: Ubuntu 11.10 install on Macbook has no right click To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/861694/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 861446] [NEW] Mac installer for 11.10 has bad trackpad defaults for Macbook
Public bug reported: I just installed the beta 2 of Ubuntu 11.10 on my Macbook Air and the mouse was a nightmare to use until I changed the options in the system settings of the installer. It defaulted to tap to touch which a Mac user would not be used to, especially as pressing down on the touchpad is a click. It also seemed a bit sensitive. This option should be turned off as it conflicts with the standard usage of clicking. It made dragging windows around and clicking menus a nightmare. The options to use 2 fingered scrolling (both vertical and horizontal) should be turned on by default as well to give Mac users a familiar interface to operate Ubuntu with. If having this Mac specific build is to give users more Mac friendly options then they should at least be enabled by default to provide a familiar interface for the user. Also note that these options are the default in the installer and on a fresh installation and should be changed in both. ** Affects: unity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/861446 Title: Mac installer for 11.10 has bad trackpad defaults for Macbook To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/861446/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 861450] [NEW] Unity (Compiz) Exposé should be mapped to the Mac exposé key for Mac installs of Ubuntu 11.10
Public bug reported: This is more a wishlist than bug I suppose but it should be simple to implement. I installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my Macbook Air earlier and after booting into my new system I noticed all the special keys were mapped nicely to their related function except exposé. As Unity allows this by default (alt+w) I think it would be good for Mac users to have this mapped to this key by default as it is a very useful function. This is clearly a bug as there needs to be a disable switch or never option in the drop down. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/853914 Title: Cannot disable the monitor turn off option in the screen settings To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/853914/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 412390] Re: twitux differentiates avatars based on avatar image name, not on user name
I have attached a fix for this issue in bug 339257 which fixes both this issue and the one raised in #339257. The images now use the individual username for the images so there can be no duplicates. -- twitux differentiates avatars based on avatar image name, not on user name https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/412390 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 339257] Re: Twitux deals badly with missized images
I have added a patch for this issue (it also fixes bug 412390 in the same patch). The fix is as described by Antoine Leclair. ** Attachment added: "Fix for bug 339257 and 412390" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/38805067/twitux_0.69-0ubuntu2.debdiff -- Twitux deals badly with missized images https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/339257 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
