Should Launcher icon size not be in the Universal Access are of the
Setting section in the seeing tab? If not exclusively then maybe as well
as?

[Bug 918580] Re: System Settings 'User Interface' name is bad in 12.04

2012-01-27 Thread feasty
I think either style or look is a good name for the first tab. I'm more
in favour of look because I think that best encompasses the background,
theme and launcher icon size options.

Rename it to Desktop??? Everyone is happy with Appearance and that would
keep it consistent with previous releases.

[Bug 918580] Re: System Settings 'User Interface' name is bad in 12.04

2012-01-26 Thread feasty
It's also the fact that 'User Interface' is meaningless to most people
non technical. I'm not so concerned about the positioning of it as
people can find it if it has a sensible name (although you're right, the
beginning is better) but with a name like User Interface they're likely
to avoid it. It's a poor choice of name and had no justification for it
in the design.

[Bug 918573] Re: Ubuntu one not syncing large number of files properly

2012-01-25 Thread feasty
Ok, just an update, I have done a diff on the files in one that has
sync'd pretty much all my files and the one that has only sync'd around
21GB and it seems to be the large files that have not sync'd which is
mainly videos. The file count only differs by about 100 files (12,665 as
opposed to 12,768) so it appears to be having trouble with the larger
files. The system is fully up to date though. I will complete your
request at some point soon but upload is not an issue so I don't know
how much that information you requested will help. It just appears to
affect systems I add to my U1 sync as they appear to think they are in
sync when they aren't.

[Bug 822054] Re: suspend / sleep / resume fails on macbook in oneiric 11.10

2012-01-19 Thread feasty
This affects fresh installs too. If I suspend or hibername my macbook
air (version 3 1.4ghz core 2 duo) then it does not wake the screen and
mine is from a clean install, of which I have done several on this
machine since the beta. It appears that the system wakes though as I
heard a sound from mine earlier when I tried it again. It just appears
to be the screen not waking.

[Bug 918580] Re: System Settings 'User Interface' name is bad in 12.04

2012-01-19 Thread feasty
I see the comment but there doesn't appear to be any reason for it! I
think they're just not thinking of the non technical user. If my
girlfriend, her parents or my dad (all Ubuntu users but far from
technical) saw the term "User Interface" they wouldn't know what it was
and they certainly wouldn't click on it because it has the term
'Interface' in, which sounds technical and low level. They are quite
happy to click on a button that is labelled "Appearence" though as it
has more meaning to them. It's this sort of terminology that just puts
people off Linux and keeps its reputation as a techies playground. The
designrs should remember that people who aren't technical, especially
those who are older, are afraid that what ever they do on a computer is
going to break it and unfriendly names like that is just going to
intimidate more.

[Bug 918580] [NEW] System Settings 'User Interface' name is bad in 12.04

2012-01-19 Thread feasty
Public bug reported:

I updated my 12.04 installation and noticed that in the System Settings
section that Appearance has changed its name to User Interface. That
name is a term that beginner users will not be familiar with and will
most likely avoid clicking. Appearance is a much better name and has
more meaning for the end user. These sorts of terms need to be avoided
if Ubuntu wants to target less techy users and portray itself as a user
friendly environment.

[Bug 918573] [NEW] Ubuntu one not syncing large number of files properly

2012-01-19 Thread feasty
Public bug reported:

I have a photos filder with just under 13,000 files (photos and videos
in, and no it's not porn) which totals around 28.5GB in size that I sync
with my Ubuntu One account. However, yesterday I checked one of the
machines it is syncd to, which is apparently up to date, and it reports
23.1GB of data as the files size. I suspected something strange and I've
now checked my 2 machines at work and one reports 21.4GB and the other
28.4GB. All of these claim to be fully sync'd with my account. Luckily I
have a backup of the folder before it got chewed by Ubuntu One but I
would still like the service to sync properly. I reported this issue
shortly after 11.10's release but was informed that a patch was being
released related to larger files not syncing properly (bug 872924) and
that 'appeared' to fix my problem (although i completely re-syncd my
folder), but it looks like it hasn't.

[Bug 865193] Re: Windows keep losing focus in Ubuntu 11.10

2012-01-16 Thread feasty
Hmm, it does sound like you have a different problem. If you go to the
top right of this screen you should be able to find the "Report bug"
button. I would simply report your problem and state your symptoms and
someone will pick the bug up. I think the otherone is undecided because
it is incomplete (does not have enough information to diagnose).

If you went through an upgrade path to 11.10 a user on the other bug
report suggests installing freshly from a disc resolves the issue. Did
you upgrade or install from fresh?

[Bug 865193] Re: Windows keep losing focus in Ubuntu 11.10

2012-01-16 Thread feasty
I've not had the problem I described here since the beta of 11.10. Could
it be something you've installed taking focus? Have you tried Ubuntu to
see if that does the same as this is likely to be KDE specific where as
I was reporting a problem with Unity? I would maybe spin up a live CD
and see if it does the same. If not then create a new bug report and
make it clear that it is happening on the KDE desktop.

This could be a duplicate of bug 848115 as it does sound similar.

[Bug 897143] [NEW] Ubuntuone does not display the correct usage size

2011-11-28 Thread feasty
Public bug reported:

After syncing my files to ubuntuone I was concerned that not all my
files were been sync'd to my cloud as the usage reported was far less
than what I had actually sync'd. After sync'ing my account on another
machine I have found that all my files have been sync'd successfully but
the size reported by ubuntuone is incorrect. I have about 30GB of files
sync'd but u1 says that I have 27.9GB sync'd. This could cause massive
confusion to customers as well as potentially lose Canonical money as
they are able to sync more files than their limits allow.

Please see the attached screenshot which was taken on my client machine
which was a fresh install that had been signed in with ubuntuone.

[Bug 893824] [NEW] Ubuntu One does not clean up all folders after deleting them

2011-11-22 Thread feasty
Public bug reported:

I recently deleted a large folder structure containing a lot of files as
UbuntuOne decided to add u1conflict to a lot of the folders but when I
did I found that the client on my desktop said the sync was complete but
the web UI showed that several folders (no files) still existed. It is
simply one folder structure several folders deep but remains on my
account. This means the cloud folders are out of sync with the client
side. There is no possibility of conflicts as there is only one desktop
that is syncing this folder.

[Bug 893782] [NEW] Unity Dash home has wrong layout

2011-11-22 Thread feasty
Public bug reported:

I think that the dash home layout should be reconsidered. The first
screen is shortcuts which seems a little redundant when you have the
dock to stick your commonly used applications. It also means that to
launch an application that is not in your dock you have to click on dash
home, click the applications button on the bottom, click to open the
filters if you want to use it, click the "See more results" button, find
your app and then lose it. This is far too many clicks and the layout of
the applications tab is horrible as it has the "most used" filter and
the "Available for Download" filter taking up a lot of real estate on
what is already a small window. I think the search at the top is good as
it gives quick access if you know the name of the program but I think
the install dash screen should be the applications window that only
shows the installed tab and the "available for download" and "most used"
filters should be closed (not even have one row of icons) or maybe added
to the filters section. This means that used will be able to navigate to
their programs easier. This would accommodate power users who can type
the program they want to use and novice users who can find their program
without going through a maze of buttons and filters to find it. Programs
should be no more than 2-3 clicks away but this dash makes them 5-6
clicks which is too many. The filters are a good idea but they should be
less prominent. You could also consider moving the filters for
applications to the left side of the screen so that once you have
clicked the dash home you can move to the filter and then to the
application. This seems like a more logical and faster means of getting
to your content.

[Bug 893771] [NEW] UbuntuOne sits idle most of the time when it shouldbe syncing files

2011-11-22 Thread feasty
Public bug reported:

This is not something new for UbuntuOne but I was hoping it would have
been fixed 2 years down the line. When I try to sync a large number of
files with ubuntuone, like my pictures folder which has a good 11 or
12,000 files in, it seem to spend long periods of time not syncing any
data. If I drop the same files in Dropbox it syncs in a night. UbuntuOne
seems to take over a week just doing a couple of gigs a night. When I do
a u1sdtool --status is just says it's processing the queues like it
would when it's syncing. This has always been the case and I think it is
about time this was fixed. UbuntOne might well give 5GB of free space
and offer cheap alternatives to dropbox but it's no use to anyone if you
can't sync the data up to it!

[Bug 893763] [NEW] UbuntuOne sync caused a lot of files to go to u1conflict even though there is one machine syncing

2011-11-22 Thread feasty
Public bug reported:

After sharing my Pictures folder in my home directory on my machine I
copied my photos folder into it to allow it to sync up to ubuntu one but
after 2 days of it syncing (most of the time ubuntuone seemed to be idle
instead of syncing) it said it was complete but has only sync'd 11gb of
photos out of 28GB. Further investigation showed that a large majority
of folders about 3 levels deep into the folder hierarchy have been given
u1conflict file extensions. This should not be possible though as this
is the only machine syncing the files up. I was freshly syncing all my
files up because of other bugs that appear to have been introduced with
11.10. There are a lot of entries in the syncdaemon log like the
following:

[Bug 871519] [NEW] Nautilus shows UbuntuOne sync icons after account has been disconnected, even after rebooting!

2011-10-09 Thread feasty
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to 11.10 I disconnected my account from UbuntuOne but
after doing so Nautilus still shows all the sync icons even though the
UbuntOne client shows that I have no account associated with the
machine. I have not tried replicating a second time but I have all the
latest updates installed and have rebooted the machine several times.
Copying files into folders with the sync'd icon brings up a pending sync
icon (arrows in a circle) showing it is still monitoring the folders but
it doesn't actually sync the files with the account, which is correct.
u1sdtool shows the following:

~$ u1sdtool --status
State: READY
connection: Not User With Network
description: ready to connect
is_connected: False
is_error: False
is_online: False
queues: WORKING

Please see the attached screenshot to see the problem. I originally
removed the machine from my u1 account using the desktop client on the
actual machine itself. Let me know if you need any more info to help you
replicate the issue.

[Bug 867794] Re: Ubuntu 11.10 does not enter 'discard' filesystem option on ext4 install on SSD drive

2011-10-07 Thread feasty
Thanks for the response but even still, I think it should warrant more
importance than wishlist as this affects the life and performance of the
hardware. The kernel has supported this feature since 2.6.33 and so I
think a little more urgency is required.

[Bug 869880] [NEW] Window dragging on Unity breaks window borders when dragging across desktops in workspace view.

2011-10-07 Thread feasty
Public bug reported:

When dragging windows from one desktop (workspace) to another in my
11.10 install it seems to break the window bar across the top. It can
also fail to highlight the desktop I am dragging it to properly. To
replicate open any application (e.g. firefox), press alt+s and drag the
window to another desktop. If you drag from the bottom right up through
the middle you will see the whole bar disappear and the destination
desktop doesn't light up.

Please see the screenshots for more information.

[Bug 869834] [NEW] ubuntu.com has no information about the upcoming 11.10 release! How should people know it's coming?

2011-10-07 Thread feasty
Public bug reported:

When I browse to the Ubuntu website there is no information about the
upcoming 11.10 release. This should be advertised about 4 weeks in
advance to get people aware that it's coming and of the release date.
Hype should be built up about it to get people interested in the new
features and probably encouraged to try the betas out if they can to
help out. There was a section a couple of weeks ago about the beta but
it contained very little information about the release and was not as
well presented as it could be. The website look fantastic and it
wouldn't take someone long to put a page together stating the new
features with a release date. All successful products do this and
Microsoft and Apple both start advertising their new released a few
weeks in advance to spread the word its coming. The page should be
graphical and nicely laid out like the one that describes the current
release to show people clearly what is coming and not just list out a
block of text about it with bullet points. This works for techies but
doesn't appeal to the average user who wants things to look nice and see
new features that make Ubuntu more appealing to use. The work that is
done is excellent so lets see the front page shout about it!!!

[Bug 865969] [NEW] Ubuntu 11.10 has no Ocelot photo to select as a desktop background

2011-10-04 Thread feasty
Public bug reported:

After updating at the weekend I now see the new desktop backgrounds for
Oneiric Ocelot but there is no photo of an Ocelot in there. After
looking at Google images I think it would be nice of a photo of it in
the wild would be included as the animal look amazing. In fact I think a
photo of every animal mentioned in the release name should be included
in future releases.

I also think the rendered Ocelot desktop should be the default
background after install as someone has gone to the effort of making it
for this release. It gives an indication of which version someone is
running on their desktop.

[Bug 861694] Re: Ubuntu 11.10 install on Macbook has no right click

2011-09-29 Thread feasty
For those that want to know I have found how to do a right click and
middle click on the touchpad:

For right click: Click down with 2 fingers
For middle click: Click down with 3 fingers

This option could still be made configurable to allow users to change
right click to be a click on the bottom right of the screen. I
personally prefer the currently implemented method though.

[Bug 861700] [NEW] Click and drag does not work properly on Macbook installations of Ubuntu 11.10

2011-09-28 Thread feasty
Public bug reported:

An installation of Ubuntu 11.10 on my Macbook Air does not seem to be
able to click and drag things properly. If I want to move a window I
have to click down on the trackpad and with the same finger drag the
window around without keeping my finger pressed down on the button. This
is an unnatural way to use the trackpad and is completely different to
Mac OS X and makes its use very difficult. The correct means of doing
this is to have one finger pressed down on the trackpad for the mouse
click and then use another finger to drag the window (or what ever)
around the screen. The problem is that I have two finger scrolling
turned on, so as soon as I put a second finger down the the trackpad it
thinks that I want to scroll. What it should be checking is that if the
mouse button is pressed and there are 2 fingers on the trackpad then
only one finger should be registered for movement and not apply the two
finger scrolling (if you see what I mean :) ). I will explain further if
needed but really it needs someone with an Apple trackpad to be able to
relate to what I'm saying.

Ah I've literally (after an hour or two of trying) just figured it out
just after filing this report. You have to click on the trackpad with 2
fingers to get a right click. This still needs to be made clear in the
trackpad UI as I was completely lost as googling didn't return anything.
This infact is actually the same way as it is implemented in Mac OS X.

[Bug 861694] [NEW] Ubuntu 11.10 install on Macbook has no right click

2011-09-28 Thread feasty
Public bug reported:

I installed the latest build of Ubuntu 11.10 today on my Macbook air and
although my trackpad has the ability to right click in OS X it doesn't
work in Ubuntu. I have to plug an external mouse in to get it working
which makes the install effectively useless as I don't want to carry a
mouse around with me. By default on Mac OS X there is no right click but
it can be turned on in the trackpad configuration options, so I know it
is possible. There are 2 options to fixing this as far as I can see, one
is to enable the right click to happen when pressing down on the right
side of the trackpad and/or implement a secondary click by pressing the
left ctrl or cmd key and click like in Mac OS X. This will then provide
a familiar interface for Mac users when making the move to Ubuntu making
the transition easier. This is quite critical as it is the only thing
that is really stopping this install being perfect as it works
exceptionally well on my Macbook Air other than that!

[Bug 861446] [NEW] Mac installer for 11.10 has bad trackpad defaults for Macbook

2011-09-28 Thread feasty
Public bug reported:

I just installed the beta 2 of Ubuntu 11.10 on my Macbook Air and the
mouse was a nightmare to use until I changed the options in the system
settings of the installer. It defaulted to tap to touch which a Mac user
would not be used to, especially as pressing down on the touchpad is a
click. It also seemed a bit sensitive. This option should be turned off
as it conflicts with the standard usage of clicking. It made dragging
windows around and clicking menus a nightmare.

The options to use 2 fingered scrolling (both vertical and horizontal)
should be turned on by default as well to give Mac users a familiar
interface to operate Ubuntu with. If having this Mac specific build is
to give users more Mac friendly options then they should at least be
enabled by default to provide a familiar interface for the user.

Also note that these options are the default in the installer and on a
fresh installation and should be changed in both.

[Bug 861450] [NEW] Unity (Compiz) Exposé should be mapped to the Mac exposé key for Mac installs of Ubuntu 11.10

2011-09-28 Thread feasty
Public bug reported:

This is more a wishlist than bug I suppose but it should be simple to
implement. I installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my Macbook Air earlier and after
booting into my new system I noticed all the special keys were mapped
nicely to their related function except exposé. As Unity allows this by
default (alt+w) I think it would be good for Mac users to have this
mapped to this key by default as it is a very useful function. It also
provides them with a familiar interface to work with, making transition
to Ubuntu a bit easier. I know this can be set after installing ccsm but
the user shouldn't have to do this.

[Bug 859484] [NEW] 11.10 Installer prompts for wifi connection when it is already connected

2011-09-26 Thread feasty
Public bug reported:

I installed the 11.10 beta 2 on my laptop last night and as soon as the
installer had loaded I was informed about available networks, so I
clicked in the top right hand corner on the network icon and connected
it to my home network. I then clicked through the installer screens when
it brought me to the connect to a wifi network screen, but I was already
connected! I simply clicked next without entering anything and it stayed
connected to my network but this can be confusing and annoying to anyone
installing Ubuntu. It simply needs to check if I'm already connected
before showing that section of the installer.

[Bug 855403] Re: Backup (Deja Dup) on Ubuntu 11.10 opens a backup window when auto backup kicks in and interferes with desktop usage

2011-09-25 Thread feasty
Ok, sounds good. Looking forward to seeing the final release.

** Description changed:

I was using the Unity desktop on my Ubuntu 11.10 install this morning
which has a daily backup to my Ubuntu One account enabled. As the
machine was shut down last night the backup kicked in within a minute or
two but opened a backup window right in the middle of my desktop. This
operation should be silent in the background and a notification should
be given when the operation has completed. It would also be nice if it
was integrated into the top panel like Time Machine on Macs and would
indicate to the user that a backup was taking place even if the Unity
  dock was hidden.

- In short, the program should maximise itself when the backup kicks in
- and interfere with the users work.

[Bug 853914] [NEW] Cannot disable the monitor turn off option in the screen settings

Public bug reported:

The monitor turn off option cannot be disabled in 11.10 when using
System Settings -> Screen. You can only set the option to go from 1
minute to 1 hour. This is clearly a bug as there needs to be a disable

Ran an apt-get dist-upgrade from the command prompt after doing a fresh

[Bug 412390] Re: twitux differentiates avatars based on avatar image name, not on user name

I have attached a fix for this issue in bug 339257 which fixes both this
issue and the one raised in #339257. The images now use the individual
username for the images so there can be no duplicates.
