Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to make this switch to a mainline kernel. Perhaps you can help me. I'm using a macbook Pro, running Kubuntu 13.10, although still using 3.5.0-19. [Bug 1091718] [NEW] 3.7 kernel and network manager do not play nicely in kubuntu raring
Public bug reported: Sorry - Ubuntu-bug didn't give me suitable options, and clearly some of the information it's reporting is just incorrect . I upgraded kubuntu 12.10 to 13.04 last night, and observed the update- initramfs bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kmod/+bug/1073062). Upon restart, KDE loads, but NetworkManager takes 100% cpu, and fails to allow wireless connections. (Changing the backend from NetworkManager to Wicd does not help.) However, if you restart and select the 3.5 kernel instead of 3.7 kernel, the problem disappears completely. [Bug 806255] Re: Unity/compiz intercepts keystrokes from grabbed windows.
I think this update has caused another bug - right clicking anywhere when running compiz - 1:0.9.7.0+bzr3035-0ubuntu1 in kde 4.8.1 (running latest updates in 12.04) causes the window decorations and panels to disappear and the windows all become fixed on the desktop. [Bug 760131] Re: Power consumption raised significantly in natty
Just to add a counterpoint, I've found that things are more or less working well for me with the new kernel - it's definitely better then the earlier versions. However, my biggest problem is the brcmsmac driver being pushed out without power management, which appears to be taking up to 5W (5W!) of power, and never less than (3.5W). I realize it's an unrelated bug, (I've filed it here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/867869), but the kernel is averaging 9-11W for the most part - which isn't too bad. [Bug 867869] [NEW] brcmsmac wireless driver does not have power management enabled and is eating batteries
Public bug reported: A lot of people have been reporting that the oneiric kernels have been sucking up power (which they were, early on), but a closer look shows that the kernel regressions are mainly all fixed - however, the brcmsmac wireless driver appears to be a main culprit left, sucking up to ~3W of power. As far as I can tell, the use of the brcmsmac wireless driver co-incided with the use of the introduction of the kernel bug that was making battery life poor for many oneiric users, and I suspect that this is one of the major contributors to that problem. Perhaps the brcmsmac should be rolled back until power management is available, or a push on this driver could possibly enable this feature. [Bug 852061] Re: Compiz on Kubuntu Oneiric does not show panels
This problem is still present, however, if I switch back to compiz, (compiz --replace), the panel remains, and I can continue using compiz as before. However, further bugs now show up. I can no longer close the panel settings dialog. Previously, attempting to close the panel settings dialog would cause compiz to hang (taking 100% cpu), although that now seems to no longer be the case. Instead, the panel settings dialognow remains open, and can not be hidden. (It is also present on all desktops. Oddly enough, I can click on things underneath (as the panel settings dialog is semi transparent... opening and "closing" it multiple times just makes it less and less transparent, although I can still click on things below, though I can no longer see them) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/852061 Title: Compiz on Kubuntu Oneiric does not show panels To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/852061/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 776824] Re: No panel and sidebar after enabling compiz cube
That does seem to be the case - turning off the cube and turning on the wall plugin returns the panels, but, the wall plugin completely messes up KDE - it no longer appears to be compatible. [Bug 852061] [NEW] Compiz on Kubuntu Oneiric does not show panels
Public bug reported: After a recent update this week, the latest version of compiz appears to prevent panels from showing up in KDE. 1) I am using Kubuntu Oneiric with all packages up to date. 2) The problem first occured in the past week, and is still present in compiz 1:0.9.5.94+bzr2803-0ubuntu5) 3) What I expect: When logging into Kubuntu, I should have the desktop appear, windows should appear, and the panel(s) should appear. Compiz should start, and I should be able to use compiz as I would use kwin, as a window manager. 4) What happens: when logging into Kubuntu, I see the desktop appear, I see a few windows appear, but the panels never show up. Compiz starts, and I can rotate the desktop cube, but I never have access to the menus or tools on the panel. 5) workaround. I can can right click on the desktop, and select "run command", then type in "kwin --replace". Immediately, my panels appear, and compiz is turned off. I still prefer to use compiz over kwin, so I would appreciate if anyone could tell me why panels are being blocked by compiz - or if I need to change a setting somewhere to make it work. (KDE compatibility is turned on in CCSM, although the KDE/QT event loop integration is turned off.) ** Affects: compiz (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/852061 Title: Compiz on Kubuntu Oneiric does not show panels To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/852061/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 760131] Re: Power consumption raised significantly in natty
Even if that were so, when my laptop goes into battery mode, with all of the aggressive power saving modes throttling the CPU, etc, it's unacceptable for it to be running so hot. I wouldn't normally care if it's plugged in and sucking up power, but when the power is supposed to be scaled back, it shouldn't be taking up more power ( even at the cost of decreased responsiveness.) In any case, as of yesterday, after a kernel update, my laptop is now consuming 14-17W of power when on battery, as opposed to the 19-25W it was taking last week. While not as good as the 11-14W range I had going with Maverick, it's an improvement. I don't recall seeing anything in the kernel changelog that would indicate a change to the power consumption, but I'm not a kernel expert. In any case, I have not altered any of my power saving optimizations between the two tests, and I had used the force acpi trick much earlier on. If it stays this way for now, that's not a bad sign. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/760131 Title: Power consumption raised significantly in natty To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-release-notes/+bug/760131/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 832426] [NEW] compiz crashed with SIGILL in CompWindow::destroy()
Public bug reported: 1) The release of Ubuntu you are using I'm using Kubuntu Oneiric with all of the up to date packages. 2) Version: compiz1:0.9.5.92+bzr2791-0ubuntu1 kdm 4:4.7.0-0ubuntu10 3) What I expected to happen: Opening any panel in KDE, I expect to be able to {resize, move items, open activities menu, etc} and then close the panel when I'm done. 4) What happens instead: I am able to successfully open any panel, manipulate objects, but the instant I try to close the panel (by clicking on the x or on the desktop), all mouse movement halts, Compiz goes to 100% CPU (taking up one CPU only) and the window environment siezes up. At which point, the only option available to me is to drop to a terminal (ctrl + alt + F1) to kill compiz (kill -9 only, all other levels appear to be ineffective at killing the process) and restart kdm (sudo service kdm restart). Compiz appears to recall any setting changes made to the panels upon restart. After killing compiz, I can return to KDE, but the environment is effectively useless. This is completely repeatable - and happens every time on both of my computers. 5) Other useful information: This happens on two separate computers, both of which were originally installed using 10.10. I've tried moving the ~/.kde folder on one computer, but that does not prevent the problem. (ie. it isn't a setting problem) I am using the nvidia binaries (nvidia-current), but both computers use completely different hardware (one is a macbook pro, the other is a desktop PC using an AMD chip.) This appears to be software related, and has been present since upgrading to 4.7 several months ago on the desktop machine, and for at least 4 weeks (since the upgrade from 10.10) on the laptop. (i.e. it isn't a hardware problem.) This crash is not leaving any logs that I can find, and i haven't the faintest idea how to generate a debug trace for this crash - particularly since I'm using kill -9 to kill the offending process. [Bug 827815] [NEW] Can't log into KDE, with error: Could not start D-bus, can you call qdbus?
Public bug reported: I suspect this has to do with libqt4-dbus, which was just upgraded this evening. I'm running Kubutu Oneiric, with all of the latest packages. I currently have 4:4.7.3-4ubuntu5 installed. What I expected: After entering my password to the KDM greeter, KDE would start up. What happns: After entering my password, I get a box saying "Could not start D-bus, can you call qdbus?", with an "ok" button, and upon clicking ok, I'm sent back to the greeter. Trying to launch qdbus from the command line gives the error that qdbus is not currently installed, but that I should install libqt4-dbus, however, trying to install libqt4-dbus from the command line (sudo apt- get install libqt4-dbus) gives the message that it is already the newest version. I've tried the trick of moving the .kde to .kde_old, but that doesn't help. I've tried dpkg-reconfigure libqt4-dbus Neither helps. [Bug 623547] Re: wrong default value for CODESET in /etc/default/console-setup
I just installed ubuntu-10.04.2-alternate-i386.iso in VirtualBox. I selected English as my language. I selected Europe/Hungary as my location. I selected the Hungarian/Hungarian keyboard layout. After install, I switched to the console, and instead of ő and ű, I saw diamond-shaped characters. /etc/default/locale contains LANG="en_US.UTF-8". /etc/default/console-setup contains CODESET="Lat15". The only thing I want in English is the language of the operating system, everything else (location, number formats, keyboard layout, accented characters, so the locale stuff) I want in Hungarian. So the only place I selected English in the installer is the language, every other place I chose Hungarian. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/623547 Title: wrong default value for CODESET in /etc/default/console-setup -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thanks Benjamin - I very much appreciate that you took the time to reply. Just so I'm clear on what's going on, following the link you provided, it seems that eclipse 3.5.2-5 is waiting to build for AMD64 because it is dependent on the libhamcrest-java library (>= 1.1-8~). However, from the libhamcrest-java page ( https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source /libhamcrest-java/1.1-8 ), it appears that the libhamcrest-java package (which you uploaded the current version two days ago) will only ever be built for the i386 architecture. [Bug 608816] [NEW] cursor moves in small jumps about once every 1/2 second on 10.10 alpha 2
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: synergy I just upgraded to Kubuntu 10.10 alpha 2, and was surprised to discover that sharing the cursor is no longer "smooth" between the two computers. The "server" is running Kubuntu 10.04, the "client" is a laptop running 10.10a2. When both the server and the client were running 10.04, the cursor moved smoothly (except while the wall paper was changing on the server, which just caused the shared cursor to freeze momentarily), and reacted appropriately. However, now that I have upgraded to 10.10 on the client, it has become unusable, as the cursor moves from position to position in small jumps, about once every half second. The network connection hasn't changed, so I doubt this is related to a network issue, although it may be possible that there is a network problem with Kubuntu 10.10. Just a quick update - There was corruption on one of the hard drives, which was fixed by running a fsck from an old 8.10 server boot disk. It turned out that it wasn't getting stuck at 90%, but rather that it was restarting repeatedly at 90% after a long pause. At any rate, that part is no longer a problem. [Bug 559761] Re: mountall hangs when fsck is run
I'm seeing a variation on this, with significant similarities - I'll try the method above. In my case, Plymouth comes up, and tells me that it will check all the disks, but then halts at 90% or 8% (depending on whether it checks one or both of the disks). It provides the option of pressing C to cancel the check, but does not respond if C is pressed (shift + c or just c). If I press escape, I get several screens full of "udevd[xxx]: SYSFS{}= will be removed in a future udev version, please use ATTR{}= to match the event device, or ATTRS= to match a parent device, in /etc/udev/rules.d/65-libmatp.rules:89" or variations upon that theme. Often I also get a "ureadahead-other main process terminated with status 4" message or two At end, it also drops several instances of the aforementioned "mountall: Plymouth command failed". At which point, the computer appears to hang, and no further progress is made towards booting. I tested other kernel versions, and I get roughly the same series of events. -- mountall hangs when fsck is run https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/559761 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 40189] Re: autofs needs to be restarted to pick up some shares
I am experiencing what I think is the same problem in 10.04. It wasn't a problem in any of the versions prior to this on the one machine, but an upgrade recently caused this to affect ~50% of cold boots. It's not difficult to solve - once the failed login happens (home is not mapped), I go to one of the terminals (crtl-alt-F1), and issue: sudo /etc/init.d/autofs reload After this, I can switch back to the KDE/Gnome prompt and login through the graphical prompt, which is now crtl-alt-F8. -- autofs needs to be restarted to pick up some shares https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/40189 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 522225] Re: permissions incorrect on libmysqlclient16_7.0.9-1_amd64.deb
I installed it last night and had some issues with the install not completing, but they seem unrelated, as I have been having similar issues with other upgrades lately as well. Though the advice not to install it may still be wise, it didn't wreck my computer. [Bug 522225] Re: permissions incorrect on libmysqlclient16_7.0.9-1_amd64.deb
24-hours later, this fix hasn't found it's way to a lot of mirrors, however, setting the source to ubuntu.mirrors.tds.net does seem to function as a viable workaround. Not sure why a simple permission problem is taking so long to fix, but good to have an alternate method to get updates. -- permissions incorrect on libmysqlclient16_7.0.9-1_amd64.deb https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/55 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 522225] [NEW] permissions incorrect on libmysqlclient16_7.0.9-1_amd64.deb
Public bug reported: It seems that the file libmysqlclient16_7.0.9-1_amd64.deb has the incorrect permissions assigned to it in the respository. Trying to download it gives an error. This is the result of "sudo apt- get upgrade": Err http://archive.ubuntu.com lucid/main libmysqlclient16 7.0.9-1 403 Forbidden [IP: 91.189.88.46 80] Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/m/mysql-cluster-7.0/libmysqlclient16_7.0.9-1_amd64.deb 403 Forbidden [IP: 91.189.88.46 80] E: Unable to fetch some archives, try running apt-get update or apt-get --fix-missing. I can confirm this problem - kubuntu-desktop was un-installed during the upgrade, and KDM launches to a black screen with a warning (cannot access file...), although GDM can be started and will launch Gnome without issues. -- python-kde4 uninstallable (broken deps on python-{qt,sip}4) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/517713 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
