[Bug 1091718] Re: 3.7 kernel and network manager do not play nicely in kubuntu raring

2013-11-23 Thread fejes
I tested out a daily build, and was unable to replicate the problem, so
I then upgraded my kernel to 3.11.0-13, and again did not see the
problem.

I think we can safely say that whatever the issue was, it is no longer
worth pursuing. Thanks for your help!

Thanks Christopher - and I apologize for my obviously poor reading

Anyhow, I will test on the daily build, and let you know what the
results are.

Thanks again,

[Bug 1091718] Re: 3.7 kernel and network manager do not play nicely in kubuntu raring

2013-11-20 Thread fejes
Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to make this switch to a mainline
kernel. Perhaps you can help me.

I'm using a macbook Pro, running Kubuntu 13.10, although still using
3.5.0-19. When I try to install 3.12

"sudo apt-get install linux-image-3.11.0-13-generic linux-
headers-3.11.0-13"

It installs, but throws the following errors:

run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/dkms 3.11.0-13-generic
/boot/vmlinuz-3.11.0-13-generic
ERROR (dkms apport): binary package for btusb: 1.0.6 not found

Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.11.0-13-generic (x86_64)

Unfortunately, nvidia_bl isn't available for raring yet - and I'm not
sure why btusb is a problem. However, I'm not sure how to proceed. If
you could give me advice - should I try this anyhow?

I've uninstalled the 3.11 kernels in the meantime.

[Bug 1091718] [NEW] 3.7 kernel and network manager do not play nicely in kubuntu raring

2012-12-18 Thread fejes
Public bug reported:

Sorry - Ubuntu-bug didn't give me suitable options, and clearly some of
the information it's reporting is just incorrect .

I upgraded kubuntu 12.10 to 13.04 last night, and observed the update-
initramfs bug
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kmod/+bug/1073062). Upon
restart, KDE loads, but NetworkManager takes 100% cpu, and fails to
allow wireless connections. (Changing the backend from NetworkManager to
Wicd does not help.)

However, if you restart and select the 3.5 kernel instead of 3.7 kernel,
the problem disappears completely.

I'm happy to help debug and provide further information if you can tell
me what it is that's needed.

[Bug 806255] Re: Unity/compiz intercepts keystrokes from grabbed windows.

2012-03-14 Thread fejes
I think this update has caused another bug - right clicking anywhere
when running compiz - 1:0.9.7.0+bzr3035-0ubuntu1 in kde 4.8.1 (running
latest updates in 12.04) causes the window decorations and panels to
disappear and the windows all become fixed on the desktop. I can't find
a log that shows anything crashing, but disabling compiz and using the
default kde window manager prevents this from occurring.

I also still have problems with showing up when setting
bindings in CCSM, and preventing the control key from being used, which
makes me wonder if there may be something more going on, or if the fix
described above might not work for everyone.

Please let me know if you need any more information, or if you'd prefer
that I start a new bug report.

[Bug 832426] Re: compiz crashed with SIGILL in CompWindow::destroy()

2012-03-11 Thread fejes
This bug is still around and has not yet been fixed.

Running Kubuntu with KDE results in panels option menus that can be
opened, but can not be closed. The panel effectively refuses to close
the "settings" menu, hiding a portion of the screen.

This may not still be the same bug, but I would appreciate someone
trying to confirm this, or helping me figure out of there is a bad
setting somewhere.

This has not been resolved by any of the recent compiz changes.

[Bug 867869] Re: brcmsmac wireless driver does not have power management enabled and is eating batteries

2011-12-29 Thread fejes
I haven't had any signal strength issues, so it might not be related.

I am aware that this driver still doesn't have the power saving modes
implemented, which just makes it insane that they've included it as the
default driver for this hardware.

I"m still suffering with it - but hope someone decides to take some
action to replace it with a more appropriate driver or gets around to
implementing power management for a release in the near future.

[Bug 760131] Re: Power consumption raised significantly in natty

2011-10-09 Thread fejes
Just to add a counterpoint, I've found that things are more or less
working well for me with the new kernel - it's definitely better then
the earlier versions. However, my biggest problem is the brcmsmac
driver being pushed out without power management, which appears to be
taking up to 5W (5W!) of power, and never less than (3.5W). I realize
it's an unrelated bug, (I've filed it here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/867869), but the
kernel is averaging 9-11W for the most part - which isn't too bad.

I just suspect power management has not been a priority for Oneiric.

[Bug 867869] [NEW] brcmsmac wireless driver does not have power management enabled and is eating batteries

2011-10-04 Thread fejes
Public bug reported:

A lot of people have been reporting that the oneiric kernels have been
sucking up power (which they were, early on), but a closer look shows
that the kernel regressions are mainly all fixed - however, the brcmsmac
wireless driver appears to be a main culprit left, sucking up to ~3W of
power.

As far as I can tell, the use of the brcmsmac wireless driver co-incided
with the use of the introduction of the kernel bug that was making
battery life poor for many oneiric users, and I suspect that this is one
of the major contributors to that problem. Perhaps the brcmsmac should
be rolled back until power management is available, or a push on this
driver could possibly enable this feature. Either one would be a good
way to extend battery life for laptop users.

I am using: Ubuntu 3.0.0-12.19-generic 3.0.4 (Oneiric, with up to date
packages)

@Stephen when in doubt, you can always use wget on the command line.
eg:

wget https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/oneiric/amd64/libcanberra-gtk-

[Bug 852061] Re: Compiz on Kubuntu Oneiric does not show panels

2011-09-23 Thread fejes
This problem is still present, however, if I switch back to compiz,
(compiz --replace), the panel remains, and I can continue using compiz
as before. However, further bugs now show up.

I can no longer close the panel settings dialog. Previously, attempting
to close the panel settings dialog would cause compiz to hang (taking
100% cpu), although that now seems to no longer be the case. Instead,
the panel settings dialognow remains open, and can not be hidden. (It is
also present on all desktops. Oddly enough, I can click on things
underneath (as the panel settings dialog is semi transparent... opening
and "closing" it multiple times just makes it less and less transparent,
although I can still click on things below, though I can no longer see
them)

[Bug 776824] Re: No panel and sidebar after enabling compiz cube

2011-09-20 Thread fejes
That does seem to be the case - turning off the cube and turning on the
wall plugin returns the panels, but, the wall plugin completely messes
up KDE - it no longer appears to be compatible.

My suspicion is that in modifying compiz for use with unity, the
developers have completely broken it's ability to work with KDE.

Can we change the package that this bug is attached to, and re-open it
as a "please fix compiz for kde?" request?

Is it possible that the same thing is happening in KDE? I'm no longer
getting panels, and I don't use the WALL plugin, but then again, I don't
use Unity either.

[Bug 852061] [NEW] Compiz on Kubuntu Oneiric does not show panels

2011-09-16 Thread fejes
Public bug reported:

After a recent update this week, the latest version of compiz appears to
prevent panels from showing up in KDE.

1) I am using Kubuntu Oneiric with all packages up to date.
2) The problem first occured in the past week, and is still present in compiz
1:0.9.5.94+bzr2803-0ubuntu5)
3) What I expect: When logging into Kubuntu, I should have the desktop appear,
windows should appear, and the panel(s) should appear. Compiz should start,
and I should be able to use compiz as I would use kwin, as a window manager.
4) What happens: when logging into Kubuntu, I see the desktop appear, I see a
few windows appear, but the panels never show up. Compiz starts, and I can
rotate the desktop cube, but I never have access to the menus or tools on the
panel.
5) workaround. I can can right click on the desktop, and select "run command",
then type in "kwin --replace". Immediately, my panels appear, and compiz is
turned off.

I still prefer to use compiz over kwin, so I would appreciate if anyone
could tell me why panels are being blocked by compiz - or if I need to
change a setting somewhere to make it work.

(KDE compatibility is turned on in CCSM, although the KDE/QT event loop
integration is turned off.)

[Bug 760131] Re: Power consumption raised significantly in natty

2011-09-01 Thread fejes
I should probably have mentioned that I'm running Oneric, not Natty,
although I'm not certain it's fixed - I just wanted to note that the
3.0.0.9 kernel seems to have made an improvement.

[Bug 760131] Re: Power consumption raised significantly in natty

2011-09-01 Thread fejes
Even if that were so, when my laptop goes into battery mode, with all of
the aggressive power saving modes throttling the CPU, etc, it's
unacceptable for it to be running so hot. I wouldn't normally care if
it's plugged in and sucking up power, but when the power is supposed to
be scaled back, it shouldn't be taking up more power ( even at the cost
of decreased responsiveness.)

In any case, as of yesterday, after a kernel update, my laptop is now
consuming 14-17W of power when on battery, as opposed to the 19-25W it
was taking last week. While not as good as the 11-14W range I had going
with Maverick, it's an improvement. I don't recall seeing anything in
the kernel changelog that would indicate a change to the power
consumption, but I'm not a kernel expert. In any case, I have not
altered any of my power saving optimizations between the two tests, and
I had used the force acpi trick much earlier on.

If it stays this way for now, that's not a bad sign.

[Bug 832426] [NEW] compiz crashed with SIGILL in CompWindow::destroy()

2011-08-23 Thread fejes
Public bug reported:

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using

I'm using Kubuntu Oneiric with all of the up to date packages.

2) Version:

compiz1:0.9.5.92+bzr2791-0ubuntu1
kdm 4:4.7.0-0ubuntu10

3) What I expected to happen:

Opening any panel in KDE, I expect to be able to {resize, move items,
open activities menu, etc} and then close the panel when I'm done.

4) What happens instead:

I am able to successfully open any panel, manipulate objects, but the
instant I try to close the panel (by clicking on the x or on the
desktop), all mouse movement halts, Compiz goes to 100% CPU (taking up
one CPU only) and the window environment siezes up. At which point, the
only option available to me is to drop to a terminal (ctrl + alt + F1)
to kill compiz (kill -9 only, all other levels appear to be ineffective
at killing the process) and restart kdm (sudo service kdm restart).

Compiz appears to recall any setting changes made to the panels upon
restart.

After killing compiz, I can return to KDE, but the environment is
effectively useless.

This is completely repeatable - and happens every time on both of my
computers.

5) Other useful information:
This happens on two separate computers, both of which were originally installed
using 10.10. I've tried moving the ~/.kde folder on one computer, but that
does not prevent the problem. (ie. it isn't a setting problem)

I am using the nvidia binaries (nvidia-current), but both computers use
completely different hardware (one is a macbook pro, the other is a
desktop PC using an AMD chip.) This appears to be software related, and
has been present since upgrading to 4.7 several months ago on the
desktop machine, and for at least 4 weeks (since the upgrade from 10.10)
on the laptop. (i.e. it isn't a hardware problem.)

This crash is not leaving any logs that I can find, and i haven't the
faintest idea how to generate a debug trace for this crash -
particularly since I'm using kill -9 to kill the offending process.

sent back to the greeter.

Trying to launch qdbus from the command line gives the error that qdbus
is not currently installed, but that I should install libqt4-dbus,
however, trying to install libqt4-dbus from the command line (sudo apt-
get install libqt4-dbus) gives the message that it is already the newest
version.

I've tried the trick of moving the .kde to .kde_old, but that doesn't help.
I've tried dpkg-reconfigure libqt4-dbus

Neither helps. I suspect something (eg, qdbus) was left out of
libqt4-dbus.

[Bug 773564] Re: compiz occasionally hangs with 100% cpu usage (inotify plugin infinite loop)

2011-07-09 Thread fejes
I notice this problem on my AMD64/Ubuntu11.11 computer, and it's
invariably connected to closing a window. Not sure if that helps, but
I'm happy to help debug this as I can.. I've had the issue for months,
now, and none of the changes have altered this behaviour. (I can
recreate this bug reasonably reliably, and so I've simply had to turn
off compiz.)

[Bug 714937] Re: GPU lockup (EQ overflow) with nouveau experimental 3D drivers

2011-06-02 Thread fejes
@Eric

No, this is happening on a desktop machine without a touch pad, although
it's possible that synapics drivers are being loaded at some point,
unintentionally. I'll take a look to see if that's the case next time
I'm on that computer. My workaround was to drop compiz, at which point
the problem seemed to go away. (It's a shame, however, because I won't
be able to upgrade any of my other computers until this bug has been
fixed.)

[Bug 623547] Re: wrong default value for CODESET in /etc/default/console-setup

2011-03-05 Thread Fejes Jozsef
I just installed ubuntu-10.04.2-alternate-i386.iso in VirtualBox. I
selected English as my language. I selected Europe/Hungary as my
location. I selected the Hungarian/Hungarian keyboard layout.

After install, I switched to the console, and instead of ő and ű, I saw
diamond-shaped characters. /etc/default/locale contains
LANG="en_US.UTF-8". /etc/default/console-setup contains CODESET="Lat15".

The only thing I want in English is the language of the operating
system, everything else (location, number formats, keyboard layout,
accented characters, so the locale stuff) I want in Hungarian. So the
only place I selected English in the installer is the language, every
other place I chose Hungarian.

[Bug 714937] Re: GPU lockup (EQ overflow) with nouveau experimental 3D drivers

2011-02-25 Thread fejes
Figure I may as well comment and say I'm seeing the same thing, with a
slight twist, since I'm using compiz as my window manager. In this
case, compiz takes 105% cpu (slightly more than one of the 2 cores), and
I can restart KDE by killing compiz and restarting it. Anyhow, given
the above, I'm not expecting motion on this bug, but if it is picked up
at some point, It might help to have a second report.

Thanks.

For me, the seg-fault was caused by not having installed the compiz-kde

[Bug 623542] Re: altgr doesn't work on a hungarian keyboard

2010-08-25 Thread Fejes Jozsef
Here's the solution. Both my Debian and Ubuntu were running in a
VirtualBox, I didn't mention that because altgr worked in Debian. Altgr
seems to be problematic in windows hosts because windows translates it
to two keys, but VirtualBox handles that well. Except yesterday when I
was looking at my VirtualBox through a Remote Desktop session, it didn't
handle it. My bad.

[Bug 623547] [NEW] wrong default value for CODESET in /etc/default/console-setup

I just installed an Ubuntu 10.04.1 from the alternative CD. I live in
Hungary, I have a Hungarian keyboard, this is what I selected in the

[Bug 623542] Re: altgr doesn't work on a hungarian keyboard

2010-08-24 Thread Fejes Jozsef
When I press the altgr key, it produces a Control_L which doesn't happen
on my Debian installation, only the ISO_Level3_Shift should be there. I
guess that the fact that asterisk works is just some random coincidence.
All other non-working altgr characters product some XLookupString value
in the range 1x. The keysim always shows the right key, like
bracketleft, bracketright, etc.

[Bug 623542] [NEW] altgr doesn't work on a hungarian keyboard

2010-08-24 Thread Fejes Jozsef
Public bug reported:

Newly installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 from the alternate CD. I have a generic
105 key keyboard with a standard Hungarian layout, that's what I
selected in the installer.

Normally I can type ~ \ | [ ] characters with altgr+1 q w f g
respectively, but in this OS I can't. Nothing appears, neither on the
console, nor in X. I can type some other altgr keys though, like * =
altgr+-, or Đ = altgr+d.

In system->preferences->keyboard, I only have the Hungary layout, and
the model is Generic 105-key (intl) PC. I'll attach some xev logs.

it seems that eclipse 3.5.2-5 is waiting to build for AMD64 because it
is dependent on the libhamcrest-java library (>= 1.1-8~). However, from
the libhamcrest-java page ( https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/libhamcrest-java/1.1-8 ), it appears that the libhamcrest-java package
(which you uploaded the current version two days ago) will only ever be
built for the i386 architecture.

That suggests to me that AMD64 users should just download eclipse from
the web and not wait for ubuntu's package. Is that the best way to
proceed, or have I completely misunderstood what's going on?

[Bug 608816] Re: cursor moves in small jumps about once every 1/2 second on 10.10 alpha 2

2010-07-23 Thread fejes
This appears to be a wireless network problem, as this issue disappears
if the wireless connection is replaced by a wired connection. As soon
as the wired connection is removed, and the connection reverts to
wireless, synergy becomes unusable again.

Not sure how to begin tracking down the source of the issue however.

[Bug 608816] [NEW] cursor moves in small jumps about once every 1/2 second on 10.10 alpha 2

2010-07-22 Thread fejes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synergy

I just upgraded to Kubuntu 10.10 alpha 2, and was surprised to discover
that sharing the cursor is no longer "smooth" between the two computers.
The "server" is running Kubuntu 10.04, the "client" is a laptop running
10.10a2.

When both the server and the client were running 10.04, the cursor moved
smoothly (except while the wall paper was changing on the server, which
just caused the shared cursor to freeze momentarily), and reacted
appropriately. However, now that I have upgraded to 10.10 on the
client, it has become unusable, as the cursor moves from position to
position in small jumps, about once every half second.

The network connection hasn't changed, so I doubt this is related to a
network issue, although it may be possible that there is a network
problem with Kubuntu 10.10.

The only relevant hardware I can think to report is the wireless :
(from lspci)
05:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01)

The client is a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop
The server is a Dell Optiplex 755

Thanks!

2010-06-14 Thread fejes
Just to comment on closing the issue - I reinstalled Kubuntu on my

suspect it has to do with successive upgrades over several ubuntu
versions, and so it is unlikely to arise again with current versions.

With much effort, I managed to track down a winXP computer, and tried to

[Bug 559761] Re: mountall needs to flush plymouth message queue before emitting upstart events

2010-04-21 Thread fejes
It happens to me at random times. A dialog box comes up which includes
the option "restart x" or something similar (always the last option.).
Selecting it always causes it to start correctly immediately. (I tried
the other options once, and it didn't help - just restarting it
apparently is the only correct solution.)

[Bug 559761] Re: mountall hangs when fsck is run

2010-04-13 Thread fejes
Perhaps this doesn't need to be here, but for completeness, I figured I
should include one final update, the /dev/sd* designations of my hard
drives began to be assigned inconsistently from one boot to the next,
causing similar but not identical mount errors. This was solved by
converting my /etc/fstab to use UUIDs instead of indicating the /dev/sd*
notation.

[Bug 559761] Re: mountall hangs when fsck is run

2010-04-12 Thread fejes
Just a quick update - There was corruption on one of the hard drives,
which was fixed by running a fsck from an old 8.10 server boot disk.
It turned out that it wasn't getting stuck at 90%, but rather that it
was restarting repeatedly at 90% after a long pause. At any rate, that
part is no longer a problem.

Most of my other problems seem to have been the result of my disk order
being changed. My SATA disk went from being /dev/hda to /dev/hdc, with
predictable consequences. Changing the /etc/fstab file designation of
all of my drives fixed the issue.

[Bug 559761] Re: mountall hangs when fsck is run

2010-04-10 Thread fejes
Hi Matthew, Thanks for the helpful comments - those are great
explanations for what I'm seeing.

Just to reply to a couple points:

> Normal, no fsck: 35 seconds
> File /forcefsck exists: 8 minutes

This morning, I left it for over an hour once it hit 90%, and no change
was visible.

> The presence or absence of a splash screen doesn't significantly alter
these times.

I often boot with nosplash, and you're correct, I don't see any
difference in behaviour with or without it.

> I don't see these messages, and grep fails to find the 'SYSFS' string
in either /etc/udev/rules.d/* or /lib/udev/rules.d/*

It's possible that this is something has failed to upgrade over several
different iterations of ubuntu. This particular computer has been
upgraded repeatedly since 2007, and may be due for a reinstall anyhow.
I alo found a bug report that seemed similar to this, so it may be
entirely unrelated, however I included it for completeness.

[Bug 559761] Re: mountall hangs when fsck is run

2010-04-10 Thread fejes
I'm seeing a variation on this, with significant similarities - I'll try
the method above.

In my case, Plymouth comes up, and tells me that it will check all the
disks, but then halts at 90% or 8% (depending on whether it checks one
or both of the disks). It provides the option of pressing C to cancel
the check, but does not respond if C is pressed (shift + c or just c).

If I press escape, I get several screens full of "udevd[xxx]: SYSFS{}=
will be removed in a future udev version, please use ATTR{}= to match
the event device, or ATTRS= to match a parent device, in
/etc/udev/rules.d/65-libmatp.rules:89" or variations upon that theme.

Often I also get a "ureadahead-other main process terminated with status
4" message or two

At end, it also drops several instances of the aforementioned "mountall:
Plymouth command failed".

At which point, the computer appears to hang, and no further progress is
made towards booting.

I tested other kernel versions, and I get roughly the same series of
events.

[Bug 40189] Re: autofs needs to be restarted to pick up some shares

2010-03-08 Thread fejes
I am experiencing what I think is the same problem in 10.04. It wasn't
a problem in any of the versions prior to this on the one machine, but
an upgrade recently caused this to affect ~50% of cold boots.

It's not difficult to solve - once the failed login happens (home is not
mapped), I go to one of the terminals (crtl-alt-F1), and issue:

sudo /etc/init.d/autofs reload

After this, I can switch back to the KDE/Gnome prompt and login through
the graphical prompt, which is now crtl-alt-F8.

24-hours later, this fix hasn't found it's way to a lot of mirrors,
however, setting the source to ubuntu.mirrors.tds.net does seem to

good to have an alternate method to get updates.

[Bug 522225] [NEW] permissions incorrect on libmysqlclient16_7.0.9-1_amd64.deb

2010-02-15 Thread fejes
Public bug reported:

It seems that the file libmysqlclient16_7.0.9-1_amd64.deb has the incorrect
permissions assigned to it in the respository.

Trying to download it gives an error. This is the result of "sudo apt-
get upgrade":

Err http://archive.ubuntu.com lucid/main libmysqlclient16 7.0.9-1
  403 Forbidden [IP: 91.189.88.46 80]

 403 Forbidden [IP: 91.189.88.46 80]
E: Unable to fetch some archives, try running apt-get update or apt-get
--fix-missing.

Not a big deal, it just halts the upgrade. Running "sudo apt-get --fix-
missing" does absolutely nothing. (Gives a list of apt-get commands.)

Answers to questions suggested below:
1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System ->

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
packagename' or by checking in Synaptic.

not relevant.

3) What you expected to happen

I expected the file to be downloaded.

4) What happened instead

File was not downloaded, and an error appeared.
