[Bug 1008197] Re: Cinnamon desktop freeze - no mouse actions, keyboard atl, ctrl, del works

2014-03-05 Thread fig_wright
I am 90% sure my problem on this is caused by the SSD drive and the JBD2
journalising process. If I happen to have top or iostat running when
everything freezes I can see that top is showing lots of "wa" (io wait)
and iostat is showing the JBD2 process at work. It might be due to a
Trim bug of some kind. I have witnessed this on kernels 3.2, 3.8 and
3.11.

Confirm this bug still in effect, 9 months later.

Workaround: Install Ubuntu Tweak, and us the "File type manager" to add
an association between x-fig mime types and xfig or matlab, or whatever
you want to open them with.

@Deepak when it crashes, the screen flickers, the windows disappear and
you either see a black screen or the background (I cant remember), then
as the shell respawns after a second or two the windows reappear and the
window borders appear quickly around them.

[Bug 889706] Re: Gnome-shell randomly crashes

2012-02-25 Thread fig_wright
As a workaround when the shell wont restart after a crash, and leaves
your windows dead and unfocussed, go to Terminal and File->New profile
create a profile called "Restart shell" and create. In the properties
choose "Run a custom command instead of my shell" and enter the command
"gnome-shell --replace". Now if the shell crashes and you cant get the
text focus to a terminal to type this manually, you can right-click on
the Desktop and "Open in terminal"; then from the Terminal File menu,
select File->Open Tab->Restart Shell.

OK so I've added the ppa and updated (which installed/upgraded about a
hundred packages!) and I've had one shell crash (recovered OK) only in
the last 45 mins, which is very much more stable than it was. I would go
so far as to say it's now usable, but will report back in a day to see
if it stays like this. Fingers crossed...

@estimablesir - Thanks for this update. That's a shame it's not fully
stable When you say it is "less frequent" do you mean crashes have gone
from every 5 mins to every 10 mins, or do you mean to once every few
hours?

@Keith Drummond - Your fix method doesnt make sense! You added
ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3 and upgraded. Then you removed the same ppa and
downgraded. Everything should be exactly as it was before, but it works
fine you say?

[Bug 896647] Re: Ubuntu Boot halts if a windows partition is hibernated

2011-12-11 Thread fig_wright
Thanks for the 'nobootwait' option, I'll put that in for future.

Although you say mountall doesn't know "this is an optional filesystem
that should be ignored if it can't be mounted", clearly some part of the
process chain does know this because the system knows it has halted
because there is a hibernation file on the partition (hence the message,
if you can see it). This information could be passed to mountall and
used to pass judgement. A partition with a windows hibernation file on
is going to be ntfs and is not going to be "this is a critical
filesystem that we can't boot without".

I have spotted elsewhere: "But it is dangerous to write to the partition
of hibernated OS, because some of the FS tables are still in memory
(well, in hibernation file but not in the FS), applications still have
handles to some files and generally file system state is kind of
unstable." Worst case scenario the offending filesystem could just be
mounted read-only...

[Bug 896647] Re: Ubuntu Boot halts if a windows partition is hibernated

2011-11-28 Thread fig_wright
The message during boot (if you are lucky enough to see it) is:

-
Windows is hibernated, refused to mount
 NTFS partition is hibernated {blah, blah}

 {several lines of more blah about mounting hibernated partitions}

An error occurred while mounting /media/winxp
press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery
-

Pressing 's' (*and then return* - which incidentally is not specified in
the message) continues with normal boot with no adverse consequences
except that the NTFS partition is not mounted.

There is no serious reason why 's' couldn't default after 60 seconds. If
Ubuntu is serious about winning over windows users, then functioning
properly in dual-boot situations is a *MUST* work scenario. Failing to
boot Ubuntu because windows is hibernated on another partition somewhere
is a show-stopper.

[Bug 896647] [NEW] Ubuntu Boot halts if a windows partition is hibernated

2011-11-26 Thread fig_wright
Public bug reported:

When booting Ubuntu 11.04, if there is an NTFS partition in the
/etc/fstab file set to automount during boot, and if there is a
hibernated windows system on that partition... then the boot will halt
permanently, waiting for user input to a question about proceeding.

Why is this a bug? It is a bug because so many users now do not have
functioning visuals during boot due to the complexities of Plymouth - in
one way or another many users have blank or unresponsive screens during
boot - until the GDM screen comes up. These users will not be able to
see the prompt for their input to resolve an issue that does not
actually need any input to resolve. Any user in this situation will have
an essentially dead system that will not boot - they they do not know
that a simple key-press can save their system.

At the very least the prompt should have a 60 second time-out so that if
there is no user input (for example if the user cant see the text and
therefore does not know that input is being expected) then the default
choice should be made. This will allow the PC to boot to a usable state,
which the user may be able to find out the problem from.

In the event of a hibernated system on a peripheral NTFS partition, then
the default action should be simply to not bother mounting the
partition. The user will discover soon enough that the partition is
missing and that something it up with it (it has a hibernated system on
it) - there is no need to halt the boot for an issue like this.

I have this since upgrade to 10.10 today. I get 2 lines in syslog, and
it flashes up annoyingly during boot, corrupting the boot splash screen:

shpchp :00:01.0: Cannot reserve MMIO region
shpchp :00:10.0: Cannot reserve MMIO region

Those are PCI device codes:

00:01.0 PCI bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-760 MP [IGD4-2P] AGP
Bridge (prog-if 00 [Normal decode])
00:10.0 PCI bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-768 [Opus] PCI (rev 05)

Perhaps something to do with graphics driver? I have a PCI (yes, PCI!)

2009-07-19 Thread fig_wright
The fact that this sorry argument has been going on is good evidence
that the Linux community still doesnt fully "get it". Users dont expect
to have to create their own templates and put them in the right place.
They just expect them *to be there*. It's really not a big dealt to have
~15 or so templates in the menu. Amazingly, people can chose from 15
objects quite easily.

Oh, by the way, dropping templates into the ~Templates directory doesnt
actually do anything for me. I guess something's broken somewhere, but I
really dont care enough to try and fix it today...

[Bug 226878] Re: [MASTER] Firefox freezes often

2009-07-16 Thread fig_wright
Since upgrading from Ubuntu 8.04 to 9.04 this seems to have cleared up
for me, still with FF 3.0.11. :-)

[Bug 288185] Re: Evolution plain-text email includes formatting "stuff" - should be pure plain text

2009-07-05 Thread fig_wright
I've had this problem since I started using Ubuntu a couple of years
ago. It's annoyed me ever since. How can we get these silly formatting
"boxes" with dotted lines around them to just go away?

When I create a new email, I already have one of these little boxes
covering the first line. This prevents the pasting of text into the
email until I delete the formatting box.

Also, when I paste certain things into an email, they appear inside one
of these boxes, and then cant be broken up and reformatted...

Where is the "No, when I said NO FORMATTING, I really, honestly,
truthfully, meant what I just damned well said" option?

[Bug 237002] Re: Evolution cursor creates a track.

2009-03-05 Thread fig_wright
I confirm this problem with 8.04 and previously with Gutsy also. I have
Nvidia card and Compiz enabled. Presumably the reason 8.10 clears this
problem is precisely because there is no Nvidia driver?

[Bug 226878] Re: Firefox freezes often

2009-03-02 Thread fig_wright
I am also having this problem. There is no pattern I can see to the URLs
that cause the greying out of firefox. But it seems to be getting worse
with later versions.

I am using Ubuntu 8.04 and Firefox 3.0.6. Using the same version of
firefox in Windows XP doesnt have this problem.

Seems to be the same as this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/172419

that gatopeich's fixed /etc/init.d/powernowd file appears to have fixed
it.

I'm still getting this too. Files below. The AMD760 chipset is about 7
years old now, so people will be probably upgrading from these relative
old dual-cpu machines - although I love mine and wont need to upgrade
for several years more!

[Bug 110073] Re: Evolution-exchange uses 100% CPU

2008-06-20 Thread fig_wright
This may be because Evolution is attempting to connect to LDAP servers
or remote addressbooks/contacts, especially if you use a VPN to connect
to mail. I notice that if I dont have my VPN open (i.e. I am using only
my local mail) then cpu goes to 100%.

[Bug 156365] Re: Upgrade to pstoedit 3.45

2008-03-24 Thread fig_wright
I can confirm that I too had this bug, and that it was fixed by Devin
Kennedy's packages. However, I did get into a little dependency hell
with Devin's files - I had to install about 20 further packages of about
60MB in order to calm the dependencies, but I was happy to do that to
get the app working...

[Bug 156365] Re: Upgrade to pstoedit 3.45

2008-03-24 Thread fig_wright
By the way, there is a small bug in svg output of pstoedit 3.45 and I
cant see easily who to email about it. There doesnt appear to be any
contact info at the website http://www.helga-
glunz.homepage.t-online.de/pstoedit/index.htm

The bug is that on conversion the new files have missing spaces in front of
some keywords. This is generally:
"stroke-dashoffset

which needs to be changed to:
" stroke-dashoffset

but also I had one occurrence of:
"fill

which needed to be changed to:
" fill

The editing can be don in any editor. Firefox is good for telling you
where the parse error is.

[Bug 129910] Re: Blank ttys when using vesafb (vga=xxx)

2008-03-03 Thread fig_wright
I have totally blank consoles (tty 1-6). My boot screen works OK. I do
need the consoles in cases of rare crashes. I have tried all the
possible solutions here with no success.

I have tried editing in /etc/modules and /etc/initramfs-tools/modules
and /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer the modules fbcon and all of
vesafb nvidiafb vga16fb by themselves and sometimes with each other.
None have ever produced anything other than a blank tty screen.

My Kit:
GeForce3 Ti 200 with latest restricted drivers
LCD DVI flat panel 1280x1024
