[Bug 1451087] Re: gvfsd-fuse does not create mount point

2017-03-08 Thread Firebird
Sorry, but it seems that adding the user to the fuse group is not
necessary. Just killing gvfs, nautilus -q and restart it does the trick.

[Bug 1451087] Re: gvfsd-fuse does not create mount point

2017-03-08 Thread Firebird
Had this issue since a recent update. I'm using a 16.04. All worked
fine, and after an update the /run/user//gvfs stayed empty. I added
my user to fuse group, killed gvfs and restarted nautilus, and it
worked.

2011-05-03 Thread firebird
as soon as you try to determine what layout you have by typing something
or my clicking into the country pane and hitting the g-key for
example in order to have it scroll to germany it DOES scroll to
germany but after that you can sit and watch until ubiquity shows ready
when you are but you will neither ever see your layout, nor a forward
button...

I hope that was of help!

[Bug 758843] Re: default printer is being overridden by cups server's published printer-list

2011-04-18 Thread firebird
Hi Till!

Thank you for your explanation, but I am afraid that I am not quite
happy with you setting this thread to invalid, reason:

IF I set a standard printer manually in ubuntu's printer dialog
shouldn't it BE the standard printer then?

I mean regardless of it being only personally or system wide?

What sort of strange STANDARD PRINTER is that, that I cannot set system
wide?? and that is not a STANDARD PRINTER then at all??

And what for do I need a functionality to set a standard printer if it
isn't being considered anyways?

[Bug 758843] [NEW] default printer is being overridden by cups server's published printer-list

2011-04-12 Thread firebird
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

Hi guys!

We have a CUPS server that publishes a printer-list every 5 minutes or so.
I have configured one printer on my floor as default in Ubuntu's
System/Administration/Printers dialog, but this setting is being completely
ignored.
I need to manually lpoptions -d floor1 in order to have a .cups directory
created in ~ an then a loptions file within it.
After that it really works!
(Without that I do print per default to a 30Miles remote office, which is of
course not so useful...)

According to my colleague this used to work UNTIL 10.4!

Now they want me to install WINDOWSon those devices, so can anybody please take
notice?
As it worked already it cannot be too hard a fix, right?

[Bug 675475] [NEW] display resolution for external monitor cannot be set to anything higher than 640x480

2010-11-15 Thread firebird
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Hi guys!

I have a Fujitsu E8460 Laptop infront of me with an Nvidia graphics card.
If I try to switch to an attached beamer by pressing Fn+F10 I do get a picture
on the beamer except it is completely blown out of proportion.
Apparently I do have a 1360x768 resolution in a 640x480 pane, meaning that i
have to scroll the picture arround in this pane.
Within nvidia-settings in the menu item x-server display configuration I can
set the resolution for the external monitor to 480x320 or 640x480 or auto or
off. that is it. And in Panning I can put whatever I want...

Also the driver does not recognize the externeal device at all, as it is being
called CRT0, it is a Panasonic PT-LB55NTE Beamer.
I guess this is why I don't get to see any other resolutions?

How can I circumvent this? For example by setting the values' range
manually?

We would be very grateful if you could look into this as soon as
possible as we are talking about a productive device here that is being
required urgently!

Thanks in advance and your's,

[Bug 671332] Re: changing pwd strength criteria in /etc/pam.d/common.password takes no effect at all

2010-11-15 Thread firebird
Dear Steve!

I am afraid I overlooked the 'obsure' completely...
It really did the trick!
PLEASE accept my apologies for having caused this fuzz completely needlessly...
BUT - to my defence - the documentation and help pages on the net really
confused me (remember the maxlen= switch? I meanwhile found that one in
/etc/login.defs...)
AND still, the max= option seems to be completely ignored when obscured is
set... not useful to set these two in combination...
Please feel free to set the thread to RTFM more carefully or anything alike
now!
Thanks once more!

[Bug 671332] Re: changing pwd strength criteria in /etc/pam.d/common.password takes no effect at all

2010-11-11 Thread firebird
Hi Steve!

Well... I can even attempt to set a six character or eight charakter
password, it won't accept it.

It did not accept it BEFORE I MANUALLY installed libpam-cracklib, which was NOT
installed per default.
If i set the min= Parameter to for example 4 I still cannot enter a six digit
password.
And after all not only the length is being checked as it appears but also what
charakters it contains.
On ceretain occasions I get things like 'password strength is weak' and so it
won't set the password.

But as far as I can see that does not come from pamlib-cracklib as I installed
that manually after some googling in the hope that I could influence the
password criteria then.
Currently libpam-cracklib is NOT set in /etc/pam.d/common-password and it still
completely ignores the min=4 parameter!

Greetings!

[Bug 671332] Re: changing pwd strength criteria in /etc/pam.d/common.password takes no effect at all

2010-11-09 Thread firebird
Dear Steve!

Ok, first of all thanks alot for your thoroughness, I really appreciate
that!

There are manpages for each of the modules, which document their options.
I am well aware of that but man pam_unix for example does explain the min=
switch but max= or maxlen= switches are not even being mentioned in there...
I would therefore be very grateful if you could point me the way to a complete
documentation...?

Further if this is a lapse of the pen so to speak, how in the world do I
really turn off the complexity chek?
That after all was my initial issue?

Thanks and your's, firebug

[Bug 671332] Re: changing pwd strength criteria in /etc/pam.d/common.password takes no effect at all

2010-11-08 Thread firebird
Dear Steve!

I know, it is hard to get a proper documentation on the paramters in
/etc/pam.d/common-password, but according to what I found, for example
here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/serverguide/C/user-management.html

the max= switch should do EAXACTLY what I described above, and what you
described should be accomplished by the maxlen= parameter.

I therefore kindly ask you to get your facts straight and to reopen the
prematurely dismissed thread.

[Bug 671332] [NEW] changing pwd strength criteria in /etc/pam.d/common.password takes no effect at all

2010-11-05 Thread firebird
Public bug reported:

I have tried to set the required value in /etc/pam.d/common-password to
max=4 that one should disable complexity check for passwords longer then 4
digits but it doesn't... ?

(Just so I dont have to explain it all again; we have a net/notebook pool, free
to take away as required, those are named after a policy and their password is
for all of them dot dot name of device, so a four letter device name produces a
six letter password.
As described theres devices contain nothing secret, they are not mission
critical, etc.).

2010-09-14 Thread firebird
excuse me chuck but why would this be invalid?
do you consider postfix to behave properly if it just crashes over a non
existing /etc/aliases?

I am just saying that it requires about one line of code to fix this, something
like if [! test -f /etc/aliases]; touch /etc/aliases; ... (or so i am not
familiar with bash scripting...)?

2010-09-13 Thread firebird
Hi Clint!

Nope, none of the above, /etc has completely normal acces/ownership
attributes and no hardening, no SELinux or what so ever.

Bad thing is I have been tinkering around so much meanwhile that i don't recall
with 100% certainty if it was due to the file not existing at the time...
If i recall this correctly after purging sendmail /etc/aliases and
/etc/aliases.db were gone, and after touching it manually and reinstalling
postfix it worked.

I hope that gets you further?

[Bug 383084] Re: autofs doesn't start on boottime and ghost option is being ingnored on HP machines

2010-03-19 Thread firebird
Dear Chuck!

Here's what i can do for you:
As mentioned above i put a line /etc/init.d/autofs start into /etc/rc.local
but this did not work anymore since some updates last week, so I put a echo
'ifconfig` /tmp/bla.txt infront of that line and i saw from that that the
ethernet interface did not have an ip-address at that time, of course the ldap
communication then does not work so good...
As I haven't concerned myself with upstart yet I cannot tell how to solve this
properly, however I have a quick and dirty solution to this, I put the
following line into /etc/rc.local;

(while [ ! -f /var/run/autofs/_home.pid ]; do /etc/init.d/autofs start;
sleep 10; done)

As you can see this while-loop tests if the pid-file for autofs exists and if
not it keeps trying to start it in 10 seconds steps.
This does work but a proper solution would of course be preferable, so I hope
you can get this upstart messup fixed somehow...:)

2010-03-12 Thread firebird
Dear Chuck!

As I am still interested in finding a solution to this I would very much like
to help you in solving this, but unfortunately I cannot quite understand how I
am supposed to reproduce he failure with a live cd as the malfunction occurs
during startup and I seriously don't want to engineer a live cd in order to
execute autofs and ldap commands during startup...
As described above there is no problem if you do it manually after startup...
Any suggestions on that?

2009-11-03 Thread firebird
Ok guys, here's the deal:

Not only GDM is not starting but also TTY1-TTY7 are being terminated, and that
before GDM is attempted to be started.
Of course GDM cannot start if there is no TTY available.
Further this problem occurs only with kernel 2.6.31-14
kernel 2.6.28-15 boots perfectly!

Btw. this problem does not occur on our 8 Fujitsu Siemens Workstations
but only on HP Workstations...

Have phun debugging this!*g*

[Bug 441638] Re: upstart job keeps restarting a dying gdm

2009-11-03 Thread firebird
Ladies and gentlemen here comes the solution:

I realized by connecting to the machine via ssh that actually everything is
running, ie. GDM, X, Pulse, whatever you just don't get to see anything which
is due to a completely out of range resolution of horizontal 268kHz, vertical
281Hz.
I have now completely emptied /etc/X11/xorg.conf and voila, it works!

just as if nothing happened, all TTYs are back online, graphics are just fine,
no init: gdm main process ended, respawning
error messages anymore!

[Bug 383084] Re: autofs doesn't start on boottime and ghost option is being ingnored on HP machines

2009-10-16 Thread firebird
Hi Chuck!

All of these machines run Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 and are configured to
use dhcp ips where the lease is configured to never expire and the machines
also have a reserved ip, meaning always the same one.
So from a technical point of view it is dhcp but practically the ips are
static...

@ghost option, basically yes, but you believe that the ghost problem
won't go away when the autofs problem is fixed?

thanks and your's, firebug

This problem still persists, and as far as i understand now after some

It'd be really nice if someone could take notice pls, as said before i
am willing to provide what ever information you guys require or to run

@David Siegel not true, as said you only need to add one single
parameter in the config file in order to have this working and the
graphical interface is there already, so if i am not completely mistaken
this should not require much more code lines then an if/else statement;)

[Bug 383084] [NEW] autofs doesn't start on boottime and ghost option is being ingnored on HP machines

2009-06-03 Thread firebird
Public bug reported:

hi folks!

I have the problem that autofs just doesn't start during system startup.
There is no what so ever error message in none of the logs and I can start it
without any problems with /etc/init.d/autofs start.
Autofs has a link in /etc/rc[0-6|S].d, I have tried to put those entries to way
higher values than ldap and networking but to no effect.

This problem ONLY occurs on Hewlett Packard machines, i.e dx2400 and dc7900.
Our Fuji-Siemens Workstations f.ex. have exactly the same setup and there it
works just fine.

Further (also only on the HP machines) the ghost option is completely being
ignored; as far as i understand this option the folders that are supposed to be
mounted should be shown but only mounted on access.
They do NOT show, but they are there, including content if you access them f.ex
with ls -l /backup/office, but ONLY if you use the full path. ls -l /backup
returns total 0

Please let me know what further information you want me to provide in
order to be able to solve this!

Thanks in advance, your's faithfully,
firebug

[Bug 347788] Re: OpenVPN client does not recognize WLAN connections

2009-03-25 Thread firebird
ok, i am starting to understand, what you meant by more information on the
configuration:
i have defined the LAN connection during installation of intrepid, and of
course i can see it in network-manager as eth0.
checkbox system setting is enabled there.

the vpn is not configured in network-manager as i am using pkcs12 (ie. *.p12)
certificates which are currently not supported by network-manager.
the vpn is not being established automatically during system startup, but i
have installed openvpngui, which is a very simple to use taskbar applet that
uses the config files in /etc/openvpn and that allows to select between several
different configs.
this implies that all routes should practically be there, as i of course gnome
needs to be running in order to use openvpngui.

btw. the wireless connection is also not being started automatically during
system startup, but i connect manually through the network-manager taskbar
applet.
the reason for this is that i run from one institute to another and all of
those of course have differen networks...

please see the attachment for information on the daemon.log

err yes, as far as i can see with tail -f on /var/log/daemon.log nothing is
being inserted there if i start the vpn via openvpngui, so heres another log
from the openvpn output window.
i believe these two lines to be the interesting ones:

Wed Mar 25 10:17:01 2009 TLS Error: TLS key negotiation failed to occur within
60 seconds (check your network connectivity)

[Bug 347788] [NEW] OpenVPN client does not recognize WLAN connections

2009-03-24 Thread firebird
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openvpn

Hi folks!
This seems to be a common sight according to several threads i found on google,
and btw. since several Ubuntu versions:
OpenVPN client connects perfectly as long as there is a cable attached to the
computer.
If you try to use the WLAN connection that doesn't work.
According to OpenVPN's documentation the operation system should take care of
the selection of connections,
and basically this works for almost every application, like for example Firefox.
Unfortunately it doesn't for OpenVPN.
Please fix this as soon as you can as it is really crucial for road warriors...
Thanks!

[Bug 299900] Re: nm-connection-editor throws tons of errors

2009-02-16 Thread firebird
Dear Dan!

First of all thanks for the attempt to give useful information, unfortunately
this did not help me much...
my main problem is not actually a missing nm-applet, but much more the
inability to edit connection settings in system/preferences/network

this problem persists and we are talking about intrepid.
just once more to be on the save side: it does NOT occur on freshly installed
systems but ONLY on systems that have been upgraded from hardy to intrepid.

but there it occurs on every single machine (of very different
architectures)...

thanks for your attention, your's
firebird

[Bug 299900] [NEW] nm-connection-editor throws tons of errors

2008-11-19 Thread firebird
Public bug reported:

Hi all!
I have upgraded from hardy to intrepid, i saw there that the old network-admin
has been replaced by nm-connection-editor, which obviously has some serious
flaws:
first of all i get no network applet in the menu bar so i cannot pick a network
there allthough iwlist scan shows them.
so i have to MANUALLY add a wifi connection in nm-connection-editor, after that
i have the applet and in it i see all of the surrounding nets.
but then all of a sudden i can ONLY connect with the wifi connection as all of
a sudden the wired connection does not recognize any nameservers anymore unless
i MANUALLY add them to a completely empty /etc/resolv.conf.
i have to directly add them to /etc/resolv.conf as i get an error in
nm-connection-editor when attempting to add a second nameserver that it is
being executed read only.
and there is no unlock button anywhere in sight as in network-admin.
my wired connection has static settings and wifi is dhcp.

further if i execute nm-connection-editor from a shell with sudo (i was
hoping to so circumvent the read only problem) i see the following
errors in the shell:

** (nm-connection-editor:17762): WARNING **: No connections defined

(nm-connection-editor:17762): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkSpinButton: setting an
adjustment with non-zero page size is deprecated

and when trying to edit the namesservers in the nm-connection-editor i
get this for every single character that i type:

** (nm-connection-editor:17762): WARNING **: Invalid setting IPv4
Settings

and then after clicking ok comes a error message window stating:
updating connection failed: nm-ifupdown-connection.c.82 - updating connection
not supported (read only)

i consider this to be major bugs so please be so kind and fix this asap!

thanlks in advance!
