[Bug 1905775] Re: Uninstalling python3-apporrt should not uninstall xorg packages

2020-12-01 Thread flux242
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1899971 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1899971

well, based on the reply from Timo Aaltonen it seems like there's canonical
politics involved
so, i purged python3-apport and reinstalled only 2 packages:
sudo apt install xserver-xorg-core xserver-xorg-input-libinput

x11-apps x11-session-utils xinput xinit x11-apps could be installed
extra

i've just checked debian xorg package dependencies and no it doesn't
depend on that problem reporting.

[Bug 1905775] Re: Uninstalling python3-apporrt should not uninstall xorg packages

2020-12-01 Thread flux242
no, it is an issue because packages are marked for automatic removal:
x11-apps x11-session-utils xinit xinput xserver-common xserver-xorg-core
xserver-xorg-input-all xserver-xorg-input-libinput

So you suggest to install all those packages extra afterwards instead of
simply getting dependencies sorted out in the first place?

so, I still think that xorg should not depend on apport - it simply
doesn't belong.

[Bug 1905775] Re: Uninstalling python3-apporrt should not uninstall xorg packages

2020-12-01 Thread flux242
ah, it's the other way around with dependencies. So, apparently xorg
should not depend on problem reporting. I think the only reason they put
this dependency there is because otherwise they would have to add it to
every -desktop task.

And no, I want to purge all packages related to apport, not only disable
it.

Thanks, Brian

[Bug 1624317] Re: systemd-resolved breaks VPN with split-horizon DNS

2017-12-29 Thread flux242
I'm not sure if setting negative priority really solves the dns leaks problem
because I'm on 17.10 and I do have dns leaks. If I'm connected to my ISP over a
LTE network and the connection is unstable then it could happen that DNS
queries will be sent over my ISP network and not over my VPN connection. The
only solution that works for me currently is
sudo systemctl disable systemd-resolved.service
sudo service systemd-resolved stop

Put the following line in the [main] section of your
/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf:
dns=default

Delete the symlink /etc/resolv.conf
rm /etc/resolv.conf

Restart network-manager
sudo service network-manager restart

Caution! Be aware that disabling systemd-resolvd might break name
resolution in VPN for some users - according to the original thread

in-ubuntu

[Bug 1688710] [NEW] [17.04] netcat interface change breaks old scripts

2017-05-06 Thread flux242
Public bug reported:

the netcat version in the 17.04 does not work as before any longer.
Previously it would exit upon receiving input stream EOF and now it
doesn't. The one who made the change - do you realize how many old
scripts needs to be patched now? If there were a problem with the old
behaviour why didn't you add a switch to solve this particular problem
keeping the old interface intact, huh?

Now to restore the old behaviour one would need to add -q0 so that nc
exit immediately upon receiving EOF.

Affected nc version:
OpenBSD netcat (Debian patchlevel 1.130-3)

2017-05-05 Thread flux242
what are the intentions?

systemd power management huh? Which of these problems has already been
solved since 15.10 then:

1. System doesn't react on the power supply plugged/unplugged events
2. Lid close events are handled by the systemd by default and not by the
xfce4-power-manager
3. System doesn't execute pm-utils hooks on sleep/resume events, i.e when the
power cord is unplugged all powertop's tunable should be in GOOD state. Are
they?

[Bug 1685193] [NEW] [17.04] systemd-udevd. Scripts started by a rule won't write to /var/log

2017-04-21 Thread flux242
Public bug reported:

this is rather weird problem but after upgrading to the 17.04 the pm-
powersave script I start by a udev rule stopped working. After debuggin
a bit I found a place that causes the error. In the /usr/lib/pm-utils
/pm-functions there's the init_logfile function that called exec to
redirect script's output to the /var/log/pm-powersave.log. And it fails
to do so because root (under which the script is started) has no
permission to write to anything under the /var/log/

Inside of that functions I added additional logging to prove that
1. the script is started under root
2. the file /var/log/pm-powersave.log exist and it has 644 permissions
3. the root can read from /var/log/*
4. /var permissions are 755, /var/log permissions are 775

If the script is started with 'sudo /usr/sbin/pm-powersave true' then it
works!

So what could this be? Could the apparmor prevent udevd to write to
/var/log ?

Temporary solution is to write to /tmp/pm-powersave.log

How to reproduce:
1. add the following rule to /etc/udev/rules.d/test.rules
SUBSYSTEM=="power_supply", ATTR{online}=="0", RUN+="/usr/sbin/testudev true"
SUBSYSTEM=="power_supply", ATTR{online}=="1", RUN+="/usr/sbin/testudev false"
2. create /usr/sbin/testudev script and make it executable
#!/usr/bin/env bash

logger "testudev: I'm: $(whoami)"
echo test >> /var/log/testudev.log

3. Plug and unplug the power plug. Check the syslog:
Apr 21 13:17:06 chrome root: testudev: I'm: root
Apr 21 13:17:06 chrome systemd-udevd[2]: Process '/usr/sbin/testudev false'
failed with exit code 1.

[Bug 1522922]

2016-01-08 Thread flux242
> think Mika is on the right track, having solved the initial problem
> (persistent flickering) by modifying the eDP link training. The remaining
> problem is that the flickering recurs when the display resumes from sleep.

in my case flickering occur just after reboot (and this is not the same
flickerin art like in the video). Then I need to run 'xset dpms force
off' command in the terminal at least once or many times until
flickering is gone. Afterwards I see no flickering any longer even if it
resumes from sleep. I can add that on the same hardware chromiumos works
flawlessly.

[Bug 1530068] [NEW] xfce4-power-manager lid close delay should be decreased

2015-12-30 Thread flux242
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 15.10
xfce4-power-manager 1.4.4-4ubuntu1

By default the delay after the lid is closed and before system is sent
to sleep is 3 seconds which is annoying. Please remove it completely or
reduce it to one or even halve a second. One could check what delay the
systemd (logind) is using because it works very fast. Maybe one should
wait until pm/sleep.d/ scripts finish and then go to sleep immediately
with no delay at all. Or introduce an additional switch for the delay in
seconds if it is really needed. What is it for anyway? De-bouncing or
something?

The reason for this change is that I need to wait for 3 seconds every
time I close the lid to check if the system is really sent to sleep. Due
to a hardware bug (I suppose) the system does not always go to sleep and
stays awake draining battery in an hour.

Btw, some people even switched to use systemd because of this delay:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfce4-power-manager/+bug/1222021/comments/5

would be nice to have it in 16.04 LTS,
thanks

[Bug 1307545] Re: Power Manager settings are ignored when closing laptop lid

2015-12-30 Thread flux242
I can confirm that even in Ubuntu 15.10 one has to set the
'logind-handle-lid-switch' to false manually. Please switch to use false by
default for the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. The code doesn't need to be changed, its just
enough to add the following command into the package installation script:
xfconf-query -c xfce4-power-manager -p
/xfce4-power-manager/logind-handle-lid-switch -n -t bool -s false

[Bug 1473733] Re: volume-icon alsa crashes in Vivid x86_64

2015-12-28 Thread flux242
My problem was that on my newer notebook 'HDA Intel PCH' sound card was
not the default for some reason. It's either different hardware or could
also be the fact that I'm using 15.10 instead of 14.04

You may try to change the 'card' parameter in the
.config/volumeicon/volumeicon. It is set to 'default' by default.
Changing it to 'card=hw:1' solved the problem here.

card=hw:1

[Bug 1522922]

2015-12-26 Thread flux242
patch https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/66697/ DOESN'T solve the
flickering problem on my computer.

What I did:
1. installed generic kernel and headers from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-nightly/2015-12-24-wily/
2. get the sources from the git://anongit.freedesktop.org/drm-intel branch
drm-intel-nightly (commit number: ec0382c73cb1adc972bebdd94afad3f0ea117114)
3. applied the patch https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/66697/
4. compiled the i915 driver and installed it:

mykern=${1:-$(uname -r)}
cp /usr/src/linux-headers-$mykern/Module.symvers .

# Prep tree
cp /boot/config-$mykern ./.config
make oldconfig
make prepare
make modules_prepare

# Build only the needed directories
make SUBDIRS=drivers/gpu/drm/i915 modules
[ -s /lib/modules/$mykern/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915.ko.orig ] || sudo cp
/lib/modules/$mykern/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915.ko{,.orig}
sudo cp drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915.ko
/lib/modules/$mykern/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/
5. reboot

But. Now with the kernel 4.4.xx if I run 'xset dpms force off' just
after the boot then the flicker is gone.

[Bug 1440381] Re: please build bindings for Python3

2015-12-20 Thread flux242
as it is stated in the http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=781913
it would be enough to move the libsamba-net out of the samba-libs into a
separate package libsamba-net. Then samba-libs would not dependent on python at
all. In turn gvfs-backends would be free of python too which would make it
possible to have python2 free desktop starting with the 16.04 lts.
The dependency to that new libsamba-net package should be added in the samba
package.

[Bug 1522922]

2015-12-17 Thread flux242

well, eventually means it could take halve a year until we got those
patches which makes our computers useless. I can also add that on my
computer I cannot enable vesa mode and i915.modeset=0 option makes the
screen black, i.e. bricks it. Reverting two patches for the ubuntu's
4.2.0.19 kernel like it was described above doesn't help either. I tried
to figure out how to apply your patch onto 4.2.0.19 but it seems like
training staff was moved out of the intel_dp.c and some files are
missing completely, so no luck.

Cloning the 1Gigabyte git repo like you suggest would also mean that I'd
need to compile drm driver code with the kernel version that in that
repo too right? Or I can copy the gpu/drm/i915 over to my kernel version
and it'll work?

[Bug 1475956] [NEW] xfsettingsd kills my current session upon lid event

2015-07-18 Thread flux242
Public bug reported:

I have not a standard DE configuration and I'm using xfsettingsd without
session manager. I cannot use xfce settings manager because it requires
xfwm and I'm using a different window manager. At start xfsettingsd
complains about missing session manager but it continue to work. Such a
configuration works perfectly well beside the fact that xfsettingsd
registers a lid close/open event handler and tries to shutdown monitor
outputs when the lid is closed. Here is a debug output of the lid close
event - http://paste.ubuntu.com/11902403/

The problem is that when the lid is closed all processes are killed upto
lightdm (login screen). I noticed that because one of my notebooks has 'eDP1'
display type and everything works as expected with it. Apparently this problem
occurs only for display types with 'LVDS' and 'PANEL' in their names:
[code]
for (n = 0; n < helper->outputs->len; ++n)
{
output = g_ptr_array_index (helper->outputs, n);
g_assert (output);

/* Try to find the internal display */
if (g_str_has_prefix (output->info->name, "LVDS")
|| strcmp (output->info->name, "PANEL") == 0)
{
lvds = output;
break;
}
}

if (!lvds)
return;
[/code]

As a workaround I hex edited the binary replacing 'LVDS' with 'LVDD'.
Still I'd prefer a more robust solution. Should the display state be
manipulated at all by the xfsettingsd upon lid event? Shouldn't this be
pm-utils task or xfce4-power-manager?

[Bug 1407400] [NEW] WLAN interface throughput drops thanks to NetworkManager

2015-01-04 Thread flux242
Public bug reported:

Here I have a pic of the wifi periodic drops http://i.imgur.com/JhRVP8F.png.
Server is connected to the router per LAN. I'm connecting to the server through
the router's WLAN. Bytes are transferred in one direction using nc. The graph
at the top is the CPU load on the router, another one below is the router's
wlan1(5GHz) iface throughput in MB/s. I thought that the router is guilty so I
measured cpu and wlan iface statistics on the router. But it turned out that
the problem lies on the client side and on the NetworkManager to be precise. As
these drops happens exactly with 120s periodicity I assume that it's the
background station scanning nm does even when connected to a station! To prove
that the nm is to blame I deactivated it and activated the wlan iface manually.
And here is how it looks like without nm - http://i.imgur.com/UWdUg4y.png

I consider this bug as major.

[Bug 1349056] Re: xfce4-power-manager doesn't suspend on lid closed (regression)

2014-07-27 Thread flux242
Hi Sean,

now the status. For the lid close event handler to work correctly with
the xfce4-power-manager package version 1.2.0-3ubuntu4.1 one has to do
the following:

1. Deifne the HandleLidSwitch=ignore in the /etc/systemd/logind.conf. If
this is not done then logind will handle the event no matter what
setting are effective in the xfce4-power-manager dialog.

2. Call xfconf-query -c xfce4-power-manager -p
/xfce4-power-manager/logind-handle-lid-switch -s true
note the true predicate, because logic is inverted:
++if ( LOGIND_RUNNING() )
++{
++g_object_get (G_OBJECT (manager->priv->conf),
++  LOGIND_HANDLE_LID_SWITCH, &logind_handle_lid_switch,
++  NULL);
++
++if (!logind_handle_lid_switch)
++return;
++}

as a side note 2: as freedesktop specification states:
$XDG_DATA_DIRS/icons specifies places where icons should be searched

additional actions are required for the menulibre installer. For some
reason my system doesn't look into the /usr/share/icons/hicolor folder
and also there's no icon-theme.cache file created there. Some package is

[Bug 1307469] Re: missing menulibre icon in the xfce-settings-manager

2014-04-21 Thread flux242
as a side note: the icon is properly shown in the full version of the
xubuntu 14.04. The only difference to my system I see is the icon copy
in the /usr/share/app-install/icons/menulibre.svg (it's because I do not
install the app-install-data package and I do not have app-install
folder). But if I remove the icon together with the /usr/share/app-
install/icon-theme.cache on the full installed system the setting dialog
still shows the icon correctly. There must be some other way for xfce to
find icons in /usr/share/icons/hicolor

[Bug 1307427] Re: librsvg2-common dependency is missing in xubuntu-desktop metapackage

2014-04-15 Thread flux242
umm, the hicolor-icon-theme should also be added as a direct dependency.
Without it many icons are missing

[Bug 1307427] [NEW] librsvg2-common dependency is missing in xubuntu-desktop metapackage

2014-04-14 Thread flux242
Public bug reported:

Having a dependency to the librsvg2-2 only is not enough. Without
librsvg2-common package it won't be possible to render svg icons. This
prevents from displaying set of desktop icons and also makes some
applications to stop functioning (catfish for example). Please add a
direct dependency to the librsvg2-common package.

ps. With normal xubuntu installation this dependency comes from the
recommended software-center, which includes an icon-theme that has
librsvg2-common dependency. I'm not installing software-center or
additional icon themes

I'm on 14.04 lts beta2 and xubuntu-desktop 2.180

[Bug 1280604] [NEW] Case insensitive search for non english file names doesn't work

2014-02-15 Thread flux242
Public bug reported:

Normally searches are case insensitive, so if I have two files: test and
Test then Catfish finds both of them. But if I have non english file
names then searches are case sensitive! To reproduce the bug you may
create two files in a local language where only case is different like:
Тест and тест and then search for тест. It will only find one file.
Tested with the Catfish version 0.6.3.

[Bug 1252606] [NEW] nm-applet doesn't show an icon if connected using a modem

2013-11-18 Thread flux242
Public bug reported:

So if I connect to a wifi access point is shows signal strength as an
icon. But if I connect to a 3G network using a USB modem the connection
is established and no signal strength icon is displayed. The connection
itself is made correctly and works, the nm_applet is still in the panel
and can be accessed using right or left mouse button, it just shows no
icon but an empty space! It worked perfectly before but after some
updated of different packages it stopped working and I'm not sure what
could be the reason. I'm using Xubuntu 13.04 but I also tried Xubuntu
13.10 and I have the same problem there.

I also tried to kill the nm-applet process and start it in the console -
it shows no warnings or error messages
