[Bug 1935770] Re: [Sound Output Built in Speaker to HDMI] No auto switch from Speaker to HDMI and back

2021-11-07 Thread forteller
Some times I do the following: I connect my laptop to a screen with HDMI
cable and in the settings set audio output to the HDMI. Later I
disconnect the HDMI cable without doing anything to the sound settings
and turn off the PC. When I turn on the PC again it thinks that the
sound should still go to the HDMI, even though it's no longer connected.
Going in to the sound settings the Output Device drop-down is blank, so
it obviously knows that the HDMI is disconnected, but it just doesn't
make any sound.

That's the main issue I have. Not switching to HDMI sound on connecting
the HDMI might be the best default, I'm not sure, but at least you might
have some other preference for where you want your sound to come from
when you connect it. But when you disconnect, the sound can no longer
come from the HDMI, so you never want it to keep to the HDMI output, you
always want it to switch to something else.

My intuition about what should happen when you connect HDMI: If the
current output is trough built in speakers it should automatically
switch to HDMI. If the current output is trough mini-jack or other
output (meaning the person is using a headset or external speakers), it
should keep the current setting and not switch to HDMI.

I have the exact same experience. Got the error today, haven't had it
before. And when I disconnected the phone the screen went blank for a
few nano seconds.

[Bug 520546] Re: Alt-f2 switches to virtual terminal 2

2017-10-10 Thread forteller
I seem to have almost exactly the same bug, and it's been bothering me
off and on for many months now. The step to reproduce in the latest
comment here from @anders works for me. (I only checked 'sudo setupcon
--force')

The only differences that I have is that

1) Alt + F2 doesn't send me to a terminal, but to the GUI (and if I'm
already in the GUI then it opens the run dialog as you'd expect) and

2) Ctrl + Alt + F-buttons still work during this bug for me.

This is the kind of bug that makes me think twice before recommending
Linux to non-technical people (which to me is the most important people
to recruit), so I'm really hoping it will get fixed soon. Thank you all
very much for your work!

Let me know if I can be of any help with any logs or the like.

2017-03-28 Thread forteller
This bug has now stopped me from installing Lubuntu 17.04 beta 2 and
both Cinnamon and LXDE version of Linux Mint 16.10. I have not tried to
change the partition settings manually, because that's too technical for
me. The interesting thing is that Deepin 15.3 installed and booted with
no issues.

[Bug 1531316] Re: Totem in full screen crashes Xorg

2016-01-10 Thread forteller
Sure, I can do that if it doesn't matter that:

1. That is "normal" Ubuntu, not Ubuntu Gnome.
2. I'll run it from a live USB.

Will all the conditions still be there to be sure that if Totem in full
screen doesn't crash Xorg there it will not do it in my real life
scenario either?

Thanks for changing the importance, btw! :)

[Bug 1531316] Re: Totem in full screen crashes Xorg

2016-01-09 Thread forteller
Thank you for helping me out here, Christopher! I've never reported an
Xorg bug before, so I appreciate the patience :)

I did what you asked, hope it helps. Not sure if it matters, but wanted
you to know that the whole process ended with this error message:

(process:2757): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion 'sys_page_size
== 0' failed
Gtk-Message: GtkDialog mapped without a transient parent. This is discouraged.
Gtk-Message: GtkDialog mapped without a transient parent. This is discouraged.

Hope you still got all you needed. (btw I was warned that I was sending
private info, so maybe this bug should be set to private?)

Also: Are you sure that this should be marked as a low priority bug? If
a less technically inclined person than me finds that they can't watch
movies in full screen in the default video player in their distro, they
might turn straight back to Windows/Mac, and tell everyone they know how
terrible this "Linux thing" their friend got them to try is…

Just a thought. User friendliness for normal PC users, so that as many
people as possible start using Linux, is really important to me :)

[Bug 1531316] Re: Totem in full screen crashes Xorg

2016-01-09 Thread forteller
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected ubuntu wily

** Description changed:

I tried reporting this to Totem[1], but they assured me this is an issue
  with X.

I've tried playing both mkv and avi files in Totem in a almost totally
newly installed Ubuntu Gnome 15.10 64 bit, updated to Gnome 3.18 with
  the Gnome Staging PPA.

Every time I play the files in full screen mode the screen turns black
and I'm logged out of my session. When I log back in I see that all
  programs are closed.

This happens at different times after going to full screen mode. Some
times after a second, other times after a few minutes.

It only happens in full screen, I can play the video for as long as I
want if I don't go full screen. It also only happens in Totem, I don't
experience it in full screen in VLC.

I don't know how to find the log files from the crash, but please let me
know how to do that if it can help.

This is quite critical for the adaptation of (Ubuntu) Gnome. Non
technical people will soon give up Linux if their first meeting with it
is that they can't play videos in full screen mode (they won't think of
the possibility of installing some other video player). So I hope you
will look into this closely even though it's a bit vague. If there's
anything I can do to help, please let me know!

  Thanks!

[Bug 1531316] [NEW] Totem in full screen crashes Xorg

2016-01-05 Thread forteller
Public bug reported:

Thanks!

[Bug 1296180] [NEW] "Disable touchpad while typing" does not work

2014-03-22 Thread forteller
Public bug reported:

I've seen some similar bugreports, but none exactly like this. In my
Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 "Disable touchpad while typing" does not work at all.
I can both move the cursor and click with it while typing. But the
manual way of turning off the touchpad with the Fn key works fine.

Let me know if I can do anything to help the process of tracking down
and fixing this bug in any way (except coding, which I can't).

[Bug 1296176] [NEW] [Notebook W840SU Series] suspend/resume failure

2014-03-22 Thread forteller
Public bug reported:

All I know is that I used my laptop on battery power until I got a
notification saying that the battery level was critically low and the
machine was automatically suspended. After plugging in the power and
turning it back on again I got this error message asking me to submit a
report.

NB: While the machine was suspended, before pluging in the power line, I
removed the secondary harddisk from the laptop. This is probably not
related, since the harddrive was not even mounted at the time the
machine was suspended. But I mention it just in case.

[Bug 1062985] Re: Connecting to some wireless networks does not work in battery mode

2012-10-12 Thread forteller
Sorry, I'm very new to this. How do I find the correct maintainer[0] to
contact? As I said initially my network card is Broadcom Corporation
NetXtreme BCM57760 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe (rev 01), and that is not on
the list. The closest thing I can find is "BROADCOM BCM2835 ARM
ARCHICTURE". Should I contact him?

2012-10-10 Thread forteller
Thanks Joseph! Doing what you asked did not help. Actually it was even
worse: NetworkManager didn't even recognize me having a wireless card at
all (at least the drop down from the indicator applet did not include
the option to "Enable Wireless").

I guess I was supposed to add the tag kernel-bug-exists-upstream even
though I'm not sure if it does indeed have the exact same bug. If that
was wrong then please remove it :)

[Bug 1063487] [NEW] Desktop icons/files gets mixed up and overlapped on boot from time to time

2012-10-07 Thread forteller
Public bug reported:

I have my desktop icons neatly placed in a grid, and mostly it stays
that way. But from time to time, when I turn on my PC, they have changed
places, most of them ending up on top of each other. Please see attached
screenshot.

I'm using 12.10 x64 (fully updated), but this has also happened in

PC before this happened, and I haven't noticed any pattern for when it
happens.

But #1051229, which has been marked as a duplicate of this (even though
I never saw anything about buffer overflow or anything. I guess it is a
duplicate anyway, just mentioning it in case there's been a mistake)
happened to me without having logged out or suspended the laptop. I was
just using it normally (Firefox, with LibreOffic, Thunderbird, Deluge,
Terminal, Gedit, Nautilus, Archive Manager running in the background)
when a message about this system crash/failure showed up.

Just to let you know it's not only upon login or wakeup or the like this
happens.

[Bug 746342] Re: Installer crashed on Eee 900 (something about installing apt from CD?)

2011-03-31 Thread forteller
I tried again, without choosing to download anything this time. I go the
same error message (translated from Norwegian by me): Trying to set up
apt to install more packages from CD failed (or was unsuccessful).

I also got this error message when trying to install Ubuntu 10.10
netbook edition.

[Bug 746342] [NEW] Installer crashed on Eee 900 (something about installing apt from CD?)

2011-03-31 Thread forteller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I was installing Natty A3 on an Eee PC 900 and had told it to download
updates during installs + install codecs/proprietary stuff. After the
install had run for a while (maybe it was at the very end. I don't know)
I got a popup saying something about it being unable to install apt from
CD (I think). I was installling from USB (created with Unetbootin),
there's no CD or other optical drive connected.

After dismissing that message (that's the reason I can't tell for sure
what it said: I don't remember and I can't see the message anymore)
another popup showed up, telling me to file this bug. I hope it is of
help! Thanks for your great work!

reemoo: I hadn't tried the search button before, but trying it now it
does the same for me. Hangs, just like with confirmation prompts.

Fabio Marconi: Why did you set this as invalid? There are clearly at

delete anything from our hard drives! Should it be reported somewhere
else?

[Bug 667508] Re: Shift+Del and replace files crashes/hangs NE

2010-11-10 Thread forteller
Previously I said:

"It seems like it happens every time I try to delete something
permanentely."

But I have now found that I was wrong. It seems rather that it happens
every time I try to do anything with a file that prompts Nautilus to ask
me a question. Because I have recently tried to open a file where I'm
asked if I want to run it, run it in terminal, etc.. And every time that
happens Nautilus freezes in the same fashion as when I try to delete
something.

Is there anything else I could do in Nautilus to get a different kind of
prompt, to check if that's actually the cause of the freezes?

So I guess the name of this bug should be changed.

(PS: Sorry about my bad English. I hope you still understand what I'm
trying to say)

[Bug 446606] Re: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: mount: only root can mount /dev/sdb1 on /media/audio

2009-10-25 Thread forteller
Well, after rebooting sdb1 (also known as Terra) now automatically
mounts to /media/t as I told it too in fstabs. So the problem is fixed
for me, but I had to fix it, so this bug still needs to be squashed!

[Bug 446606] Re: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: mount: only root can mount /dev/sdb1 on /media/audio

2009-10-23 Thread forteller
I've got the same issue with 9.10 RC after a clean install.

I've got two internal HDDs. I formated and installed Ubuntu 9.10 RC on
sda1 (with normal desktop 64bit CD, I checked the CD for errors first),
and set sdb1 to mount on /home/terra (Not a good idea, I guess, but I'm
no Linux expert).

When I first booted into 9.10 RC I could not find my HDD at all. I found
/home/terra, but it was empty. Later I saw my HDD in the Disk Utillity
app. I then tried to mount it to /media/t with the mount command (after
creating /media/t), but go this error:

mount: /dev/sdb1 already mounted or /media/t busy
mount: according to mtab, /dev/sdb1 is already mounted on /media/t

So I edited fstab to automount /dev/sdb1 to /media/t and restarted the
computer.

After this Terra showed up in the Places area (in Nautilus and the Gnome
panel), but clicking on it gives the error that started this bug report:

Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:
mount: only root can mount /dev/sdb1 on /media/t

While writing this last sentence, though, I went back to Nautilus to
find the exact error message again, but this time I actually got access
to Terra instead of the error message! I don't know what will happen
when I restart the computer. It's very late here, so I can't try that
now.

But even though it seems to be fixed for me now, I still though I should
let you know, because this gave me quite the scare, and if I didn't have
any Linux experience at all I would simply have assumed that Ubuntu had
errased all my data, and I would most likely jumped right back to
Windows.

Even after getting the notice that Sonata had crashed, Sonata was still

happened: I got the message that Sonata had crashed, but that didn't
seem to affect Sonata at all. This time (the second time) I reported it

[Bug 91791] [apport] firefox-bin crashed with SIGSEGV

2007-03-12 Thread forteller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

This kind of crash have happened many times before. It goes like this:
1. I have lots of tabs open (25-30).
2. I submit a comment on my WordPress blog which uses the theme K2 (not the
newest version). K2 uses some sort of AJAX to submit comments.
3. The second I've clicked the submit button I Ctrl+Tab or Ctrl+Shift+Tab to
another Tab.
4. Firefox crashes (not every time I do this, but too many times.

(my blog is located at blogg.forteller.net if that is of any help, but
you won't be able to read it, it's in Norwegian.. :))
