[Bug 1063656] Re: [Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32-bit] Unity GUI will hang during bootup with ATI Technologies Radeon X600 (RV380) and VIA Technologies PT880 Ultra chipset
((In reply to Comment #57) I currently don't have a working digital camera, so I cannot take a screen shot of the screen. If I remember the bug correctly, the recovery mode boot is fine (2D graphics mode), but not the regular boot (3D graphics mode). Personally, the procedure I am being asked to perform, I believe, is too much. What I don't like here is, after I do task 1, then I am asked to do task 2, and then task 3 . . . Where does it end? What will satisfy the developers to take a look at the bug? I believe there will have to be a better system in the future of collecting relevant bug information than the way stuff is being done currently. Isn't the observation that Ubuntu 12.04 boot fine in recovery mode (2D graphics mode), but not with regular boot (3D graphics mode) adequate? [Bug 1161596] [NEW] [Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS 32-bit] NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT AGP graphics card will not display any text characters on VIA Technologies Apollo MVP3-based mainboard
Public bug reported: Hi, I will report that when I use BFG Technologies GeForce 7300 GT AGP graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT AGP 512 MB DDR2 SDRAM) on FIC VA-503+ mainboard (VIA Technologies Apollo MVP3 chipset), it will not display text characters when AGP aperture setting is set to 64 MB, 128 MB, or 256 MB settings. If the AGP aperture size is set to 32 MB or less (i.e., 4 MB, 8 MB, 16 MB, and 32 MB), the text characters will get displayed correctly on the screen. The same exact bug has also been observed with EVGA GeForce 6200 AGP graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce 6200 AGP 256 MB DDR2 SDRAM). Furthermore, I have another similar era FIC mainboard (FIC KA-6110 mainboard) with VIA Technologies chipset (Apollo Pro 133 chipset), it exhibits the same exact behavior with EVGA GeForce 6200 AGP, and the exact same workaround (i.e., Set AGP aperture size to less than or equal to 32 MB, as already stated.) resolves the issue. Even if the screen does not correctly display the text characters, the system does not crash or freeze, and Nouveau is able to draw graphic objects on the screen. However, text characters do not get displayed on the screen. Because this bug appears when I adjust the AGP aperture size higher, I won't be surprised if this is a bug of agpgart-via kernel driver or via-agp kernel module. Note that BFG Technologies GeForce 7300 GT AGP graphics card is capable of running in a 3.3V AGP environment, and that is the reason why I am able to test this graphics card with this very old Socket 7 era chipset. Honestly, I am surprised that Nouveau didn't freeze or crash with this old chipset, but I still want this annoying bug fixed. [Bug 1019863] Re: Occasional ATI Radeon 9800 Pro and Intel D815EEA2 mainboard ACPI S3 State Resume Freeze
Hi, I have not commented on this bug for some time, but I will like to provide the final analysis so that it can be closed up for good. After not seeing any crashes/freezes when I used Toshiba 256 MB SDRAM modules (Toshiba module with Toshiba DRAM devices), I tried playing around with different combinations of the original 2 (two) 128 MB SDRAM modules and 1 (one) 256 MB SDRAM module. It turns out one of the no brand 128 MB SDRAM module with Mosel Vitelic DRAM devices seems to cause crashes/freezes when I put the computer into ACPI S3 State and wake it up. It appears that the self refresh mode of this 128 MB SDRAM module with Mosel Vitelic DRAM device causes memory content corruption, and this leads Ubuntu to freeze/crash at some point (i.e., After putting the computer in and out of ACPI S3 State so many times.). Just for the record, the marking of the DRAM device says V54C3128804VAT7 with a date code 0213 (13th week of 2002). I assume I just got a bad memory module. I didn't notice this until now, and insisted that memtest86+ didn't catch any memory read/write error, but if I think about it, memtest86+ is powerless as a tool against this type of a failure is because it doesn't have the means to put the memory into self refresh mode and bring it out to check the content of the memory array. While this case is specific to SDRAM, this type of failure can occur on any DRAM type since SDRAM because all of them now have self refresh mode. So if there is anyone reading this analysis, remember that the memory array can get corrupted if for some reason self refresh mode no longer works correctly (i.e., due to aging), and this can lead to seemingly random crashes/freezes after waking the computer up from ACPI S3 State. I know that this case is already closed and I am now happy to finally close this case as well. [Bug 1019863] Re: Occasional ATI Radeon 9800 Pro and Intel D815EEA2 mainboard ACPI S3 State Resume Freeze
Hi Christopher, I don't have access to this mainboard for 2 more weeks due to travel, but before I departed, I tested the board with a different set of PC133 SDRAM DIMMs. Interestingly, it did not cause a freeze with these DIMM modules. I put my computer into standby about 10 times, and the computer came out of standby 10 times in a row. I ran Firefox on the background to put more stress on the system. Based on my judgement, it seems like with the previous DIMM modules, the DRAM is getting corrupted after coming out of ACPI S3 State. It seems like the slow refresh mode is not working properly on at least one of the previous DIMM module. By the way, with the previous DIMM modules, they do pass Memtest86+ without any errors, but I have learned from my experience troubleshooting PC related problems so often that some bad DIMM modules do cause memory cell corruption if the DIMM modules enter slow refresh mode. The memory cell corruption issue manifests itself after waking up the computer after the contents of the memory is corrupted. For the previous DIMM modules used, it was something like this, - PNY PC133 256MB module (DS) - generic PC133 128MB module (SS, Micron Technology DRAM chip) - generic PC133 128MB module (SS) generic DIMM module means it is not obvious from the DIMM that who manufactured the DIMM. For the configuration that didn't cause any issues, this was the configuration. - Toshiba PC133 256MB module (DS, Toshiba DRAM chip) - Toshiba PC133 256MB module (DS, Toshiba DRAM chip) SS means Single Sided. DS means Double Sided. I do have more PC133 SDRAM DIMMs so I will test the mainboard with more DIMMs to see if this bug is specific to one bad module. I will update the above list when I get back. At this point, it is increasingly likely that a bad DIMM this mysterious bug. If this is the case, I am very sorry for wasting the resources of the Linux developers, but unfortunately, it is often difficult to catch slow refresh related memory cell corruption hardware failures. Memtest86+ does not have the means to catch this kind of problem, and I have seen this type of bug with a DDR SDRAM DIMM a few months ago. [Bug 1019863] Re: Occasional ATI Radeon 9800 Pro and Intel D815EEA2 mainboard ACPI S3 State Resume Freeze
(In reply to comment #8) Hi, Okay, I just had a crash with Linux 3.7 kernel. Whether it is Linux 3.2 or 3.7 kernel, it seems like page fault is one of the cause of the crash after ACPI S3 State resume. However, Ubuntu is a lot more stable with Linux 3.7 kernel, but when it crashed, the crash pattern was similar to when it crashes with Linux 3.2 kernel. Also with Linux 3.2 kernel, even after resuming from ACPI S3 State once, the system tends to get unstable (i.e., I get random Ubuntu has experienced internal error type errors. The module that crashes is pretty much random.). Is this bug specific to Pentium III or Intel 815 chipset? I will rule out ICH2 southbridge because it was also used with early Pentium 4 systems, and those are fairly stable when it comes to ACPI S3 State resume. I have a couple of Intel and ASUS mainboards with Intel 850 chipset, and I have never seen this types of issues with ACPI S3 State resume. I will change the tag to reflect the latest development. I also have one other Intel 815E chipset mainboard from Intel (Intel D815EEA mainboard) so I will take a look at that one to see if I can reproduce the similar crash patterns. Intel did have many, many updates related to ACPI S3 State resume issues with D815EEA2 mainboard in the past. Hi, I will like to report that I tested Intel D815EEA2 mainboard with ATI Radeon 9800 Pro AGP graphics card with v3.7-rc7-raring version of the Linux kernel on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32-bit, and after performing 7 resumes with Firefox running on the background, I did not observe a single freeze related to ACPI S3 State resume. However, if I went back to the standard kernel of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32-bit, then I saw several freezes when performing an ACPI S3 State resume. It seems like something was fixed between Linux 3.2 and 3.7 kernels. It is possible that I was just lucky with Linux 3.7 kernel, but typically, resume typically fails on third or fourth time with Linux 3.2 kernel. [Bug 1068393] Re: [Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32-bit] SiS chipset USB wakes up the system from ACPI S3 State instantaneously bug
** Description changed: I have discovered a serious bug where Ubuntu wakes up the system from ACPI S3 State instantaneously if I am using a system with SiS chipset's USB. This bug seems to have started with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (3.2 Linux kernel) because it didn't exist in Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS 32-bit (2.6 Linux kernel). As far as I know, this bug occurs with SiS 963 and 964 southbridges. I observed this bug with ASUS P4S8X (SiS 648/963) and ASUS P4S8X-MX (SiS 661GX/964) mainboards. WORKAROUND: The problem will go away if I disable SiS chipset's USB in BIOS setup. Please read Comment #10. Also, if I am correct, SiS/XGI x.org display device driver hasn't been updated since 2008 or so if I am correct so I don't think you can blame the problem on xserver-xorg-video-sis package. [Bug 1063656] Re: [Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32-bit] Unity GUI will hang during bootup with ATI Technologies Radeon X600 (RV380) and VIA Technologies PT880 Ultra chipset
(In reply to Comment #50) Hi Christopher, I tried Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit. Ubuntu will hang right after it resizes the screen. When booting, Ubuntu logo will be on the center of the screen, but right before the hang, it will resize the screen, and Ubuntu logo will still be there without the flashing dots. Keyboard and mouse still work so it is not a freeze, but this symptom is fairly similar to what I have been reporting. The difference is that there is no wallpaper on the screen (The background is blank.). I suspect this bug to be related to the GUI change (GNOME to Unity) that happened in Ubuntu 11.04. Hi, I have an update on this bug. For Bug (2) (See bug description: The graphics starts out in interlaced mode if I use Gateway EV700 CRT monitor with it), I will report that this is a regression. [Bug 1088282] [NEW] [Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32-bit] Unity GUI will hang during bootup with AMD Radeon HD 4350 (RV710) and VIA Technologies PT880 Ultra chipset
Public bug reported: Hi, This bug report is very similar to Launchpad bug #1063656 (Unity GUI will hang during bootup with ATI Technologies Radeon X600 (RV380) and VIA Technologies PT880 Ultra chipset). https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1063656 I have this mainboard called ASUS P5VD1-X. This is a little odd ball of a mainboard. It contains an AGP 8X Slot (AGP 1.5V) and a PCI Express Gen 1 x16 Slot (x16 connector, x4 link). Both AGP and PCI Express are connected to the Northbridge chip, VIA Technologies PT880 Ultra. PT880 Ultra is one of the last VIA Technologies chipset that supported Intel platform. A perfect mainboard to do hardware compatibility validation against number of cards and Linux. I updated the BIOS to the last release version (Revision 0704). The problem is, booting will stop after displaying Unity GUI default background wallpaper image under Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32-bit. It won't get to displaying launch bar with icons on the left side of the screen or a title bar on the top part of the screen. I suspect this bug to be there due to lack of testing. Very few VIA Technologies PCI Express supporting chipset exist, and I assume very little validation testing was done on VIA Technologies PCI Express supporting chipset. The only temporary workaround I found was to run Ubuntu 12.04 LTS in recovery mode, and everything works fine. It is just that it won't work the normal way. System Configuration: - Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32-bit - ASUS P5VD1-X mainboard * BIOS Revision 0704 * VIA Technologies PT880 Ultra (Northbridge) * VIA Technologies VT8237R Plus (Southbridge) - Intel Pentium D * 2.66 GHz * 533 MHz FSB - 1 GB MB DDR400 DDR SDRAM * 512 MB DDR400 DDR SDRAM DIMM X 2 (in dual channel mode) - MSI R4350 MD1GD3H graphics card * AMD Radeon HD 4350 (RV710) * 1 GB DDR3 SDRAM * PCI Express x16 - Maxtor 80 GB PATA hard drive - Sony PATA DVD-RW drive - PS/2 keyboard - PS/2 mouse Workaround: Press Shift during boot to enter GRUB's menu screen. Select recovery mode boot instead of normal boot Please don't flag this bug as a duplicate because I was told that one report per hardware configuration. [Bug 1068393] Re: [Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32-bit] SiS chipset USB wakes up the system from ACPI S3 State instantaneously bug
(In reply to Comment #29 and #30) Hi Christopher, I tested Ubuntu 11.10 without installing it (i.e., Try Ubuntu without installing) on ASUS P4S8X-MX mainboard. I will say that Ubuntu 11.10 does not suffer from the USB instant wakeup bug that currently exists in Ubuntu 12.04. Here is what /proc/acpi/wakeup looks like, $ cat /proc/acpi/wakeup DeviceS-state Status Sysfs node UAR1 S4*disabled pnp:00:08 PS2K S4*enabled pnp:00:0c PS2M S4*disabled pnp:00:0d EUSB S3*disabled pci::00:03.3 USB S3*disabled pci::00:03.0 USB2 S3*disabled pci::00:03.1 USB3 S3*disabled pci::00:03.2 AC97 S4*disabled pci::00:02.7 MC97 S4*disabled PCI1 S4*disabled PCI2 S4*disabled PCI3 S4*disabled MAC S4*disabled pci::00:04.0 Instant wakeup is not happening because Status for EUSB and USBx devices are at *disabled state. In Ubuntu 12.04 (Linux 3.2), they will all be at *enabled state. Just to confirm the Linux kernel version, $ uname -r 3.0.0-12-generic The result here is in line with what Lan Tianyu discussed in Comment #26 of this same bug report I submitted over there at kernel.org. https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47991#c26 Regards, fpgahardwareengineer -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1068393 Title: [Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32-bit] SiS chipset USB wakes up the system from ACPI S3 State instantaneously bug To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/1068393/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1063656] Re: [Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32-bit] Unity GUI will hang during bootup with ATI Technologies Radeon X600 (RV380) and VIA Technologies PT880 Ultra chipset
Hi, Because I speculated that a bug in x.org ATI Technologies/AMD display device driver was causing issues on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32-bit, most of my analysis of the issue is at freedesktop.org's Bugzilla. https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=55784 Anyway, for now I changed the graphics card to XFX Radeon HD 5450 512 MB PCIe graphics card since several ATI Technologies/AMD PCIe graphics cards exhibit the same bug behavior with ASUS P5VD1-X mainboard on Ubuntu 12.04. I installed the latest v3.7-rc7-raring version of the Linux kernel for regression testing purposes from this URL. http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.7-rc7-raring/ I still see the exact same bug behavior with v3.7-rc7-raring. I made sure the Linux kernel version is 3.7-rc7 from Terminal the following way. $ uname -r 3.7.0-030700rc7-generic I found a temporary workaround of the bug and I will discuss it shortly. In the meantime, I will add, kernel-bug-exists-upstream-3.7-rc7 And remove, needs-upstream-testing From the Tags section. [Bug 1063656] Re: [Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32-bit] Unity GUI will hang during bootup with ATI Technologies Radeon X600 (RV380) and VIA Technologies PT880 Ultra chipset
Hi, First of all, note that I used XFX Radeon HD 5450 512 MB PCIe graphics card for the analysis, and not the original ATI Technologies Radeon X600 PCIe graphics card for no particular reason. I will redo the testing with ATI Technologies Radeon X600 PCI graphics card later. Here is what I found so far. 1) Everything works fine on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 32-bit (more precisely Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS 32-bit with all the updates via Update Manager), including ACPI S3 State resume. 2) Something broke in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32-bit, and hangs up after displaying Ubuntu desktop's reddish wallpaper (i.e., Mouse is alive, keyboard is alive, but goes nowhere from there.). 3) On Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32-bit, if I booted it in recovery mode via Grub, and then select 'resume' when prompted, everything will work fine like it did in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 32-bit. 4) I installed Linux kernel 3.7-rc7 (v3.7-rc7-raring), but it has the same bug as in Linux kernel 3.2.0-34. 5) I was able to install Ubuntu 12.04 with the above configuration, but cannot run Ubuntu from a hard drive or DVD non-installation boot (i.e., Run Ubuntu without installing option). Weird bug. 6) I suspect this is a bug related to Ubuntu desktop or Unity, not x.org ATI Technologies/AMD display device driver because the recovery mode workaround works fine. 7) Again, everything works fine as long as recover mode method already discussed is used, including ACPI S3 State resume I make a lot of noise about all the time. 8) This bug probably didn't get caught during beta testing of Ubuntu 12.04 because very few people own VIA Technologies chipset-based mainboard with PCI Express. I doubt this is a bug of their chipset as everybody likes to blame them all the time as a buggy chipset vendor. So for those that need a workaround, use recovery mode and select 'resume.' That's the only workaround I know right now. Someone, please fix this weird bug specific to Ubuntu 12.04. [Bug 1063656] WifiSyslog.txt
apport information ** Attachment added: WifiSyslog.txt https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1063656/+attachment/3448867/+files/WifiSyslog.txt ** Description changed: Hi, I recently obtained a mainboard called ASUS P5VD1-X. Note that I observed the same exact problem with XFX Radeon HD 5450 512 MB DDR3 SDRAM graphics card (AMD Radeon HD 5450, Cedar PRO). This bug doesn't seem to occur on Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA chipset-based mainboards for some reason. System Configuration: - Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32-bit - ASUS P5VD1-X mainboard * BIOS Revision 0704 * VIA Technologies PT880 Ultra (Northbridge) * VIA Technologies VT8237R Plus (Southbridge) - Intel Pentium D * 2.66 GHz * 533 MHz FSB - 512 MB DDR 400 DDR SDRAM * 256 MB DDR 400 DDR SDRAM DIMM X 2 (in dual channel mode) - ATI Technologies Radeon X600 graphics card * RV380 * 128 MB DDR SDRAM * PCI Express x16 - Pioneer DVR-111D PATA DVD-RW drive - PS/2 keyboard - PS.2 mouse Note that because I cannot boot Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32-bit, the files attached is from Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS 32-bit. [Bug 1063656] Re: [Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32-bit] Unity GUI will hang during bootup with ATI Technologies Radeon X600 (RV380) and VIA Technologies PT880 Ultra chipset
(In reply to Comment #44) Hi Christopher, I put ATI Technologies Radeon X600 PCI Express graphics card back into the original system. I got results identical to XFX Radeon HD 5450 512 MB PCIe graphics card. If I used recovery mode, everything is fine including graphics rendering and ACPI S3 State resume, but as long as I try to boot the normal way whether it is Linux 3.2.34 or 3.7-rc7 it will get hung up after rendering the reddish wallpaper (Again, mouse and keyboard are alive, but nothing I can do from that point other than to hard reset the system.). I attached lspci output under 3.7-rc7 to prove that I went back to Radeon X600. Someone involved in the Unity GUI needs to take a look at this bug. Hi Christopher, Several more things. 1) Can you change the status of this bug so that developers are aware of the bug, especially people who deal with Unity GUI? 2) Can you add a workaround description to this bug that recovery mode can allow users to workaround this bug until the bug is fixed? 3) I believe I have seen this bug on SiS 761GX chipset-based mainboard (ECS 761GX-M754) with XFX Radeon HD 5450 512 MB PCIe graphics card. I will post a report on it in the next couple of days after I reproduce and analyze the bug. 4) I will perform tests on 2 more AMD PCIe graphics cards that are likely impacted by this bug. I will post the results in the next couple of days. [Bug 1075511] [NEW] [Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32-bit] Several SiS 661GX / 761GX (Real 256E graphics) issues
Public bug reported: Hi, I will like to report that SiS 661GX's integrated graphics (Real 256E graphics) has number of issues (bugs) under Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32-bit. 1) Ubuntu logo doesn't get displayed until the last moment, and it is at a low screen resolution In a typical system, during boot, Ubuntu displays its graphical logo with red dots flashing on the screen. In a SiS 661GX-based system, the screen will have a dark purple background pretty much throughout the boot up, and Ubuntu graphical logo will not get displayed until just right before the login screen gets displayed. 2) The graphics starts out in interlaced mode if I use Gateway EV700 CRT monitor with it I often use this computer (see System Configuration 1) with Gateway EV700 CRT monitor. Unfortunately, Ubuntu will choose interlaced mode for the screen (87 Hz Interlaced). Since Ubuntu 12.04 doesn't have a direct way to alter the screen refresh rate from its control panel like menu, the screen quality will be quite poor. Since the monitor itself it capable of 1024 X 768 @ 75 Hz Non-Interlaced, shouldn't this behavior (starting out in interlaced mode) be considered a bug? 3) Mouse cursor disappears if there is rendering happening underneath it I don't know if the SiS x.org display device driver uses hardware cursor feature of SiS graphics (I am assuming that SiS graphics supports hardware cursor.), but I notice that it disappears when there is some rendering happening underneath it. Particularly noticable in Firefox. I didn't observe this with NVIDIA or ATI Technologies graphics so I assume this is a bug. 4) Screen horizontal and/or vertical frequency goes nuts during restart or shut down When I try to restart or shut down this computer, the monitor's horizontal and/or vertical frequency goes out of range. I don't know which one goes out of range, and I have no way of knowing this. I will say that this is potentially dangerous since it can damage a monitor, although if I am correct, most monitors have ways to detect this kind of condition, and will display a warning message to prevent damage to the monitor. Regardless, it is not a desirable condition, and I believe this should be considered a bug. Overall, these issues mentioned here didn't exist in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 32-bit. All of them appeared in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32-bit. Regarding this SiS Real256E integrated graphics, I have another mainboard called ECS 761GX-M754 (SiS 761GX/964 chipset). The integrated graphics inside SiS 761GX is identical to SiS 661GX. SiS 761GX also exhibits issues similar to what was described here. Public bug reported: Hi, I get this weird error message when I try to report a bug of xorg package. This is not an official Ubuntu package. Please remove any third party package and try again. What does this mean? I think I started to see this ever since I installed Linux 3.7-rc2 kernel from, http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.7-rc2-raring/ To see if the latest Linux kernel has an issue with SiS chipset's instantaneous wakeup from ACPI S3 State, I installed Linux 3.7-rc2 kernel. But as far as I can remember, ever since that I do get the above error message when I run ubuntu-bug from Terminal.
