[Bug 1072571] [NEW] no audio after unplugging hdmi monitor

2012-10-29 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

what happened:
after disconnecting an hdmi cable from my computer, there was no audio from my
computer.

pulseaudio had crashed.
i noticed this by opening the sound settings dialog and clicking the test
sound button: nothing happened, no dialog popped up.

subsequently, i did a:
  ps aux | grep pulseaudio

and killed the pid of the pulseaudio server (SIGTERM).
then i started the server again with the same command that the process i killed
obviously used:
/usr/bin/pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog

problem worked-around.

[Bug 1018821] [NEW] Connection Information window doesn't update upon changing connection

2012-06-28 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

open the Connection Information window accessible via
Indicator Menu Network Connection Information

keep it open in the foreground and change the connection

observe that not all fields are being updated, but Speed: is.

The title of this window is Active Network Connections.
This is incorrect, since the first field of this listing ( Connection Name ) is
never updated.
I'd have to close the window and re-open it again in order to see the updated
value.
OTOH, Connection Speed updates in realtime, suggesting that i'm looking at all
active|live|current information.
This is misleading.

Either the title Active Network Connections should be removed entirely
to be replaced with the first field in the listing ( Connection Name )
itself, or the values shown in the Window Connection Information
should all be live and instantly updated.

[Bug 393808] Re: Allow displaying different virtual desktops on different devices

2012-06-12 Thread frederik.nnaji
the problem this would help solve would be for example to easily assign a full
screen application, be it a webapp in a browser or a presentation, to a
seperate display output channel, all this being done by an ordinary user with
no expert knowledge on a desktop window management level.
thank you.
problem solved.

the alterternative would be to write xorg.conf from scratch, and that
means the user has to work with the command line to assign a specific
picture to a specific output and the user must learn the extremely
poorly documented configuration language of xorg.conf

[Bug 904505] Re: Flash doesn't work in epiphany-browser

2012-06-10 Thread frederik.nnaji
Jeremy: so is this definitely a wontfix then?
I think that the real problem is with GTK3.
The DECISION not to be flash-compatible is certainly more of a political
nature, and i can't say i'm totally opposed to it.

still, it should be noted, incompatibility with flash is a major selling
point missed, and bug #1 will have this additional stumbling stone to
overcome on it's long path to being fixed.

[Bug 966885] [NEW] quit should terminate process

2012-03-28 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

The quit option from the the quicklists doesn't terminate rhythmbox.
when rhythmbox is open, playing music, selecting Quit from the File menu
terminates the process and hereby stops the playback, too.

Quit should always mean quit = terminate the process and remove it from memory.
Close is something else, and it is ok if Close does what Window Close does,

[Bug 616447] Re: Quit does not actually quit applications

2012-02-24 Thread frederik.nnaji
if it doesn't quit, don't call it quit.
That's the law of correspondence.

Please simply correct the label to close wherever you know that it doesn't
make the process tree of an application's pid quit.
This is already known to be valid for the quicklist quit entries of
Rhythmbox, Empathy and Transmission.

It is clearly wrong to afford a button labeled Quit, well knowing that it
will NOT make anything quit. We're actually cheating the user, some people
consider this a security issue, some might consider it an intrusion.
This is trivial, so it needs to be fixed wherever reported.

Analysing the dependency tree of a pid together with its associated
frontend application and window set is a whole other task, which has
nothing to do with labelling a button or list item correctly.

[Bug 900866] [NEW] Epiphany doesn't appear in window management

[Bug 891539] [NEW] Fullscreen via F11 should work

2011-11-17 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

at the moment, pressing F11 in most applications in Ubuntu sends the
application main window into fullscreen mode.
Fullscreen mode is important, especially when one wants to do dedicated work
that requires using the screen edges and corners WITHIN an application. When an
application main window is maximized, touching the left edge of the screen
would still bring up the launcher, which would cover often crucial UI elements
of the respective suite, e.g. Libreoffice, Gimp, Inkscape.
Pressing F11 to take the application main window into fullscreen mode remedies
this problem.

Unfortunately, inconsistently with nearly all other apps, LibreOffice
binds a different operation to F11, while fullscreen is available via
CTRL+SHIFT+J.

F11 should consistently activate fullscreen in all fullscreen-capable
apps in Ubuntu/Unity.

[Bug 792767] Re: When typing an application's name in the Dash, there is no visual cue that focus is on the first item in the list

2011-10-25 Thread frederik.nnaji
i don't agree, imo this is a flaw i.e. a bug in how the dash works.
perhaps it's a design bug, interaction design that is.

if an item has focus, it should indicate that to the user.
the current behaviour is that the respective item does not indicate whether or
not it is focused, unless spacially navigated to via mouse or keyboard. This
makes interaction slower, uncertain.

[Bug 799382] [NEW] SendReceive should be seperate processes

2011-06-19 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

in Evolution Mail, SendReceive is one combined process, which is
confusing and makes sending email messages extremely slow.

Example:
jeremy composed a new email message to recepi...@domain.tld and presses send.
Evolution Mail stores the message in Outbox, instead of sending it.
Jeremy is surprised to see an unsent message in his outbox, so he hits the only
button in the main Evolution Mail UI that contains the word send, which
happens to be the SendReceive button in the main toolbar.
Now, upon invoking this process, evolution starts querying information in all
folders and subfolders it is configured to search via IMAP, instead of simply
sending the message. Jeremy is confused and hits cancel all, after he notices
that the unsent message in OUTBOX is nolonger there.

This situation is a classic in Evolution 2.32.2 on Ubuntu (Unity) 11.04

$ apt-cache policy evolution
evolution:
  Installed: 2.32.2-0ubuntu7
  Candidate: 2.32.2-0ubuntu7
  Version table:
 *** 2.32.2-0ubuntu7 0
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty/main i386 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Instead, Send and Receive should be seperate processes.
Receive should be automatic, if the user configures it to be so upon initial
setup (firstrun wizard), otherwise there should be a button like check mail
or refresh.

Send should be restricted to the individual message. Bulk sending is

  Example:
jeremy composed a new email message to recepi...@domain.tld and presses

Evolution Mail stores the message in Outbox, instead of sending it.
Jeremy is surprised to see an unsent message in his outbox, so he hits the

No, because the grid plugin is supposed to tile windows to a specific

i still don't see the contradiction..

2011-05-22 Thread frederik.nnaji
i think we need to fix the higher level problem here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/694533

the window would be to the point and concise, if it actually showed
only recent conversations with the contact it was opened for.

a general recency sorted overview for all contacts would also be
desireable, but it should be sorted according to recency or frequency of
contact, and not at all in the impractical manner in which it is now
being displayed.

[Bug 770331] [NEW] drag-switch doesn't support dragging

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

in the Accounts Manager for Empathy, dragging the [ON|OFF] toggle for
the respective service is not possible, rather clicking is required to
change that state.

These switches should support mouse dragging, as their visual properties
resemble physical objects, which would be moved the same way, and they
look less like discrete buttons that would require discrete clicking.

yeah, away/idle is quite annoying, when it doesn't work. people see you
online and message you, expecting you to respond, since you're neither
busy nor away.
Some will always think you're ignoring them or being indifferent, when you
don't respond.

Interpreting Away as Offline on the other hand is a little harsh and
doesn't solve the problem at all.

[Bug 708545] [NEW] application name shown in appmenu instead of document title

2011-01-27 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-appmenu

AIUI the HIG says we shouldn't show the app's name in the titlebar.
The most important element of a document-based application's window title is
the name of the open document.
( see:
http://library.gnome.org/devel/hig-book/stable/windows-primary.html.en#primary-window-titles
 )

I tried this in evince / Natty alpha.

Appmenu (File, Edit, View etc.. ) was only visible on mouse-over, which is good
imo.
The text displayed in its stead was document viewer, the descriptive name of
the Application.
This is foobar, since it doesn't give the user information about *what*
document is being presented.

After a mouse over to the appmenu area, the application name
disappeared, and the document title was displayed instead, which makes
sense.

i am guessing this happens only when a document is first opened. After the
first mouseover to the AppMenu area, the document title is shown instead.
AIUI the app name should *never* show up in the AppMenu area, since we want the
system to be invisible and to just work.
An app name in this respect would be a part of the system, but the document
title or name would be information relevant to the user.

I went into the kitchen to do some painting, then i returned to my computer.

This shouldn't happen.
Busy a.k.a. Do Not Disturb is a mode explicitly set by the User.

[Bug 693903] Re: ambiguous icons in toolbar CANCEL vs DELETE

2011-01-20 Thread frederik.nnaji
i think there are many examples of how an interface can be designed to be
consistent with its DE.
Evolution stands out, in that its frontend obviously has no aim to be
consistent with the remaining DE, and i'm not talking about any persons
responsible for that, it is just the way the whole project appears to be in its
nature, from my point of view that is.

I have decided to invest my time into developing modern concepts,
instead of fixing this old imo brokon one.

If you have any questions or you believe i can still help, since there
are devs who wouldn't mind some design ideas, i'm available, but i won't

hi Eric,
i see your point, it is a question of individual preference, and so there is a
workaround already in the preferences. The workaround otoh will stop your
incoming chat messages from being shown in the messaging menu :P

TBH it is not quite easy to discover, because this feature:
* is hidden in a sub-tab (the wrong one) of the preferences window
* is therefore hidden behind a semantically different title
* is activated by deactivating an other feature, i.e. doesn't have its own
switch

i marked this bug a duplicate of #652568

[Bug 694345] Re: workspace switcher should be static

2011-01-11 Thread frederik.nnaji
i think the static buttons should be styled differently, in that they are no
launchers and are not styled as such.
the Trash e.g. should not have a background, its icon should be directly on the
sidebar.
This way it is more obvious that it will not behave like a launcher when
interacted with.

the workspace switcher should be on top right beneath the Ubuntu button,
extremes.
Bottom for trash, top for system-default launchers that must stay in the unity
dock.
There is really no meaning in drawing a box around the workspace switcher
either.

2011-01-01 Thread frederik.nnaji
file a seperate bug.

2011/1/1 Martin Schröder 256...@bugs.launchpad.net

Now grouping of contacts works, that's right.
But if a contact chooses to switch the protocol (which many of my friends
with multiprotocol clients do randomly), another chat window opens.
The behavior I expect is like in pidgin: merged contacts share a single
 chat window.

[Bug 694537] [NEW] no throbber when Hide Toolbars is active

2010-12-26 Thread frederik.nnaji

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

Epiphany has the wonderful option of hiding its toolbars all in one click.
Now, when the toolbars are hidden, it is quite easy to show them again

Unfortunately, the indicators for page loading activity i.e. a throbber
and the progress bar inside the location bar are invisible in this mode,

[Bug 543953] Re: Evolution should support a fullscreen mode

2010-12-26 Thread frederik.nnaji
this hasn't gotten better.. Evolution is still the main UMA in Ubuntu, even in
Unity on UNE.
Horizontal display space is reduced by the Unity launcher, so there is no way
to profit of the full display space in Evolution.

is anybody working on a design for Full Screen Mode? let me know, i'll
help with ideas and mockups..

[Bug 694580] [NEW] thread view duplicates initiating mail

2010-12-26 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

evolution makes it very hard to read email threads in a chronological
manner.

threads are currently presented in the following way:
initial message
- response [last]
- response [last but one]
- response [last -2]
- response [last -3]
- response [last -4]
 [...]
- response [first]
- initial message

first of all, this duplicates the initial message in thread view -
quite confusing.

The most frequently used ways of sorting email views are unread on top and
last on top, in both cases the most recent messages are on top.
In that respect, Thread View = TRUE should result in just the same: most recent
messages on top.
This is consistent and presents the user with a continuous timeline of messages.

The Subject of a thread should remain the original title without Re.

[Bug 694597] [NEW] can't remove On This Computer

2010-12-26 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

when first setting up Evolution Mail (Messaging Menu - Setup Mail), a user
creates a local entry with a custom name.
There is a checkbox [User] can tick for make this my default account.

when account setup is complete, and the mails start synchronizing, there
is an unexpected Account with all its folders which appears in the
folder list on the left: On This Computer

Before i ask about the purpose of On This Computer in Evolution, i'd rather
suggest its removal.
..unless of course we want to revert to using a local mail server as Desktop
notification system ;)

Looking at my Account Tree on the left, i have a complexity that exceeds
my comprehension:

1) On This Computer
- Inbox
- Drafts
- Junk
- Outbox
- Sent
- Templates
- Trash

2) MyGmail
- Inbox
- an IMAP folder
- an IMAP folder
- an IMAP folder
- an IMAP folder
- an IMAP folder called [GMAIL]
   - All Mail
   - Drafts
   - Important
   - Sent Mail
   - Spam
   - Starred
   - Trash

- Junk
- an IMAP folder
- an IMAP folder
- an IMAP folder
- an IMAP folder
- an IMAP folder
- Trash
- an IMAP folder
- an IMAP folder

3) Search Folders
- Unmatched

needless to say, today is the first day i'm actually going through this
entire tree without angering myself too much to ever reach the bottom.

There should be a way to put folders like Junk, Drafts, Outbox,
Sent and Trash on top just below the Inbox folder in my MyGmail,
instead of hosting them under On This Computer.

They also shouldn't be sorted alphabetically, but in sequence of most
frequent access. If this is an unknown, then one could employ a
technology to track the frequency of usage periodically, say once a
week, and re-order the folders accordingly, if the statistical value
difference exceeds a certain threshold.

[Bug 694302] [NEW] grid makes window corners round

2010-12-25 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

placing windows via compiz grid plugin can be regarded as maximizing them to a
certain region.
The intention is to tile windows, maximizing their usage of a side, hemisphere
or quadrant of the screen.

In this understanding, window corners should be drawn cornered and not rounded.
rounded corners are for non-maximized non snapped-to-grid windows floating
above the grid.

all snapped to grid windows should have cornered corners, i.e. not
rounded.

[Bug 694408] [NEW] window controls should share a uniform color

2010-12-25 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

at the moment, window controls are not consistent, since the close/hide button
is red, while minimize and maximize are both grey.
This leads to many misunderstandings about what window controls are and why
there is a close button on nearly every window, or what the close button is
there for.

the only use case i can imagine for coloring the window close button red
would be to indicate, whether the close operation will also quit the

[Bug 693811] [NEW] no back button when in single photo view

2010-12-23 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: shotwell

after double clicking an image to deal with it in single view, i would expect
to have a mouse way of getting back to the previous view, position, pan and
scale at once.
1) a simple back button would do the trick, since changing from gallery to
single view is like opening an extra page.
2) Alternatively, the thumb, upon double click, could scale in over the
gallery, eventually replacing the gallery view. In that case there should be a
thumb view button to take me back to the previous view sice, since scaling in
is reversed by scaling out in the user's natural mental model.
