[Bug 602049] Re: Suspend to RAM fails due to tpm_tis kernel module (regression)

2011-02-13 Thread fwyzard
Hi,
I've tried the suspend to ram with "2.6.35-26-generic #46-Ubuntu", after
commenting out the entry I usually have in /etc/pm/config.d/unload_module .

Unfortunately, it still hangs instead of suspending properly.

Let me know if you need more info.

Hi Andy,
I have "2.6.35-26-generic #46-Ubuntu" (from linux-image-2.6.35-26-generic
2.6.35-26.46).
Is that recent enough for the test ?

[Bug 657386] Re: tpm_tis kernel module hangs on resume after suspend

2010-10-10 Thread fwyzard
Instead of blacklisting the module, a better approach is likely to add

SUSPEND_MODULES="tpm_tis"

in

/etc/pm/config.d/unload_module

This too lets the system suspend and resume correctly.

[Bug 657386] [NEW] tpm_tis kernel module hangs on resume after suspend

2010-10-09 Thread fwyzard
Public bug reported:

When resuming after a suspend to ram, the computer lock up almost
immediately with a black screen (and no blinking caps lock).

If I rmmod the tpm_tis module, suspend/resume works fine multiple times
in a row.

This did not happen with the original Ubuntu 10.04 kernel - I don't remember
the version because I've done a full update to 10.10 now.
More recent 10.04 kernels gave me problems on suspend/resume, but I did not
debug the issue there, so I can't say if it was the same or not.

[Bug 413519] [NEW] module tpm_tis times out

2009-08-14 Thread fwyzard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-generic

Hi,
I'm using the latest "proposed" linux kernel with Jaunty:

fwyz...@katchoo:~$ uname -a
Linux katchoo 2.6.28-15-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 29 08:53:35 UTC 2009
x86_64 GNU/Linux

on an Asus M50V laptop, which has an integrated Infineon 1.2 TPM module.
Most TPM commands (from the tpm-tools package) fail with an I/O error due to a
time out in the tpm_tis.ko kernel module:

fwyz...@katchoo:~$ tpm_selftest -l debug
Tspi_Context_Create success
Tspi_Context_Connect success
Tspi_Context_GetTpmObject success
[  977.896097] tpm_tis 00:0e: Operation Timed out
Tspi_TPM_SelfTestFull failed: 0x1087 - layer=tddl, code=0087 (135), I/O
error
Tspi_Context_FreeMemory success
Tspi_Context_Close success

fwyz...@katchoo:~$ tpm_takeownership -l debug -z -y
Tspi_Context_Create success
Tspi_Context_Connect success
Tspi_Context_GetTpmObject success
Tspi_GetPolicyObject success
Tspi_Policy_SetSecret success
Tspi_Context_CreateObject success
Tspi_GetPolicyObject success
Tspi_Policy_SetSecret success
[  406.248070] tpm_tis 00:0e: Operation Timed out
Tspi_TPM_TakeOwnership failed: 0x1087 - layer=tddl, code=0087 (135), I/O
error
Tspi_Context_CloseObject success
Tspi_Context_FreeMemory success
Tspi_Context_Close success

Looking into the code of the tpm.ko and tpm_tis.ko modules
(drivers/char/tpm/tpm.c, drivers/char/tpm/tpm_tis.c), there are mixed
references to "msecs_to_jiffies" and "usecs_to_jiffies".
If I arbitrarily increase by x1000 some of the time out values using
"msecs_to_jiffies" everywhere instead of "usecs...", and recompile the modules
(using DKMS), the tpm-tools work fine.

[Bug 340519] [NEW] pidgin locks ksmserver

2009-03-10 Thread fwyzard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

Running the latest pidgin under the ksmserver session manager (KDE 4.2.1
and probably 4.2.0) locks it up: any other program trying to register
with the session manager will wait forever trying to read from the
SESSION_MANAGER socket.

A simple workaround is to run pidgin without session manager support:

  /usr/bin/env -u SESSIN_MANAGER pidgin

This way everything else works fine.

After some more debugging (trying applications one by one) I found the

ksmserver works fine until I launch pidgin, then it gets stuck, with the

Running "/usr/bin/env -u SESSION_MANAGER pidgin" instead of "pidgin" works fine
and does not create problems in the system.

[Bug 339875] [NEW] ksmserver stops answering on the SESSION_MANAGER socket

2009-03-09 Thread fwyzard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

After my KDE4 session has been open for a while (from some minutes to
one hour, it's not clear the exact amount of time needed to trigger the
bug) ksmserver stops answering to non-KDE applications.

I can see a simple example of this behaviour using vim.

ltrace hangs at:

  getenv("SESSION_MANAGER")  = "local/katchoo:/tmp/.ICE-unix/833"...
  IceAddConnectionWatch(0x51f570, 0x82cfa8, 0, 0, 82) = 1
  SmcOpenConnection(0, 0, 1, 0, 15

strace hangs similarily:

  socket(PF_FILE, SOCK_STREAM, 0) = 6
  uname({sys="Linux", node="katchoo", ...}) = 0
  connect(6, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path="/tmp/.ICE-unix/8336"...}, 21) = 0
  fcntl(6, F_SETFD, FD_CLOEXEC) = 0
  write(6, "\0\1\0\0\0\0\0\0"..., 8) = 8
  read(6,

At this point I'm only able to start new applications from a terminal where the
SESSION_MANAGER environment variable is not set.

[Bug 267504] Re: openafs-modules-source fails to build with 2.6.27-2 kernel in intrepid: asm/semaphore.h replaced with linux/semaphore.h

2008-09-08 Thread fwyzard
Actually, at first glance OpenAFS is not using at all
in kernels >= 2.6.16. For example, "src/rx/LINUX/rx_kmutex.h" has this
snippet:

#if LINUX_VERSION_CODE >= KERNEL_VERSION(2,6,16)
#include
#else
#include
#endif

typedef struct afs_kmutex {
#if LINUX_VERSION_CODE >= KERNEL_VERSION(2,6,16)
struct mutex mutex;
#else
struct semaphore sem;
#endif
int owner;
} afs_kmutex_t;

And in fact, to make the package build and work, one just need to do the
same in "src/afs/sysincludes.h" - change

#include
#if LINUX_VERSION_CODE >= KERNEL_VERSION(2,6,16)
#include
#endif

to

#if LINUX_VERSION_CODE >= KERNEL_VERSION(2,6,16)
#include
#else
#include
#endif

Patch attached.

[Bug 212309] [NEW] dmraid missing from live cd

2008-04-05 Thread fwyzard
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu 8.04 beta - live CD

At least as of 8.04 beta, the desktop live CD does not include "dmraid".
Since "fake" raid is becoming quite common, and dual booting is unfortunately
still too common, it would be useful to be able to install Ubuntu on a shared
"fake" raid volume.

This is currently quite straightforward provided one knows the necessary steps:
 - "apt-get install dmraid" to the live environment
 - "fdisk /dev/mapper/..." to one's desired partition structure
 - "mke2fs -j /dev/mapper/..." and mkswap "/dev/mapper/..." to build the
filesystems
 - correctly configure Ubiquity (currently there's a bug: /dev/mapper/...
partitions with a filesystem are listed twice)
 - "chroot /target" and "apt-get install dmraid" to the target installation

Since most of the support is already in place (grub installs nicely, for
example), it would be helpful if dmraid was included in the live cd:
this would remove the first and last steps from the list - which
incidentally are the only ones to require an internet connection :-p

[Bug 138256] Re: xserver-xorg-video-intel hangs the system when laptop lid is closed

2007-11-04 Thread fwyzard
Hi,
in the last couple of days I've tried all the options I could think off:
 - 3D enabled (running Compiz and GL screensavers) or disabled (switching to
MESA software implementation)
 - DRI/GLX on/off
 - DDC/DPMS on/off
 - ACPI/HAL on/off
 - xorg.conf's NoPM
 - CheckDevices on/off

I might have missed some weird combinations of all the above, but I tested a
lot... Nothing there prevented my system from hanging on lid close :-(
Peter's tst3 hasn't been very helpful in pinpointing the issue, as I didn't get
any messages in the Xorg.0.log file.

Looking for a way to "lie" to X and fake an external monitor, Peter then
pointed me to this patch by Raúl Sánchez Siles:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=11492&action=view

which forces the driver to detect an external monitor with the
(undocumented) option

Option  "ForceEnablePipeA""true"

Using this patched driver and option, I get a better behaviour: my
system happily blanks the monitor on lid closing, but does not hang.
Hitting the keyboard or moving the mouse unblanks the screen correctly.

However, I have a new problem: now my system locks on lid *opening*.

This time, disabling ACPI (sudo /etc/init.d/acpid stop) works around the
problem (rmmod video, disabling only the acpid socket, or using NoPM in
xorg.conf are not enough): opening the lid has no effect, the monitor is
still blanked but the system doest not hang. Keyboard/mouse do not
unblank the screen, either, but switching to a text console and back to
X works.

I've put a .deb package of the patched driver online if anyone is
interested in giving it a try (for the sourced just look into the same
directory):

[Bug 138256] Re: xserver-xorg-video-intel hangs the system when laptop lid is closed

2007-10-30 Thread fwyzard
Hi Peter,
I don't know if this helps, but if I connect an external monitor to the VGA
output, the lid button works properly, and using the "debug" intel driver I
see these lines at the end of Xorg.0.log

(II) PM Event received: Capability Changed
I830PMEvent: Capability change
(WW) intel(0): Disabling pipe 0 (4)
(WW) intel(0): Survived poke
(WW) intel(0): Disabling pipe 1 (4)

(WW) intel(0): Enabling pipe 1 (3)
(WW) intel(0): Survived poke
(WW) intel(0): Enabling plane 1 (3)
(WW) intel(0): Survived poke

with no external monitor attached, the system hangs (black screen but
for the mouse pointer) and after reboot in text mode I don't see
anything in the Xorg.0.log .

I'll try again without external monitor with the ACPI stuff you posted.

[Bug 138256] Re: xserver-xorg-video-intel hangs the system when laptop lid is closed

2007-10-27 Thread fwyzard
Back after some more testing. To summarise: my problem is not related to
hybernation or suspension, just closing the lid (or hitting the close lid
button) makes the system hang.
One funny thing is that the screen goes black (not blank) except for the mouse
pointer!

1.) If I plug in a second monitor to the VGA connector, the blanking on
lid close is disable, and this problem disappears. Is it possible to
forcibly disable the screen blanking even when no external monitor is
attached?

2.) I've tried xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.1.1-0ubuntu10~pcjc2.2_i386.deb
, but it doesn't help me: my system still lock as soon as I close the
lid.

3.) The system hangs even when I'm running only KDM, so it shouldn't be
related to Compiz & company.

How should I go on debugging ?

4.) /var/log/Xorg.0.log doesn't show anything after reboot (and before
launching X again) - all the messages are related to startup and present
way before the system lock up.

Re: [Bug 137307] Re: Xgl very slow, even when running only metacity (Intel i810)

2007-10-21 Thread fwyzard
I'm sure for me the switch from X to Xgl was due to some updates in
Gutsy development. Either the bug or the switch to Xgl happended around
2007.09.04 - probably the switch.
If Xgl is not the default in Gutsy, at least for the i810 driver, you
can close this as "won't fix" or something like that.
I haven't tried with the new intel driver.

[Bug 138256] xserver-xorg-video-intel hangs the system when laptop lid is closed

2007-09-08 Thread fwyzard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Hi,
I'm using a Dell Inspiron 510m, with an Intel 855GM:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated
Graphics Device (rev 02)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics
Device (rev 02)

Using the Xorg server with the xserver-xorg-video-i810 driver (and
915resolution to get 1400x1050) works well enough (compiz, decent 3d, xv
support).
Recently, I've tried the xserver-xorg-video-intel driver which works equally
well, with one exception: when I close the laptop lid, the screens my system
hangs: music stops playing, black screen except for the mouse pointer which is
stuck.

/var/log/messages doesn't show anything, and I don;t have the
corresponding Xorg.0.log any more since I switched back to i810. I'm
attaching my Xorg configurations for both i810 and intel drivers.
