[Bug 386272] Re: Computer won't boot without acpi=off option

2009-07-24 Thread Gareth
I am having the same problem but I have a modern motherboard. If I turn
ACPI off in BIOS or if I add the acpi=off boot parameter, I can boot
Jaunty but without one of the two it freezes at startup.

My motherboard is a Biostar TP35D2-A7 with an Intel Core 2 Duo E4500. I
have attached a CPU-Z report on my hardware specs if that helps.

[Bug 329833] [NEW] network manager: unable to enter wireless password

2009-02-15 Thread gareth
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Just upgraded from ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10, i.e. network manager 0.7

trying to log into a wireless network the 'authentication required' dialog
appears not to display properly.
There are no fields to enter username and password, and 'Connect' is grayed out.
This means I am unable to connect to network at all, and hence downgrading to
nm 0.6 or installing any potential patch is going to be tough.

Please see attached screenshot.

[Bug 106931] Re: Unable to detect ITE8212 RAID0 array

2008-08-07 Thread Gareth
I am a recent convert to linux and have only used Ubuntu and so far so
good.

However I would like to add my vote to have this issue resolved as I have a
Giga Byte motherboard with the IT8212 chip
on board. I have 4 drives connected in RAID 0+1 which I would dearly love to
use.

I am definitely not experienced enough to try building kernels so will
have to wait.

Lastly if this issue is resolved how do people like me find out ?

[Bug 112703] Re: tomboy sometimes starts with search dialog rather than as minimized applet

2008-08-09 Thread Gareth
I have had the same problem with Tomboy presenting the Search All Notes
dialog box when it is launched. I am currently running Tomboy 0.10.2 on
Ubuntu 8.04.1, Release: 8.04.

As part of the Global Bug Jam 2008 I've looked at this problem a bit
further and have the following information:-

The Search All Notes dialog box is presented every time Tomboy is
launched using the menu Applications -> Accessories -> Tomboy Notes.
The applet appears in the panel.

Previously I had also right-clicked on the menu item Applications ->
Accessories -> Tomboy Notes and clicked Add This Launcher To Panel.
Launching Tomboy from the panel using this launcher also resulted in
Search All Notes dialog box being presented every time. The applet
appears in the panel.

However (following the instructions in the help) by right-clicking on
the panel and then clicking on Add to Panel ... and selecting Tomboy
Notes, the applet is installed immediately in the panel and the Search
All Notes dialog box does not appear.

[Bug 391369] [NEW] ALSA 1.020 does not seem to recognise my sound system properly

2009-06-23 Thread Gareth
Public bug reported:

Have had problems with Ubuntu since I first tried it approx 18 months
ago with Hardy then Intrepid and then Jaunty with the Sound system.
Have finally thought I had a cure by installing Alsa 1.020. However, it
is still no quite correct. Headphones work fine but speakers still
sound very "tinny".

Have run all the usual tests that are recommended to check what is going
on. The end result that I have found is the following:

My system reports that it has a:

I am having the same problem but I have a modern motherboard. If I turn

Jaunty but without one of the two it freezes at startup.

have attached a CPU-Z report on my hardware specs if that helps.

[Bug 106931] Re: Unable to detect ITE8212 RAID0 array

2008-08-07 Thread Gareth
I am a recent convert to linux and have only used Ubuntu and so far so
good.

However I would like to add my vote to have this issue resolved as I have a
Giga Byte motherboard with the IT8212 chip
on board. I have 4 drives connected in RAID 0+1 which I would dearly love to
use.

I am definitely not experienced enough to try building kernels so will
have to wait.

Lastly if this issue is resolved how do people like me find out ?

Re: [Bug 329833] network manager: unable to enter wireless password

2009-09-03 Thread gareth
Hi Pedro,

Thanks for responding.
I will test this out when I download Karmic. In the meantime, I can report
that the problem doesn't occur in Jaunty, so I presume it will be ok in
Karmic too. (I was able to get Intrepid to work by forcing it to keep nm
0.6 .)

cheers

[Bug 367706] Re: Firefox and epiphany won't start. "Bus error"

2009-06-18 Thread Gareth Jones
Ditto.

This is Jaunty 9.04, but this time on x86-32 (Pentium 4 with hyper-
threading).

Firefox etc. used to work fine until I ran the updates this morning,
having been away from the office for a week without updating. The
system locked up during the kernel update (mouse not moving, Ctrl+Alt+F1
no use etc.). After magic SysRq-s,u,b, I ran dpkg --configure -a or
similar, as requested by Synaptic. dpkg failed with an error (attached,
as part of it at least relates to this bug).

Anyway, I have a system with no nVidia driver (kernel headers are
failing to install due to an executable format error, probably not
related), and no web access because the new xulrunner is giving a bus
error.

Attached is the Firefox strace, command as above.

[Bug 367706] Re: Firefox and epiphany won't start. "Bus error"

2009-06-18 Thread Gareth Jones
And here is the dpkg log. The first error is related to this bug I
think.

I've tried reinstalling the packages list at the end of the log from
Synaptic (after clearing the package cache), but that hasn't helped.

I'll provide more info if it'll help (but this is a work machine so I
can't do anything too drastic, or put off reinstallation or such too
long).

[Bug 367706] Re: Firefox and epiphany won't start. "Bus error"

2009-06-19 Thread Gareth Jones
I've already tried that here in Synaptic, but here's a log of apt-get's
output when run from a terminal. The problem persists.

I'm going to try a straight reinstall and update, because at the moment
I can't tell if this is a bug in the xulrunner package, or an artefact
of some sort of corruption due to the crash. I suspect there may be
multiple issues on this machine at the moment, so it'll be more useful
if I can separate them.

[Bug 367706] Re: Firefox and epiphany won't start. "Bus error"

2009-06-19 Thread Gareth Jones
Okay, a clean reinstall from the CD fixed all the errors. I then
installed the updates, no crash this time, and they all succeeded. The
latest Firefox/xulrunner now runs normally. /home is on a separate
partition and was not touched by the reinstall, so I should be using the
same user-configuration files as before.

In my case I think there must have been some file corruption, although
which file would apparently only affect xulrunner, and yet persist
across reinstalls of the Mozilla packages, I've no idea. The other
possibility is that some in-between updates that were skipped this time
somehow affected the update process, which could explain why some other
people are seeing the bus error.

Not sure if this info is of any use to anyone, but there you go.

I've just had the same thing happen in Ubuntu 8.10. The key was changed

doesn't work, it is just changed to a new random value. I've tried
restarting but to no avail.

[Bug 326113] [NEW] mouse lock up

2009-02-06 Thread Gareth Brown
Public bug reported:

Anywhere between a few minutes and a few hours, the mouse buttons stop
responding. The mouse itself keeps moving and remains visible.

The trigger is when moving the mouse between two xinerama screens. No
messages about this are logged in Xorg.0.log, messages, or any other log
file. In this state xev does not see any mouse events.

When X is restarted the mouse buttons are recognized again. Another
recovery is running a synergy server locally and connecting to it with
the client. Note that this only works when running synergyc from the
konsole in one of the xinerama screens. Doing the exact same thing in
the other screen has no effect.

Has been resolved by x.org here:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18668

but the patch will need compiling into binaries.

[Bug 54717] Re: No hibernate option when logging out

2006-08-25 Thread Gareth Bult
Ok, when the user is a "user", giving them the "hibernate" feature is a
really bad idea. This can be verified by the engineer presently on his
way to site ..

Letting users re-enable the hibernate feature using gconf-editor is
"bad". Is there a way to disable this at system level?

I'm assuming shutdown/reboot buttons are permission (/etc/group?) , any
reason why hiibernate isn't the same ?

[Bug 32275] Re: Ndiswrapper no longer works with Netgear MA111 in Dapper Flight CD 4 (worked in Breezy)

2006-06-16 Thread Gareth Holmes
The MA111 in breezy was fine when you blacklisted a couple of entries.
It also works in Dapper with same blacklisted modules.
I haven't blacklisted bcm43xx drivers and it is working, (although there is the
bug where it stops working after a while, system doesn't freeze but t inbound
traffic on wlan0 stops ), the only drivers I blacklisted were prism2_usb and
something else (I'll check when I get home)
Note that there are 2 versions of the MA111 usb dongle. I'm unsure if there is
a difference when using them with Ndiswrapper.

[Bug 32275] Re: Ndiswrapper no longer works with Netgear MA111 in Dapper Flight CD 4 (worked in Breezy)

2006-06-17 Thread Gareth Holmes
With those drivers blacklisted ndiswrapper seems to drop out after
passing a set amount of data. I've noticed there is no problem based on
the amount of time that the connection is active but on downloading a
large file inbound traffic halts after 10Mb or so.

To work around it temporarily:
Open System/Administration/Networking
Deactivate Wlan0
Unplug the MA111
Replug the MA111
Re-activate Wlan0

Synaptic etc. seem to pick up where they left off without reactivating wlan0
but firefox etc. require that last step.
I hope this helps a little until the bug is resolved.

[Bug 50307] Ndiswrapper & Netgear MA111 failing on Dapper

2006-06-19 Thread Gareth Holmes
Public bug reported:

Posted as a seperate bug after noting this behaviour in Bug #32275.

After settting up the Netgear MA111 on Dapper I have noticed that Ndiswrapper
is "filling up" after passing about 10mb or so of data in one go.
All works fine when checking email or surfing and it will run happily for days
without problems.

On moving larger amounts of data after about 10mb the data stops being received
on Wlan0 and ndiswrapper needs to be reloaded to continue.
Checked with the current ndiswrapper in Dapper and also Hobbsee's version 1.17,
both are showing the same behaviour.

To work around it temporarily:
Open System/Administration/Networking
Deactivate Wlan0
Unplug the MA111
Replug the MA111
Re-activate Wlan0

If anyone can give me a note of what other information would be
required/helpful I will be able to supply it.

[Bug 54717] Re: No hibernate option when logging out

2006-08-25 Thread Gareth Bult
OK,

This is a new installation, all user configs are LDAP based, each user
is a member of "users, plugdev, audio" and a couple of custom NT domains.
(definitely NOT adm)

The Shutdown and Reboot buttons do NOT appear.
The hibernate button DOES appear.

Not only that, but it allowed me to click on hibernate, thus shutting
down the server. I agree that this is not the issue described in the
head of this issue, however it seems to be a related issue and in a
multi-user environment, rather critical.

The server concerned was a twin Xeon dual-core with 4Gb of run running
LTSP connections .. giving "users" the hibernate option is a really bad
idea.

Cheers,
Gareth.
