Hello all,

process then I get the message that the upgrade can't continue and to
send a report through terminal using the command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-

[Bug 804896] Re: gnome-settings-daemon assert failure: gnome-settings-daemon: ../../src/xcb_io.c:140: dequeue_pending_request: Assertion `req == dpy->xcb->pending_requests' failed.

2011-09-02 Thread gib
I saw a similar message from 11.10 beta1 from a 9/2/2011 download. This
was a fresh install from a CD iso after the first boot. The message
looked something like this: Sorry, the system program gnome-settings-
daemon crashed . . .

[Bug 800632] Re: "Connected to internet" doesn't become green when I connect to a network

2011-09-02 Thread gib
Oh, work-around is to do the try it button instead of the install
directly . Then when running from CD connect and install.

[Bug 800632] Re: "Connected to internet" doesn't become green when I connect to a network

2011-09-02 Thread gib
I also ran into some trouble when installing 11.10. This was beta1 that
I downloaded 9/2/2011 evening. The install listed the install
requirements including "Connected to Internet". But it didn't provide a
chance to connect. The pop-up box with a message saying that wireless
networks were available would pop up a few times - but much to fast to
do anything with it.

[Bug 625989] Re: ubuntu install wireless screen asks for password for non-existent wireless connections

This appeared on a HP laptop: make and model: HP Pavilian dv9815nr.
Also the install stalled later when trying to copy file 2 of 6. One
member of the bug jam suggested that it was trying to download a file
which, of course, won't work when not connected.

[Bug 15495] Re: "Archive Manager" doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an "archive" is

2009-02-23 Thread gib
** Description changed:

A new user thinks "I need to create a zip file", and doesn't know how to do
it.
If you don't know that a zip file is an "archive", which many new users do
not,
then it's very difficult to tell how to create one. "Create archive" on the
Nautilus context menu, "Archive Manager" in the Applications menu, etc, are
all
meaningless. (This happened to me today when someone I know rang me for
technical support to ask how to create a zip file, and when I explained how,
he
  said "what's an archive?")

Suggested fixes (to be taken with a very large pinch of salt and replaced with
  better suggestions):
Change "Create archive" to "Create compressed file" on the context menu
Change "Archive Manager" to "Compressed Files" on the Applications menu (with
tooltip "Create and edit compressed files")

  http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=300655:
  http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=300655
+
+ Then won't you get questions like: "What's a compressed file"? Perhaps
+ some other wording may help such as: "Create a safe copy of a file".

[Bug 298599] Re: wireless connections fail on newly installed 8.10 versions following updates

2009-02-21 Thread gib
** Description changed:

On another system I had been running Ubuntu 8.10 x86_64, which after
using an external wireless card for a few updates was able to recognize
the Broadcom card and install the b43 driver needed. Since my system is
64-bit compatible, not a true 64-bit system, it was having a few
performance issues, and heating up to keep up as it drew more power. I
decided to install an i386 version to fix this.

With both Ubuntu 8.10, and Kubuntu 8.10 the b43 driver needed to my
system's integrated Broadcom card is not available for instalation
before an update is performed. However after the update (using the
external card from this old computer), and the required restart, the
system will recognize that the wireless network is present, but will not
establish a connection, even after completely re-entering all
  information for the connection.

I have not changed any settings myself, and I am not sure which update
might be causing the problem, which one was required for the b43 driver,
or whether it would fix the problem to load the driver and then install
  the rest of the updates.

Since I had done nothing but run the update and restart, there may be
others with a similar problem. I have a back up system to file the
report. I did not know how public they are, so I restricted my e-mail. I
don't want to hear back from everyone on a forum. I am simply a novice
at Linux myself (a few months use).

System Info (the system with the connection problem, not this 7-year old
  Dell):

  Model: HP Pavilion zd8000 (Notebook)
OS: Kubuntu 8.10 (No changes but an update)
  CPU: Pentium 630 i786, 3.0 Ghz Hyper-threaded
  RAM: 1 GB DDR2 533Mhz
Video: ATI x600 256 MB dedicated ram (Requires proprietary driver for full
function)
  Wireless: Integrated Broadcom 54Mbs 802.11 b/g (requires b43 driver)

  ProblemType: Bug
  Architecture: i386
  Date: Sun Nov 16 00:20:06 2008
  DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.04
  NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia
  Package: firefox-3.0 3.0.3+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1

wireless drivers (Atheros on HP):

[Bug 310140] Re: Atheros missing from Hardware Drivers after latest Intrepid Proposed

2009-02-21 Thread gib
** Description changed:

After Intrepid-proposed updates today which were prompted by update
manager (linux 2.6.27.11) Atheros driver is missing from Hardware
Drivers and wireless doesn't work. I have a DLink DWL-G650. This is my
first bug report, please advise if/how I can submit further information.
I've submitted this by stepping back a version via GRUB.

  1) Ubuntu 8.10 (proposed)
  2) not sure, I think it has something to do with upgrading to 2.6.27.11
  3) Connect to wireless network
  4) Drivers appear to be missing

Adding the relevant synaptics history below:
