I also ran into some trouble when installing 11.10. This was beta1 that I downloaded 9/2/2011 evening. The install listed the install requirements including "Connected to Internet". But it didn't provide a chance to connect. [Bug 15495] Re: "Archive Manager" doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an "archive" is
** Description changed: A new user thinks "I need to create a zip file", and doesn't know how to do it. If you don't know that a zip file is an "archive", which many new users do not, then it's very difficult to tell how to create one. "Create archive" on the Nautilus context menu, "Archive Manager" in the Applications menu, etc, are all meaningless. (This happened to me today when someone I know rang me for technical support to ask how to create a zip file, and when I explained how, he said "what's an archive?") Suggested fixes (to be taken with a very large pinch of salt and replaced with better suggestions): Change "Create archive" to "Create compressed file" on the context menu Change "Archive Manager" to "Compressed Files" on the Applications menu (with tooltip "Create and edit compressed files") http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=300655: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=300655 + + Then won't you get questions like: "What's a compressed file"? Perhaps + some other wording may help such as: "Create a safe copy of a file". ** Tags added: archive manager -- "Archive Manager" doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an "archive" is https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/15495 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 298517] Re: After install Ubuntu, my Windows network connection not functioning.
Ubuntu doesn't touch the Windows partition so this is not a Ubuntu bug. Marked as invalid. ** Changed in: ubuntu Status: New => Invalid -- After install Ubuntu, my Windows network connection not functioning. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/298517 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 298599] Re: wireless connections fail on newly installed 8.10 versions following updates
** Description changed: On another system I had been running Ubuntu 8.10 x86_64, which after using an external wireless card for a few updates was able to recognize the Broadcom card and install the b43 driver needed. Since my system is 64-bit compatible, not a true 64-bit system, it was having a few performance issues, and heating up to keep up as it drew more power. I decided to install an i386 version to fix this. With both Ubuntu 8.10, and Kubuntu 8.10 the b43 driver needed to my system's integrated Broadcom card is not available for instalation before an update is performed. However after the update (using the external card from this old computer), and the required restart, the system will recognize that the wireless network is present, but will not establish a connection, even after completely re-entering all information for the connection. I have not changed any settings myself, and I am not sure which update might be causing the problem, which one was required for the b43 driver, or whether it would fix the problem to load the driver and then install the rest of the updates. Since I had done nothing but run the update and restart, there may be others with a similar problem. I have a back up system to file the report. I did not know how public they are, so I restricted my e-mail. I don't want to hear back from everyone on a forum. I am simply a novice at Linux myself (a few months use). System Info (the system with the connection problem, not this 7-year old Dell): Model: HP Pavilion zd8000 (Notebook) OS: Kubuntu 8.10 (No changes but an update) CPU: Pentium 630 i786, 3.0 Ghz Hyper-threaded RAM: 1 GB DDR2 533Mhz Video: ATI x600 256 MB dedicated ram (Requires proprietary driver for full function) Wireless: Integrated Broadcom 54Mbs 802.11 b/g (requires b43 driver) ProblemType: Bug Architecture: i386 Date: Sun Nov 16 00:20:06 2008 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.04 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia Package: firefox-3.0 3.0.3+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1 PackageArchitecture: i386 ProcEnviron: PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: firefox-3.0 Uname: Linux 2.6.24-21-generic i686 + + Note some similar problems with upgrade to Ubuntu which do not work with wireless drivers (Atheros on HP): + bug 310140. -- wireless connections fail on newly installed 8.10 versions following updates https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/298599 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
