[Bug 160862] Re: users-admin (System-Administration-Users and Groups) overwrites group file

2010-06-26 Thread greno
I am running lucid with system-tools-backends at 2.9.4 and am seeing errors
trying to run any of:
Time and Date
Users and Groups

example:
$ users-admin

(users-admin:12353): Liboobs-WARNING **: There was an unknown error
communicating with the backends: Failed to execute program
/lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-launch-helper: Success
$ gksu users-admin
(users-admin:12389): Liboobs-WARNING **: There was an unknown error
communicating with the backends: Failed to execute program
/lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-launch-helper: Success
$ gksudo users-admin
(users-admin:12413): Liboobs-WARNING **: There was an unknown error
communicating with the backends: Failed to execute program
/lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-launch-helper: Success

I checked and /etc/groups did not appear to be overwritten, but the
commands still do not work either from the menu or the command-line.

[Bug 295405] Re: fails to run lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-launch-helper

2010-06-26 Thread greno
Dennis, the bug you pointed to does not say that the user and group id
need to be the same. It says that there are two groups using the same
id which causes the error. It is perfectly allowable to have a user id
and group id be different from each other.

[Bug 585110] Re: vmbuilder 0.11.3 fails to find ec2-init file

2010-05-25 Thread greno
Thanks Scott. I just checked that branch and it looks like it has
everything I need.

Would it be possible for Ubuntu vmbuilder team to quickly pull together
a 0.11.4 release for Karmic that would have support for 'Lucid' and
'Maverick'? That way we could also downgrade to it in Lucid until the
0.12 branch can have EC2 support added.

[Bug 584977] [NEW] vmbuilder 0.12.3 fails to create EC2 images

2010-05-24 Thread greno
Public bug reported:

Description: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Release: 10.04

python-vm-builder-ec2:
  Installed: 0.12.3-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 0.12.3-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 0.12.3-0ubuntu1 0

On Lucid after installing python-vm-builder-ec2 we cannot create, bundle,
upload EC2 images using --ec2 flag.

sudo vmbuilder xen ubuntu --suite=lucid --ec2 ...

When I run vmbuilder with --ec2 flag, I just get this message:

Usage: vmbuilder hypervisor distro [options]

vmbuilder: error: no such option: --ec2

The --ec2 flag works on earlier versions such as 0.11 but is not working
on 0.12.

** Description changed:

I added 'lucid' as a valid suite name under ubuntu/plugins for 0.11.3 so
I could create lucid images and when I run vmbuilder it gets right to
the very end and then has a problem with finding ec2-init files.

When creating a Lucid image for EC2, vmbuilder cannot find ec2-init
  files:

[Bug 496654] Re: Ubuntu Server 9.10 (karmic): xenner: depends on non-existent library

2009-12-15 Thread greno
There appears to be some type of apparmor profile issue between libvirt
and xenner. Xenner is expected to be a valid emulator callable by
libvirt.

Here's what I see even after unloading apparmor:

Even with apparmor unloaded the kernel still loads a profile, denies
access and then removes the profile. Maybe this is some type of
apparmor bug or a kernel bug. Or maybe there needs to be an apparmor
profile setting in the xenner package.

Since ubuntu decided to follow upstream and incorporate KVM
virtualization by default the easiest way to run Xen domU images is by
using Xenner. It is important that a working Xenner package continue to
be available so that users are not forced to migrate to a full Xen dom0
kernel/initrd in order to run Xen domU images. Xen is still the current
preferred cloud hypervisor used by ec2 and users like to test their
images locally.

It would also be good if Xenner could be updated to 0.47. There have
been a number of serious bugs fixed between 0.41 and 0.47.

I just checked an F12 machine to see where fedora was on this:
# yum list xen xenner
Available Packages
xen.x86_64 3.4.1-5.fc12

xenner.x86_64 0.47-3.fc12

So fedora is runnng xen-3.4 and xenner-0.47. I don't know whether
xenner-0.47 depends on xen-3.4. Something that would need investigated.

So this missing shared lib is in libxen3-dev which is not a dependency

The dependency on libxen3-dev needs to be added to xenner in order to
get the missing libxenctrl.so shared lib installed. And this needs to
be part of the bug fix. The package is broken otherwise.

xenner/karmic upgradeable from 0.41-1ubuntu5 to 0.41-1ubuntu5.1~sevenmachines1

It keeps trying to perform the upgrade:
$ sudo apt-get upgrade xenner
...
The following packages will be upgraded:
xenner
...

but fails with the same libxenctrl.so shared library error as I posted
above.

[Bug 487689] Re: Ubuntu Server 9.10 (karmic): grub2: error: invalid magic number

2009-11-28 Thread greno
I am using a 200GB VM HDD and my Karmic install in the VM was amd64. I
just happened to run across this bug report for Debian which shows same
invalid magic number error and talks about Bochs BIOS patch using 32bit
computation.

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=532202#10

I wonder if that patch is in KVM Bochs BIOS? Or if there is still 128GB
limitation. And would that cause the magic number error?

[Bug 487689] [NEW] Ubuntu Server 9.10 (karmic): grub2: error: invalid magic number

2009-11-24 Thread greno
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub

I installed Ubuntu Server 9.10 (karmic) using text-based installer into
a KVM VM. During installation I provided console args after quiet
splash so that a serial console would work. After installation the
hypervisor reboots the VM and reconnects me to domain console. There is
no console output.

I boot the VM using the 9.10 iso file and enter rescue mode. The kernel
args are fine in grub.cfg but upstart is not configured for a serial
console so I configure one. Create a /etc/default/grub file with serial
console definitions. Do a 'update-grub' and a 'grub-install /dev/sda'
and exit. set hd as boot dev and reboot. The serial console now works
but I'm getting this message on console:

error: invalid magic number

  Failed to boot default entries.

Press any key to continue...

Something is obviously wrong with grub2. Is there any workaround to get this
system booting?

[Bug 487689] Re: Ubuntu Server 9.10 (karmic): grub2: error: invalid magic number

2009-11-24 Thread greno
I retried rerunning update-grub and grub-install again. No change.
Still cannot boot.

9.10 is looking like a very bad release. Postings of all kinds of
serious problems. X freezes, blank screens, no-boot scenarios, no
serial consoles in text installs, lots of upgrade issues, broken kvm
guests, ... I think I'm going to write this release off as 'toxic'.

[Bug 390395] Re: rescue cd shell not useable

2009-11-19 Thread greno
Yes, I just encountered this headache. Need a real shell in rescue
where you can use PgUp/PgDn to scroll back/forth and tab completion and
history on arrow up.
