[Bug 604847] Re: Firefox menu bar does not respond at all
I had the same problem, starting today. What also didn't work was searching in the bookmarks while typing in the address bar, the Options button in the NoScript message bar, ctrl-D to add this page to my bookmarks. Rebooting did not solve the problem, until after a reboot starting Firefox first initiated an update of the NoScript add-in. I don't know if there is a connection, but everything seems normal now. [Bug 225361] Re: Superuser cannot access ~/.gvfs folder when mounted
That ("user others than the one who mounted the fs can't access it, including root") is not completely true. I have two systems (not connected to eachother), both running Ubuntu 8.04. On one of them I have one user, created during install, and member of sudoers. On this system I use a script that uses sudo rsync to create backups. I never get errors. On the other system I have three users, let's call them A, B and C. A was created during install, and is member of sudoers (and as such is comparable to the only user on the first system). Here I am using the same backup script, and here I always get permission denied errors accessing /home/A/.gvfs. I do NOT get errors when the script tries to access /home/B/.gvfs or /home/C/.gvfs! In fact, user A can do a sudo -i, and then cd to /home/B/.gvfs, but not cd to his own /home/A/.gvfs. So it looks like there IS a bug somewhere, and it would be nice to see it fixed. -- Superuser cannot access ~/.gvfs folder when mounted https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/225361 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I tried installing 8.10a5 in a VirtualBox 2.0.2 VM. That went ok (VM boots), up to where I had to install the guest additions, to enable USB in the VM. Then I tried the same in a VMware Server 1.0.7 VM. That also went ok (VM boots), but installing the VMware Tools failed. I then burned the iso on a disk and booted my physical system from it. [Bug 217057] Re: I can't use accents in guests installed on VirtualBox (Hardy)
With the right Ctrl key (the default 'host key' as VirtualBox calls it) you are just switching between capturing and not capturing the keyboard inside the virtual machine. VirtualBox's keyboard handling is buggy, and the dead keys problem is just one of them. Another one: not capturing the keyboard really means 'capture some keys in the guest, but let the host handle some other keys'. Thanks to this bug you can use the dead keys in your guest: switch off keyboard capturing, and suddenly the guest handles the dead keys the way it should have done with the keyboard capturing switched on. To add to the confusion: with keyboard capture switched off, keys like alt-Tab and alt-F4 are handled by the host, while Tab is handled by the guest... are you still there? So this is a VirtualBox problem, not an Ubuntu problem. -- I can't use accents in guests installed on VirtualBox (Hardy) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/217057 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 227424] [NEW] Wacom Graphire 1 no longer works in Hardy
Public bug reported: I have a Wacom Graphire 1, which worked perfectly well with Dapper, Edgy, Feisty and Gutsy. After upgrading to Hardy it doesn't anymore. After every time I log in, or switch to tty1-tty6 and back to tty7, the mouse pointer is frozen. I then have to unplug and reconnect the tablet (USB connected). The pen however loses it absolute positioning mode, and whenever the pen is out of reach of the tablet, the mouse pointer moves to the upper left corner of the screen. [Bug 160738] Re: context menu positioned next to mouse pointer when using keyboard in stead of next to keyboard position (nautilus, gnome menus, ...)
I would also like to see this fixed. The menu location should logically (IMO) be tied to the object it will act upon (where the focus of the user's attention is), not to the (arbitrary position of the) mouse pointer. If the context menu is activated by using the right mouse key, both locations are (more or less) the same. If the menu is activated by the menu key, the mouse pointer can be in another location. [Bug 157650] Re: ATA port freezes randomly
No, even worse. The frequency of the errors was so high that it was again impossible to do work on the computer. I decided to try Hardy Heron Alpha 1, to see if a newer kernel would solve the problem. (I read somewhere that 2.6.23 might do that.) I tried the upgrade twice, and twice the ata errors made the upgrade freeze, and leave the system in a more or less unusable state. First time I could recover it, using a backup. Second time even that would not work. So I tried a fresh install of Hardy Heron. But the installer used dialogs that were larger than the display, so the next/back/cancel/finish buttons were invisible. So I just finished a fresh install of Gutsy... I now have a proper startup and shutdown screen with progress bar (and with text if I select that option in startupmanager). tty1-6 have the proper font, but an incorrect resolution (probably 640x480, it's 80x30 characters). I think I will leave it like this, until the Ubuntu guys come up with a real solution. Loading modules fbcon and vesafb lead to a bunch of green blocks on a black and unresponsive tty1. Loading modules fbcon and vga16fb lead to a low resolution tty1, with an ugly font, and a fucked up shutdown screen, also at 640x480, with colors so bad that you can hardly see what's there. In the mean time I have seen some very strange things happening, like the X screen getting blank while loading the desktop. The monitor power light starts blinking. After pressing a key or moving the mouse the screen returns (and the monitor shows "digital" for a few seconds, so there really was no signal). -- tty[1-6] are active but display nothing in Gutsy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/129910 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 157650] Re: ATA port freezes randomly
Tonight had to reboot 5 times before I could login. The other 4 times the system froze before that point. I would classify this bug as critical (if I could). The past 6 months I spent more time recovering from these freezes, reinstalling Ubuntu, than I spent doing real work (and that's what I have my computer for)! -- ATA port freezes randomly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/157650 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 157650] ATA port freezes randomly
Public bug reported: My system has random freezes, sometimes during boot, sometimes after a few minutes, sometimes after a few hours. Everytime there are ata port errors like "ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x1c0 action 0x2 frozen" (see logs). I had this with Feisty, but even after a fresh Gutsy install the problem doesn't disappear. I tried three different motherboards, two different harddisks, on the current motherboard two different SATA-controllers. When the system freezes, I sometimes can continue after a minute or so. Sometimes I have to reboot using either the reset button or the alt- sysreq-SUB sequence. Sometimes after a reboot Grub is loading, and the gives a "Read error". Usually after a fresh install the system runs fine for about two weeks (only running a few hours a day, then shut down). The frequency of freezes then increases up to a point where it becomes unuseable. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- ATA port freezes randomly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/157650 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 129910] Re: tty[1-6] are active but display nothing in Gutsy
Tried to change the resolution to 1280x1024 by editing usplash.conf and adding vga=794 to the kernel boot parameters, and generating a new initrd image. During boot the Ubuntu logo screen disappeared, and was replaced by a black screen with a flashing cursor in the upper left corner. After a while the login screen appeared. The tty1-6 failed to show text. Restored the initrd image, and all is working again, at low resolution that is... -- tty[1-6] are active but display nothing in Gutsy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/129910 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 129910] Re: tty[1-6] are active but display nothing in Gutsy
I did a fresh install of Gutsy on my AMD/nVidia system. I can access tty1-6 now, but the font is huge. I am using the nvidia-glx-new restricted drivers, which were installed via the Restricted Manager. I will try to change the resolution to get a smaller font in the tty's, and see if that causes the problem. The fresh install did solve another problem: swat is working again (as it was under Dapper and Edgy, but never under Feisty), and so is hddtemp (but that also worked after the upgrade). So Gutsy has its good points ;-) -- tty[1-6] are active but display nothing in Gutsy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/129910 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 129910] Re: tty[1-6] are active but display nothing in Gutsy
I am experiencing the problem on two different systems: one (AMD Athlon64 X2) with nVidia restricted drivers, and one (Intel Pentium IV) with the i810 non-restricted drivers. So the restricted drivers are not the (only) cause of this bug. -- tty[1-6] are active but display nothing in Gutsy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/129910 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 129910] Re: tty[1-6] are active but display nothing in Gutsy
ardchoille, Sorry for the accusation. You're not to blaim, I overreacted in the heat of the moment. Real problem here is that "just users" are the ones that respond here. Nothing from the official Ubuntu side. Why can't they at least inform us about the status of the bug? Workarounds reported here sometimes contradict: some people say the problem is solved by adding vga=791 to the boot line, others say the problem is solved by removing it.
Thanks ardchoille, this: sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx && sudo nvidia-glx-config enable && sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg really fucked up my system. Ended with a message that my config was corrupt and I should recheck the MD5sum? Result: display adapter: no longer recognised, monitor: no longer recognised, carefully configured Wacom tablet settings: gone. Thank God I had a backup xorg.conf. Why can't someone (at Canonical I presume?) come up with a real solution to this buggy product they call "Gutsy Gibbon"? Workarounds by users that work for some, but don't for others can't be the way to go. Not if you want Ubuntu to become a serious operating system. (Off-topic: this isn't the only problem: sound is gone since the upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy, and the random freezes of the SATA-controller are still there.) -- tty[1-6] are active but display nothing in Gutsy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/129910 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 109403] Re: ICH4 controller software suspend broken in Feisty (Thinkpad T40p)
I tried adding the piix driver (without explicitly removing the ata_piix, should I have done that as well?), on one of the two previous boards, it didn't solve the problem. Also tried things like noapic, acpi=off, without result. I thought the piix driver is for Intel systems? I am using AMD with nVidia chipset. BTW: I never put my system in sleep mode (it is a desktop system), and the problem frequently occurs during boot or login. -- ICH4 controller software suspend broken in Feisty (Thinkpad T40p) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109403 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 109403] Re: ICH4 controller software suspend broken in Feisty (Thinkpad T40p)
Output of 'lspci -vv | grep 00:1f.1' is empty. Attached is output of 'lspci -vv'. Why did you specifically ask for 00:1f.1? The problem also occurs if I connect the harddisk to the SiI3124 controller, instead of the nForce590 (both are onboard controllers).
