This happens often when my laptop even with power supply left alone for a while for the screens to get turn off. When I log back -in or press a key to get to login screen, the second monitor never turns on. I have to unplug and plug the monitor DVI cable to get the monitor to show the screen. I have verified that Ubuntu 14.04 thinks that both the monitors are on even when just my laptop screen it working and external monitor is all blank ( no signal ). This is annoying and specially happens while working on dual monitors with my laptop. Its has intel hd4000 builtin graphics. * password input will be disabled on laptop screen but works on attached monitor sometimes. * other times, the password input is disabled on both and then I have to hard reboot. * happens after I locked the screen myselft or got locked due to time Next time I will try unity --replace and hope it restores my work / windows. Some updates : Looks like the volume and other shortcut keys in Ubuntu are handled by some core unity session or process which also handles keys like ctrl + alt + l ( lock screen ) other keys too. I am not a big fan of unity and the buggy global menu so I stopped using unity and thats what caused my keys to stop working. If I use plain vanilla unity shell then all keys work perfectly but that creates some annoying issues of dealing with buggy global menu and slow dash ( even with i7 + 6GB ram machine. ) Workaround : Install CCM ( Compiz Config Manager ) then enable Commands module plugin then add following commands to your commands list : * Increase volume : /usr/bin/pactl set-sink-volume 0 -- +20% * Decrease volume : /usr/bin/pactl set-sink-volume 0 -- -20% * Mute : /usr/bin/pactl set-sink-mute 0 toggle * Lock screen : bash -c xset dpms force off; DISPLAY=:0 gnome-screensaver-command -l Then using same module shortcuts, map them to whichever keys and it works perfectly ( and always even after boot ). I use Synapse tool which is mapped to my Meta ( Windows) keys and I use it to launch all my apps ( much faster than unity dash ). I have freshly installed Ubuntu 12.10 64bit version and the problem seems to be happening after reboot. Same issue on my Lenovo Thhinkpad X1 carbon. The usb disk creator takes 100% of CPU along with its helper.
