[Bug 771474] [NEW] udev name/symlink rules give permission denied error

2011-04-26 Thread harvest316
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: udev

I was just trying to create a rule to create a /dev/lirc symlink from the
appropriate
/dev/input/event* but kept running into permissioning issues.

The following udev rules (both give the same result) when placed in
/etc/udev/rules.d/10-local.rules:

KERNEL=="event*",ATTRS{vendor}=="0x14f1",SYMLINK+="lirc"
#KERNEL=="event*",ATTRS{vendor}=="0x14f1",NAME="lirc"

...should produce a symbolic link at /dev/lirc to the pertinent
/dev/input/event* (but don't) when I run:
$ sudo restart udev

...but they do produce "permission denied" errors when I run:
$ udevadm test $(udevadm info -q path -n /dev/input/event3)
(assuming it's event3 today)

...however running as root creates the symlink just fine:
$ sudo udevadm test $(udevadm info -q path -n /dev/input/event3)

They are however picked up as the same udevadm output reads:
"udev_rules_apply_to_event: LINK 'lirc' /etc/udev/rules.d/10-local.rules:1"

BTW, This rule should do effectively the same thing but fails silently,
presumably for the same permissioning reason:
KERNEL=="event*",ATTRS{vendor}=="0x14f1",RUN+="sudo ln -fs /dev/input/%k
/dev/lirc"

I've applied a workaround by hacking /etc/init.d/lirc as per
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/LIRC#Troubleshooting but it's frightfully
inelegant. Would like to get the udev rule working

[Bug 637930] Re: Maverick: Wireless is disabled until network-manager restart

2010-09-15 Thread harvest316
I've attached the syslog as requested, but bizarrely, the
network-manager restart doesnt fix it now, like it did before. I cant
remember but I might have run update-manager last night so that could
have changed things. Nothing in synaptic's history though. (Does
update-manager keep a different history file?)

But the problem is different than I originally understood. It's
actually just the "Enable Wireless" option on the right-click menu
that's disabled. The wireless still works just fine.

When I use dbus-send to turn it on and off by hand I can see wireless
networks on the left-click menu of the network-manager icon when its on,
and of course none when it's off, but the "Enable Wireless" option is
still greyed out on the right-click menu:

dbus-send --system --type=method_call
--dest=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager
org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties.Set
string:org.freedesktop.NetworkManager string:WirelessEnabled
variant:boolean:false

What more can I provide you with?

PaulH

[Bug 637930] [NEW] Maverick: Wireless is disabled until network-manager restart

2010-09-14 Thread harvest316
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Since upgrading to Maverick, when I boot up and right click on my
network-manager icon in the notification area, there is no "Enable
Wireless" option, as if it cannot detect the presence of my wireless
card. This is resolved by issuing the command:

sudo service network-manager restart

But of course it needs a more permanent fix.

[Bug 516132] Re: modem-manager: Got failure code 100: Unknown error

2010-07-02 Thread harvest316
Fixed by following instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingModemmanager/ (upgraded everything in
the repository)

The NM_PPP_DEBUG revealed an error after upgrading to daily, in
/tmp/nm.log.txt

/usr/sbin/pppd: /usr/lib/pppd/2.4.5/nm-pppd-plugin.so: cannot open shared
object file: No such file or directory
/usr/sbin/pppd: Couldn't load plugin /usr/lib/pppd/2.4.5/nm-pppd-plugin.so

Fixed by temporarily downgrading to the standard version, grabbing a
copy of nm-pppd-plugin.so, then going back to the nightly version.
Happy days!

[Bug 293970] Re: bonobo-activation-server : could not associate with desktop session

2009-07-10 Thread harvest316
I get the same in /var/log/messages, except it results in a system
freeze. Ctrl-Alt-F1 to change to console doesnt work. Only solved by a
hard reset. Happens several times a week on my Dell Dimension 5100 with
USB KVM. This is the standard pattern:

Jul 4 09:43:08 dell5100 bonobo-activation-server (...): could not associate
with desktop session: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-x8SPI7a7nG:
Connection refused
Jul 4 09:43:15 dell5100 kernel: [98471.116403] nfsd: last server has exited,
flushing export cache
Jul 4 09:43:15 dell5100 exiting on signal 15
Jul 4 09:44:10 dell5100 syslogd 1.5.0#5ubuntu3: restart.

Sometimes I get this bdl_pos_adj message before:

Jul 1 06:49:23 dell5100 kernel: [ 599.843086] hda-intel: IRQ timing
workaround is activated for card #0. Suggest a bigger bdl_pos_adj.
Jul 1 06:49:25 dell5100 bonobo-activation-server (...): could not associate
with desktop session: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-kWRagllOEu:
Connection refused
Jul 1 06:49:29 dell5100 kernel: [ 606.156863] nfsd: last server has exited,

Jul 1 06:49:31 dell5100 exiting on signal 15
Jul 1 06:50:25 dell5100 syslogd 1.5.0#5ubuntu3: restart.

Happens far too often, so it's a real pain. Would pay to see this
fixed.

[Bug 306302] [NEW] lirc usage in mythtv causes excessive gnome-screensaver usage, slows to a crawl

2008-12-08 Thread harvest316
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythtv

When pressing remote buttons to navigate in mythtv, mythtv takes 2-3
seconds to respond, causing very high cpu usage in gnome-screensaver.
Kill gnome-screensaver and it works fine again.

Was temporarily solved when I changed mythtv to use Qt4 instead of
OpenGL, but the problem reappeared after next reboot. Current fix is to
kill gnome-screensaver after each boot.

 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 224009] Re: lircd.conf not working with include

2008-11-18 Thread harvest316
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 213549 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/213549

My error is:
---
lircd-0.8.3[11306]: config file contains no valid remote control definition
---

Which occurs when my /etc/lirc/lircd.conf contains:

#Callouts to two custom lircd.conf.* files generated by irrecord:
include /home/harvest/.lirc/lircd.conf.Hauppauge_Nova_T_500
include /home/harvest/.lirc/lircd.conf.Epson_EMP_TW700

But the error disappears, and irw and irsend functionality resumes, when
I remove the include statements paste the contents of both custom
lircd.conf.* files into /etc/lirc/lircd.conf

Henceforth, include is not fixed. Bug may not be a duplicate.

[Bug 206899] [NEW] gnome-screensaver slideshow freezes mid-fade, leaving ghost of previous image

2008-03-25 Thread harvest316
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

When gnome-screensaver is set to the Pictures Folder theme (personal-
slideshow.desktop), the slideshow appears to freeze mid-fade on every
3rd or 4th transition, leaving a ghost of the previous image until the
next image is displayed. Otherwise, it's fully responsive. I'd be
happy if I could just disable the fade transitions so it does a straight
cut, but /usr/lib/gnome-screensaver/gnome-screensaver/slideshow doesnt
appear to provide said option.

I'm on hardy, kernel 2.6.24-12-386, with gnome-screensaver
2.21.6-0ubuntu3. It's a bog standard Dell Dimension 5100 except for a
GeForce 7300GS and Hauppauge TV card.

But the thing is this problem also existed on gutsy.

I do run mythbackend on this box, but it's rarely doing much. My
processor sits at around 11% utilisation normally, but these freezes
happen nearly all the time.
