[Bug 1750937] Re: 4.4.0-116 Kernel update on 2/21 breaks Nvidia drivers (on 14.04 and 16.04)

This does not only affect the NVIDIA modules, but seems to affect all
kernel modules built on the system itself. (Meaning all DKMS-built
modules and for example VMWare Workstation/Player modules)

[Bug 1460782] Re: public key listing fails if ECC subkey uses SHA512

2016-02-29 Thread Hanno Stock (hefe_bia)
This affects 14.04 LTS. This is fixed in 2.0.23 according to debian bug

Since this makes gpg2 completely crash when such a key is in the
keyring, I guess this should be fixed for the LTS version.

[Bug 702811] [NEW] CMake creates wrong compiler options when an include path ends in "framework"

2011-01-14 Thread Hanno Stock (hefe_bia)
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cmake

Description:Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Release:10.04

Affected versions: 2.8.0-5ubuntu1 and 2.8.1-4~lucid1

When a path "some/path/someframework" (the offending part being the
suffix "framework") is in INCLUDE_DIRECTORIES cmake generates a compiler
option "-Fsome/path/someframework" instead of
"-Isome/path/someframework".

-F is a Mac only option.

This is due to a too vague regex in findQt4.cmake.

It has been fixed upstream in commit
35b91ac5c0d781bcea5d013bcd62fa11c6841d6f.

I think this is quite an important bug as there might be a lot of cases
where some include path ends in "framework".

[Bug 292047] Re: middle-button scroll disabled on trackpoint

2009-03-08 Thread Hanno Stock (hefe_bia)
I have found the problem with the backported version of the evdev driver and
fixed it. You can download the updated driver
from my ppa (https://launchpad.net/~hanno-stock/+archive/ppa).
I also have attached a bzr branch with my changes.

Note: This is a backported driver from Jaunty. You should only install
it if you need the added functionality as it might introduce other
issues. However it runs fine on my amd64 Intrepid system so far.

(You might still need the .fdi file mentioned above.)

I tested the version from jaunty and it seems to work there. (I

so this is not a solution.) Can somebody confirm with a Live-CD?

However I could not find a single commit upstream that specifically
addresses the issue. Upstream log can be found here:

Ok. Then I don't know why it suddenly works for me... I had
intrepid-proposed enabled some time ago because of standby issues. But
my kernel is from the normal updates.
Maybe I have some other libs still in a newer version from proposed.

Scrolling in virtualized environments is dependent on the virtual
hardare and how the virtualization environment translates events from
the host system.
Example: With VMWare Workstation I have scrolling via wheel on an
external mouse under Ubuntu and XP as a host with XP as guest, however
scrolling via touchpad only works using Ubuntu as host.
(But this is an entirely different topic not related to this bug...)

Greetings,

Hanno

[Bug 114565] Re: native Garmin-USB no longer working

2009-02-01 Thread Hanno Stock (hefe_bia)
Just as a reminder: The plugdev group is now deprecated. (This means the
solutions suggested here might not work in the future.)

I found this link on how to add PolicyKit / Hal rules for a new class of
USB devices: http://osdir.com/ml/fedora-devel-list/2009-01/msg00227.html

I could not find any info on whether there is already a name/namespace
reserved for GPS devices. I consider working out the details in the
future, but don't have the time at the moment. (Maybe in a few weeks)

Maybe someone could clarify where such new rules should go (which
package) or whether a new package should be created on which other
packages that use the Garmin GPS via USB could depend.

[Bug 276943] Re: Resume from suspend doesn't work on the Mobile 4 Series chipsets

configuration caused my system to still crash on resume:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Option "DynamicClocks" "true"
Option "NoDri" "true"

After deleting this configuration (I had it for power saving) suspend /
resume works, except after a login / logout I have the same screen

wrong resolution.

I also noticed that the system seems to draw more power and the fan is

2009-01-19 Thread Hanno Stock (hefe_bia)
I can confirm this bug on a Thinkpad T400 (fresh Intrepid system). The
symptoms are exactly as described above.

Enabling the proposed-updates repository did NOT fix the bug for me! The
symptoms stay the same. I can resume from suspend when I deactivate all but one
core before suspend, however the system freezes as soon as I enable the second
core again.

[Bug 251491]

2009-01-12 Thread Hanno Stock (hefe_bia)
Here are my Xorg.0.log and xorg.conf.

By the way: I have no problems with a PCI x16 Geforce 6200 LE in the
same system when I disable the 8200.

Tests were made without the 6200 card installed to make sure it is not a
hardware conflict.

[Bug 251491] Re: random crashes using nvidia 8200 chipset and nvidia drivers on hardy

2009-01-12 Thread Hanno Stock (hefe_bia)
I can confirn this bug on an ASUS M3N78-VM board with integrated GeForce
8200 graphics on Intrepid.

However I do not only have random crashes - the system crashes every time when
firefox displays its "Master Password" dialog. (Sometimes even when firefox
starts)
The screen gets all messed up and the system becomes unresponsive. Logging in
via ssh and reloading nvidia module and restarting X solves the problem.

I tried version 173 and 177 of the nvidia driver. Even with a prevu
build of the 180 driver from jaunty it does not work.

I have exactly the same problem. You might try other values close to 254
and monitor your load cycles. Maybe you're lucky and the drive firmware
has a setting where the time until the heads are parked is moderately
high so parking will occur less often.
Otherwise I would complain to the drive manufacturer or laptop
manufacturer. (I think one can expect a hard drive to be operable with
constant but little disk activity without wearing off way before the
expected life span...)

Regards, Hanno

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2008-12-28 Thread Hanno Stock (hefe_bia)
Does this actually have to do with Ubuntu accessing the disk for
*read/write* or may this be related to some other kind of polling?
(Temperature, etc.)

I ran iotop on my laptop in AC mode with hdparm -B 199. While iotop
showed no disk activity at all, frequent load/unload cycles occured.

I also noticed that running smartctl -a when the heads are parked the
heads are unparked immediately. Can I somehow monitor hard disk activity
besides read/write activity? (For example SMART polling, etc.)

FYI: I am running 8.10 amd64 edition. I am already using the fdi file

seems to ignore them. Might this be a 64bit only problem?

[Bug 223812] Re: [hardy] Regression: powernowd no longer works with some chipsets

2008-12-01 Thread Hanno Stock (hefe_bia)
Here is the updated debdiff for Jaunty.

I removed the g-p-m stuff and updated the package description. Should
apply to intrepid package also, since it is the same version.

Gatopeich: While I agree that it is somewhat misleading to hijack the
powernowd package, changing that is beyond the scope of this bug report.
I guess a blueprint might be better suited for a bigger change in how
cpu frequency scaling mechanisms are selected. You'd have to introduce a
meta-package or some other kind of high level cpu frequency scaling
package so it would install or activate the needed mechanism (powernowd
or ondemand governor), depending on what hardware is in use. (After all
it is supposed to work out of the box without user intervention for
every hardware that supports it.)

[Bug 248521] Re: vmmouse seems to register incorrect x, y values for mouseclick

2008-11-05 Thread Hanno Stock (hefe_bia)
Hi,

I got the same error as Helge with the new package. This is VMWare Workstation
6.5 on Ubuntu 8.04, Intrepid guest.
Error occurs with and without paravirtualization enabled. VMWare Tools are
installed on the guest.

Greetings, Hanno.

[Bug 248521] Re: vmmouse seems to register incorrect x, y values for mouseclick

2008-10-31 Thread Hanno Stock (hefe_bia)
Hi,

I can confirm that the 1ubuntu5 version improved things. Previously all clicks
where registered at the lower right corner of the screen, now it seems movement
of the mouse is registered by the system.
However the coordinates are still off, so I still have to use the normal mouse
driver.

When I move the mouse INTO the VMWare window, the shown mouse pointer
and the coordinates registered by the guest system are quite close at
first. The more I move the pointer into the window, the more the
coordinates drift.

Example: I can click the Applications menu, when I move the pointer in
from the upper left corner, however when I move the pointer down the
menu, the lowest menu entry will highlight while the pointer is actually
just about at the middle of the menu.

This is with Kernel 2.6.27-7-generic and VMWare Workstation 6.5 with
latest VMWare Tools (from VMWare) installed. The problem occurs with and
without /usr/bin/vmware-user started.

password with an umlaut (ä,ö,ü) in it.

It fails with "authentication failure" for the particular account. Other
accounts on the same server (but no umlauts in password) worked fine.

(with "all power management" I meant "...related to the CPU" of course.)

Regarding bug 93404: IF the user would change the governor in g-p-m this
would deactivate powernowd, which would - if the conservative governor
doesn't work with the chipset - deactivate cpu throttling all together.
It is also possible to configure powernowd to act more like the
conservative governor.
But these are really two different things and making it all user
configurable without the several methods (powernowd and g-p-m / cpufreq)
conflicting is beyond bug fixing, IMHO.
I think this would be worth a spec ("clean up the cpu throttling mess"
or something alike ;) ).

The original intention of this bug report and discussion was to fix a
regression. This means: Make powernowd work as it did before.

I'd really prefer to stall this discussion until someone with more
experience and maybe knowledge about future plans for power management
takes a look at it.

I agree.

Agreed, too.

I'd like somebody with some more experience to have a look at this. Also
g-p-m is flawed in a way that the settings of the last logged on user
wins. This might not be desirable on a multi-user-system.

So there are several options:

1) disable all power management in g-p-m.
2) disable power management in g-p-m by default, but let users change it.
3) disable power management in g-p-m only when powernowd is installed,
which is tricky to implement because of install order.

I am sorry to hear that. However I have no clue, what would cause that,
since I have installed and uninstalled all versions of the package for
which I made a debdiff without problems.
Did you reinstall the PPA version or the official version?

> Also, I think the gnome-power-manager package should be changed to

I think that could be an option. But this way g-p-m would do nothing
even if powernowd is not installed.
Reviewing the postrm/-inst scripts I think it might not be at all
necessary to test for the presence of g-p-m. One could install the
mandatory defaults regardless of whether g-p-m is installed.
What HAS to be installed for this to work is gconftool-2.

I do have the problem on Hardy, too. I just tested on Intrepid to make
sure that it is not fixed there.

The udev rule mentioned above fixes the problem. Could you give the
output of 'ls -l /dev/bus/usb/BUSNR/DEVNR' where BUSNR and DEVNR are the
numbers from 'lsusb'.

In my case (without udev rule):

lsusb
-
Bus 002 Device 008: ID 091e:0003 Garmin International GPSmap (various
models)
-

ls -l /dev/bus/usb/002/008
-
crw-rw-r-- 1 root root 189, 135 2008-07-14 17:03 /dev/bus/usb/002/008
-

If I use the udev rule, the group of the device entry is changed (as
expected) to plugdev.

Same for me here. However I use the following workaround to log in at
all (this is with VMWare Workstation):

1. Click in the VMs Window and hit Ctrl+Alt+Shift+F2
2. Log in to the console
3. sudo apt-get install openssh-server

4. From the host: ssh -Y [EMAIL PROTECTED]
5. sudo gnome-control-center &
6. Click on "Login Window"
7. Enable Remote Login
8. Restart the VM (sudo shutdown -r now)
9. Open another Logon Screen on the Host (Switch User)
10. Select XDMCP from the menu
11. Select the VMs IP and log in

Voila, full screen logon to your Intrepid system.

LizardMan wrote:

This is because gnome-power-manager kicks in and activates its profile
for AC power / battery mode and sets the governor back to ondemand
(which then fails) which is the default.

The debdiff here fixes this by setting a mandatory default to disabled,
which means that gnome-power-manager will not deal with cpu throttling.

[Bug 223812] Re: [hardy] Regression: powernowd no longer works with some chipsets

2008-07-11 Thread Hanno Stock (hefe_bia)
** Summary changed:

- [hardy] Regression: powernowd no longer works with nforce2 cpufreq driver
+ [hardy] Regression: powernowd no longer works with some chipsets

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: powernowd

  Description: Ubuntu 8.04
  Release: 8.04
  powernowd:
Installiert:0.97-2ubuntu4
+
+ Updated description:
+
+ Powernowd (the package) does not work with chipsets where the ondemand
+ governor fails. This is because now the powernowd init script only
+ actually loads powernowd (the daemon) if the ondemand governor is not
+ present.
+
+ Also gnome-power-manager now conflicts with powernowd as it also enables
+ the ondemand governor by default.
+
+ Original description of the bug:

In gutsy I added cpufreq-nforce2 to my modules list and then powernowd
nicely scaled the frequency on my Athlon XP 2400+. Now I upgraded to
hardy and frequency scaling does no longer work.

However if I do the following, it works again (until next reboot):

  sudo /etc/init.d/powernowd stop
  sudo powernowd -q

If I do an 'sudo /etc/init.d/powernowd start' when powernowd is not
running I get the following message in /var/log/messages:

"Apr 28 20:10:29 HANNO kernel: [10637.446135] ondemand governor failed,
too long transition latency of HW, fallback to performance governor"

It seems that the init script loads the ondemand governor instead of
userspace governor. How can I prevent this from happening?

[Bug 154411] Re: 2.6.22-14 Sound does not work on iMac (Intel first Gen) REGRESSION

2008-07-10 Thread Hanno Stock (hefe_bia)
It unfortunately appears that this bug is not yet resolved. Does this
issue still exist in the Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS release? If so, the
Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha2 is also scheduled for release today. It will
appear at the following when available:
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha2 . It contains the
actively developed 2.6.26 Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if you could
test this upcoming release via a LiveCD and verify if the issue still
exists. If so, please include the appropriate debugging information as
outlined at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems . Thanks in
advance.

This looks like exactly the same problem. Please give me the output of

cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_driver

and I'll add that chipset to the patch.

[Bug 114565] Re: native Garmin-USB no longer working

2008-07-07 Thread Hanno Stock (hefe_bia)
Update:

For Hardy the udev rule is:

Create /etc/udev/rules.d/45-garmin.rules file:
SUBSYSTEM!="usb", GOTO="garmin_rules_end"
ACTION!="add", GOTO="garmin_rules_end"
ATTRS{idVendor}=="091e", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0003", MODE="0660", GROUP="plugdev"
LABEL="garmin_rules_end"

I'd suggest to put this file in its own package and let QLandkarte, etc.
depend on it.

2008-07-06 Thread Hanno Stock (hefe_bia)
Backing up open files without some kind of snapshotting (lvm snapshots

supposed to warn about such cases.

In any case this would be something that would have to be implemented
upstream. Feel free to report you suggestion to

Actually Philipp's version
(https://edge.launchpad.net/~philipp-dreimann/+archive) works fine if you
desperately need ICQ on hardy NOW. You can verify via the Launchpad generated
diff that he actually did apply the versionnumber patch only.
So no trust issues in this case - if you trust the Launchpad build system ;)
Also the version number should allow for seamless upgrading once the update is
out.

[Bug 223812] Re: [hardy] Regression: powernowd no longer works with nforce2 cpufreq driver

2008-05-12 Thread Hanno Stock (hefe_bia)
Joel,

it seems that your setup is not using the nforce2 cpufreq driver, but
the powernow-k8 driver - which is correct, I think, since the Athlon64
X2 supports PowerNow. (My Athlon XP does not)

So I guess your problem is a different one with similar symptoms only. I
noticed that I also have the message "Clocksource tsc unstable (delta =
-272825285 ns)" in my syslog, but I don't know what it means (Maybe
someone else can clarify this?)

However, I have published the modified powernowd package to my ppa:
https://launchpad.net/~hanno-stock/+archive
You can try it and see whether it fixes your issues as well.

[Bug 223812] Re: [hardy] Regression: powernowd no longer works with nforce2 cpufreq driver

2008-05-10 Thread Hanno Stock (hefe_bia)
Here is an updated debdiff:

* In the init script I changed the code so that it specifically checks for the
nforce2 driver. This makes it less generic (in case other drivers have a
similar issue), but more reliable against timing issues.
* In post{inst,rm} I added code that installs mandatory gconf settings for
gnome-power-manager IF it is installed. This disables the cpufreq functionality
of gnome-power-manager. I thinks this is desired if people install powernowd.

However this adds a dependency on gconf2.

These changes solve all the issues I had.
