2024-06-12 Thread Heiko Scheit
Thanks for following up on this.

I have to get some work done with xournal and matter working. As soon
as I find some time, I will follow the steps in comment #1, but it might
be only on or after the weekend...

[Bug 2069048] Re: gnome-shell crash (signal 11)

2024-06-12 Thread Heiko Scheit
Hi there,

thanks for your reply. In the meantime I found this bug report

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/7587

and this

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/3372

which address the issue.

For now I downloaded the new mutter packages from

http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu/pool/main/m/mutter/

All deb-files with '46.1-2ubuntu1' on this page and installed them with
'dpkg -i...'.

This solves the problem and so far no other side effects.

It would be good, if these packages are updated in noble (24.04) soon.

While the bug can be triggered or caused by xournalpp, gnome-shell

What exactly? The requirement is clear (and requested repeatedly in the
recent survey [1]). It's expected to scroll per pixel even when the cell
exceeds the window size. We have to jump to the top when going into edit
mode. But besides I don't see nothing controversial.

[Bug 1942799] Re: Exiv2 creates out of range exception with XMP data

2021-09-06 Thread Heiko
XMP data is commonly included in image metadata of images that have been
exported from darktable. Opening such an image in gthumb causes a non-
handled std::out_of_range exception in Exiv2::Xmpdatum::write. Finally,
gthumb terminates with the message

terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::out_of_range'
  what():  basic_string::at: __n (which is 19) >= this->size() (which is 19)

[Bug 1942320] [NEW] libvtk6.3-qt is empty

libvtk6-qt-dev provides a libvtkRenderingOpenGL-6.3.so, which is a

[Bug 1931765] Re: VAAPI broken on Wayland Kubuntu 21.04 (Plasma 5.22.0 + Weston)

2021-07-05 Thread Heiko Gimbel
At first i did not know that the problem was caused by the ppa. However
i think that the MESA drivers should always be upgraded to the latest
stable version. Ubuntu should handle the MESA packages like firefox.
Ubuntu is the only officialy supported linuxdistribution supported by
Steam for gaming and runs on outdated gpudrivers.

[Bug 1931765] Re: VAAPI broken on Wayland Kubuntu 21.04 (Plasma 5.22.0 + Weston)

2021-07-05 Thread Heiko Gimbel
Yes it works with the MESA packages from the ubunturepos. The problem
occurs after adding the kisak mesa fresh ppa and upgrading to the latest
stable MESA release. It only happens when Wayland is used. I always use
this otherwise great ppa to keep my MESA drivers up to date. Sadly the
packages in the ubuntu are often to old if you use your system for
gaming.

[Bug 1932328] Re: Thunderbird under Wayland does not correctly close (or manage) windows

2021-06-30 Thread Heiko Gimbel
Seems to affect my system as well. I am on Kubuntu 21.04 with KDE Plasma
5.22.2. Thunderbird is basically unusable on Wayland for me. The whole
ui is flickering especially when a reminder notification appears.
Thunderbird is the only application that is behaving like that. Firefox
runs without problems. I have also noticed graphical artifacts in GIMP
when running the Plasma Wayland Session.

[Bug 1931765] [NEW] VAAPI broken on Wayland Kubuntu 21.04 (Plasma 5.22.0 + Weston)

2021-06-12 Thread Heiko Gimbel
Public bug reported:

SUMMARY

VAAPI is broken on KDE Plasma Wayland and Weston Session

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open a terminal
2. Type in vainfo

OBSERVED RESULT

Error Message:
heiko@Tuxedobook:~$ vainfo
wl_drm@6: error 0: authenticate failed
VA error: wayland: Wayland roundtrip error: Protocol error (errno 71)
libva info: VA-API version 1.10.0
libva error: vaGetDriverNameByIndex() failed with invalid VADisplay,
driver_name = (null)
vaInitialize failed with error code 3 (invalid VADisplay),exit

EXPECTED RESULT
Should show VAAPI information without errors like on X11 session

This bug was reproduced multiple times on two systems one with an intel
igpu and one with a dedicated AMD GPU. Both systems are using the MESA
drivers from this ppa:

https://launchpad.net/~kisak/+archive/ubuntu/kisak-mesa

This bug was discovered because KODI Mediacenter was crashing on startup
on wayland while it is working flawless on X11/X.org.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: Kubuntu 21.04
(available in About System)

The last patch stores the state of the "More" expanders and should
remember the window size (might not work for some reason).

I suggest to create new tickets if something needs fine-tuning.

Workaround might be to maximize the window. But please try a nightly

[Bug 1760818] Re: gedit and gnome-calculator transparency/graphics corruption issue when GTK_IM_MODULE=xim is set

2019-09-28 Thread Heiko L
I'm wondering why this has not been fixed after such a long time. It can at
least be improved easily.
If the Adwaita theme works (which it does in may case, too), then it is (at
least partly) a theme issue.
In fact, some defaults seem to be missing in the Ambiance and Radiance themes:

By setting a default for the text background color in the following
file, most problems (gnome-calculator, gedit) are resolved for me:

/usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-3.20/gtk.css:

textview text {
   background-color: white; }

@import url("gtk-main.css");

However:
* Some problems remain., e.g. emacs scrollbar background color broken, too.
  The following solves that partly, too, but not completely:
  scrollbar {
   background-color: white; }
* If you change such system files, they will get reset with some later system
updates.
  (dpkg-divert can help to prevent such resetting/updating of files)

compromises.

I'm pretty sure we can evaluate LTR/RTL and update the command label and
the various captions accordingly.

Would be my understanding but the drawback of not perfectly terms with

[Bug 1423034]

2018-11-07 Thread Tietze-heiko
Microsoft does the trick with a long static tooltip below the list of
options like "Insert the content of the clipboard as a bitmap picture.
This format can take up a lot of memory and disc space, but is exactly
what you see on the screen". Hard to imagine that we find a similar
appropriate text that is shorter. But lets try:

GDI metafile - Screen optimized bitmap (GDI)
PNG Bitmap - Cross-plattform optimized bitmap (PNG)
Bitmap - Compatibility optimized bitmap [Remark: is that true?]
calc8 - Calc object [Remark: what's the difference to standard paste operation?]
DDE link - Reference only (DDE link)
DIF - Paste text using standardized formats (DIF)
Unformatted text - Paste plain text
Formatted text [RTF] - Paste with formattings (RTF)
Formatted text [Richtext] - Paste with formattings (Richtext) [Remark: What's
the difference between "RTF"=Rich formatted text and "Richtext"?]
HTML (HyperText Markup Panguage) - Paste with web formatting (HTML)
Star Object Descriptor (XML) - Backward compatibility object (SOD XML)

[Remark: Today we have an awkward mixture of brackets)

Adding Olivier for input from documentation team.

Paste Special dialog on Windows

Windows has no similar entry, and spelling full is not much informative,
IMHO.

Following https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Metafile "Essentially, a
WMF file stores a list of function calls that have to be issued to the
Windows Graphics Device Interface (GDI) layer to display an image on
screen." it's kind of screen-optimized image. Alternative perhaps
"Windows vector format (GDI metafile)", but is that really better?

[Bug 1798322] Re: Failed to install grub on a fresh install with custom partition selection

2018-10-17 Thread Heiko Voigt
It seems to be a secure boot / UEFI issue. Retrying with the same
bootentry and a minimal install also failed. I briefly saw something
about grub not being able to write somewhere in the install console.

Unfortunately I am not able to copy the text here, because the error
message box of the installer went above that. It would be nice if one
could investigate the output of the installer a bit more. It seems it is
not attached automatically here. Also after closing that message box the
installer console immediately dissapears, not very helpful to produce a
proper report.

When I selected a different boot entry for my USB-Stick (one without
UEFI in the name) I was able to install ubuntu without any problems.

[Bug 1798322] [NEW] Failed to install grub on a fresh install with custom partition selection

2018-10-17 Thread Heiko Voigt
Public bug reported:

When starting a fresh install for Ubuntu 18.04.1 I encountered this bug.

The system has an SSD with Windows 10 on other partitions and the Ubuntu
system should go on there while the /home partition has its own disk. I
selected the SSD as the target to install grub.

I started the install from an USB stick. While the installer was copying
files it told me at one point that grub can not be installed on
"/target" and the installation stopped.

[Bug 1759494] Re: system-config-lvm package missing from 18.04LTS Bionic Beaver

2018-08-06 Thread Heiko Sieger
I just like to add that in the absence of other alternative(s), it is
unwise to remove system-config-lvm from the repository. Much more so
when there is no apparent reason (Xorg being still the display server
used in Ubuntu...).

[Bug 1768230] Re: Long time booting : Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to device scanning.

2018-07-14 Thread Heiko Sieger
I ran into the same bug (30 sec boot delay) running Bionic with Mate
desktop.

The following steps solved the problem for now:

1. Edit /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume

2. Change as follows:
RESUME=none

3. Run
sudo update-initramfs -u

4. Reboot - no more delay

[Bug 1707906] Re: [needs-packaging] Package CQRLOG currently broken (Ubuntu 16.04 xenial)

2017-08-17 Thread Heiko Voigt
I can confirm this. Get the same error. After start of cqrlog there is a
messagebox:
"Error during connection to database: TMySQL56Connection can not work with the
installed MySQL client version: Expected (5.6), got (5.7.19)."

Its not a crash but the application does not open after that. Using the
package from the ppa fixes it for me.

[Bug 1651846] [NEW] ndiswrapper-1.59 for kernel 4.8.0-30-generic (x86_64) doesn't compile/install

2016-12-21 Thread Heiko Sieger
Public bug reported:

Description:Linux Mint 18.1 Serena

Package:
ndiswrapper:
  Installed: 1.59-6

  Version table:

ndiswrapper module in /var/lib/dkms/ndiswrapper.

[Bug 1327801] Re: Bightness and contrast settings have no effect

2016-10-01 Thread Heiko L
Sorry for the late response.
I tested today's cdimage (daily-live).
Unfortunately, the issue has not changed.
Still: Brightness and contrast settings have no effect.
(Tested with the same old scanner "Canon, Inc. CanoScan N1240U/LiDE 30".)

[Bug 429113] Re: libm pow() function does not report floating point underflow exception

2016-05-01 Thread Heiko
The C++ program shown below gives (when compiled under Ubuntu 16.04
using g++ in c++11 mode) the output

MATH_ERRNO is set
MATH_ERREXCEPT is set

2^2000 = inf
ERROR: numerical overflow

2^2000 = inf
no error

1/2^2000 = 0
ERROR: numerical underflow

1/2^2000 = 0
no error

Whereas the expected output is

MATH_ERRNO is set
MATH_ERREXCEPT is set

2^2000 = inf
ERROR: numerical overflow

2^2000 = inf
ERROR: numerical overflow

1/2^2000 = 0
ERROR: numerical underflow

1/2^2000 = 0
ERROR: numerical underflow

Replacing g++ by clang++ (version 3.8) or icpc (version 16.0.2) gives correct
results. Here, the test program follows:

#pragma STDC FENV_ACCESS ON

#include
#include
#include
#include

void test_fp_exceptions() {
  bool error=false;
  if (std::fetestexcept(FE_DIVBYZERO)) {
error=true;
std::cerr << "ERROR: division by zero\n";
  }
  if (std::fetestexcept(FE_OVERFLOW)) {
error=true;
std::cerr << "ERROR: numerical overflow\n";
  }
  if (std::fetestexcept(FE_UNDERFLOW)) {
error=true;
std::cerr << "ERROR: numerical underflow\n";
  }
  if (std::fetestexcept(FE_INVALID)) {
error=true;
std::cerr << "ERROR: invalid result\n";
  }
  if (not error)
std::cerr << "no error\n";
  std::feclearexcept(FE_ALL_EXCEPT);
  std::cerr << '\n';
}

int main() {
  std::cout << "MATH_ERRNO is "
<< (math_errhandling & MATH_ERRNO ? "set" : "not set") << '\n'
<< "MATH_ERREXCEPT is "
<< (math_errhandling & MATH_ERREXCEPT ? "set" : "not set") << '\n'
<< '\n';
  std::feclearexcept(FE_ALL_EXCEPT);
  std::cout << "2^2000 = " << std::pow(2., 2000) << '\n';
  test_fp_exceptions();
  std::cout << "2^2000 = " << std::pow(2., 2000.) << '\n';
  test_fp_exceptions();
  std::cout << "1/2^2000 = " << std::pow(2., -2000) << '\n';
  test_fp_exceptions();
  std::cout << "1/2^2000 = " << std::pow(2., -2000.) << '\n';
  test_fp_exceptions();
  return EXIT_SUCCESS;
}

[Bug 1549269] Re: Closing the Location Options menu will hang the Nautilus window

2016-03-07 Thread heiko
To open in terminal one should right click on the white space or on the
desired folder to bring up a context menu where you'll find that option.
Just my 2ct ;)

  Upgrade failure.
  But system is still running ...

  Edit (of 2016-02-25):
  Package in question is installed. So what's the issue? Is it just a wrong
message I received from the system? (It was telling me that my system would be
corrupted and probably unusable ... I'm happy it is not the case ...)
+
+ Edit (of 2016-02-26):
+ Because of some sound issues I applied following command to reinstall recent
kernel: sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-$(uname -r)
+ That fixed my sound problems so far.

[Bug 1059872] Re: Error formatting disk using disk utility

2014-07-20 Thread Heiko L
This bug exists for 1+1/2 years and finally made it into the LTS version 14.04
(Trusty).
I'm wondering why this bug was allowed to break such basic and essential
functionality like formatting a USB stick in an Ubuntu LTS version.
If it couldn't get fixed, the tool should have been replaced by GParted.
(Yes, GParted may be a little more complex to use, but what is the use of a
tool that does not work?)
(doesn't work on any of 3 Ubuntu 14.04 computers)

[Bug 1327801] [NEW] Bightness and contrast settings have no effect

2014-06-08 Thread Heiko L
Public bug reported:

Scanner: Canon, Inc. CanoScan N1240U/LiDE 30
Ubuntu 14.04, Simple Scan version 3.12.1.

Adjusting the settings of brightness and contrast has no effect.

With the default for scanning in "text" mode being too bright, this makes
"Simple Scan" in text mode unusable for me.
Brightness and contrast settings don't work in "foto" mode, too. But the
default of the foto mode is usable.

Brightness setting does work in program "Skanlite".

[Bug 1224575] Re: gnome-control-center keyboard no longer has way to modify caps lock key behavior

2014-04-04 Thread Heiko Selber
The proposed workaround with gnome-tweak-tool doesn't work for me.

I can change the behaviour of Caps Lock in some ways, but not in others.

Swiching Caps Lock with ESC works, but disabling it doesn't!

(I use Unity with German localization. Could that affect the behaviour?)

[Bug 1301225] [NEW] Parts of Text disappear in Firefox and Thunderbird Editors /Text Areas

2014-04-02 Thread Heiko Selber
Public bug reported:

System info:
Firefox 28
Thunderbird 24.4.0
Ubuntu 13.10 64 bit

When I edit text in Firefox or Thunderbird, parts of this text (usually
entire rows above the cursor) seem to disappear while I type.

This happens e.g. when I edit an email message inThunderbird, or edit a
Jira comment or a Wikipedia page in Firefox.

Sometimes the 'opposite' happens, i.e. a row is copied, so it is shown
twice.

The text is not really gone; I can restore it by selecting it (e.g. with
Ctrl-a). I.e. only the text display is affected.

The behavior is not quite reproducible. It does happen frequently, but I
can't reproduce it exactly by typing the same text again.

I had never observed this behavior before the latest Firefox upgrade.
