[Bug 736109] [NEW] gnome-screensaver fails to activate ubuntu 10.04.

2022-03-26 Thread ichap...@videotron.ca
The screen saver may not be activating due to some background task or a
browser tab playing something.  Just food for thought. Regards Ian.

[Bug 1525217] Re: md5deep binary is missing

2017-03-21 Thread ichap...@videotron.ca
I have fixed the missing md5deep and made my script run okay.
sudo ln -s /usr/bin/hashdeep /usr/local/bin/md5deep
That is all I did to get both hashdeep and md5deep functional. They use the
same binary code and work differently (a wee bit anyway) depending on being
called by md5deep or hashdeep.
I'm using Linux Mint 18.1 derived from Ubuntu 16.10.
What is still not working is "info md5deep" but it is okay for "info hashdeep".

It all needs to be looked at in Ubuntu.

In Debian 18.1 and Mint LMDE 2 Betsy they were both okay after
installation. Regards Ian.

Re: [Bug 785171] Re: Samba works or may not work quite random

2011-06-27 Thread ichap...@videotron.ca
Hi and thanks for looking into this,
I've updated to LinuxMint 11 and my wife Ginette is still on LinuxMint
9. My computer has Gufw 11.04.2. When I say enabled or disabled the
rules are in RED when enabled and not shown when disabled. The computer
of my wife Ginette has no firewall. Both machines are AMD64.

Initially I go to places/network and see my machine and Ginette plus
windows. I click on Ginette then MyFiles and it says fail to mount. I
close the network window. I disable the firewall and again click on
places/networks, then Ginette/MyFiles and it mounts and I can access her
files. I close the network window and enable the firewall and click on
places/network then Ginette/MyFiles and I can access her files. Once I
unmount MyFiles on Ginette from my Desktop (using the GUI right click) I
have to start again by disabling the firewall.

At one time I was using firestarter and gave up on it as the article in
Linux the complete manual (with Live DVD Ubuntu 9.10) simply failed
networking. When I moved to LinuxMint 11 I re-formatted my hard drive
to get rid of old stuff including firestarter.

Yes, I'm using the GUI when I can and a terminal when I must. (I've
spoiled myself). I've never seen networking work without first mounting
the remote with the firewall disabled. I've been confused due to all
the articles, comments, solutions and variations found by Google on this
subject and I've tried a few of them. I've also used ufw from the
terminal to enter a few things, but I really do not know what ports I
should have enabled. All I want is email, http, shttp and networking.

This is what I have enabled on the firewall and attached is smb.conf.
Anything else just email and I'll be happy to get back to you. Ian.

 Questions:
  - When you say with the firewall disabled it usuallly shows my other home

  - What do you mean by firewall disabled. What firewall are you using?
 What settings does it have?
  - Why do you think the firewall is at all related, when you seem to indicate
that it fails both with and without the firewall disabled.

It seems like you're saying usually it works if I disable firewall
(I'm assuming that means on the desktop system)

[Bug 785171] [NEW] Samba works or may not work quite random

2011-05-19 Thread ichap...@videotron.ca
Public bug reported:

1) When I click on Places/Network with the firewall disabled it usually shows
my other home computers and does a mount on my desktop when I click them. Once
mounted I can enable the firewall and access their shared files from the mount.
2) With all firewalls disabled I often get only the windows network icon and
it's empty. It was working as per item 1 last week and all that I've done is
to run the updates and updated all of a few hundred megs of stuff. I've been
fiddling with this on and off for ages and think I've got it fixed only to fall
down next time I use networks.

I'm running 10.4 by the way. Ian.

[Bug 580291] [NEW] Fails to read .jpg files

2010-05-13 Thread ichap...@videotron.ca
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

I pulled these file over from a few years ago. I could read them on
win98 using a similar free package. Right now it fails to show anything
and this is what it tells me.

Error interpreting JPEG image file (Not a JPEG file: starts with 0x8c
0x00)

I'm sure my friend scanned them from a photograph that he had taken 10
or 15 years ago.

The file was named Grnsat.jpg. I have the same problem with F spot etc.
I could see it in win98 maybe it lost a few bits in converting between
outlook and evolution but some of the images were okay.

upgrade asked me to report as bugs. 9.04 by the way is not as good as I
had hoped. System/exit is removed so I can never never update my wife

that I copied and pasted into gedit for you. The first three look really bad.
(U sure this is not an alpha dvd?) The last one looks like I'll be dead once
I reboot. Gosh what a mess may become I've tried making a bug report but
since it's not in an app it's not accepted. I even made a bug report using the
terminal command ubuntu-bug -p ubiquity but once in the firefox window it did
not understand ubipuity. Right now I'm in a partial mess. System is there but

I went there and round in circules. Maybe it (BUG) will die once we all
upgraded. I'm getting a bit piffed with being asked awkward questions
that I do not fully understand. Like try from the command line. I can
open a terminal then I'm stuck as to what to do. Or being asked for
more details when I think I've supplied lots. If you need more info
spell it out for a dummy.

2009-05-10 Thread ichap...@videotron.ca
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

The top bar got moved to the right of screen. Right click to get it
back to top okay but no apps, places or system. Firefox, Evolution and
help icons are now top left. What do I do to restore things for my
wife? I've tried deleting .gconf, .gconfd, .gnome and .gnome2 and that
fixed it only I lost evolution set up so I restored the above fixed
evolution and decided not to mess with stuff I do not understand. Guess
we need a restore factory defaults button. Yes this if Feisty in french
on an AMD 64 system and I've not updated my wife since first install, it
was working so don't fix it that way she is as happy as a non geek can
be. I'm thinking of moving all systems to the latest ubuntu soon but
she keeps having this sort of silly problem even on win98. Ian.

So what should I do? I guess I too will update all my machines to the
latest Ubuntu once I get a DVD with all the ISOs. Ian.

If the problem is with 8.04 LTS that is Long Term Support well I guess
all we can do is go for the newer version without LTS. Ian.

[Bug 328071] Re: Gedit Print preview

2009-03-20 Thread ichap...@videotron.ca
What Samuel is reporting is exactly what I saw ages ago. I've un-
installed gedit and re-installed it. Same problem. Wonder if this is
more gnome than gedit? Also if I print preview a few times the hole
thing locks and I have to reboot ubuntu. Other than that gedit works
fine. Other unrelated printer hick I tried to print a page from firefox
and had no color. The cups test page for an epson 660 seemed to be
printed to cyberspace. After a ubuntu reboot printing from cups test
page was great and the article I needed printed okay. I still think
it's better than XP. Regards Ian.

[Bug 328071] Re: Gedit Print preview

2009-02-12 Thread ichap...@videotron.ca
Just had an idea. Print to pdf then you can see what it prints. By the
way print preview hangs preparing the page with the yellowish band
across the top of the screen. I can system monitor kill the gedit
process but next time I enter gedit I have the same problem. Suspect if
I reboot it will be okay for several print previews. Regards Ian.

[Bug 328071] Re: Gedit Print preview

2009-02-11 Thread ichap...@videotron.ca
Hi Pedro,
All that I did was to load an asc file attached by clicking it in the Nautilus
2.22.5.1 window, a few simple edits, then file/print and it should have printed
two sheets and all that came out of the printer was the second sheet.
I then did a file/print preview and the first page was not there either only
the second page
I expected to see both pages or at least the start of the first page.

I tried loading and print preview a couple of other files with the same
result. This is repeatable. It's still like that with only one file in
Gedit. When it first manifested itself I had several files open for
edit in Gedit. Also after a few tries Gedit got stuck trying to do a
print preview. I had to reboot. I have used Gedit for some time
including printing without any problems. The rest of the Gedit stuff
still works okay, I'd prefer the Crimson editor but that's windows only.
Anything else please let me know. I've also done the latest Ubuntu
update without fixing anything. Ubuntu has a knack of both fixing and
making problems with their updates.

Regards Ian.

2009-02-03 Thread ichap...@videotron.ca
Maybe the DVD works on another machine but it may not be working on
yours. Busy box seems to be a temporary set of shell commands to
facilitate booting. I had the problem after an update. I fixed it by
getting an updated CD and re-installation. When you put in the DVD
select check DVD on your machine and reader. Good luck Ian.
