I have got the same problem on Ubuntu 14.04 64bit (with all available updates), but I'm using the file manager Nemo (version: 1.8.4). Closing all file manager windows and reopen them temporarily fixes the problem. [Bug 1203499] [NEW] Cannot select HDMI soud output at Notebook TravelMate 5730 with ATI RV620 HDMI
Public bug reported: If I attach my HDMI cable to my notebook with Ubuntu 13.04, I can not use the HDMI sound output. But my monitor/graphics (on the other end of the HDMI cable) works. I just do not see the HDMI sound output item in Settings - Sound Settings (Play sound through). Only the notebook's built in speakers are shown here. HDMI cable and speaker are working (Tested it with Windows 7).
