[Bug 1964670] [NEW] [mk-sbuild] still requests pkg-config-$target_tuple
Public bug reported: The cross pkg-config packages don't exist anymore, but mk-sbuild still attempts to install it for cross-compilations. pkg-config-$target_tuple was removed in https://salsa.debian.org/toolchain-team/gcc-defaults/-/commit/b1e452e249846782e25dc29f62762ebc23ca1633 and hirsute was the last release to have it. The package also apparently never existed for Debian, so creating cross- compilation chroots probably never worked for Debian. [Bug 1473527] Re: module ssh-authkey-fingerprints fails Input/output error: /dev/console
This also affects .ova cloud-image deployments on ESXi/vSphere, not surprising since it's similar to what John describes in comment 15. I think this is caused by the kernel parameter console=ttyS0 and the underlying VM having no serial port. This should not fail cloud-init and a similar bug was fixed in #1573095. [Bug 1181666] Re: gnome-shell randomly blocks mouse clicks from working in app windows
Ok, I solved the problem in my case. Given it seemed to be a communication problem I go the idea it could be ownership of sockets. I found various folders in my home directory were not owned by my local user and/or were not readable. Root owned .dbus and .gvfs, below .local were files/folders owned by me but without read/write permission. I did a "chmod u+rw -R ~.local" and "sudo chown -R [myuser]:[myusergroup] /home/[myuser]" and a reboot and so far no problems since a few hours. Maybe it would be a good idea to check for that once in a while. There may be valid reasons of not-user-owned folders or files, but probably a warning message would help. Also I believe everything below .local should be read-writeable for the user and owned by it. [Bug 1181666] Re: gnome-shell randomly blocks mouse clicks from working in app windows
Since yesterday I am also massively affected by this issue (Ubuntu 19.04, Dell Latitude 7280). The mouse buttons 'stop working' every few minutes, making working for me very tiresome. The only gnome extensions I have active are the frippery move clock, system monitor and desktop icons. Shortly before I installed/updated the following packages: evolution-plugins-experimental:amd64 3.32.1-2 libgmime-2.6-0:amd64 2.6.23+dfsg1-4 pan:amd64 0.145-1 libgmime-2.6-0:amd64 2.6.23+dfsg1-4 mime-support:all 3.60ubuntu1 hicolor-icon-theme:all 0.17-2 gnome-menus:amd64 3.32.0-1ubuntu1 libc-bin:amd64 2.29-0ubuntu2 man-db:amd64 2.8.5-2 desktop-file-utils:amd64 0.23-4ubuntu1 Maybe that is related, maybe the bug was dormant before, I do not know. Today, investigating the bug I noticed the following: * if the bug happens while the mouse is still over an item that can register a mouse click, I can still press the mouse button and the click will be registered. * I can still cycle the windows with alt-tab and the newly selected window will get the keyboard input, but the old window that was active when the bug happens will still get the mouse click. * if the bug happens when I click on the dock, then the mouse carries with it the program icon from the dock, and if I press "Esc" then to stop that, mouse seem not to do anything * "gnome-shell -r" helps for a few minutes, sometimes waiting a minute doing nothing helps, sometimes switching to console and back helps for a few minutes. * no hardware problem. Mouse works fine on a mac, touchpad shows the same issues as the mouse on ubuntu. Or, maybe more importantly to understand where the bug is coming from: * just right now it happened again. I can still use the mouse only inside this edit window inside the html page rendered in firefox to select with double clicks or move the cursor, but if I click on other links or buttons in this firefox window nothing happens, not even in this same page. If I alt-tab to another window and click inside this edit box, I can move the cursor and select, but all keyboard input goes to the other window I selected by alt-tab. To continue writing here I need to alt-tab again to firefox. right-click does not seem to work though, only left-click. * using xdotool I see that mouse position and window get updated when I move the mouse So, to my untrained eye it seems it is a problem with selecting the correct item to send the mouse clicks to, because the clicks still get registered but are received by the wrong item on the screen (sorry for probably not using the correct terms here). It seems that when the bug happens the item that was under the mouse cursor at that time stays the one that receives the clicks independent of where the mouse cursor is. If that item does not react to mouse clicks or already has reacted (like the dock) it seems to the user that the mouse button is not working. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1181666 Title: gnome-shell randomly blocks mouse clicks from working in app windows To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-shell/+bug/1181666/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1753509] Re: avahi-daemon adds/installs every printer on network
Hallo, same problem here. I set cups.conf to Browsing Off BrowseLocalProtocols none that seems to solve the problem in Cups, but network printers still show up in the gnome printing dialogue. Well... sometimes. When I open the print dialogue from Firefox then there is no unwanted network printer. When I open the printing dialogue from LibreOffice, the unwanted printer is still there. There also appears to be a significant time gap between changes in the conf files and the occurrence of the error. You think you have solved the problem, but after 5 minutes the unwanted printer is back. [Bug 1658451] [NEW] NetworkManager stops working on upgrade 16.04 -> 16.10
Public bug reported: Hi, first of all, let me inform you that I'm a very long term linux user. I installed my first linux in 1993. That means I worked through myriads of different network configuration issues, where networks are describes in terms of 1 to 20 different configuration files. Network configuration is always very custom to every environment and every user. Though in the older days the legacy ifconfig, route and friends had a strange syntax of options. I assume that's the reason why system designers chose to abstract away these syntax from the user. IMHO these abstraction layers never really worked and the most annoying thing about these different network configuration files is, that syntax and location changes between distributions and sometimes between minor releases. The funny thing is, that most if not any network configuration management tool is build of little programs, that finally sends command lines in the form of ifconfig, route etc. or in our days iproute2. The iproute2 syntax is the best syntax you can get from the cli. It is expressive, simple, well documented and quite - if not completly - bug free. Often when you write twenty LOC (lines of code) configuration options into a network abstraction syntax configuration file, this compiles into less than 10 LOC of iproute2 commands. In the end the plain iproute2 command line syntax is more clear and simple than any network abstraction idea from any distribution and if you did that once on any distribution, you simply copy your setup into another distribution and it will most likely work out of the box. Today I tried a beta update from Ubuntu 16.04 -> Ubuntu 16.10. After I restarted the computer my network was gone, all network cards where in the "unmanaged" status in the NetworkManager applet and the configuration that previously worked was gone, so I couldn't even review what had worked in the previous version. Searching the internet for such problems, I found some [ifupdown] setting to be switched to managed=true. After I did that and restarted the several services (networking and network-manager), nothing happened. Searching systemctl list-units for the network manager reveals that it is not there anymore, but the "network-manager" initialization script can be found in /etc/init.d/network-manager. Actually there is some systemctl magic that actually started the NetworkManager without a network-manager service, unit or whatever. To get my network up again I had to edit /etc/network/interfaces and put my network card to auto NETDEVICE iface NETDEVICE inet dhcp . As I told before, the iproute2 commands to get this thing going is ip link set dev NETDEVICE up # much more descriptive and easier to distinguish than auto NETDEV Of course iproute2 does not contain dhcp. So to get an auto configuration from my network card I also need to talk to the dhcp client: dhclient NETDEVICE You see here that two manual and simple to memorize calls completely replace the two lines in the /etc/network/interface syntax and it is much more transparent what happens to the system, when you work with the commands directly. For more complex setups I sometimes do, the iproute2 and bridge commands are much more flexible and very seldom there are more lines of code to setup a network than in any network configuration syntax. Now it seems that the /etc/NetworkManager configuration is completely ignored and there is a systemd-networkd not running, that can be controlled by a networkctl. So I'm completely confused now, what method you ubuntu distributors think of, to be the next cool technique to replace a simple sequence of commands. What about throwing away all these NetworkManager, networkctl and networking stuff and simply rely on the basics. Many years of failed network configurations show that all these methods don't actually work and that it is very easy for a user to understand the used underlying techniques: iproute2, dhcp and wpa_supplicant For simple setups the commands and configurations needed are learned in a few minutes. For complex setups it is easier to understand the core technology than to research the distributors idea of network configuration. Please clost this bag of worms. ** Affects: network-manager-applet (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1658451 Title: NetworkManager stops working on upgrade 16.04 -> 16.10 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-applet/+bug/1658451/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1433906] Re: Acer, Inc ID 5986:055a is useless after 14.04.2 installed.
Please note that while the above "quirk based" patch by gmiscko does make the Acer Integrated Camera work, it is an earlier attempt at the fix which was not approved by the UVC maintainer. The patch that has been signed off and sent towards upstream maintainers attempts to fix the brokenness in a general purpose way, without relying on the specific product id. The patch that is expected to reach upstream kernel is this: https://git.linuxtv.org/media_tree.git/commit/?id=e950267ab802c8558f1100eafd4087fd039ad634 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1433906 Title: Acer, Inc ID 5986:055a is useless after 14.04.2 installed. [Bug 1433906] Re: Acer, Inc ID 5986:055a is useless after 14.04.2 installed.
Hi Joseph The patch has landed in this repository: https://git.linuxtv.org/media_tree.git/log/ While I have no experience with this process, I was speculating that this entire branch will be pulled into mainline when the next merge window opens. But like I said, I don't actually know what to expect next. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1433906 Title: Acer, Inc ID 5986:055a is useless after 14.04.2 installed. [Bug 1433906] Re: Acer, Inc ID 5986:055a is useless after 14.04.2 installed.
Hi Thanks for providing the test kernel to people! I have also installed it and successfully tested. (Even I don't always recompile my own patch from source every time there's an upgrade.) The patch status is that the uvcvideo maintainer has signed-off on it, and forwarded it to linux-media mailing list. I don't know how many signed-off-by's we still need before it reaches Linus' tree. I have inquired about this now, here: https://patchwork.linuxtv.org/patch/37275/ -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1433906 Title: Acer, Inc ID 5986:055a is useless after 14.04.2 installed. [Bug 1599810] Re: Correct hostname not displayed in syslog after boot
OK, maybe I was too quick on this one. Just did a test with ubuntu-1604-xenial-v20161013 in GCE. To reproduce, simply boot up a machine from that image and look at the /var/log/syslog. The hostname in the log says "ubuntu" instead of the real machine hostname. Sending a testlog with "logger testlog1" gives me this line in /var/log/syslog: Oct 18 08:20:22 ubuntu igottwald: testlog 1 After that I do a "sudo pkill -HUP rsyslogd" and write another testlog with "logger testlog 2", then I see in /var/log/syslog: Oct 18 08:26:32 test-ig1 igottwald: testlog 2 test-ig1 is the correct hostname. Same is true if you build images with packer on-top of this image. The resulting images start with a hostname in the log which looks like "packer-bc6a04da-56ea-4982-aed6-664877993834" since this is the method of packer choosing random hostnames during image build. Again once the rsyslogd is HUPed or restarted, the correct hostname is back again. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1599810 Title: Correct hostname not displayed in syslog after boot To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/cloud-images/+bug/1599810/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1433906] Re: Acer, Inc ID 5986:055a is useless after 14.04.2 installed.
Progress is unfortunately slow. The work to be done is minimal, but response time from the maintainer has been in months. I guess this is a reflection of Linux being mostly a server OS, and the desktop side being developed in people's free time. I would have had higher hopes for Canonical applying the patch already, but it seems this bug ticket doesn't get a lot of attention either. If someone has any way to poke at them, that would be very useful.
Patching and building your own kernel is indeed a bit non-trivial. Some guides were written already earlier in this thread. Personally I've used this process: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/BuildYourOwnKernel A good first step is to simply check out the right ubuntu kernel, compile it and reboot, then do uname -a to check if you're successfully running your own built kernel. The patch is created with git send-email / git format-patch, so you should be able to apply it to a git repo simply with git am *.patch The patch is against Ubuntu 15.10 kernel, but I expect it to work against newer kernels as well. There are faster ways to try out a driver patch, but this is the process I managed to get working for myself.
Thanks Brad :-) Maybe a little encouragement was all I needed, because a new patch was now sent to the mailing list: https://sourceforge.net/p/linux-uvc/mailman/message/35123087/ Commentary: https://sourceforge.net/p/linux-uvc/mailman/message/35123103/ In short, Laurent (the module maintainer) pretty much rewrote the patch in his preferred way as part of the review, and his proposals do work, and current version is pretty much what he suggested. Hi The update is that after receiving the latest review (which itself took some time), it's taken quite long for me to context switch back to implement the requested changes. I do have an editor open in front of me right now, so hopefully it can happen in the next few days. The review comments were about code organization and style. I do expect the next patch to be approved (with minor comments, at most). The upstream list is quite silent, so might take additional time for it to be committed to the kernel though. Both patches I've sent do fix the actual problem though. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1433906 Title: Acer, Inc ID 5986:055a is useless after 14.04.2 installed. See http://sourceforge.net/p/linux-uvc/mailman/message/34681976/ I don't know what the kernel maintainers want from a fix, but for those of us who use (K)ubuntu on a Lenovo, I think it would make us very happy to simply do my last proposal: set entity[id=3]->baSourceID = 4 and we get a working web cam. I will send such a patch shortly. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1433906 Title: Acer, Inc ID 5986:055a is useless after 14.04.2 installed. [Bug 1486174] Re: No fonts after wake up from sleep
ASUS supports bios upgrades to the most recent version on windows only. Yet, I don't believe that this is the problem, given that I (and laurii) experience the problem with a T450S thinkpad as well. Other ideas? Anyone? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1486174 Title: No fonts after wake up from sleep To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1486174/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1486174] Re: No fonts after wake up from sleep
Hi Christoph, thank you for your help so far and for the helpful pointers to the ubuntu help pages. Unfortunately, the ASUS website does not provide the new BIOS directly but only indirectly in the form of a windows installer. I sent them an email asking for the BIOS separately. However, I doubt that this would solve the problem. I experience the exact same problem on a different computer at work (a Thinkpad T450S) which is also running xubuntu. I'll try updating the BIOS anyway and keep you updated about the success.

Sorry for the late reply, I just added the apport data. Downgrading libfreetype6 as suggested by Arnaud doesn't work for me. The problem persists although apt-cache show libfreetype6 shows package version 2.5.2-2ubuntu3 (rather than the most recent version 2.5.2-2ubuntu3.1).
