Is that with your PPA xorg video driver installed? Can you reproduce
that success without? We should look at the differences between our
configs.

[Bug 1082742] Re: plymouthd: ply-terminal.c: 611 ply_terminal_open: Assertion `terminal != ((void *)0)' failed.

2012-11-26 Thread jaduncan
I hope one day to have two devices for such work. One for all the
hacking and second running only packaged work.

Well, in this case you could always just have two USB sticks/SD cards to
boot off. If your base rootfs is small enough to send or you've got
notes on how you set it up I'll even try that directly for you.

I think this is actually an X hang bug - when I remove the plymouth
entries entirely from /etc/init (not neat, I know) I get the same blank
screen and lock but without the plymouth error message. Any ideas on how
to check if it's a framebuffer issue?

[Bug 625193] Re: Official 10.10 wallpaper is unappealing

2010-08-29 Thread jaduncan
meh!

Can people stop adding 'me too' now!

The issue is that a wide range of people agree that the wallpaper is
substandard. This is an unusual reaction - none of the previous
wallpapers have provoked a formal bug. Since this contributes to the
overall impression of the OS, it is important to the community.

Since you asked for data, I have asked 25 people if they preferred the
new orange dot wallpaper, or the old pure purple wallpaper. 23 said they
preferred the former. This is aesthetic testing. You have substantive
data.

[Bug 584560] [NEW] get-iplayer broken by BBC changes, simple fix enclosed.

2010-05-23 Thread jaduncan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: get-iplayer

1) Ubuntu version: lucid
2) Package version: 2.66-1
3) I expected get-iplayer to successfully get a video from BBC iplayer.
4) It currently fails, as listed below.

The BBC have recently changed their auth measures and hosting for
iplayer, breaking get-iplayer (happily, a fix is at the bottom of this
bug report). The way it fails without this fix is as follows:

This can be fixed in the perl script like so:

Under the section ‘# Limelight CDN’ change these two lines:

From: $conn-{playpath} = $cattribs-{identifier}?$cattribs-{authString};
To: $conn-{playpath} = $cattribs-{identifier};
AND
From: $conn-{application} = $cattribs-{application};
To: $conn-{application} = $cattribs-{application}?$cattribs-{authString};

Since this is a two line fix, is there any change of getting an update?
get-iplayer currently fails to download anything, so it is severely
broken.

[Bug 359264] [NEW] Gnome clock has (Georgia) country, but not capital city

2009-04-10 Thread jaduncan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

The time zone options have Georgia as a country, but the capital city
(Tbilisi) cannot be selected in the clock applet as a location. This
seems different from every other selectable nation. It is also odd as
Georgian is a supported translation of Ubuntu.

This seems like it should be a simple fix - if a developer can tell me
the file I can certainly go in to the XML (or whatever) and make a
patch. Anyone want to mentor me?

[Bug 354323] [NEW] Turning on video makes voice calls disconnect

2009-04-03 Thread jaduncan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

When using the Jaunty Empathy client on both ends, a voice call can be
connected between two hosts. The audio is sent correctly. When video is sent
from either end, the call instantly disconnects. The cameras concerned are a
Lenovo UVC camera from a x200s (Bus 001 Device 003: ID 17ef:480c Lenovo) and a
Sony Motion Eye (Bus 001 Device 003: ID 05ca:1839 Ricoh Co., Ltd) from a
PCG-5J5M. Both devices display an image in gstreamer-properties, so the input
should work. Audio works, so the transfer of data seems ok (it should be noted
that both devices are on the same NAT network). The calls are from gtalk to
gtalk account, although the bug is also reproducible when creating an account
on jabber.org and as mentioned the audio does go through so the connection
seems OK. I am confused. I also note that the cameras are both high resolution,
but show up in the preview window fine. I have attached a screen shot of this
(and why yes, it is me looking like a man filing a bug report). The screenshot
is taken at the time after the voice call is created, and the video preview is
fine but before the point at which the video call is initiated and the
receiving client disconnects. The sending client is not aware that the call has
ended at this point (might this be due to a crash on the receiving end rather
than a neat ending of the call?), but continues to count time upwards as if the
call is fine but it happens to be receiving no data. I will also include the
empathy.log from sender and receiver in the comments.
.
The one thing I did wonder is if the 1280*1024 capture resolution of the camera
is crashing the stream somehow.

The video failure thus seems like a large bug, and one that I had
assumed would be fixed by the 2.26.0.1 updates. Versions of relevant
software are current as of Jaunty, 3/Apr/09: empathy 2.26.0.1-0ubuntu1,
telepathy-gabble 0.7.22-1ubuntu3, gstreamer-plugins-base 0.10.22-4, and
gstreamer-nice 0.0.5-build1

[Bug 354323] Re: Turning on video makes voice calls disconnect

2009-04-03 Thread jaduncan
A bit that seems the source of the crash from receiver's empathy.log -
is one client really sending a stream that the other client cannot
decode? Surely not, given that this is gstrtptheoradepay.c. It looks
like an error with getting the two cryptography pads right. This would
also appear to imply that the size of the stream is not the issue:

[Bug 154602] Re: incorrect cp(1) behaviour upon mkdir foo; cp -r foo foo

This is correct behaviour as per POSIX - it's how it should work!

This is something that would be an upstream bug, but they will not want
to change this behaviour.

2009-03-30 Thread jaduncan
This is a wishlist bug - but you'll be happy to know that jaunty drops
to text mode and gives you a menu to aid recovery. In addition we now
write serious errors to the screen so the user knows what's going on. If
you'd like a 'sad mac' style screen, please add it to Brainstorm and
we'll see what the community think!

[Bug 289346] Re: error loading os

2009-03-30 Thread jaduncan
This bug needs more information to even have a clue on what to fix. This
sounds like a bootloader issue, but it is sufficiently unclear that
nobody will ever know. Closed as this is not even useful for others - we
do not know what bootloader was selected so the bug is impossible to
assign.

[Bug 282020] [NEW] Flash video freezes (not a FF or plugin crash, looks like overlay)

2008-10-11 Thread jaduncan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

When playing videos on flashplugin-nonfree they periodically (1-2 mins
in to a video generally, but fairly randomly) stop updating the video
while the sound plays on perfectly. On moving the window, the video
immediately pops back and updates (to perfectly in sync with the sound).
This can also be caused by moving the web page within the window, moving
another window partly over the video image or positioning a right click
menu so it pops up over the video image. This feels like a video overlay
bug, but only occurs with flash. Totem plugin works perfectly for hours
of video playback, and so does mplayer. Swfdec also does not display
this behavior, even on the same files.

My machine is an x61s Thinkpad with an x3100 video card. The video card
is running on the intel driver, and compiz is not enabled.

Software versions are Intrepid as of 12/10/08, and the relevant packages
are: flashplugin-nonfree (10.0.12.10ubuntu1), xorg-xserver
(1:7.4~2ubuntu7) and xorg-xserver-video-intel (2:2.4.1-1ubuntu6).

The xorg.conf file is autogenerated, but included as an attachment for
completeness.

I am available for followup, and I am willing to test any binaries or
patches.

Many thanks.

[Bug 269656] Re: AN IRRELEVANT LICENSE IS PRESENTED TO YOU FREE-OF-CHARGE ON STARTUP

2008-09-14 Thread jaduncan
This does indeed add an entirely different level of legal due diligence
which must be done before use can be verified by legal.

The clauses are further restrictions on the GPL (problematic for
derivatives), and I think at the very least it should have an
explanation stating that the EULA has been added by Mozilla and does not
apply to any other program.

I'd have the dialogue box offer to install abrowser if the EULA is
declined. Option boxes would be something like (and I'm a law student,
not a HCI guy so I'm aware wording could be better).

'Agree and start firefox' 'Disagree and quit' 'Use abrowser (Ubuntu's
unbranded firefox)'

IMO applying EULAs to things in main is an *extremely* bad idea as it
makes the freedoms that main claims to represent invalid. Surely firefox
should now live in restricted.

No attorney/client relationships are created by the above comment,
obviously. It is merely comment, not legal opinion in any form.

2008-09-14 Thread jaduncan
@ Vadim

The GPL and other free software licenses are copyright licenses, not use
licenses. Don't confuse them. Use of the software as opposed to
redistribution is unrestricted.

Use licenses in main are a new and worrying thing.

No attorney/client relationship is created, this is not legal advice,
etc ad nausiam.
