[Bug 467572] Re: impossible to update to ubuntu 9.10 due to updater manager problem

2009-12-07 Thread jdelima
Hello,

Have you tried typing the following lines into a terminal?

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

the above fix did not work for me

when i reboot & start up the computer, the update manager pops up with
the following message:

"not all updates can be installed

run a partial upgrade, to install as many updates as possible.

this can be caused by:

a previous upgrade that did not complete
a problem with some of the installed software
unofficial software package not provided by ubuntu
normal changes of a pre-release version of ubuntu"

and when i click on "partial upgrade" update manager still aborts

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

TB version 2.0.0.18 (20081125)
i have 7 email accounts with my internet service provider. in the last 2 days
after i returned from a 5-day trip abroad when i did not access my e-mail
accounts, my passwords no longer work. however, i can access the accounts by
using the ISP's webmail service with the passwords. so i guess TB has a
password bug. when i key in & enter the password, i get the ff "sending
password did not succeed . mail server pope.casema.nl responded:
authentication failed. the same password works with casema webmail.

however, my mac email account using the same smtp does not (yet) exhibit
the same problem.

several weblinks (google, yahoo, etc) appears and the entire system
simply hungs and i'm unable to remove or exit from the menu bar or the

windows or other applications.

in this case i've had to reset the computer to be able to get back to

i wanted to add date & time to the main menu panel

1. i clicked on : applications/accessories/panel

no, i don't think it was a bug after all. the first time i tried
removing the trash bins from the panel after the reboot required by the
updates, i did not succeed. but after another reboot, i could remove
(and add) items on the gnome panel. before today's updates, i a problem
similar to that of bug 49594. so the updates must have taken care of
the bug.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 49594 ***

i haven't been able to restore the trash symbol since i upgraded to
hardy. but i discovered that i can delete & empty trash by going to
file browser and moving unwanted files to the "deleted items" folder. i
think trash has been renamed "deleted items". so i don't bother trying
to restore the trash on the gnome panel.

[Bug 49594] Re: Bonobo-activation-server sometimes is not killed after session restart, leading to many unexpected problems

2008-06-07 Thread jdelima
it seems i have the same problem. but i still don't know how to work
around it after browsing through all the comments, which are too
technical for me. e.g., what exactly does the following "Bonobo has
mechanisms for allowing its activated objects inherit specific
environment variables from the launching process, rather than b-a-s."
mean?

or the fix outlined in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
applets/+bug/211604/comments: "Edit:
/usr/lib/bonobo/servers/GNOME_Panel_TrashApplet.server

Add this inside the element
(NOT the one with the location="OAFIID:bla")

"

what exactly should i do to solve the problem?

thanks!

hardware (lcd monitor): o.b.disp2.1_22w (belinea o.display 2 22" wide)
Leadtek pcie card nvidia nv43geforce 660
resolution setting cannot be maintained
screen deteriorates into moving fine vertical and horizontal lines of unblended
colors and the horizontal lines constantly pulsating upward.

note: i'm not sure whether this is a bug or a hardware defect but when
i set the resolution to 1680xs1050 the screen seemed to work perfectly.
the monitor is new and i just connected this yesterday morning.
