[Bug 571308] Re: Thunderbird crashes with segmentation fault

2010-06-22 Thread jhaig
Thunderbird requires nscd? That would be the Name Service Cache Daemon?
That makes a lot of sense. :-)

Anyway, that has fixed it for me too. Thanks.

[Bug 362970] Re: package flashplugin-installer 10.0.22.87ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade over proxy

2010-06-12 Thread jhaig
I am also seeing this problem and it is very annoying. To clarify what
others have said, I found that the workaround is:

$ sudo su -
$ apt-get upgrade

I found that 'sudo apt-get upgrade' doesn't work as it does not seem to
pick up the http_proxy setting. Further, if I have accidentally tried
to upgrade without switching to root, I have to remove the flashplugin-
installer package and then reinstall it:

$ sudo su -
$ apt-get remove flashplugin-installer
$ apt-get install flashplugin-installer

[Bug 571308] Re: Thunderbird crashes with segmentation fault

2010-05-23 Thread jhaig
I tried running "thunderbird -safe-mode" but I also get a segmentation
fault with that. It hadn't occurred to me before but I am also using
LDAP for the user with an NFS home directory in the case where
thunderbird is failing, and local authentication with a local home
directory where it works properly

For the sake of actually reading emails, I moved .thunderbird to a local

I am seeing this with the released version. I have the home directory
mounted over NFS and thunderbird fails with a Segmentation Fault. Is it
possible to find out what changed on your system, to see if there is
something I can try?

[Bug 24250] Re: Doesn't honor gnome proxy settings

2009-11-02 Thread jhaig
I have seen this as well. It seems only to be a problem when you click
on the 'Upgrade' button, when it does some checks before displaying the
Release Notes. I can verify this by starting update-manager with ports
80 and 443 blocked on the proxy server (ie, http and https forced
through the proxy), clicking 'Upgrade' (at which point update-manager
freezes) and then going on to the proxy and unblocking those two ports.
When the firewall is restarted with ports 80 and 443 open, update-
manager continues to the Release Notes page. I can then block the ports
on the proxy again and the upgrade continues as normal, using the proxy.
I am guessing that there is just one point in the code where the proxy
is being ignored.

Is this serious? I raised this bug a year and a half ago so obviously
it is not now referring to the most recent version of the package. I
am afraid I cannot test this for you now as I am now using CentOS as

Re: [Bug 152261] Re: grub not configured with live CD install with pre-existing /home partition (Gutsy RC)

2008-08-13 Thread jhaig
If it is the same problem as I saw I know a way of getting round it,
although I'm not entirely clear of the details. Unfortunately (for
you), it involves avoiding the "migrate users" step, which will mean
that your new Ubuntu install will not have all the XP users set up
automatically for you.

I thought I had pasted my workaround to the bug report, but evidently
I didn't. Here is something I sent to someone else who also had the
problem:

"I managed to install completely by commenting out the section in the
installer that calls the migration helper. I cannot remember where
the section I cut was, but I think it was in
/usr/share/ubiquity/install.py (use the end of syslog I submitted as a
guide - )."

I'm afraid, other than reinstalling my own machine I cannot give more
details. I hope this is useful for you.

Regards,

Joe

Re: [Bug 152261] Re: grub not configured with live CD install with pre-existing /home partition (Gutsy RC)

2008-05-06 Thread jhaig
Thanks. I managed to install in the end by editing one of the install
scripts (I forget which) commenting out the section that ran the
migration assistant. If I knew a bit more python I might have looked
at it a bit more but I'm afraid my knowledge extends to putting a # in
front of a few lines.

I remember that in the summary before the install stated there was
some comment about not finding /user on the /dev/sda2 (/home)
partition. I am guessing that it is expecting to find a Windows file
structure and failing when it doesn't find one.

[Bug 179847] Re: Cannot configure printers when not connected to the network.

2008-01-21 Thread jhaig
A workaround for this is to go to:

  System->Administration->Printing->Server Settings

and ensure that "Show printers shared by other systems" is deselected
before disconnecting from the network. This is still not ideal, as this
option can only be reached if the computer is still connected to the
network.

[Bug 179847] Cannot configure printers when not connected to the network.

2008-01-02 Thread jhaig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: system-config-printer

If there are network printers configured but the computer is taken off
the network, system-config-printer returns a "There was a problem
connecting to the CUPS server." error on starting and then terminates.
This means that it is impossible to configure printers when not
connected to the network. For a laptop, this is a serious limitation.

[Bug 173332] very high nfs access

2007-12-01 Thread jhaig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nfs-kernel-server

Since upgrading to Gutsy I have had very high traffic across my network
causing high collisions. I have narrowed it down to the /home nfs
mount. I frequently (ie, almost all the time when nfs is being used)
see around nfs 1000 requests per seconds, as shown in the attached munin
graphs. This appears to be causing both the client and server to run
sluggishly.

[Bug 152261] grub not configured with live CD install with pre-existing /home partition (Gutsy RC)

2007-10-13 Thread jhaig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: migration-assistant

Please excuse any slight inaccuracies. I have now installed Feisty, and
I cannot remember the details exactly.

I attempted to install the Gutsy RC on a laptop that already had Edgy
installed. The disk is partitioned as follows:

  /dev/sda3 - 12G (root)
  /dev/sda1 - 1G (swap)
  /dev/sda2 - 65G (/home)

I tried to do a full reinstall, formatting the root partition and
keeping /home. The install proceeds as usual until after all the
packages are installed, at which point the /home partition gets mounted
on /mnt/migrationassistant. There then appears to be a problem
unmounting this partition with an error (in /var/log/syslog) saying that
it cannot access /media/.hal-mtab. I am guessing that this causes the
installer to terminate prematurely. On rebooting I found that grub had
not been configured correctly.

I have just reinstalled Feisty and it appears that it has the same
problem except that the migration assistant happens before the package
install and after failing to unmount the partition, it gives the option
to continue or abort. I manually unmounted and continued, and the
install completed successfully.
