[Bug 1913970] [NEW] install failure on mbr legacy MB with ssd (860 EVO)

2021-01-31 Thread Job
Public bug reported:

During fresh install, the installer came back with a failure message.
Unfortunately, I can't recover the /var/log/syslog and /var/log/partman to my
bug.
Install attempt was from Ubuntu 20.10 live CD with update from new software
releases.

[Bug 1913483] [NEW] grub-efi 2.04-1ubuntu35.2 failed due to install on legacy MBR Bios

2021-01-27 Thread Job
Public bug reported:

I recently installed a new SSD (860 Evo) on legacy MBR Bios machine
(Gigabyte ga-ma770-ds3 v.01) with F6 Bios version. Debian can't find
this SSD, Ubuntu can, but only installs 'well' with ZFS. Other FS and/or
partitioning options result in freeze after reboot following fresh
install. However, ZFS uses efi by default, without a consideration or
option for MBR install. This leaves my system working, but with software
updates that need to write to grub, a grub failure is reported (caused
by unfinished implementation of grub-efi at install...

[Bug 1788829] Re: Update to new maintenance release

2018-11-12 Thread Sjoerd Job Postmus
Based on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/UpdateProcedures, which
states

```
Issues that warrant a security update
We only fix bugs in our stable releases which truly affect overall
system security, i. e. which enable an attacker to circumvent the
permissions configured on the system, or are a threat to the user's data
in any way. Most common examples:
Buffer overflow in a server process which allows to crash it (denial of
service) and/or to execute attacker provided code (privilege escalation).
Insecure temporary file handling which allows race condition and symlink
attacks to delete unrelated files with the invoker's privileges.
Non-working security-relevant configuration options (e. g. iptables would
allow packets which should be blocked, or a server's ACL option does not do the
right thing).
Less critical bugs (like Denial of Service vulnerabilities in instant
messengers or email applications) are also fixed usually, but with lower
priority.
```

it might be argumented that this is a security issue: "or are a threat
to the user's data in any way" and "Non-working security-relevant
configuration options".

Of course, that's only one way of reading it, but a backup tool that
starts failing to backup does not sound very secure.

Re: [Bug 1675521] Re: Crash about 70% of coppying files (maybe a virus)

2017-08-28 Thread James Job
Sorry for not replying till now. Problem was with the hardware of my
computer. I had to replace the old motherboard with a new one,

Yesterday I successfully installed Ubuntu 16.04.1 and for the first time
and even did a full update without any problems (except one)

I have a 3g Micromax modem which is detected by Ubuntu 14.04.5 but not by
Ubuntu 16.04.1
So I first installed Ubuntu 14.04.1 on my system, activated the Micromax 3G
modem.
Restarted the system to boot Ubuntu 16.04.1 live DVD.
Started Ubuntu 16.04.1 without installing and was able to setup my 3G
Micromax modem as a mobile broadband modem.
I then was able to install Ubuntu 16.04.1 to get updates while installing.

However today when i started my system my modem was not getting connected
again so I restarted the system booting Ubuntu 14.04 from live dvd
then set up the modem. Then restarted from the hard drive and now Ubuntu
16.04 has detected the modem . ( How this worked is beyond me )

I will be trying out a different modem in a few days and i think it will
solve the problem

Thank you for all the help and support and for making me so happy.

Re: [Bug 1671941] Re: crashed in the middle of copying files

2017-03-23 Thread James Job
I have installed from Ubuntu Studio 16.04 live DVD. I also did verify it
using the check disc option at the boot menu before trying to install to
the hard drive. I have also tried to install the software several times but
the crashes occur sometimes at the start and sometimes in different stages
of copying the files..

I am also not able to install Kubuntu or Fedora but windows xp and 7
installs ok and works with a antivirus.
I suspect a virus but I do not know what to do about it.

[Bug 1446552] Re: Unattended upgrades handles new dependencies inconsistently

2015-10-06 Thread Sjoerd Job Postmus
@BrianMurray: Not anymore, unfortunately.

How I originally reproduced it was:

- Create a testing package (doesn't have to really contain anything) that just
installs 1 file into /usr/share/testpackage/, and have it depend on some
packages.
- Put that package on a private repository (which is also configured for APT
and unattended-upgrades)
- Install the package using `apt-get install testingpackage`
- Update the package as follows: 1. Add a dependency which is not yet installed
on your machine (and is also not in the security-repository). Up the version
number, and add it to the private repository.
- Run `unattended-upgrade --debug --apt-debug 2>&1 | tee output.txt`.
- Verify the package was not updated (missing dependency).
- Host the dependency on your private APT server as well (1-1 copy).
- Run `unattended-upgrade --debug --apt-debug 2>&1 | tee output.txt`.
- Verify the package was not updated (missing dependency).
- Re-build the dependency with a higher version number, and add it to your
private APT repository.
- Run `unattended-upgrade --debug --apt-debug 2>&1 | tee output.txt`.
- Verify the package was now upgraded.

With the proposed patch, the upgrade would already succeed after hosting
the exact copy on the private APT repository.

If needed I could probably figure out how to reproduce this again, but
it would take me quite some time, as I'd have to set-up everything
again. Hopefully my description of the case is enough for you to
reproduce this.

Let me know if you need my help in reproducing.

[Bug 1435040] Re: Ubuntu Phone (BQ E4.5) does not connect to car-bluetooth

2015-04-29 Thread Job
I am unable to get a stable connection between my BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu
Edition phone and my car kit. The phone is recognisedby the car as a
device, it is paired and synchronised, but the bluetooth connection is
severed approximately 20 seconds after synching. At the same time the BQ
Phone starts searching for/connecting to new devices.

The BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition runs on Ubuntu 14.10 (r21) and my car
is a Volvo V50. Connections to the car kit work well with Android,
Windows and Apple phones.

[Bug 1446552] [NEW] Unattended upgrades handles new dependencies inconsistently

2015-04-21 Thread Sjoerd Job Postmus
Public bug reported:

When an installed package adds a dependency that is not yet installed on
the system, this sometimes causes the package to not be installed,
depending on the origin containing the original candidate version.

I believe that the problem is in /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade, line 102.
Here a check is performed to prevent downgrades. However, as a side
effect it also prevents adjusting the candidate version for packages
that have not yet been installed (because pkg.is_upgradable is False for
packages that have not been installed).

This makes updating private packages using unattended-upgrades
troublesome, especially when new dependencies have been added. Currently
it requires repackaging the dependencies with a slightly higher version
number than what is in the main repository, and then hosting them on the
private repository, which is time consuming and error-prone. With the
included patch, it is sufficient to just host the same version on the
private repository.

** Affects: unattended-upgrades (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Patch added: also_adjust_candidate_version_for_non_installed_packages.patch

[Bug 1323559] Re: cmake doesn't find python3-dev library

2014-08-24 Thread Job Noorman
The problem seems to be that Ubuntu 14.04 installs Python 3.4 by default
and the installed CMake version only searches up to Python 3.3. A
workaround is to add set(Python_ADDITIONAL_VERSIONS 3.4) before the
find_package statement.

CMake 3.0 does search up to Python 3.4.

I think this should be fixed somehow in Ubuntu since there is a
inconsistency here. So either CMake should be upgraded or
FindPythonLibs.cmake should be patched.

[Bug 1016678] [NEW] [HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB, playback] No sound at all with some of the options on www.radio4.nl

Probable bug in utilizing Totem within firefox on the streaming website
of radio4.nl. It only functions properly in the livestream in low
quality. Playing in high quality or other options like playing from
archives or trying to slide the volume button don't function at all.
Today, for the first time, Totem crashes. Should I be utilizing another
program within firefox? Then why? After all Totem comes primarily
installed by Ubuntu. Thanks in advance for your reply!

[Bug 851169] Re: oneconf-service crashed with ServerNotFoundError in _conn_request(): Unable to find the server at apps.ubuntu.com

2012-06-04 Thread JOB
Same thing here. I got this crash in Precise today (which also happened
to be the day I installed it). It didn't prevent me from working though.
It just said there is a crash and sent this report.

[Bug 1003843] [NEW] Firmware upload fails in hplj1000 script

2012-05-24 Thread Job Noorman
Public bug reported:

The hplj1000 script fails to upload firmware files when both the
usb_printerid program and the CUPS USB backend are found.

The problem is that the hplj1000 script first tries to upload the firmware by
catting it to /dev/usb/lpN and sending this process to the background.
Then, while this process is probably still running, it *also* tries to upload
the firmware using the CUPS USB backend.

The net result is that both methods fail.

I have attached a patch that fixes the problem. The patch makes sure
that either the cat method *or* the CUPS method is used (it tries in
that order) but never both.

Another note: the upload happens too fast on my system (the script
sleeps 3s before uploading) and this causes the printer to not work
(although the firmware *is* uploaded). If I increase the sleep to 10s,
it does work. Should I file another bug for this?

[Bug 898116] [NEW] apt can't deal gracefully with broken mirrors in mirrors.txt

2011-11-30 Thread Job Snijders
Public bug reported:

I use the mirror://mirrors.ubuntu.com/mirrors.txt trick in
/etc/apt/sources.list, which is an excellent feature since I don't know
where boxes will end up. But if mirrors.txt output contains a mirror
which responds to http requests but is no longer a reasonable up2date
mirror such as http://ubuntu.washdc-linux.com/ubuntu/ (seems to be
squatted ATM) apt-get will throw errors such as these:

W: Failed to fetch
mirror://mirrors.ubuntu.com/mirrors.txt/dists/maverick/Release.gpg
Connection failed [Mirror:  http://ubuntu.washdc-linux.com/ubuntu/]

What I would expect 'apt-get update' to do is to select (randomly)
another mirror from mirrors.txt if it receives unworkable output, or
fall back to countrycode.archive.ubuntu.com or something more graceful.

Tested on: Ubuntu 10.10, x86_64, with apt 0.8.3ubuntu7.3

[Bug 769925] Re: Unity steals focus from terminal in fullscreen when switching workspaces.

2011-05-06 Thread job
I have a similar issue, and it does happen all the time

Several applications running maximized (normal size works fine): e.g.
firefox  terminal.

When I alt-tab from one to the other the new window looses input i.e. no
keyboard focus, the window contents are not click-able. The menu items
do work, but don't show response in the window. I'm looking at an image
of the window not the actual application. For if I un-maximize or 'F11'
the window the focus is back. Same happen if I click the application in
the launcher bar, but again only in maximized mode.

Assuming it's a display issue, this is the fglrxinfo output:

display: :0  screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 5670
OpenGL version string: 4.1.10665 Compatibility Profile Context

this also showed on a flickering screen after reboot and ending at a blinking
prompt. Able to restart system with previous kernel version (2.6.28-15) in
9.04. Reinstalled acpid (after complete removal), acpi-support had te be
removed also. With new install depends of acpi-support were also installed
(previously not on the system).
Apt-log showing that upstart-logd (0.3.9-8) has broken depends on upstart
(0.6.3-10).

Hopefully after rebooting a working 9.10 system; otherwise there's work
to be done... Good luck on that one!

[Bug 229043] Re: System freezes when login out

2008-05-19 Thread job
I have the same problem here but not with an Intel card. When using fglrx for
my ATI car, my machine hangs on logout. This problem disappears when using vesa.
Please let me know if I can give more info.

[Bug 222041] Re: unmounting a usb stick gives a stupid error

2008-05-19 Thread Job Noorman
The error message indeed disappeared, but now the icon on the desktop won't
disappear after a safely remove. If I just plug out a stick without safely
removing it, the icon will disappear but if I safely remove it first, the icon
stays on the desktop and there is no way to remove it.
Frankly, I'd rather have a useless error message than an icon for a device that
does not exist.

Please let me know if I can provide additional info.

Cheers,
Job

Re: [Bug 139455] Re: harddisk destroyed during installation

2007-09-14 Thread job
i just tried to repartition my disk. if i just delete all the
partitions, fdisk finishes without errors. if i make new partitions,
fdisk gives this warning: WARNING: Re-reading the partition table
failed with error 16: Device or resource busy.
i also noticed that the number of cylinders is way to high for this
size of disk. the output of fdisk -l:

Disk /dev/hdb: 122.9 GB, 122942324736 bytes
16 heads, 63 sectors/track, 238216 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 1008 * 512 = 516096 bytes

   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdb1   *   1   198421336+  83  Linux
/dev/hdb2   19843   23811 2000376   82  Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/hdb3   23812  238216   108060120   83  Linux

while my 250gb disk only has 30401 cylinders.

2007/9/14, Job Noorman [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
 hi david,

 my primary os is kubuntu feisty.
 but it doesn't matter what os/livecd i try to boot, when my slave is
 plugged in, it will either hang (this happened with an old gentoo
 install cd i have here) or boot very slowly (taking between 5 an 10
 minutes) showing messages like Buffer I/O error on device hdb1,
 logical block 19 (this happens when i boot feisty).

 i have attached dmesg, lsmod and lspci, i got these from my feisty,
 not from the livecd.
 please let me know if i can do more to help.

 2007/9/14, David Tomaschik [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
  With properly functioning hardware, it should be quite impossible for
  software to physically damage anything. It's possible it's just a
  driver bug. Do you still get those errors from the LiveCD? What OS is
  on your primary hard drive?

  Can you provide lspci, lsmod and a fresh (from bootup) dmesg as
  attachments?

[Bug 139455] harddisk destroyed during installation

2007-09-13 Thread job
Public bug reported:

this happened on kubuntu gutsy tribe 5.

i tried to install gutsy on my second hdd (the slave) and to prevent grub for
being overwritten, i took out the master hdd.
the live cd worked fine and there wasn't any problem partitioning the disk (i
chose guided partitioning, use entire disk hdb).
then the installation failed during the creation if the root filesystem. after
that i tried to repartition the disk using fdisk. this didn't fail but gave an
error about being unable to reread the partition table so i should reboot (i
think it was error 16).
since then, when my second hdd is plugged in, i get a lot of errors like I/O
error on sector ... during boot or shutdown.
/var/log/messages shows lines like:

[  165.279681] hdb: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
[  165.279689] hdb: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=75,
sector=75
[ 165.279700] ide: failed opcode was: unknown
[  165.279706] end_request: I/O error, dev hdb, sector 75
[  166.608609] hdb: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
[  166.608618] hdb: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=77,
sector=77
[ 166.608628] ide: failed opcode was: unknown
[  166.608634] end_request: I/O error, dev hdb, sector 77

i tried to repartition again but i'm afraid this hdd is dead.
please let me know what other information i should give to help fix this bug
because i have no idea where to look and this seems pretty serious to me.

greets,
job

[Bug 22189] Re: Selection in Konqueror is extremely slow

2007-08-05 Thread job
Just to let you know that this problem still exists running konqueror 3.5.6 on
kubuntu feisty. It doesn't matter how many files/folders you select, but how
big the surface is you select.
It happens on my own desktop pc and my girlfriends laptop.

[Bug 130464] konqueror flickering

2007-08-05 Thread job
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: konqueror

If you hold your mouse on a file/folder to show info, after removing your mouse
all the files/folders will flicker for a moment. When you are showing less
files/folders this won't happen, but it will happen easier (with less
files/folders shown) when the navigation panel is showed.
this happens with konqueror 3.5.6 on kubuntu feisty
