I have this problem running 16.04.3 with the kernel package and drivers from https://github.com/M-Bab/linux-kernel-amdgpu-binaries. Those binaries are the only solution that I've found to fixing the problem of the display going to a blank screen and won't "wake up". But when I try to use the HDMI port the screen goes blank and won't wake up and nothing gets displayed on the TV - I'm still able to ssh in from another PC and reboot the PC that's "frozen" but I don't get a login screen if I leave the HDMI cable plugged in. I have the same problem with my brand new Pavilion 17 (product: HP Pavilion Notebook (N9E13UA#ABA)) with the AMD A10-8700P Radeon R6, 10 Compute Cores 4C+6G, and graphics VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Carrizo (rev c5). I tried the graphics PPA's but "no joy". Ubuntu 16.04.2 (64 bit), kernel 4.11.9-041109-generic. /etc/openvpn/ I had my certs and keys in my encrypted /home. For some reason, the system can't see the certs and keys at boot time. I've had this problem on 2 laptops so far. Dell Inspiron 14R and Dell XPS15.
