I expect the latest version of the patch[2] (targeted for linux kernel version 3.1) to be merged into the mainline trees soon. I have applied this latest version of the backlight patch to my PPA kernels for Oneiric and Natty (Maverick still uses the older backlight patches). [Bug 599626] Re: [arrandale] X freezes after plugging in external monitor and selecting SystemPreferencesMonitors
I'm using Archlinux and suffer for this same bug. I get to, sort of fixed, after I realize the way that gnome screen settings was working. using gnome 3 and plug-in a second monitor it extend. But when I want to use only the external screen it crash the way it's described here. I try many ways to change but it always crash until I realize the representation of the screens in the gnome-settings dialog. It seems that one screen is overlapping the other (only happen when one is turn off), not at the right of it, is like in the middle. I think it was just a bug but after many times i realize that the crashed graphics was cut in the middle. It seem that the screen signal is splited into the two screens and crashed. To fixed, I just grab the screen i want to use to far away from the other (not next to it) and voila! X don't crash. I don't know this could be useful but for me fixed. [Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations
I can confirm this bug is still happening in lucid after a resolution change. It seems that the panel changes it's settings after that. I usually fix it with the gconf-editor. There I set he position of all the applets in the right using the option panel right stick. For example faster user switch applet should be in position 0 (in pixels) with panel right stick. That means that this applet would be always in the right, in every resolution. But when I change resolution and the applets move randomly I found that faster user switch applet is in position 884 without panel right stick (that means counting from left side).
