[Bug 1022124] Re: wget 1.13.4 crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc_consolidate()

2012-07-22 Thread jrssystemsnet
Giuseppe, I'm sorry, but this is a pretty odd corner case I've had
trouble reproducing outside a proprietary site I can't give anybody else
access to. I would like to help, though - if you can give me a binary
for the new version which will run on Ubuntu Precise, I can re-break the
dev copy of the site in the same way (wget only segfaulted on the
broken version of the site, which used typographic quotes in a script
src instead of standard quotes) and test your new version against it.

Please note that this is not just a problem with Software Center; apt-
get update also fails from the command line when using apt-cacher ng and
using PPAs from the Ubuntu commerical packages.

Note: there is a workaround for this issue.

You can bypass apt-cacher-ng for certain hosts by using lines like the
following in /etc/apt/apt.conf or creating a configuration file in
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/

Acquire::HTTP::Proxy::private-ppa.launchpad.net DIRECT;

[Bug 1008066] Re: Limbo game not working with NVidia TwinView

2012-07-14 Thread jrssystemsnet
Better answer than messing about with your xorg.conf (which will require
a reboot, among other problems) - instead, sudo nano
/opt/limbo/support/limbo/drive_c/Program\ Files/limbo/settings.txt and
set windowedmode=true. poof, it loads.

Jason, I downloaded your deb, used dpkg-deb -x to extract the files, and
ran the binary directly - no segfault. So, confirmed: the patch you
reverted is the culprit.

[Bug 1022124] Re: segfault in wget 1.13.4

2012-07-08 Thread jrssystemsnet
I had trouble reproducing it in a clean environment too, Jason - I made
a plain HTML file that had the include line in it and fetched that
recursively, but like you, just got a 404.

I can't give you a copy of the bad stuff, because it's a production
website - database-and-PHP, on Apache, very few actual files involved.
I could get you a gdb trace, if you'll give me an example command line
to follow, though. All I have to do is put the pretty quotes back in,
and I'll get segfaulting wget once more - and I don't mind doing that on
a dev environment.

** Description changed:

wget on Precise (wget v1.13.4) crashes with segfault when mirroring
sites. THIS IS A REGRESSION: the same behavior does not occur in wget
v1.12 as found on Ubuntu Lucid.

System being tested is fully up to date Ubuntu Precise x64 (Server),
test machine on Lucid (which does not segfault) is fully up to date

[Bug 1022124] Re: wget 1.13.4 crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc_consolidate()

2012-07-08 Thread jrssystemsnet
That's correct Jason - when I fix the include in header.php to use
normal quotes instead of typographic quotes, I can then mirror the
entire site without segfaulting. Put the typographic quotes back in,
and poof - segfault, at the same spot every time.

Interestingly, *every single page* has the bad include in it - so wget
has already mirrored several of the 404's generated by the bad include
by the time it segfaults. I don't know why. Some kind of corner case,
pretty apparently. (But, again, wget 1.12 does not segfault at all. So
it's a regression, not just a weird corner case nobody has ever ever
seen before.)

Here's your valgrind result. Interestingly, it doesn't segfault and
crash when run from valgrind - it just keeps on trucking. Nevertheless,
you can certainly see where it WAS crashing, and tons of errors
occurring there.

[Bug 1022124] [NEW] segfault in wget 1.13.4

2012-07-07 Thread jrssystemsnet
Public bug reported:

wget on Precise (wget v1.13.4) crashes with segfault when mirroring
sites. THIS IS A REGRESSION: the same behavior does not occur in wget
v1.12 as found on Ubuntu Lucid.

System being tested is fully up to date Ubuntu Precise x64 (Server),
test machine on Lucid (which does not segfault) is fully up to date
Ubuntu Lucid x64 (Server).

Sample output:

[Bug 1022124] Re: segfault in wget 1.13.4

2012-07-07 Thread jrssystemsnet
Ah HA! I don't know about the bug in wget, but I found the oddness in
the site being crawled which was *causing* wget to trip *its* bug:

script
src=”http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.5/jquery.min.js”/script

Took forever to spot this: somebody put pretty quotes in a CSS file in
a WordPress theme - browsers, wget included, don't recognize the pretty
quotes as quotes for coding purposes, so you end up trying to fetch a
really, really broken URL:

http://www.[redacted]/%E2%80%9Dhttp:/ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.5/jquery.min.js%E2%80%9D

Most browsers just try to get that URL, fail at it, and move on with
life: but the new version of wget in 12.04 actually *segfaults* when it
encounters that, which of course it only will if recursion is turned on.
If it helps: you really do ONLY get this in recursion; an attempt to
fetch the botched URL manually - either using the HTML escape codes, or
using the prettyquotes directly at the shell - results in the expected
404, not a segfault.

[Bug 1004866] [NEW] innotop frequently crashes on explain or kill query

2012-05-26 Thread jrssystemsnet
Public bug reported:

Can we get a newer version of innotop please? This one (1.7.1, which is
still the version in Ubuntu 12.04-LTS) has a several-year-old bug that
causes it to crash frequently when you ask it to explain or kill a
query, with Use of uninitialized value in hash element at
/usr/bin/innotop line 8361. This was fixed in the next version, 1.7.2,
by January of 2010.

See http://code.google.com/p/innotop/issues/detail?id=24 for details.
This happens to me on an all-too-frequent basis.

Thank you!

[Bug 998589] [NEW] remmina 1 button broken in Precise

2012-05-12 Thread jrssystemsnet
Public bug reported:

Broken on my recently-upgraded-from-Oneiric workstation:

Suddenly, clicking the resize window to remote display button (the 1
button) in a Remmina connection results in a really bizarre, stretched-
taller-vertically-than-my-monitor window with nothing but featureless
grey in the middle of it. It's basically screwed from that point on out
(right-clicking the window handle on the taskbar and maximizing will at
least bring the display visible, but all the controls - including tabs
to select different sessions - will still be missing) until I close
remmina and delete the preferences file from ~/.remmina/. After
deleting the prefs file and restarting Remmina, things will be back to
normal - but if I click the 1 button, they'll screw right back up
again.

It didn't do that in Oneiric! :)

Note: not sure if it's relevant, but I'm running lubuntu-desktop.

[Bug 962376] [NEW] spicevmc not supported in QEMU binary on Precise

2012-03-22 Thread jrssystemsnet
Public bug reported:

Although I have installed all the Spice packages needed for KVM (in
theory):

root@virt0:/usr/bin# dpkg --get-selections | grep spice
libspice-client-glib-2.0-1 install
libspice-client-gtk-2.0-1 install
libspice-server1install
python-spice-client-gtk install
qemu-kvm-spice install
spice-clientinstall
spice-client-gtkinstall

I still cannot start a guest with Spice channels added:

root@virt0:/usr/bin# virsh start dc0-test
error: Failed to start domain dc0-test
error: unsupported configuration: spicevmc not supported in this QEMU binary

I tried something incredibly hackish and just did mv /usr/bin/kvm
/usr/bin/kvm.dist ln -s /usr/bin/kvm-spice /usr/bin/kvm. This did in
fact let the VM start, but when connecting to it using spicec -h
localhost -p 5900, although the spice client DID connect, it never did
anything but display a black screen. Worse yet, VNC connections to non-
Spice-enabled hosts now ALSO only displayed a plain black screen!

What am I supposed to do in order to actually get Spice channels working
properly?

[Bug 956374] Re: KVM: Windows Server 2008 VM bluescreens on install

2012-03-15 Thread jrssystemsnet
Hm. I take it back about the problem not existing in Oneiric - I wiped
the machine and reloaded clean with Oneiric Server, and am encountering
the same bluescreen during installation at the same place. This may be
related to the hardware platform - I *JUST* did several of these
installs onto Intel i7 and AMD Opteron machines this week, but this
particular host is an Athlon X3-based machine.

Maybe there's a bug related to the hardware? I don't think it's actual
*faulty* hardware; the problem is too consistent and only occurs during
guest installation - also, I've switched from a ripped ISO image (which
worked fine for previous installs) to reading /dev/sr0 directly (from a
different disc, yet) and got the exact same bluescreen.

Retrying yet again with a non-SP1 Windows Server 2008 disc at /dev/sr0
now to see if the results are any different.

Yep, same bluescreen with Server 2008 R2, non-SP1. That's three
different discs and a ripped ISO image, all of which are known good,
which bluescreen in the same place with the same error. I'm going to
replace the motherboard and CPU with an Intel i7 and see if the problem
stays with me or not.

FWIW, the STOP error happens whether booting into the new 3.2 kernel or
the Oneiric server kernel - so this isn't a kernel problem, it seems to
be a KVM problem.

[Bug 956374] Re: KVM: Windows Server 2008 VM bluescreens on install

2012-03-15 Thread jrssystemsnet
OK, I did some more testing in between last post and logging in again to
see your request Serge - changing hardware did not resolve the problem,
but removing the VM entirely and recreating it *did*, both on the new
hardware and on the old hardware.

At this point my best guess is that something was screwy in the Precise
installation, since the bug followed me from hardware to hardware but
went away when I deleted and re-created the VM definition itself. Note:
the definition is 2 CPUs, 4096MB RAM (of 16GB available), Windows,
Server 2008, all else left to default, as created by virt-manager. If
it helps, I am using LVM2 and have a 40GB LV defined to use as raw
storage for the guest.

I did not blow away the LV or VG from the Precise install when I
reverted to Oneiric; I wiped and formatted the system LV but imported
the VG and all other LVs as they were from the Precise install.

I don't have the machine in front of me right now, but I'll run apport
for you as requested as soon as I'm in front of it again.

[Bug 944550] [NEW] system date does not recognize leap year day

2012-03-01 Thread jrssystemsnet
Public bug reported:

Today is Feb 29 2012, a leap year day. System date on all Ubuntu

to be Mar 1 2012, not recognizing the leap year.

This is the whole system date at issue, not just a calendar applet - the
date command shows erroneous date, calendar applets show erroneous
date, etc.

[Bug 938322] [NEW] fex depends on sendmail binary

2012-02-21 Thread jrssystemsnet
Public bug reported:

No mail-related packages are listed as dependencies, but the fex server
fails to produce output to a standard web browser if you don't have a
sendmail binary available. Chromium for example says the connection
was interrupted with no further detail; I only figured out what was
going on because I did telnet localhost - that way, I could see

me@banshee:~$ telnet localhost
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
/usr/share/fex/bin/fexsrv: found no sendmail

I then did

me@banshee:~$ sudo apt-get install postfix mailutils

and after installing postfix and mailutils, browsing to localhost:
in a standard browser worked as expected.

Versions of Ubuntu and Fex installed as follows:

me@banshee:~$ lsb_release -rd

[Bug 486058] Re: netbook-launcher segfault 404 error 4 in libGL.so.1.2 + const. restarting + 100%CPU

2010-03-24 Thread jrssystemsnet
Installed all available updates, including a kernel upgrade and an xorg
upgrade. Stlll getting 1 netbook-launcher segfault at 404 error 4 in
libGL.so.1.2 every second in /var/log/messages.

[Bug 486058] Re: netbook-launcher segfault 404 error 4 in libGL.so.1.2 + const. restarting + 100%CPU

2010-03-24 Thread jrssystemsnet
VNC was it - I killed the following process:

me1516 0.9 0.5 10656 5556 ?S18:49 0:01 Xvnc :1
-desktop me-netbook:1 (me) -auth /home/me/.Xauthority -geometry 800x600
-depth 16 rfbwait 3 -rfbauth /home/me/.vnc/passwd -rfbport 5901 -pn
-extension XFIXES

and the segfaults in /var/log/messages stopped.

So the next question is - how do I run a VNC session on this box WITHOUT
it invoking netbook-launcher and segfaulting it every second? That
session WAS working when I Xrdp'ed into the box, incidentally...

[Bug 486058] Re: netbook-launcher segfault 404 error 4 in libGL.so.1.2 + const. restarting + 100%CPU

2010-03-24 Thread jrssystemsnet
Final note: the real problem is that I was running that VNC session as
***the same user logged in at the console*** - netbook-launcher
segfaults if more than one instance of it is running ***as the same
user***.

I created a separate user account on the machine for the VNC session
(which is started from rc.local, independent of the console session),
restarted, and all remains fine - no segfaults in /var/log/messages.

[Bug 512253] Re: Mistake in /etc/network/interfaces keeps the system from booting

2010-02-25 Thread jrssystemsnet
This one bit me too - accidentally typoed static to statuc and I was
screwed; server would not boot until I'd started from a live USB drive,
mounted my RAID array, edited my /etc/network/interfaces and corrected
the typo, then restarted.

BEYOND annoying. This needs fixing, please!

[Bug 220005] Re: xrdp package doesn't work out of box

2010-02-15 Thread jrssystemsnet
xrdp works with Karmic's version of vncserver/Vino out-of-the-box with
no problems that I can see, and works with tightvncserver with the
disable-active-keyboard workaround. Working cookbook for multiple xrdp
logins on one machine is here:

[Bug 320393] Re: keyboard unusable after logging in

2010-02-09 Thread jrssystemsnet
Fully documented workaround for Ubuntu Karmic is here:
http://ubuntuwiki.net/index.php/Xrdp,_installing

Instructions at that page are full and complete for using xrdp to
connect to currently logged in local user's session (with Vino) and to
an arbitrary vnc-only session (with tightvncserver). Vino does not have
the keyboard hashing problem at all; tightvncserver does but the disable
active keyboard workaround DOES work - the important part is that you
MUST run gconf-editor as the user who owns the vnc session, as it's a
per-user preference, not a global one!

[Bug 200127] Re: ubuntu incorrectly believes I enjoy staring at progress bars

2009-06-16 Thread jrssystemsnet
Personally, I like the way update-manager works... if you don't want to
watch the progress, the dialog can easily be placed in the background,
so no problem.

Perhaps making a configurable option somewhere to default minimize
update-manager, for users who are particularly offended by the sight of
technical things happening?
