[Bug 1813751] Re: memory leak in glusterfs-client 3.13.2-1build1

2019-08-07 Thread Juergen Stawska
Hey,

I'm also affected.
During extensive rclone sessions, the glusterfs has been killed by oom reaper
occasionally.
Even an hourly "/bin/echo 2 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches" does not circumvent the
crash reliably.

According to slaptop "fuse_inode" consumes a growing amount of slab cache.

[Bug 1776094] [NEW] With an MVME drive pluged into a PCIe slot grub will always say that it can't write to any partition I choose.

2018-06-10 Thread Juergen Kieser
Public bug reported:

I tried eveything. Boot from USB Stick, from internal SSD or from NVME on a
PCIe adaptor. I tried to let grub install on /dev/sda or sdb or sdc or
/dev/sda1 and so on. Nothing works. Even a fully automated installation -
although not complaining - won't boot afterwards.
Maybe I should unplug the NVME PCIe adaptor and try to use only a SSD

[Bug 1024475] Re: libnss-ldap causes boot hang on 12.04 precise, 14.04 trusty, 16.04 xenial

2017-12-24 Thread Juergen Scholz
I have upgraded a 16.04 system which worked/booted perfectly with
libnss-ldap being used by nsswitch for passwd, shadow and groups to
17.10. The system took a long time to boot, could not bring up
networking properly (running dhclient in 90 second intervals, possibly a
timeout) and could not start systemd-logind.

After using nss_initgroups_ignoreusers as stated by Graham Eames in #14
and adding a new line as suggested by Thomas Werschlein in #24, the
system started bhaving normally again.

You can use the following command, which I stole from stackexchange, to
populate the nss_initgroups_ignoreusers paramter automatically:
#NSS_IGNOREUSERS="$(cut -d: -f1 /etc/passwd | sort | tr '\n' ',' | sed
's|,$||')"
#sed -i "s|^nss_initgroups_ignoreusers.*|nss_initgroups_ignoreusers
${NSS_IGNOREUSERS}|" /etc/ldap.conf

However you will have to add a new line afterwards!

In short: This issue affects 17.10, too.

Suggestion: libnss-ldap should have a paramter which makes it check the
passwd/group files and using names which are in there in the
nss_initgroups_ignoreusers paramter automatically. This should also be
the default configuration, since systemd is the default also.

[Bug 1723761] [NEW] unattended-upgrade hangs on shutdown when network is required for updates

2017-10-15 Thread Juergen Scholz
Public bug reported:

Recently an update for flashplugin-installer on xenial was available in
the ubuntu repositories.

During the installation of this package a blob is downloaded from Adobe
servers, which requires network connectivity/internet access.

Because the network interface(s) have already stopped when this package
is installed, the server cannot be reached, thus blocking the shutdown
process until a timeout kills the unattended-upgrades process.

On my machines the shutdown takes about 30 minutes in this case. The
systemd configuration is standard here, except for a few additional
services.

A possible fix could be adding After=network-online.target
NetworkManager-wait-online.service to After= in the systemd unit file.

As a workaround I pinned the flashplugin-installer to -1:
#echo >/etc/apt/preferences.d/forbid_flashplugin "\
Package: flashplugin-installer
Pin: release *
Pin-Priority: -1";

[Bug 633101] Re: Duplicity is failing with an assertion error when looking for a non-existent manifest file

2017-07-25 Thread Juergen Meixner
Duplicity fails since a few weeks, have updated my desktop to Ubuntu
15.04 and cleaned up everything, de-installed Duplicity and re-installed
it, cleaned the harddrive from all old duplicity files but still won't
work.

No clue what this means, do I need a different backup program now?.

[Bug 1656099] [NEW] SemanticScuttle broken in Ubuntu 16.04

2017-01-12 Thread Juergen Weber
Public bug reported:

SemanticScuttle can be installed in Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
but fails to work.

* the package installer creates a symlink to /etc/semanticscuttle/apache.conf
in /etc/apache2/conf.d
  but /etc/apache2/conf.d is not used
This can be fixed by including /etc/semanticscuttle/apache.conf in a site
conf.

* the database is not populated. This can be fixed by loading
  usr/share/dbconfig-common/data/semanticscuttle/install/tables.sql
This fails with ERROR 1067 (42000) at line 8: Invalid default value for
'bDatetime'
this can be fixed by adding SET sql_mode = ''; to tables.sql

* the web site brings the error
'No default configuration file config.default.php found. This is really,
really strange
in /usr/share/php/SemanticScuttle/header.php
This can be fixed by symlinking
/usr/share/semanticscuttle/data/config.default.php
  into /usr/share/php/data/SemanticScuttle

* Now an unfriendly mysql Error is displayed in the web browser, including the
database password
Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Call to undefined function mysql_connect() in
/usr/share/php/SemanticScuttle/db/mysql.php:41 Stack trace: #0
/usr/share/php/SemanticScuttle/Service/Factory.php(124):
sql_db->sql_connect('localhost', 'semanticscuttle', '*', 'semanticscuttle',

This could probably be fixed by using a PHP7 compatible MySQL Database
Layer

[Bug 1379702] Re: xfsettingsd crashes after disconnecting external screen

2016-10-23 Thread Juergen Kendzorra
Can confirm the patch works fine for me having been hit with the same
issue on an Intel NUC D54250WYK. I have manually applied the patch and
I'm fine, however would be good to see this go into the distribution as
well.

[Bug 1566183] [NEW] systemsettings does not play sound when speakers are tested

2016-04-05 Thread Juergen Scholz
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open systemsettings
2. Change to multi media pane
3. Click hardware setup
4. Select audio device (internal audio for me)
5. Click "Front left" or "Front right" to test speaker/output

Expected:
The test sounds are played

What is actually happening:
No sound is put out; stdout shows a PCM error.
Amarok and others can output sound via pulseaudio

This is the console output of systemsettings with the last three lines being
the output a click on any of the test buttons gives:

[Bug 811604] Re: uvcdynctrl spams uvcdynctrl-udev.log and fills up filesystem

2015-08-21 Thread Juergen Meixner
Same problem here since an update.

The problem isn't solved by changing the debug option to 0 in
uvcdynctrl, the system also writes this error into

-rw-r- 1 syslogadm99000161 ago 21 20:19 syslog

and

-rw-r- 1 syslogadm98818900 ago 21 19:53 kern.log

until the disk is full.

Please let me know how to cope with this.

[Bug 1428196] Re: octave does not plot anything

2015-03-05 Thread Juergen Hench
Boiled it down to octave. Solution is here:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/22506624/how-to-make-octave-use-
gnuplot-instead-of-fltk-by-default

Use the command:
   graphics_toolkit (gnuplot)
at the beginning of your octave scripts or in your private .octaverc file

e.g.
user@mycomputer:~$ nano .octaverc

pastegraphics_toolkit (gnuplot)

save file (crtl-o)

done. Test by running plot(rand(3)). You will see the usual output and
the print function will work again.

[Bug 1428196] [NEW] octave does not plot anything

2015-03-04 Thread Juergen Hench
Public bug reported:

GNU Octave, version 3.8.1, Ubuntu 14.04
gnuplot (Version 4.6 patchlevel 4, last modified 2013-10-02, Build System:
Linux x86_64)
OS: Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS, Release:14.04

package:
octave: Installed: 3.8.1-1ubuntu1
gnuplot: Installed: 4.6.4-2

sample output:

octave:1 plot(rand(10))
libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast
octave:2

I am running octave on a vnc4server headless system (a data processing
server, AMD 64-bit CPU) with a freshly installed system. I am using the
XFCE4 desktop environment launched vnc4server. Whenever I try to create
a plot (or directly write the plot data into files with the print()
function) I am getting this error message. I can, however, run gnuplot
alone, I can see the plot window and I can generate plots.

Octave 3.8 also prints the plot to a graphics file, e.g. in SVG
format. But this file is completely white. Likewise, the plot window is
displayed, but it remains white.

I have just migrated from an ubuntu 12.04 platform to 14.04, and have
kept the old computer (same type, 64-bit CPU). There, octave 3.2
produces the expected plots.

1) Is there another way to generate plots in octave into files (e.g.
svg) that are not affected by this (seemingly graphics driver) problem?

2) How could this be fixed for headless systems running a vnc server
without using the physical graphics card output?

Did anyone else notice this?

[Bug 1409865] Re: Ubiquity installer crashes with manual partition layout - looks like a regression

2015-01-12 Thread Juergen Scholz
Please excuse, that I did not got to a workaround before reporting this
bug.

It is indeed possible to have a custom partition layout with the
ubiquity installer on the KDE Live CD, when the layout is created
manually. If the deisred root (/) filesystem is btrfs it needs to be
completely fresh or created by the installer.

The reason for the issue seems to be that I had a custom subvolume
(sv_root) and that I set that subvolume as the default subvolume to
mount. Whereas the installer wants to use a subvolume named @ as the
system's root. There seems to be no way to deviate from this during
installation.

I perfectly understand that names are a question of taste. Yet there is
no reason to not support custom subvolume names.

To get a working system:
  * Do not select updates/extras
  * Open manually created LVM/dm-crypt volumes
  * Select your volumes - choose to format your /boot-device and the device
containing /
  * Install
  * The installer crashes when it needs to install the bootloader (at least it
looks that way)
  * Quit the installer
  * Mount the target into /target with dev, dev/pts, proc, sys, boot; this
needs to match the planned layout, which will be put in fstab and crypttab,
*EXACTLY*
  * Add /etc/crypttab to reflect the crypted devices correctly
  * Edit /etc/fstab to reflect the system correctly
  * Create /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/cryptroot file; this is the step I
missed at first
  * update-initramfs -u -k all
  * update-grub
  * Unmount everything
  * reboot

Thank you for taking the time to read this report. Please forgive my
grammar, since I am not a native speaker.

[Bug 1308451] Re: Epson Perfection 1670 (Snapscan) isn't working, some kind of crash after first initialisation

2014-06-27 Thread Dr. Juergen Helmers
Also does not work for me anymore ever since the update to 14.04. Have
to reboot to Windows to use the device.

scanimage -L does list the device at first, it also is listed (always)
doing an lsusb. Trying to use a scanning application (skanlite, xsane or
vuescan) each app is not able to find the device and it does not show up
any longer with scanimage -L but still under lsusb.

[Bug 1277069] [NEW] Python wrapper for liblvm2app.so is missing in built lvm2 package

2014-02-06 Thread Juergen Scholz
Public bug reported:

I want to use the python wrapper for liblvm2app.so to easily access the
LVM subsystem to do some automation for backup purposes.

The python wrapper is included in the lvm2 package sources, but does not get
built. The build log says:
checking whether to build Python wrapper for liblvm2app.so... no

I ask the maintainers of the lvm2 package to enable the --enable-
python_bindings switch for the build process, so that the lvm2 package
will contain the python extensions.

Pyhton is already used/active/installed during the build process and in
the default installation of ubuntu.

Thank you!

[Bug 1251159] Re: avconv exits with error complaining about libudev

2013-11-29 Thread juergen
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1249604 ***

Because I don't seem to get help here soon I just tried the following:

cd /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu
ln -s libudev.so libudev.so.0

and it seems to work. This strongly suggests, that one of the packages
involved was not compiled correctly.

[Bug 1249604] Re: avconv does not work - libudev.so.0 not found though installed

2013-11-29 Thread juergen
Because I don't seem to get help here soon I just tried the following:

cd /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu
ln -s libudev.so libudev.so.0

and it seems to work. This strongly suggests, that one of the packages
involved was not compiled correctly.

Hi, what is the current status?
Do you need assistance to solve this bug?
I thought this might be resolved by just recompiling the package, but it seems
to be a bigger problem, since I update my ubuntu distro every day just to
recoginze, that the problem still persists.

[Bug 1249604] [NEW] avconv does not work - libudev.so.0 not found though installed

2013-11-09 Thread juergen
Public bug reported:

Hi Ubuntu-Team,

I installed avconv over package ffmpeg
(ffmpeg_0.8.8-0ubuntu0.13.10.1_amd64.deb) but it crashes immediately with an
unresolved library dependency on libudev.so.0.
I tried to install that libary several ways to resolve the problem, but it
didn't work.

Package libudev1 is installed in version
libudev1_204-0ubuntu19_amd64.deb according apt-cache show libudev1.

Btw. the library is no installed with a version tag in the name:

#find /usr -name libudev*
/usr/lib/vlc/plugins/services_discovery/libudev_plugin.so
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libudev.so
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/pkgconfig/libudev.pc
...
Other results follow, but not in lib directories (I skipped headerfiles,
documentation etc here)

[Bug 40285] Re: libgcc_s.so.1 must be installed for pthread_cancel to work

2013-10-25 Thread Juergen Perlinger
I finally tracked it down, I think. The pthread code tries to load
libgcc_s on pthread_exit(), and this dos not work when the effective
user was changed -- many daemons switch from root to a restricted user,
and that's one way to end up in this problem. If the library is loaded
globally for the process before the user is changed, everything works.

This is a problem of the 'pthread_exit()' implementation (delayed/on-
demand load of libgcc_s) and/or the 'mmap()' implementation in the
kernel.

[Bug 1243353] [NEW] ntpd crashes with 'libgcc_s.so.1 must be installed...'

2013-10-22 Thread Juergen Perlinger
Public bug reported:

After a few minutes, ntpd crashes with the infamous libgcc_s.so.1 must
be installed for pthread_cancel to work message.

System Info:

jnperlin@hydra:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 13.10

Using strace I finally tracked it down into the runtime library:
libgcc_s.so.1 is opened, but the mmap failes with EAGAIN. I was using

# strace -f -o systrace -- ntpd -c /etc/ntp.conf.test -p
/var/run/ntpd.pid -g -u 116:125

The interesting lines are:

[Bug 40285] Re: libgcc_s.so.1 must be installed for pthread_cancel to work

2013-10-20 Thread Juergen Perlinger
I have/had trouble with ntpd on saucy, it simly stopped working after a
while with he mentioned error message. Running directly as root works
fine; running with a reduced user account does not. Setting LD_PRELOAD
works.

It seems that the user separation / priviledge dropping interferes with
the delayed load of the SO. Since several applications seem to be
affected, some of them also using special/reduced user accounts, I'm not
sure if this qualifies as a build or a setup bug, or something entirely
different.

[Bug 40285] Re: libgcc_s.so.1 must be installed for pthread_cancel to work

2013-10-20 Thread Juergen Perlinger
I was probably wrong -- it seems this is not related to running as
restricted user per se.

Using ldd shows no reference to libgcc_s in the binary, even if I build
from source and explicitly add '-lgcc_s' to the linker command line.
strace shows no signs of using libgcc_s unless put into the preload
environment. And ntpd always comes to a grinding halt when not run as
root unless the preload environment is used. Running as root does not
crash just by lucky chance, I think.

I get the same results with gcc-4.7 and gcc-4.8 on a freshly installed
x64/amd64 Saucy.

As a workaround, I put libgcc_s.so.1 into /etc/ld.so.preload, since this
should help most applications that run into this problem. Though this
only cures the symptom: It's still not clear WHY there is no reference
to the SO in the binary... Could there be some toolchain trouble?

[Bug 1215098] Re: iPhone with iOS 7 does not work on Ubuntu

2013-10-10 Thread Juergen Schmidt
ACK - same here:
iPhone 5s, iOS 7.0.2, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

FYI: iTunes in a VMWare WIndows 7 on the same machine works fine (after
disconnect from host and connect to VM).
So it is not a hardware issue and can be fixed in software.

bye, ju

since I installed a new computer using Debian. One reason for the new
computer and the choice of the OS was this bug. The old computer is
retired (eventually I will install Win7 on it).

2013-06-03 Thread Juergen N
Hi there,

am I the only one affected?

But when I see, how much I had to do just to open the message, I guess
many did not take the trouble.

I am a little frustrated, since the bug is now so old, two kernels are
troublesome (till now) and still nobody is assigned.

Guess, I have to install Win7.

[Bug 1184154] Re: After last Kernel Update (3.2.0-44) system hangs on startup

2013-05-31 Thread Juergen N
Hi,

yesterday, I got the new upstream kernel (PL 45) by normal means unto my
system (I did not have time to install it manually before).

The result is, that my system hangs even further. Now it hangs before
the X environment is fully started. It seams that the X server is
started partially, but no desktop shows up. I get some weird graphics
display (one line of graphic -- a part of the desktop?? -- over the
screen, the rest stays black) and the system hangs.

Now I have two kernel versions (3.2.44 and 3.2.45) on the system, that
don't work!

Really weird, that nobody else has troubles.

What is going on?

[Bug 1184154] Re: After last Kernel Update (3.2.0-44) system hangs on startup

2013-05-31 Thread Juergen N
@nako: I would say, this is not my bug, since I don't get swapon-messges
(see the startup protocol, I added above).

Also I don't have *any* dahdi-modules installed.

[Bug 1184154] Re: After last Kernel Update (3.2.0-44) system hangs on startup

2013-05-28 Thread Juergen N
Hi,

I never installed an upstream kernel on my system, thus I need some
hints.

I downloaded the packagelinux-
image-3.2.45-030245-generic_3.2.45-030245.201305140735_i386.deb onto my
system, but when I try to install it, the installer says, that I rather
should install the meta-package for dependencies and so on.

The Muon packager of course by default does only install stable versions
of the kernel.

How can I install it? Do I need this linux-generic package? Can you give
the related links, please?

I hope, I will not break my running system -- I only have one box here
for Kubuntu.

Regards and Thanks!

[Bug 1184154] [NEW] After last Kernel Update (3.2.0-44) system hangs on startup

2013-05-25 Thread Juergen N
Public bug reported:

My system hangs when I startup. The login screen shows up, but when I
try to enter the password, after 1-3 chars the system hangs (keyboard
and mouse freeze, system does not respond to anything except reset).

I now started the system with the older 3.2.0-41 kernel and it works.

I also attach a dmesg-file from a previous startup. The only thing I
noticed myself are the odd NFSD-messages at the end, which I did not
find in the newer dmesg (with patch 41 kernel).
