2. choice Ubuntu or gnome Wayland no way to end or work with. ( Mouse no
function but move )

3. change to tty2 and reboot.

4. start new and choise no wayland and the bug Report came.

gdm3 no mouse function but move.

gnome Displaysystems not boot and then boot no mouse function but move.

lightdm goes into Automatic login. why? Have changed this manually.

gdm3 is Ubuntu adjusted, why. But no mouse function to change this, no
click possible.

[Bug 89860] Re: /proc/acpi/button/lid/*/state always says "open"

2012-07-12 Thread knarf
There is a workaround for this bug which has plagued the HP Compaq
nc6120 I'm using ever since, well, forever. I was put on the track of
this workaround by reading an old Advogato blog entry
(http://www.advogato.org/person/mjg59/diary/62.html) where someone by
the handle of 'mjg59' tells about his adventures in ACPI-land and the
possible use of setpci to get around ACPI table bugs (which I consider
this to be). He does not state which register he changed but I found
more information elsewhere which implicated register 0xbb. As to which
value to poke there I have experimented a bit as this seems to differ
between systems. On the nc6120 the following command, when executed
after *each* ACPI-event, restores functionality to the lid switch:

sudo setpci -s 00:1f.0 bb.b=04

I attached a tarball containing two ACPI scripts which make that this
command is executed after every ACPI event. Using these scripts, my
machine works as expected: the display goes black when the lid switch is
pressed/the lid is closed. Opening the lid brings the display back to
life. Monitoring the state of the lid switch (cat
/proc/acpi/button/lid/C1E9/state on this system) shows the reported
state to reflect the actual condition, where before it would stay stuck
on 'closed'.

So, if you are also bitten by this bug - which has been around for
*years* - you might want to try the setpci command I mentioned. If this
works (directly or after changing the poked value) you might want to
give these ACPI scripts a try. If you had to change the poked value to
make it work, you should also change the value in the
/etc/acpi/handler.sh script.

** Attachment added: "Two ACPI scripts to enable the LID switch on affected
systems to be read consistently"

[Bug 885988] Re: The software center Ain't really working at all...

2011-11-12 Thread Frank "knarF" M. Eriksson
Interesting enough, I was forced to re-install my little sisters whole
computer. Grub said that there was no such partition, and indeed there
was not much of any partition there (All I could find was scrambled
data, no tools I installed on the live “CD” could do anything about it).
And after I had re-installed it, I did not update the software as I
usually do.

By not doing that, the software-centre did not come crashing down on me,
albeit slow, I succeeded to install a few things; But then I installed
aptitude and gdebi, seems like I cannot set gdebi to be the default
application to handle .deb-files in nautilus?

I can easily set that .deb-files should be opened with gdebi in thunar,
which is one of four recommended programs, after that follows a list of
god know what ;)

[Bug 885988] [NEW] The software center Ain't really working at all...

2011-11-03 Thread Frank "knarF" M. Eriksson
Public bug reported:

This does not really affect only myself, but also my little sisters computer.
You can't really browse software center, it's REALLY slow...

Also there is two banners at the top, it shows "OpenShot" and "Braid" --
it did that on my sisters computer a few days ago too.

But, you can't click these banners; and I believe that the intention is
that you should be able to do so and get directed to some program
descriptor thingie.

Also, I tried to search for "OpenShot" -- but the software center did
not respond to that command (it did not hung up).

I have not been able to install a single program with the software
center, so I've been forced to use the terminal; Which is not a too big
deal for me, but really, my sister is 11yrs and I can't really expect
that she will grok the terminal anytime soon (I've tried to learn her
git via the terminal once, which did not work out too well as she did
not want to type any commands herself. Luckily, there were a few
graphical frontends. I installed like five and told her to use to one
she likes the most).

I've bought a few games like braid, osmos and a few others, both to
myself and my sister -- and I hate that I have to go to her laptop and
install the stuff for her... You have major regressions going on with
Ubuntu! It used to be _easier_ than windows!

Also (in the past), the software center were the way I found out about
useful software.

[Bug 12040] Re: GNOME "Main Menu" panel applet slow to open on first click (NOT compiz related)

2011-03-16 Thread knarf
@BavarianPH: it seems that there are people in the project who interpret
any negative statement about Ubuntu, or any positive statement against
one of its 'avowed enemies' as 'heresy' and use that to 'punish' the
'heretic' who dared to utter it. This happens in the forums - which I no
longer use since the forum moderators are part of the problem - and
seems to happen here as well.

This is counterproductive and sad. Free software in general, and Ubuntu
in particular should be approached with an open mind. If something does
not work as it should it needs to be changed. If some other program -
whether it be open or proprietarty, free or fee does not matter - does
it better it should be possible to state this without being accused of
heresy, punished by forum gods or demoted by some arbitrary measure.

[Bug 690244] Re: All gtk2.0 apps crash in gtkicontheme due to use of uninitialized parameter 'theme_name'

2010-12-14 Thread knarf
Deleting the /usr/share/icons/gnome/icon-theme.cache file brought gtk
back to life. I use a theme called 'wild-shine' but tried with many
other themes. The gnome icon-theme seems to be used by all of those.

As to what caused that cache file to become corrupt is a question I have
no answer to. These problems started when it became impossible to log in
using gdm - the greeter worked but as soon as the session was started it
was killed. Were there recent updates to the cache handling code which
could have caused this mishap? If so it might be a good idea to have
package updates delete stale cache files.

[Bug 690244] [NEW] All gtk2.0 apps crash in gtkicontheme due to use of uninitialized parameter 'theme_name'

2010-12-14 Thread knarf
Public bug reported:

Running up to date natty (11.04, last update Tue Dec 14 17:30)

All gtk2.0 and many Qt apps crash in gtkicontheme due to an
uninitialized parameter (theme_name). This currently makes it impossible
to log in through X since the gdm greeter also crashes. When logging in
using startx and a non-gtk based session - a plain xterm or a non-gtk
dependent window manager like Xmonad - any application which directly or
indirectly uses the gtk theme engine crashes. This includes Qt apps
which use the gtk theme engine.

A sample trace looks like this, created using gcalctool but it could
have been made using any application which uses gtk or the gtk theme
engine:

[Bug 446498] Re: /usr/sbin/update-software-center is very slow on armel

2010-11-24 Thread knarf
Installing a new package in a terminal is also slowed down tremendously
by this memory and processor hogging bit of python prototype code. An
example might help so here it goes. I just installed the new Opera beta
by downloading the package and pointing dpkg -i at it. Dpkg went to

Aha, software center again. This took 10 minutes to run. After that,

Yes, again software-center spoils the party. It took another 10 minutes.
Dpkg awoke from this bit of python drudgery:

This bug report was prepared on a Thinkpad T23 (1.2 GHz PIII-m with 768
MiB) running up to date Natty - which is starting to resemble Debian by
virtue of having the obese Ubuntu-specials purged.

A note to the devs: do not use a prototyping language to implement your
basic infrastructure. Python may be a nice prototyping language but it
is a memory and cpu hog. Please, use a compiled language or at least a
less hoggy interpreted language to create essential pieces of
infrastructure like the package management system. This stuff needs to
run FAST and reliable.

[Bug 610083] Re: thunderbird segfaults with the latest appmenu-gtk

2010-08-17 Thread knarf
This crash is not limited to Thunderbird 3.x: Firefox 4.x hangs on
startup while Seamonkey 2.x crashes on startup due to appmenu-gtk.

The affected seamonkey identifies itself as follows:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:2.0b4pre) Gecko/20100815
SeaMonkey/2.1a3pre

Firefox 4.x:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:2.0b4pre) Gecko/20100816
Minefield/4.0b4pre

Remove the appmenu-gtk package to restore these programs back to
functionality. Maybe it is a better idea to blacklist all recent
xulrunner apps?

[Bug 196688] Re: GPM in Hardy seems to have a memory leak

2010-04-20 Thread knarf
I just got bitten by this bug on Lucid. Currently gnome-power-manager
uses ~120 MB resident memory after running for about two weeks:

$ ps auxw|grep gnome-power-manager|grep -v grep
frank 2735 0.0 16.1 186140 123588 ? SApr03 8:09
gnome-power-manager

Most of that memory is used on the heap as can be seen in
/proc/[pid]/smaps:

08ea5000-11d9e000 rw-p 00:00 0 [heap]
Size: 146404 kB
Rss: 116416 kB
Pss: 116416 kB
Shared_Clean: 0 kB
Shared_Dirty: 0 kB
Private_Clean: 82896 kB
Private_Dirty: 33520 kB
Referenced:47516 kB
Swap: 29968 kB
KernelPageSize:4 kB
MMUPageSize: 4 kB

A 146 MB heap seems a bit overdone for a trivial program like
gnome-power-manager.

This machine has gone through some updates without being rebooted. That
should not be a problem - this is not Windows after all - but maybe
gnome-power-manager should have been restarted after one of those
updates?

[Bug 467474] Re: netbook-launcher crashed with SIGSEGV in glGetString()

2010-04-14 Thread knarf
I'll send a message to the mesa-dev list to see what the reaction is.
While the patch makes it possible to run software which depends on RGBA
visuals it is clear that it does not always work as it should, eg. text
in clutter shows up as black or white rectangles. This might be caused
by a faulty implementation of mipmapping or some other bug which was
hidden hitherto.

Do you happen to have a media player like rhythmbox running in the
background? Some of those also try to mount MTP devices and will happily
mount your camera making it inaccessible to other programs.

For rhythmbox the solution is simple: disable the MTP plugin.

I noticed that the original submitter runs the framebuffer at 16bpp

to use clutter he'll have to switch to 24bpp.

[Bug 467474] Re: netbook-launcher crashed with SIGSEGV in glGetString()

2010-03-18 Thread knarf
I have patched the savage driver so it exposes modes with non-zero alpha
depth. The patch only changes the modes which the driver exposes, I have
not verified that all exposed modes are actually functional. Using the
patched driver clutter applications are functional (within the
constraints of the hardware of course) and the segfaults disappear.

The patch applies to mesa-7.7 as used in Lucid.

Again, this patch makes clutter apps work but I have not verified that
all exposed modes are actually supported by the driver and the hardware.
This is the mode table after applying the patch according to glxinfo on
a 24 bit framebuffer:

[Bug 467474] Re: netbook-launcher crashed with SIGSEGV in glGetString()

2010-03-17 Thread knarf
OK, I have made some progress with Clutter and the savage. There are two
things at play here:

1) clutter always requests non-zero alpha depth when looking for
visuals. The savage driver does not support non-zero alpha depth so it
does not return any visuals. Clutter uses RGB visuals by default but
clutter-gtk wants RGBA. I patched clutter to not request non-zero alpha
depth and can now run clutter-based apps.

2) clutter fails to catch the failure to acquire a visual - and hence an
OpenGL context - and blindly tries to call OpenGL functions. This is not
possible without a context, which leads to the segfaults seen here (and
elsewhere).

I changed clutter to get rid of this request and suddenly it works -
sort of. That alpha request is there for a reason so the savage driver
should be changed to either support alpha (difficult if the hardware
does not offer support) or ignore the alpha request.

For now clutter is semi-usable when patched. I'm running clutter 1.2.2
so the patch is not applicable to the version currently used in Ubuntu.
I'll have a look at implementing alpha support in the savage driver
which would be the real solution to this problem.

[Bug 293201] Re: Crash with ClutterGLX critical

2010-03-17 Thread knarf
OK, I have made some progress with Clutter and the savage. The failure
to acquire a visual is caused by clutter requesting non-zero alpha depth
when checking for available visuals. The savage driver does not support
alpha so it never returns a usable visual. I changed clutter to get rid
of this request and suddenly it works - sort of. That alpha request is
there for a reason so the savage driver should be changed to either

[Bug 293201] Re: Crash with ClutterGLX critical

2010-03-14 Thread knarf
This problem is increasing in importance as Clutter gets added to more
and more programs. I just tried to import some photos using gthumb:

$ gthumb

(gthumb:24916): ClutterGLX-CRITICAL **: Unable to find suitable GL
visual.

** ERROR **: Unable to initialize GtkClutter
aborting...

GLX works, glxgears is happy, depth is set to 24 bits.

This problem with Clutter should be fixed in some way as it threatens to
make a whole range of machines unusable just because their video drivers
do not support some non-essential feature which Clutter insists on
using. Those machines are perfectly capable of running modern software
as can be seen by the fact that I use a Thinkpad T23 as my main machine.

Clutter is non-essential and should be made optional if it can not be
changed so it does not depend on GL_ARB_texture_non_power_of_two and/or
GL_ARB_texture_rectangle.

[Bug 355801] Re: Printing (HP LJ) slow/fails

2010-01-11 Thread knarf
Same here on Lucid as well as before on Karmic. Printing PDF to my
networked Laserjet 2200 either results in a vey slow job or a
blinking attention light and no output but mostly it just silently
fails. Printing the same document using the foomatic/pxlmono driver
works but gives mediocre quality compared to PS. Converting the PDF to
PS and printing it via the printer's FTP server works. Printing test
pages works. Printing self-test pages works.

There seems to be something amiss with the way postscript is handled in
cups.

Your build servers are out of date, please update them. Current version
of libpoppler on Lucid is 0.12.2-2.1ubuntu1, not 0.12.0-0ubuntu2. The
build failure occurs as stated with *current* Lucid... One of the
changes between 0.12.0 and 0.12.2 is the aforementioned patch.

[Bug 489791] [NEW] Compilation fails because of changed interface in libpoppler

2009-11-28 Thread knarf
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

The current cups package does not compile since an interface in
libpoppler has changed. The interface change in libpoppler comes from
this patch:

http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/poppler/2009-October/005198.html

This has caused the interface to GfxColorSpace::parse(Object *obj1) to
change to GfxColorSpace::parse(Object *obj1, Gfx *gfx)

This causes the compilation of the debian-added pdftopdf filter to fail:

[Bug 488752] Re: pdftopdf crashes

2009-11-28 Thread knarf
This is not a bug in poppler. It is a bug in pdftopdf as bundled with
cups. Currently cups can not be compiled with the latest libpoppler
because the interface to iccColorSpaceCache (in libpoppler) has changed
as can be seen in the patch linked to above.

[Bug 475811] Re: crashes when a filename uses ":"

2009-11-28 Thread knarf
There is a notice in Mono's Uri.cs that there is a difference between
Mono 1.2 and Mono 2.0 in how scheme name characters are checked:

// Check scheme name characters as specified in RFC2396.
// Note: different checks in 1.x and 2.0

(mcs/class/System/System/Uri.cs:1380)

Maybe that is what triggered this bug?

[Bug 475811] Re: crashes when a filename uses ":"

2009-11-26 Thread knarf
Sebastien: the easiest way to import a 'buggy' image (?) is to remove
the colon from the name... or is that not what you meant?

To get f-spot to run as it is (without any patches) I'd suggest changing
the name of the picture on the filesystem and in the database. Even
though you could %-encode colons in the database this currently does not
seem to work well as they get written back as ordinary colons by f-spot.

To change the name in the database I'd suggest dumping it, editing the
dump and importing it again:

sqlite3 .config/f-spot/photos.db .dump > photos.dump

edit the resulting dump (change the offending colons into periods or
underscores or whatnot)
change the filenames on the filesystem in a similar way

import the database:

cat photos.dump|sqlite3 photos.db

If sqlite3 does not give any errors and the database has a sane size
(slightly smaller than the original photos.db) you can try to start
f-spot with it:

mv .config/f-spot/photos.db .config/f-spot/photos.db.org
mv photos.db config/f-spot/photos.db
f-spot --debug

If it starts and the offending pictures are visible you're good to go.
If it crashes you might have forgotten a colon or two or messed up the
database in another way. If the offending pictures are missing you might
have forgotten to rename them in the filesystem.

[Bug 475811] Re: F-spot crashes when i start It.

2009-11-25 Thread knarf
It does seem to be the colon in the filename which causes the crash. I
ran a photos.db through an instrumentd f-spot with the following result:

...
...
AppendValues ( Gtk.TreeIter, 2003%20Kitchen%20Before)
AppendValues ( Gtk.TreeIter, Michigan)
AppendValues ( Gtk.TreeIter, Volume%202)
AppendValues ( Gtk.TreeIter, Volume%203)
AppendValues ( Gtk.TreeIter, 2005-02-12--14:13:46)
[Warn 00:53:34.914] Caught an exception - URI scheme must start with a letter
and must consist of one of alphabet, digits, '+', '-' or '.' character. (in
`System')

Notice that as soon as a name with a colon in it shows up f-spot børks.
A look at mcs/class/System/System/Uri.cs (part of Mono) shows what
happens: as soon as there is a colon in a string and that colon is not
at position 0 (which is always an error) or position 1 (which is
interpreted as following an MS-DOS/Windows drive letter) the part of the
string before the colon is interpreted as an URI scheme (eg http, file,
ftp, etc.). This will naturally lead to an error as (in the above
example) ' 2005-02-12--14' is not a valid scheme.

The solution is for f-spot to %-encode colons in the string before it
gets handled by any of Mono's URI-handling functions. It does this for
spaces (->%20) but not for colons (->%3A). This should be changed...

This are the salient bits from Uri.cs:

pos = uriString.IndexOf (':');
if (pos == 0) {
return "Invalid URI: The format of the URI
could not be determined.";
} else if (pos < 0) {
// It must be Unix file path or Windows UNC
if (uriString [0] == '/' &&
Path.DirectorySeparatorChar == '/'){
ParseAsUnixAbsoluteFilePath (uriString);
if (kind == UriKind.Relative)
isAbsoluteUri = false;

} else if (uriString.Length >= 2 && uriString
[0] == '\\' && uriString [1] == '\\')
ParseAsWindowsUNC (uriString);
else {
/* Relative path */
isAbsoluteUri = false;
path = uriString;
}
return null;
} else if (pos == 1) {
if (!IsAlpha (uriString [0]))
return "URI scheme must start with a
letter.";
// This means 'a:' == windows full path.
string msg = ParseAsWindowsAbsoluteFilePath
(uriString);
if (msg != null)
return msg;
return null;
}

// scheme
scheme = uriString.Substring (0, pos).ToLower
(CultureInfo.InvariantCulture);

// Check scheme name characters as specified in RFC2396.
// Note: different checks in 1.x and 2.0
if (!CheckSchemeName (scheme))
return Locale.GetText ("URI scheme must start
with a letter and must consist of one of alphabet, digits, '+', '-' or '.'
character.");

[Bug 293201] Re: Crash with ClutterGLX critical

2009-11-10 Thread knarf
To respond to my own question: I had a look at clutter (clutter/glx

GL_ARB_texture_rectangle to this driver I have not got a clue yet...

[Bug 428619] Re: pulseaudio crackle/distortion with cs46xx on latest update

2009-09-22 Thread knarf
Looking at the differences between svolume_sse.c from pulseaudio 0.9.16
and the current one I noticed that those changes are only cosmetical -
only a comment has changed. It does not make sense to try to patch
that... But you can of course try the patch I posted in #19 and see if
that works for you.

It is quite simple really. Assuming you...

- keep your sources in /usr/src
- downloaded the patch to your home directory
- have not built pulseaudio before so there are no pulseaudio*.deb or
libpulse*.deb packages in /usr/src

...it goes something like this:

(first get the build dependencies:)

 sudo apt-get build-dep pulseaudio

(now get the source:)

 cd /usr/src
 apt-get source pulseaudio

(patch the source:)
(cd whatever directory the source was installed to, currently pulseaudio-0.9.18
so...)

 cd pulseaudio-0.9.18
 patch -p1 < ~/revert_svolume_mmx_to_known_good_version.patch

(build the binary packages:)

 fakeroot dpkg-buildpackage -b

(install pulseaudio and libpulse:)
(while still in the pulseaudio source directory, directly after the build has
finished:)

 sudo dpkg -i ../libpulse0_*.deb ../pulseaudio_*.deb

As to how to test the new build depends on how you use it. If you run a
sound-generating package like mplayer or totem it should be sufficient
to kill any running pulseaudio daemon with:

 pulseaudio -k

It should autostart the next time you start any sound-generating
program... unless you have autospawn=no in your personal pulseaudio
config of course... in that case you need to start it manually.

If you run some sound-generating daemon like mpd you may need to restart
that to make sure it starts a fresh copy of pulseaudio.

Now try to change volume...

PS Scott #20, why would there be any danger of hosing the system by
fixing a bug? Those {unique} parameters currently cause problems, they
are a new addition to the rules file, it works fine without (just check
the file used in Debian for an example). If and when udev starts
supporting them they can be put back in the config file. For now they
should not be there as they cause problems.

[Bug 428619] Re: pulseaudio crackle/distortion with cs46xx on latest update

2009-09-21 Thread knarf
I should add that I run pulseaudio on a Thinkpad T23 with a Pentium
III-m which does NOT support SSE2. As I do not have any systems
available which do support SSE2 I can not test the validity of
svolume_sse.c (which actually contains SSE2 code, not SSE...). Someone
else, like the original bug reporter (who seems to run a Pentium 4 which
does support SSE2) should try to revert svolume_sse.c back to a previous
version and test with that.

[Bug 428619] Re: pulseaudio crackle/distortion with cs46xx on latest update

2009-09-21 Thread knarf
OK, I found it. The problem - in my case at least - lies in
svolume_mmx.c (not svolume_sse.c). Reverting that file back to the
previous version gets rid of the problem. These are the changes which
caused the appearance of the distorted sound problem on my box:

2009-09-21 Thread knarf
Another observation: the volume control on a client (in my case mpd)
does not actually change the volume. There are three states:

volume maxed, sound OK
volume between maxed and minimum, sound distorted at full volume
volume minimized, no sound

2009-09-21 Thread knarf
After modifying that incantation a bit by adding PULSE_NO_SIMD=1 to the
mpd init script as mpd starts its own version of pulseaudio the noise
dissappeared... in other words the recent problems with distorted sound
ARE caused by the SSE-optimized code... There are very few changes to
the actual assembler code in svolume_sse.c, I'll try a version of
current pulseaudio with these changes reverted to see if that makes a
difference... be right back...

Same problem here on different hardware running latest pulseaudio from
ubuntu-audio-dev. Symptoms are the same: sound is sort of allright when
the volume client is maxed, anything below that sounds from bad to
worse. Being that the symptoms seem to be volume-related I wonder if
this is due to some bug in the new SSE-optimized volume code...

[Bug 419509] Re: no tab completion on path that contains a space

2009-09-10 Thread knarf
Broken in Karmic here as well, seems to coincide with the introduction
of bash 4.

To get tab completion working again I used a relatively ancient version
of /etc/bash_completion (RELEASE: 20060301) in combination with the
existing /etc/bash_completion.d directory. This file (which comes from
an earlier Ubuntu-release, ask me not which as I found it as
/etc/bash_completion.ucf-old indicating it was replaced sometime in the
past by the ucf (man 1 ucf) program on a machine which has not seen a
clean install since 6.04) seems to work OK, it might not offer all the
niceties (whatever those may be) of more recent bash completion
developments but it works with spaces...

The file is attached to this message. You know the standard drill about
using script/program files you download from the net... do a diff -u
between the current version of /etc/bash_completion and this one to see
what changed... to use this file just copy it to /etc/bash_completion
after moving the original /etc/bash_completion to
/etc/bash_completion.org or something similar.

[Bug 418448] Re: pulseaudio crashed with SIGILL in pa_volume_memchunk()

2009-09-06 Thread knarf
As the main problem of the current pulseaudio code lies in the fact that
it claims to use 'SSE' optimised code while it actually uses SSE2 (or
later) optimized code, the simplest solution is to change the activation
threshold for these optimisations. The attached patch achieves this and
works on my T23.

A better solution would be to try to SSE-optimise the code for those
SSE2-challenged processors but that is something for a later hour...

[Bug 402767] Re: multisearch add on blocks the functionality of firefox location bar

2009-07-24 Thread knarf
To whoever lies behind the decision to put a revenue-gathering extension
in the base browser package: this is not the way to win support from
free software users. If you want to enable your users to assist in
gathering revenue for your company or group do it in a totally open and
completely voluntary way by:

- publishing this extension on your main page, explain that the revenues
gathered by it help to contribute to this software distribution
- adding it as a suggested package for the browser packages
- have the browser show a document on first load which gives the user a choice
to install this extension

Doing it in the way it is currently done is a relic from times gone by
when commercially driven companies used every trick in the book - and
some which had not been written about yet - to try to extract more
revenue from their customers. Canonical and the Ubuntu project were
supposed to break with that tradition, not continue it.

Please change the way this extension is published. And please don't try
other tricks like this again. I like the fact that I can - or at least
used to be able to - trust the packages in the repository. I'd hate to
have to go through every single package with a fine-toothed comb to weed
out the crap, that reminds me to much of the way things are done on the
other side of the fence.

So please don't jump that fence. The grass is greener here anyway...

[Bug 385616] [NEW] Pulseaudio dies after hogging the cpu for a while, points blame at alsa: 'Mhmm, actually there is nothing to rewind'

2009-06-10 Thread knarf
Public bug reported:

Pulseaudio stops playing sound and starts hogging the cpu with regular
intervals since updating to karmic. After hogging around for a bit it
dies, only to be revived like a Phoenix a few moments later. This new
instance will play sound for a bit but eventually it also fails (rinse,
repeat).

Running pulseaudio -v in a terminal gives the following insight:

[Bug 291760] Re: network-manager roams to (none) ((none))

2009-04-19 Thread knarf
I can confirm this problem with a homebrew 2.6.30-rc2 kernel and the
ath5k driver. As to whether networkmanager, wpa_supplicant or any other
piece of the wireless action is the culprit here I can not give an
answer. I do suspect that this has something to do with the ath5k driver
(and, obviously, other drivers as well: rtl8187, broadcom, others?) not
being able to keep up a connection while networkmanager/wpa_supplicant
does a scan for available networks. According to an OLPC bug report
(https://dev.laptop.org/ticket/9048) the scans can be disabled using
wpa_cli. I have not tried this though.

Here's a new version of the patch which corrects a problem for those who
actually want to build the gnome-applets package WITH mini-commander,
instead of using an external mini-commander. The bug was that I used the

[Bug 347653] [NEW] package gnome-applets-data 2.26.0-0ubuntu1 [modified: usr/lib/bonobo/servers/GNOME_MiniCommanderApplet.server] failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite `/usr/lib/bonobo/server

2009-03-23 Thread knarf
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

gnome-applets still, after 3 years, contains the
'/usr/lib/bonobo/servers/GNOME_MiniCommanderApplet.server' file for the
long-deprecated mini_commander applet. This makes it impossible to use a
stand-alone version of mini_commander without resorting to ugly hacks.
As the applet is not in the package the server file has no business
being there either. I have submitted a patch to resolve this issue
several months ago but did not get any reaction from the package
maintainer.

Please please please REMOVE that stale server file! Don't make things
difficult which should be easy. If upstream insists on installing that
file just remove it in debian/rules as is done with so many other
unwanted files. I am sure that I am not the only one using
mini_commander instead of the overweight, disfunctional and misnamed
'deskbar' replacement. Anyone who 'just' wants a command line applet in
the panel is much better served by mini_commander as that a) actually
sits in the panel and b) uses much less memory and c) is much faster and
d) starts much faster and and and... so why throw up - or refuse to
remove - a barrier to those who happen to dislike 'deskbar-applet'?

I can resubmit the patch if needed, it is short and sweet and simple and
non-invasive.

[Bug 332086] [NEW] package python-support 0.8.7ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: package python-support is already installed and configured

2009-02-20 Thread knarf
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt

This appeared during a dist-upgrade. Since when is it considered an
error to update/install a package which has already been installed? I
know that dpkg has no qualms about reinstalling packages:

s dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/python-support_0.8.7ubuntu1_all.deb
[sudo] password for frank:
(Reading database ... 293841 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace python-support 0.8.7ubuntu1 (using
.../python-support_0.8.7ubuntu1_all.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement python-support ...
Setting up python-support (0.8.7ubuntu1) ...

Processing triggers for man-db ...

So something in apt complains about something which dpkg thinks is
fine...

[Bug 328270] [NEW] autoconf failed to install

2009-02-11 Thread knarf
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: autoconf

This came up during the last dist-upgrade in Jaunty. An attempt to
manually install the package from cache fails like this:

s dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/autoconf_2.63-2ubuntu1_all.deb
[sudo] password for frank:
(Reading database ... 283820 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace autoconf 2.61-7ubuntu1 (using
.../autoconf_2.63-2ubuntu1_all.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement autoconf ...
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/autoconf_2.63-2ubuntu1_all.deb
(--install):
trying to overwrite `/usr/share/man/man1/autoreconf.1.gz', which is also in
package autoconf2.13
Processing triggers for man-db ...
Errors were encountered while processing:
/var/cache/apt/archives/autoconf_2.63-2ubuntu1_all.deb

Looks like a conflict between autoconf and autoconf2.13:

apt-cache policy autoconf
autoconf:
 Installed: 2.61-7ubuntu1
 Candidate: 2.63-2ubuntu1
 Version table:
2.63-2ubuntu1 0
500 http://se.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
*** 2.61-7ubuntu1 0
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

fr...@ostrogoth:~$ apt-cache policy autoconf2.13
autoconf2.13:
 Installed: 2.13-59
 Candidate: 2.13-59
 Version table:
*** 2.13-59 0
500 http://se.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

As expected, removing autoconf2.13 removes the conflict and makes it
possible to install autoconf

[Bug 267371] Re: [gvfs] [smb] Damaged OpenOffice files from samba shares

2009-02-10 Thread knarf
I am seeing file corruption when copying from a Windows NT4 server to an
up-to-date version of Jaunty with a 2.6.29-rc2 kernel (but also using
the stock Jaunty kernel) using gvfs. The files in question have NOTHING
to do with OOo, they are JPEG's from a digital camera. Files are
reliably corrupted every time, the corruption also seems to be more or
less identical judging by the way the images are mangled. The NT4 server
share is mounted over a (vpnc -...- Cisco PIX) VPN which is also used
(without problems) to run a VNC session to the Windows server. Copying
the same files from the same server using scp works fine so the files
themselves are OK.

The main difference between the problem described in this bug report and
my experience is that I get corruption which is unrelated to
OpenOffice.org. This bug does not seem to be confined to OOo...

[Bug 34732] Re: mini-commander missing in 2.14.0ubuntu1

2009-02-06 Thread knarf
Now, almost three years after the initial bug report this problem still
remains...

I made a small patch to get rid of all traces of mini-commander in the
gnome-applets package when it is not built. If anyone knows of a valid
reason to keep the server file for a non-existent applet around please
speak up, otherwise please add this patch to the mix so those who choose
not to have their memory eaten by a disfunctional deskbar-applet still
can install an external mini-commander without having to --force-all the
installation.

actually built"
