For me, it occurs always when using rectangular selection. But gnome-
screenshot does not hang, it continues working, leaving save/copy to
clipboard dialog and barely visible transparent window.

Also, if right ctrl is bound as layout switch button, pressing ctrl+c,
ctrl+v, etc makes focus go away too, either when pressing left ctrl or
right ctrl with c, v, etc.

2014-05-26 Thread kolen
Pressing ctrl+backspace also causes this behaviour, although not defined
in "Shortcuts" in "System settings". This makes text input fields on
several webpages to glitch (instead of deleting last word, it moves
cursor to the start of text, deletes at other point, etc). This is
extremely annoying.

[Bug 1244090] Re: Pressing any global keyboard shortcut causes temporary loss of focus

2014-04-29 Thread kolen
Discovered that loss of focus is caused by GrabAccelerator dbus method,
handled by compiz. Gnome/unity-settings-daemon does not make focus go
away by itself. You can try following script:

#!/usr/bin/python
import dbus
bus = dbus.SessionBus()
o = bus.get_object('org.gnome.Shell', '/org/gnome/Shell')
code = o.GrabAccelerator('1', 0, dbus_interface='org.gnome.Shell')
try:
raw_input("Grab set to key '1', press Enter to continue and ungrab")
finally:
  print o.UngrabAccelerator(code, dbus_interface='org.gnome.Shell')

It sets grab to '1' key, then pressing '1' causes the same effects of
losing focus (blink of cursor in terminal; cancel of rename in Nautilus,
etc).

I didn't remove unity-settings-daemon from this bug because maybe it
uses this dbus method for wrong purpose (maybe it's not suited for
binding keys for switching keyboard).

Also, builtin monitor appears as "Off" in settings, and on the right

[Bug 1244548] Re: Keyboard shortcut for changing keyboard layout does not work on lock screen

2014-04-25 Thread kolen
Keyboard switching in Ubuntu desktop is handled by media-keys plugin of
unity-settings-daemon. Maybe this plugin does not work on lock screen at
all (maybe it is bound to user session, not lock/login screen)?

[Bug 1244090] Re: Pressing keyboard shortcut to switch keyboard layout causes temporary loss of focus

2014-04-25 Thread kolen
Some details: in Ubuntu 13.10, when reported, focus went back when
releasing shortcut key/keys, in recent version (Ubuntu 14.04) focus go
back shortly after pressing key(s), while keys are still in pressed
position; still triggering annoying behavior in some apps (i.e. twitter
reply box).

** Also affects: unity-settings-daemon
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Summary changed:

- Pressing keyboard shortcut to switch keyboard layout causes temporary loss of
focus
+ Pressing any global keyboard shortcut causes temporary loss of focus

** Description changed:

- When pressing keyboard shourtcut for switching keyboard layout, focus
- temporary switches from active text input to something else, then
- restores back when releasing keys used to switch. Maybe even active
- window loses focus, but window frame does not shows this (window header
- remains to look active).
+ When pressing any global keyboard shourtcut (configurable via System
+ settings -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts; i.e. for switching keyboard layout,
+ volume up/down), focus temporary switches from active text input to
+ something else, then restores back shortly. Maybe even active window
+ loses focus, but window frame does not shows this (window header remains
+ to look active).

- For example: when I press ctrl+shift here, when writing this
- description, yellow frame disappears from text input box, text caret
- disappears too; they appear again when releasing ctrl+shift. The same
- occurs in all other programs, i.e. terminal.
+ For example: when I press ctrl+shift here to switch keyboard layout,
+ when writing this description, yellow frame disappears from text input
+ box, text caret disappears too; they appear again when releasing
+ ctrl+shift. The same occurs in all other programs, i.e. terminal.

It causes serious annoyance, for example in Twitter when losing focus in
Reply text box, reply rolls up and I have to click it again with mouse
and set caret to correct place each time I switch keyboard layouts.

Other key combinations, not only ctrl+shift, also cause this.

+ It is especially annoying when using keyboard layout switch shortcut
+ handled by the same subsystem (media-keys plugin):
+
+ case SWITCH_INPUT_SOURCE_KEY:
+ case SWITCH_INPUT_SOURCE_BACKWARD_KEY:
+ do_switch_input_source_action (manager, type);
+ break;
+
+ (Original gnome-settings-daemon, from which unity-settings-daemon was
+ forked, does not use media-keys plugin to switch keyboard layout).

[Bug 1244090] Re: Pressing keyboard shortcut to switch keyboard layout causes temporary loss of focus

2014-04-25 Thread kolen
Discovered that it's not related solely to keyboard switching: focus
loss occurs when pressing any bound shortcut, for example volume
up/down. So, it is in 'media-keys' unity-settings-daemon plugin, not in
'keyboard' plugin.

Also, 'media-keys' controls keyboard layouts only in unity-settings-
daemon, upstream gnome-settings-daemon doesn't have code for doing this.

  break;
  case BATTERY_KEY:
  do_battery_action (manager);
  break;
+ case SWITCH_INPUT_SOURCE_KEY:
+ case SWITCH_INPUT_SOURCE_BACKWARD_KEY:
+ do_switch_input_source_action (manager, type);
+ break;
/* Note, no default so compiler catches missing keys */
  case CUSTOM_KEY:
  g_assert_not_reached ();

Seems that Ubuntu (at least 14.04) does not use gnome-settings-daemon,
instead it uses unity-settings-daemon.

2014-04-23 Thread kolen
Feature may be useful (better integration with system), but the way to
activate apps have not so good UI. In addition to annoyingness, if I
close this popup, I cannot install integration for that website later.

> There is an option to tell the extension not to ask you again.
It will not ask for this one website, but will ask for others.

[Bug 1311608] [NEW] "Would you like to install ... for extra features" popup is annoying

2014-04-23 Thread kolen
Public bug reported:

"Would you like to install (website name) for extra features and quicker
access" popup annoys me. It reminds me of very annoying "Download our
app" popup on many websites, but this time it's on operating system
side. Especially annoying if I visit website from link/search and don't
use it often.

[Bug 1311090] [NEW] After removing xubuntu-default-settings package lightdm failed to start

2014-04-22 Thread kolen
Public bug reported:

When I removed xubuntu-default-settings package,
/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/10-xubuntu.conf file was not removed with it. It
caused lightdm to stop working, displaying black screen/no signal.
After removing 10-xubuntu.conf, lightdm started to work again, with standard
'ubuntu' login screen.

Seems that config file was left after package removal, but required
files referenced from that config removed. It caused lightdm to stop
working.

[Bug 1310988] [NEW] Visual garbage in gutter between screens (multiple monitors)

2014-04-22 Thread kolen
Public bug reported:

I see visible garbage in gutter area between screens (using multiple
monitors of different height).

It is not visible on screenshot (Screenshot from 2014-04-22
12:45:02.png), but actually visible on screen of second monitor
(Screenshot from 2014-04-22 12:45:02.png).

There is gutter area between screens, I don't know if it's feature or
bug, but second monitor shows part of first monitor's image. Width of
gutter is a few pixels. In upper area of gutter, where there's no
corresponding parts of first screen's image, there is visible garbage.

2014-04-21 Thread kolen
** Description changed:

Encountered that after screen is turned off by inactivity, then after

[Bug 1244090] Re: Pressing keyboard shortcut to switch keyboard layout causes temporary loss of focus

2014-04-18 Thread kolen
Still in 10.04 (gnome-settings-daemon 3.8.6.1-0ubuntu11), but slightly
less noticeable ("reply" pane in Twitter still closes when pressing
keyboard switch key, and sometimes I notice blink of border that
indicates focus of input field; defocused time has decreased).

Why invalid? I didn't use unofficial packages. Only one package "zeal" from
"zeal" repository, completely unrelated to KDE.
Maybe it asks for kdewallet not because of bogeda, but it still asks.

[Bug 1275749] [NEW] muon-updater asks for kdewallet password at startup

2014-02-03 Thread kolen
Public bug reported:

Muon-updater asks for kdewallet password each time I start it to update
packages (from system tray icon when new updates are found). Seems that
it does not require kdewallet for normal functioning. Asking first
kdewallet password and then account password is annoying.

There is discussion that 'bodega' can cause this:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=330610

Harald Sitter 2014-02-03 10:21:21 UTC
libmuon/backends/BodegaBackend/BodegaBackend.cpp: KWallet::Wallet *wallet =
KWallet::Wallet::openWallet(KWallet::Wallet::NetworkWallet(), 0,
KWallet::Wallet::Synchronous);

Bodega is a general purpose app store being developed by KDE [1], and
apparently it needs client authentication. Bodega is the reason why it
opens a wallet. It is somewhat experimental at this stage, so I am not
entirely sure that is intended or anything, I'll ask the responsible dev
to be sure. FWIW though, if you have the bodega client you are most
certainly not running an official Kubuntu muon package or have
unpackaged files floating about, because kubuntu doesn't pacakge muon
with bodega at this time. [1] http://lwn.net/Articles/525020/

Harald Sitter 2014-02-03 12:51:09 UTC
Nope. Ubuntu and Kubuntu share the same muon package and that package does not
have Bodega support, so you must have gotten the bodega backend from elsewhere
(i.e. not official).

Aleix Pol 2014-02-03 12:54:17 UTC
Bodega opens a wallet because we need to fetch listings of resources as well as
for ratings and reviews and these require authentication. FWIW, ubuntu also
requires authentication for ratings and reviews.

[Bug 1259090] [NEW] Pidgin does not reconnect after sleep/suspend (stays in "Connecting" state)

2013-12-09 Thread kolen
Public bug reported:

Pidgin always don't reconnect after returning from sleep mode. It displays
"Available - Connecting" in status selector, but it never ends.
Selecting first "Offline" status, pressing Enter (to finish status change),
then "Available" again makes it connect correctly (always).

Noticed this even in Adium (but not 100% sure that it occurs always in
Adium, in Pidgin it occurs always), so maybe the problem is in
libpurple.

attached to sides of screen representing edge between monitors.

[Bug 1245349] Re: After waking up from sleep mode, active window moves to first display

2013-11-21 Thread kolen
Initiated sleep mode by closing laptop lid. Windows moved to first
monitor was notably Chromium.

Also, now I'm using KDE and this does not occur, tried going into sleep
mode multiple times -- windows remain at the same positions at which
left before sleep. Seems that this only occurs in default gnome/compiz
/unity-based Ubuntu desktop.

[Bug 1252662] [NEW] Invisible lock screen in KDE

2013-11-19 Thread kolen
Public bug reported:

When I lock screen in KDE (or return from suspend), I can see all
windows and move mouse, but mouse button presses and keypresses don't
work. Seems that there is invisible fully transparent lock screen that
blocks all mouse and keyboard buttons but don't cloak screen and don't
allow to enter password and unlock.

Only way to exit this is to restart X server or whole system.

[Bug 1250774] [NEW] Sometimes dropdown appears on another monitor

2013-11-13 Thread kolen
Public bug reported:

Sometimes, when clicking box on a website, dropdown appears on
correct position but on another display.

In my case, the browser was on second monitor, dropdown menu appeared on
first. After some switching of windows/chromium tabs, it started to
appear on correct display. Also, before using browser, I was using "lock
screen" feature in KDE, maybe it is related.

[Bug 1245473] Re: Binding ctrl+shift, alt+shift, etc for switching keyboard layout makes shortcuts with ctrl+shift, etc not working in any program

2013-11-10 Thread kolen
Possibly caused by bug 1244090: when keys to change layout are pressed,
focus moves away from application to some system app, therefore app
cannot receive keypress events.

[Bug 1245798] Re: Keyboard indicator sometimes changes displayed language after huge delay after actual layout switch

2013-11-05 Thread kolen
> How do change the layout?

With ctrl+shift.

> Is the active layout changed before the UI (e.g if you type
somewhere)? How slow is the system when that happens?

Yes, it changes before indicator reflects changes. Not so slow, I can
type text without delays, but indicator reflects changes after visible
delay.

Sometimes actual switching occurs after delay too, but when under load,
and rarely.

[Bug 1244090] Re: Pressing keyboard shortcut to switch keyboard layout causes temporary loss of focus

2013-10-30 Thread kolen
Why importance is set to low? For me, it is extremelly annoying bug: I
cannot use major websites (twitter, vk.com) without frustration, both in
Firefox and Chromium. Sometimes cursor moves to the start or to the end
of text input field when I switch focus, some websites has behavior
attached to losing focus (saving data and finishing editing, closing
popups).

Also seems that it induces bug 1245473: applications cannot handle
shortcuts when they lose focus, and pressing ctrl+shift and so on causes
loss of focus immediately.

[Bug 1245798] [NEW] Keyboard indicator sometimes changes displayed language after huge delay after actual layout switch

2013-10-29 Thread kolen
Public bug reported:

Sometimes, especially under load, keyboard indicator changes its
appearance (two-character language code) after a huge delay after layout
is switched with hotkey. Sometimes about 10 seconds, and while load is
not hard enough to make system unusable.

Even under normal conditions it changes after about 0.5 seconds (which
is acceptable though).

[Bug 1245473] [NEW] Binding ctrl+shift, alt+shift, etc for switching keyboard layout makes shortcuts with ctrl+shift, etc not working in any program

2013-10-28 Thread kolen
Public bug reported:

Tried only with ctrl+shift, maybe behaves the same for other modifier
key combinations when used as shortcut for switching layouts.

- Set ctrl+shift as shortcut for switching keyboard layouts

[Bug 1245398] [NEW] Cannot enter non-latin password characters in lock screen if layout set to english before lock

2013-10-28 Thread kolen
Public bug reported:

- Configure 2 keyboard layouts:
  - default: english
  - secondary: something else
- Set your password to something containing non-english characters
- Switch keyboard layout to English
- Lock screen
- Now you can't change keyboard layout on lock screen (hotkey does not work
(#1244548) and there is no clickable layout indicator), so you can't enter
password and unlock.

For some reason, clickable layout indicator appears on lock screen only
if non-english layout (or non-default layout?) is active before locking
screen.

[Bug 1244548] [NEW] Keyboard shortcut for changing keyboard layout does not work on lock screen

2013-10-25 Thread kolen
Public bug reported:

Shortcut for changing keyboard layout does not work on lock screen (to
change keyboard layout for entering password).

- Switch to some non-english layout (otherwise lock screen will not have layout
indicator at all)
- Lock the screen

not change layout

[Bug 1244090] [NEW] Pressing keyboard shortcut to switch keyboard layout causes temporary loss of focus

2013-10-24 Thread kolen
Public bug reported:

When pressing keyboard shourtcut for switching keyboard layout, focus
temporary switches from active text input to something else, then
restores back when releasing keys used to switch. Maybe even active
window loses focus, but window frame does not shows this (window header
remains to look active).

For example: when I press ctrl+shift here, when writing this
description, yellow frame disappears from text input box, text caret
disappears too; they appear again when releasing ctrl+shift. The same
occurs in all other programs, i.e. terminal.

It causes serious annoyance, for example in Twitter when losing focus in
Reply text box, reply rolls up and I have to click it again with mouse
and set caret to correct place each time I switch keyboard layouts.

Other key combinations, not only ctrl+shift, also cause this.

[Bug 636311] Re: Keyboard special keys interfere with mouse

2010-10-11 Thread kolen
Have this problem. It is strange that left button does not work only if
keyboard layout indicator (scroll lock led) is enabled. After disabling
keyboard layout indicator left button works.
Also, xinput list shows duplicate mouse device under "Virtual core pointer".
After disabling second mouse device, one of duplicates, left button begins to
work, even if keyboard indicator is enabled.

"xinput test" shows mouse click events even if left mouse does not work
due to this problem.

Also works for me. Disabled scroll lock indicator and now left button works
after switching layouts. A4Tech K3-230.
Maybe turning on/off scroll lock indicator has some bad effect on virtual

[Bug 653679] [NEW] Install/Remove button status not updated on search

2010-10-02 Thread kolen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

How to reproduce

1. Search for some installed package.
2. Select this package in "search results" list. Left buttonn says "More info",
right button says "Remove". It is ok.
3. Enter name of some not installed package in search box.
4. List of packages updates, selection changes to first line and right button
still says "Remove", however package is not installed and it should say
"Install".

When selecting other package in list and back, it displays correct
status.

[Bug 653296] [NEW] Window switcher applet displays ellipsis without icons when buttons become narrow

2010-10-01 Thread kolen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

When more windows appear on desktop, size of window switcher applet
buttons became smaller. After some moment it begins to display ellipsis
symbols instead of icons, and it begins when there is enough space to
display icons.

I think it should display icons always, even cropped if buttons become
narrow.
