[Bug 1852872] [NEW] Application names in Latin characters instead of Cyrillic

2019-11-16 Thread kolya
Public bug reported:

I have ru_RU.UTF-8 and majority of elements are written in Russian and
Cyrillic. When I open mate menu some UI elements are in Russian with
Cyrillic - but somehow application names are in Russian that is
transliterated into latin. See screenshot - for example Cheese app.

I'm fairly certain that this was not a problem on 19.04 and appeared
after upgrade.

Please let me know if additional information is needed.
Thanks!

[Bug 1827759] [NEW] Doesn't work properly with umask 027

2019-05-04 Thread kolya
Public bug reported:

Usecase:

* Have a non-admin user with umask 027
* That non-admin user does 'sudo apt ...' that triggers rebuild of
/var/lib/command-not-found/commands.db

The result is that /var/lib/command-not-found/commands.db is no longer
readable by any non-root user because user's umask gets inherited and
used.

Expected: regardless of what umask non-root has command-not-found
database should be readable by everybody.

To add to the original report: it looks like problem also occurs after
suspend/resume cycle. I.e.

* I boot laptop
* Touchpad is not detected
* I issue command mentioned above
* Touchpad is working
* I suspend and resume laptop
* Touchpad is not working properly again.

[Bug 1827694] [NEW] Synaptics Touchpad doesn't support scroll after update to 19.04

2019-05-03 Thread kolya
Public bug reported:

I have Lenovo P50 laptop. After upgrading to 19.04 from 18.10 Synaptics
touchpad no longer supports scrolling after boot. It is also not
detected in 'mouse' settings.

After some research I found that running 'echo -n "reconnect" | sudo tee
/sys/bus/serio/devices/serio1/drvctl' seems to fix the problem.

Relevant info in dmesg:

```
$ dmesg | grep -E 'psmouse|i801'
[2.101685] i801_smbus :00:1f.4: enabling device ( -> 0003)
```

This is a regression from 18.10 (and all versions before that that I've
run on this laptop).

Please let me know if more information is needed. Thanks.

[Bug 1702801] Re: Apparmor complaints about sssd_pac_plugin.so in dmesg

2019-04-29 Thread kolya
This still occurs with with ubuntu 19.04.

This also may be a potential resource leak/security problem. It looks
like each authentication creates a new entry in processe's maps file
that looks like this:

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/krb5/plugins/authdata/sssd_pac_plugin.so

After running for some time slapd processes gets many of those:

cat /proc/877/maps | grep sssd_pac_plugin.so | wc -l
3381

I guess at some point it will run out of resources and crash.

[Bug 36812]

2018-06-08 Thread kolya
Dear xorg developers. This is an old bug. In fact this is a 13 years old bug.
And it has been at least 7 years since this bug had a patch to fix it.
Yes, existing patch breaks specification. But one would seem that the fact that
patch existed for 7 years and was applied by default by popular distributions
without users` complains would suggest that existing patch is a practical
solution to the problem despite breaking theoretical (and as discussed here -
not well thought through) specification.
There is now once more spike of activity here - probably because Ubuntu 17.04
was released recently which dropped this patch because it was not compatible
with newer xorg. kyak has provided an updated patch, but it would take a lot of
time for distributions to pick it up and then circle would repeat with next
xorg version.

Yes, there has been a few heated discussions around this patch and XKB
specification. And yes, specifications are important, but this is really
annoying problem for people with more than one keyboard layout. Annoying
to the point of making xorg really unusable for some groups of people.
So is there any chance to get more practical with this bug?

For example, kyak's patch has a function 'xkbSwitchGroupOnRelease' that
is a stub to make new behaviour controllable by configuration. Would
xorg maintainers find this patch acceptable to upstream if that function
read value from some environment variable and only turned new behaviour
on if it was set?

I feel like it would allow XKB spec to stay and also would allow users
affected by this problem to solve it without recompiling xorg - which
average user would struggle to do.

Looking forward to your reply.
Thanks!

[Bug 1746418] Re: System freezes when starting Xorg after installing linux-image-4.13.0-32-generic

2018-03-30 Thread kolya
Looks like I've got this one too on Lenovo P50 with E3-1505M. I've
created #1759997 since I was not able to trace it immediately to this
bug.

The problem is that I had a fully working system until 3.20180312.0
microcode update arrived - which made my system essentially unbootable.
This was an unpleasant surprise and may be a wide spread problem since
this microcode is now 'main stream'.

This is probably a duplicate of #1746418. Confusing part here was that

[Bug 1719134] Re: Shouldn't create /usr/local/bin/firefox and thunderbird

2017-10-28 Thread kolya
I would like to expand on one of the comment mentioned by this bug's
author:

"there's no "exec" and bash isn't clever enough to optimize it, leaving
an extra "bash /usr/local/bin/firefox" running for the entire firefox
session."

Not only it leaves extra bash running it also breaks any scripts that
start and kill firefox - because now they issue signal to bash, bash
dies, firefox continues to run.

[Bug 1683383] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts (reopen)

2017-05-17 Thread kolya
That patch that fixes the problem has been applied in Ubuntu for way
more than 'couple of years'

Unfortunately using right keys for modifiers doesn't work well with
people who use 10 finger typing - they are used to press certain keys
with certain fingers - to speed up their typing, and using wrong hand
slows things down and leads to errors. Some modifier-heavy apps - like
Emacs become very inconvenient if used with wrong modifier keys.

[Bug 1553885] [NEW] VPN split DNS gets broken after suspend/resume

2016-03-06 Thread kolya
Public bug reported:

I've got a company's VPN server I connect to. When I connect to it I get
several DNS entries for split DNS configuration and this works fine.

After suspend/resume cycle I reconnect to VPN and see those split DNS
entries added along with entries for VPN's DNS servers that do not have
domain attached to it (i.e. not split). Disconnecting and reconnecting
to VPN doesn't solve the problem: those non split entries gets stuck
until I restart NetworkManager.

I'll attach the patch that addresses the problem.

[Bug 1305699] Re: upowerd crashed with SIGSEGV in service_client_free()

2014-12-12 Thread kolya
Bug described here has likely nothing to do with libimobiledevice-utils.
Patch attached to this bug fixes clearly reproducinble memory handling
issue in upowerd. This patch has been accepted by upstream. I think it
would be nice if Ubuntu could apply it to LTS packages.

Thanks!

[Bug 1305699] Re: upowerd crashed with SIGSEGV in service_client_free()

2014-12-12 Thread kolya
I'm not sure I would agree that this is idevice library bug.

Yes, it's API might not be perfect, but given that API upowerd was doing
clearly wrong thing. Yes, API maybe could be improved. But this is not
the reason for upowerd to ignore current state of API contract and do
wrong thing.

Jyst my 2 cents.

2014-11-11 Thread kolya
This is a source code patch, you would need to rebuild the package after
you apply it so a source.

patch -p1  0001-upowerd-Fix-cleanup-in-up_device_idevice_coldplug-
fi.patch

 - this is how you can apply it to the source.

[Bug 1379142] [NEW] Edge flipping not squar edesktop

2014-10-08 Thread kolya
Public bug reported:

I have dual screen setup and those screens have different sizes. For
sake of simplicity lets say that screen1 is taller than screen2 and top
edges of screens are aligned. Now, if I move window to botton edge of
screen to desktop doesn't flip.

I.e. it looks like that compiz only looks at 'global' edge of whole
desktop eventhough parts of that edge may not be accessible because
actual screen displaying it may be too small.

Expected result: desktop should flip even if I move window to the edge
of smallest screen.

[Bug 1327659] Re: Compiz freezes when screen is disconnected

2014-06-09 Thread kolya
I did some 'gdbing' and located cause of the issue.

The problem (only?) happens when texture compression is enabled.

So, if texture compression is enabled GLFramebufferObject::allocate
allocates texture that is compressed and apparently mesa doesn't like
compressed textures for frame buffer.

Oddly enough enabled compression doesn't cause the problem when texture
is allocated first time at startup, but only causes problem when it is
reallocated when resolution changes. Probably because custom config is
loaded at a later stage somehow - but this is not exactly apparent why
config is loaded at a later stage. Judging by the log output config
should be loaded by the time opengl plugin is loaded.

I guess ideally enabling texture compression should not cause such
issues.

Please let me know if I can provide any other information.

Thanks!

[Bug 1327659] [NEW] Compiz freezes when screen is disconnected

2014-06-07 Thread kolya
Public bug reported:

I have an laptop with Intel HD4000 graphics running compiz (with mint
mate).

When I disconnect external screen the main laptop screen blinks and
starts displaying old stuff on left half and old stuff from disconnected
screen on right half. And it freezes in this state although mouse is
still moving - but I cannot click anything.

Do dmesg messages, but xsession-errors contains this:

This happens with both Trusty stock x server and oibaf xserver, but this
doesn't happen if I disable compiz. Also, problem exists when I connect
screen, i.e. any change in screen config triggers this issue.

Please let me know if I can provide any useful information to help
fixing this issue.

Thanks!

[Bug 1291195] [NEW] digiKam is leaking memory when updating thumbnails

2014-03-11 Thread kolya
Public bug reported:

When updating thumbnails on large number of photos digiKam quickly uses
all memory and dies.

Similar problem have been reported for Fedora:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1023241

They've tracked the problem to memory leak in libpgf6. The leak has been
patched but probably not released as a separate release. Fedora release
a package based on svn revision.

It looks like similar issue had been discussed in kde mailing lists:
http://mail.kde.org/pipermail/digikam-devel/2013-November/070004.html.
The solution there is to use newer libpgf6, or use libpgf from digiKam
source.

[Bug 1184831] Re: mate settings daemon is not supported by debian/powerbtn.sh

2013-08-16 Thread kolya
Hi.

Thank you for having look into this problem and accepting my patch!

Unfortunately patch that you have accepted won't solve issue with
'sleep' button and turning off screen when lid is closed. There's
another branch attached to this ticket that solves it but I do not know
if that change would negatively affect other DEs. I.e. do other DEs
manage screen backlight by themselves or should lid.sh just turn screen
off no matter which DE is used?

Thanks!

[Bug 799104] Re: Wobbly Windows maximise effect triggers on focus

2012-06-07 Thread kolya
Hi. Sorry for the delay.

Here is how I'm able to reproduce this problem:

1) Boot up Ubuntu 12.04 live cd
2) Install CCSM (you'll probably need to update apt sources)
3) Run CCSM disable ubuntu unity plugin and enable wobbly windows. You might
need to enable other plugins to make system usable.
4) Restart compiz with 'compiz --replace ccsm'

After this once you switch to maximised window it wobbles.

My wild guess would be that unity plugin handles header of maximized
windows in some custom way and this problem is not visible when it is
enabled. I do understand that this means that unity users are not
affected, but users of other desktop environments are e.g. xfce and,
dare I say, mate.

I would really appreciate if you could look into this.
Thank you in advance and please let me know if I can be of any more help.

[Bug 929334] Re: nginx deny all doesn't support ipv6

2012-06-06 Thread kolya
This is not true. Stock nginx in Lucid does support ipv6 and is configured to
support it by default - please see config above.
Also since 'deny all' doesn't work with ipv6 '/doc' is opened to everybody on
ipv6 in the config above which is not exactly what was intended.

I'm not saying that nginx version should be updated since problem can be
easily worked around. All I'm saying is that default config should be
fixed to properly work with ipv6 - this is security problem in LTS
version after all. Also it would be nice to have clear comment in
default config that ipv6 doesn't work with 'deny all'.

Thanks.

[Bug 929334] Re: nginx deny all doesn't support ipv6

2012-06-06 Thread kolya
The problem is that module in question is used by default config (see
'deny all' in '/doc' in config above). This is not a huge security
problem by itself (after all only static doc becomes available on
machine with ipv6 connectivity. The more serious issue is that users
might use that '/doc' definition as an example for their own
configurations and get serious security holes (especially considering
similarity with apache config in this case). And I think it is pretty
reasonable for the user to assume that stock config performs in
reasonable and expected way.

The problem might become more frequent as users move to ipv6 support on
existing installations - this might be not that infrequent with all this
'ipv6 day' buzz.

The fix would be to use 'return 403;' instead of 'deny all' in default
nginx config in '/doc' section.

Unfortunately I'm not familiar with debdiff tool and I'll have to spend
some time learning it. I'll try to do this, but this won't be very fast.

In any case I would appreciate if you could incorporate trivial fix I
mentioned above along with some explanation why this is being done into
changes for #956150.

Thanks for your attention to this problem.

[Bug 799104] Re: Wobbly Windows maximise effect triggers on focus

2012-06-04 Thread kolya
I'll try to reproduce the problem on livecd (had to revert to older
ubuntu version because of this and other bugs).

In the meantime, it looks like comment #98 in 862430 refers to similar
(same?) problem.

[Bug 988183] Re: Logs full with ICMPv6 RA: ndisc_router_discovery() failed to add default route

2012-05-15 Thread kolya
Just to note: this problem also affects older versions. I have 11.04 and
updated kernel from ubuntu kernel PPA to have better wireless support
and btrfs fixes. So with 3.3 and 3.4 kernels I had wifi connection
dropped very often. Apparently setting IPV6 to 'ignore' in NM settings
for this connection fixes drop outs and IPV6 still works weirdly enough.

I can confirm that that is indeed happening in 12.04. This didn't used

thing look rather ugly.

Please let me know if I can provide any more information on this.

[Bug 929334] Re: nginx deny all doesn't support ipv6

2012-02-24 Thread kolya
apt-cache policy nginx:
nginx:
  Installed: 0.7.65-1ubuntu2.2
  Candidate: 0.7.65-1ubuntu2.2

lsb_release -a:
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS
Release:10.04
Codename:   lucid

I do not think that my current nginx configuration is particularly
relevant for this ticket since I've changed it to avoid the problem.

This is part of default /etc/nginx/site-available/default:

server {
listen   [::]:80 default;
server_name  localhost;

access_log  /var/log/nginx/localhost.access.log;

location / {
root   /var/www/nginx-default;
index  index.html index.htm;
}

location /doc {
root   /usr/share;
autoindex on;
allow 127.0.0.1;
deny all;
}

location /images {
root   /usr/share;
autoindex on;
}
}

That 'deny all' doesn't work with ipv6 according to
http://wiki.nginx.org/HttpAccessModule (ipv6 support appeared at version
0.8.22).

[Bug 604122] Re: mmc0: Got command interrupt 0x00030000 even though no command operation was in progress.

2011-09-16 Thread kolya
I have Dell Inspiron 6400 with Natty with all updates.
lspci:
03:01.1 SD Host controller: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C822 SD/SDIO/MMC/MS/MSPro Host
Adapter (rev 19)
03:01.2 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C592 Memory Stick Bus Host Adapter
(rev 0a)
03:01.3 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd xD-Picture Card Controller (rev 05)

SD slot used to work fine till yesterday - I was able to read and write SD
cards I have.
Yesterday I copied some data into card, removed card, inserted in into another
device, then brought it back and got error mentioned in the bugreport. Since
then all cards I try produce this error. I tried to reboot, format card, etc -
no result.
The important part is that it used to work, I removed card from slot, inserted
it back (without rebooting/sleeping) and now it doesn't work at all.

Just tried Oneiric beta1 - same problem there.

On the other hand I just booted into Natty with card in slot and had

[Bug 778852] Re: Sound is distorted sometimes

2011-06-15 Thread kolya
The distinctive 'feature' of my problem was that distortion appeared one
some other application tried to play sound (e.g. skype when somebody

'permanent', i.e. be heard even when skype finished playing its sound.
And as I've posted in comment #4 it looks like it was configuration
issue and now sound is ok.

[Bug 796381] Re: Too many language variants

2011-06-14 Thread kolya
Hi, even for 'non-single-user' installation, for desktops I think it
reasonable to assume that all users speak more or less same language and
it would be very rare if this includes several different English
variants. :)

Actually, if I could make a suggestion here it seems to me that now all
dictionaries installed somewhere in /usr/share/(myspell|humspell) and
there is a lot of simlinking involved. So, it might make sense to allow
users to make something like ~/.myspell, ~/.mhunspell which links to
dictionaries. With help of command line, maybe some scripts or simple UI
around this one could select set of languages he uses. And the only
change needed for this - to make spell checking libraries look for
dictionaries in somewhere home dir, and if that dir doesn't exist - in
system location.

[Bug 796371] Re: Pidgin spell check languages names are not human readable

2011-06-13 Thread kolya
Sorry, I'll try to describe this in more detail.

1) Steps to reproduce:
  * start Pidgin
  * open chat window
  * right-click in the text box where you normally type message (to open
context menu) and point mouse 'Languages' option.

2) Behavior expected: languages submenu should contain human readable
names, like 'English', 'Russian'. Other applications (e.g. Firefox,
LibreOffice) do this.

3) In the submenu which appears there is a list of languages installed
in the system, which literally says: en_AU, en_CA, en_GB, en_US, en_ZA,
ru_RU. See attachment for menu screenshot.

Also, please note that I have Russian language selected for my account - just
in case this affects something.
I think that this problem appeared after Natty updated (I do not remember
having this issue before).

Please let me know if I could provide more information.

[Bug 796722] [NEW] Drop down menu has a lot of empty space

2011-06-13 Thread kolya
Public bug reported:

Hi.

  The problem I describe bellow probably exists in other drop down menus, but I
was quickly able to locate it in Save dialogs of LibreOffice and GIMP.
   Please see screenshot attached. As you might be able to see - if file types
menu has a lot of options then there is big empty space displayed when menu is
first shown. One can scroll to fill in that empty space, but in case of GIMP it
takes whole screen and looks ugly.

  The expected behavior would be to display menu without any empty
areas.

  I'd be happy to provide any additional information if required.

[Bug 796376] [NEW] spell check language duplicates in Firefox

2011-06-12 Thread kolya
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

When right-clicking in a text-area and looking under Languages in the

seems a bit to much.

It appears to me that duplicates in FF may come from a fact there there
are duplicates here. All those symlinks come from myspell-* packages.

[Bug 796381] [NEW] Too many language variants

2011-06-12 Thread kolya
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dictionaries-common

In almost every application which can check spelling (FF, Pidgin, gedit) I get
several variants of English language - US, UK, AU, CA - 5 in total.
It seems logical to me that 99% of Ubuntu installations have English language
(and dictionaries) installed, and 99% of users never use more then 1 English
variant (and many people do not really know what the difference is). So there
are 5 options in spell check menu which just confuse users and are never used.
This seems to be not user friendly at all.
Currently it even seems impossible to manually remove packages with language
variants one doesn't use since language-support-en and
language-support-writing-en depend on them.

It would be expected that user could select language variants he wants to use
and then only these variants get displayed all over the system.
I'll really appreciate if this could be solved and Ubuntu UI could be made more
friendly to people.
I'll be happy to provide any additional information.
Thanks!

[Bug 772834] Re: Asus U43F with 11.04 freeze on suspend

2011-06-04 Thread kolya
I've got similar issue on my Dell Inspiron 6400. And I've tracked it down to
intel wifi driver. I have iwl 5300 card installed - and as I can see at least
some people here have intel wifi too.
My system hangs during suspend, but if I do 'sudo rmmod iwlagn' it
suspends/resumes fine. But I also have latest compat-wireless installed from
source. You might also want to try 'sudo rmmod iwlagn iwlcore'
Anyway, I'm not sure how this all related, but I think it might worth a try to
isolate issue.

[Bug 778852] Re: Sound is distorted sometimes

2011-06-04 Thread kolya
Looks like that in my case the cause of the issue was an attempt to make
pulseaudio control PCM volume instead if it's weird way to control both master
and PCM volume.
I had 'load-module module-alsa-sink control=PCM' in default.pa for this and
removing it seems to solve the problem (although now I have weird behaving
volume controls again).

Looks like the cause of the problem was my attempt to make pulseaudio
contol PCM volume. I had 'load-module module-alsa-sink control=PCM' in
my default.pm. Removing it reduced CPU usage to 2%.

Is there any other information I could provide in order to help to resole the
problem?
It is very difficult to listen to the music when it distorts when somebody from
my skype contact list enters or exists network.
Looks like quite major problem to me, and definitely introduced by Natty.

[Bug 778852] [NEW] Sound is distorted sometimes

2011-05-06 Thread kolya
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

  When I'm listening to rythmbox sometimes sound becomes distorted.
Sometimes it is distorted when I unpause playback, but if I pause and
unpause once more it becomes fine again.

  I found pretty good way to reproduce though:
1) Have rythmbox playing.
2) Open video file in totem
3) Close totem
4) repeat 2-3

  Always, when totem opens/closes I hear a small dropout in music. But
sometimes along with dropout distortion begins. And distortion finishes when I
open/close totem again. I.e. I open totem - just dropout, I close totem -
distortion begins, I open totem again - distortion disappears.
  Distortion doesn't appear 100% of the time, but pretty often. Dropout can be
heard always.

  This problem appeared after upgrade to Natty. Before this update I
never heard any distortion on this laptop.

Here is an alsa debug output when I start totem and distortion begins:
