[Bug 917394] [NEW] xserver restarts when I start emacs

2012-01-16 Thread krahim
Public bug reported:

When I type emacs, emacs -fn fixed, or emacs -fn Monospace-12, the
xserver restarts and I am logged out. This happened with the original
emacs23 installation, and it also happens with the current
ppa:cassou/emacs version (24).

The following is from my xorg log file:

[Bug 917394] Re: xserver restarts when I start emacs

2012-01-16 Thread krahim
I have the same problem with xemacs, and I believe this is an xorg
issue. I reported it as ubuntu-but emacs as it was that was the command
I Initially typed that demonstrated the issue.

[Bug 917394] Re: xserver restarts when I start emacs

2012-01-16 Thread krahim
Note, I'm getting

Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting

This is similar to bug #650539

I can run skype, and to my knowledge emacs (23 and 24) and xemacs are
the only apps I currently have problems with.

I cannot be sure when this started happening, but I do strongly suspect
that emacs and calibre were working at some point after my upgrade to
11.10 which occurred in mid December.

[Bug 917394] Re: xserver restarts when I start emacs

2012-01-16 Thread krahim
The calibre problem makes it similar to bug #754886, but VLC works fine
and I am not sure it is a duplicate of Bug #805303.

My system is completely up to date and I have reinstalled emacs23 which still
crashes
karim@ulappy01:~$ sudo apt-cache policy emacs
emacs:
  Installed: 23.3+1-1ubuntu4
  Candidate: 23.3+1-1ubuntu4
  Version table:
 *** 23.3+1-1ubuntu4 0
500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I would appreciate any workaround suggestions. I installed the latest
appmenu-qt, which did not help.

Cheers!

[Bug 917394] Re: xserver restarts when I start emacs

2012-01-16 Thread krahim
Not so simple now.

I cleaned out the cache and config files using ubuntu tweak. I then
reinstalled emacs23 and well both emacs23 and calibre now crashes
*intermittently* as oppose to immediately. So far after either crashes
once--restarts X, after I log in either will cause a X restart. If I do
a reboot, not simply log back it, I seem to have the two working, with
my fingers crossed

I have similar behaviour with emacs, emacs -Q, emacs -fn fixed, and
emacs Monospace-12

I also sometimes use two monitors with nvidia. the two programs seem to
both work and at times crash with one or two monitors attached.

Apparently it is possible to run xboard with a font argument but I haven't
bothered to sort this out yet.

So, for me wireless with wicd disconnects and reconnects fairly
regularly now. I wonder if something is timing out somewhere.

I use the broadcom B43 wireless driver fwcutter version. When I tried to
use the Broadcom STA my wireless simply would not operate.

Re: [Bug 478727] Re: karmic boot hangs after upgrade likely nvidia but unsure Bug #428920 ubuntu-bug xorg

2010-04-21 Thread krahim
Hi,

I had the problem before I used the custom kernel, and it went away
after I switched to the custom kernel. This is likely because the
custom kernel disabled app armour and at the time I didn't know what
the problem is but I knew how to build a custom kernel.
I believe I clearly stated this on more than one occasion.

I also had this problem with another machine and it was resolved by
disabling app armour. There is, or was an app armour, problem that has
nothing to do with the custom kernel. The custom kernel appeared to
resolve the problem because it disabled app armour.

I am a little annoyed with this.

Best wishes,

Karim

[Bug 478727] Re: karmic boot hangs after upgrade likely nvidia but unsure Bug #428920 ubuntu-bug xorg

2010-04-21 Thread krahim
Fair enough,

To be clear I have not had the problem with the custom kernel, so I'm
surprised that one can suggest the custom kernel was a problem.

Regardless, I'll check if I can reproduce it with the newest Ubuntu
karmic kernel with app armour enabled. I have been disabling app armour
with all kernels. It the bug hasn't gone away with newer official Ubuntu
kernels, I will launch a new bug, perhaps initramfs-tools is the
incorrect location.

Best, and thanks for your effort.

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2010-01-21 Thread krahim
Wow,

I googled ubuntu bugs and found this. I have to say I'm not impressed
with the thinking (or lack their of) that went in to reporting this bug.
Linux is an effective open source operating system, it is not intended
to be Nike, Apple, or Microsoft.

I also have concerns about the number of releases. Karmic was quite
buggy and I heard many people reinstalling the system. Perhaps 2 a year
is too many.

I use my computer for scientific computing and managed to make it work
with an upgrade without a reinstall. I had to disable ufw at grub.
Currently I use Karmic and I have used ubuntu since before Dapper. Prior
to that I used Gentoo, Slackware, and Debian.

I have to say it is excellent work that is done in general making Linux
available many people, but I caution that thinking about market share
has not helped Microsoft or Apple in building an effective usable
quality Operating System--it has helped them gain market share.

Best Wishes,

Karim

[Bug 479674] Re: evince 2.28.1 fails to render binary eps files on amd64

2010-01-20 Thread krahim
Hi,

I had the identical problem, and well I have an odd work around that I can
repeat.
I install evince on my 32bit chroot and now evince works everywhere. I install
it with the command
sudo aptitude install invance and it installs the following packages

The following NEW packages will be installed:
  devicekit-disks{a} evince ghostscript{a} gnome-icon-theme{a}

  libwmf0.2-7{a} obex-data-server{a} policykit-1{a} policykit-1-gnome{a}
  psfontmgr{a} python-dbus{a} python-gobject{a}

During the setup I can watch my 64 bit version of evince actually show the
image correctly. If I remove this evince it doesn't work.

To reproduce it. First have evince not working on a valid eps file in 64
bit. Setup a 32 bit chroot and install evince and see what happens.

Let me know if you want any other info.

2009-11-09 Thread krahim
Thanks Robbie,

I didn't quite follow your email but I more or less did a similar thing
before reading your respones.

I was looking for run level 3 and it appears the world has changed a
little, so i managed to modify grub details.

The boot dies at app armour, at times it has taken me over half an hour
to boot, rebooting safe back until it finally works.

I read there are updates to the kernel that are suppose to fix this. So, I
complied the latest
kernel 2.6.31.5 from kernel.org.

And well it now complains about not loading app armour profiles during
the boot but it always boots and seems to work. Perhaps I could have
just removed app armour. There is also a comlaint about ufw at boot but
shorewall appears configured correctly as it was before the upgrade.

This is the first time I complied a kernel in years. I have used
slackware then gentoo for a while before I got turned onto dapper and
then I forgotten about things like this. This time it took hours to
compile to compile the kernel.

Thanks!
Karim

[Bug 292606] Re: dkms - error when installing custom kernel

2009-11-09 Thread krahim
Hi

So I have this problem now. As a result of an upgrade I had serious boot
issues, I almost considered reinstalling an os. Anyways I installed a
custom kernel and the latest Nvidia drivers. Apparently this is bad
form? It's linux is it not so I can use kernel.org kernels can I not?

So I have this problem and apt-get and aptitude want to configure my kernel
linux-image-2.6.31.5-amd64-custom but it appears ot work fine...

I get:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
...

Examining /etc/kernel/postinst.d.
run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/dkms
run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/nvidia-common
run-parts: /etc/kernel/postinst.d/nvidia-common exited with return code 20

dpkg: error processing linux-image-2.6.31.5-2.6.32.5.custom (--configure):

I wondering how to get apt-get and aptitude to ignore this non-error and
work almost normally. I had another problem with my 32 bit chroot after
the upgrade and I managed to get past it.

Thanks,

Karim

So I can change the status of the package in the file /var/lib/dpkg/status
I changed the status from ``install ok half-configured''
to ``install ok installed''.

That at least prevents aptitude and apt-get from breaking my nvidia

hangs and I can do nothing. After pressing the off button and rebooting
in safemode It hangs at either

app-armour
or on stopping ntp

after hitting the power button again one or two time I manage a
successful boot. I use my computer so I need it to work. I spent 30 min
getting it to boot.

I can provide extra information if I'm told how to get it. I'm now
interested in bringing back a verbose boot so I can see where it is
hanging and perhaps stopping this boot to X. Note this is intermittent.
So it will boot fine several times then this odd thing happens. This is
why a verbose boot is required.

Also it appears the boot process has gotten much much longer with
Karmic. I recall with an earlier upgrade having a problem of a long wait
for network time out, that my have been Edgy or some such.

Thanks,
Karim

There is no bios update for the hp dv2201ca, and suspend does not
work. It causes the hard drive to click in some kind of stuck loop.
Suspend worked fine in Ubuntu since Edgy, but it stopped working in

[Bug 333153] Re: g77 package is missing

2009-05-11 Thread krahim
Hi,

I can use install g77 in intrepid using hardy packages. See my post:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7259478#post7259478

I would like to ask that g77 be supported. It is not realistic for
people modify all the legacy scientific code to have it work with
gfortran. I also suspect people will continue to use g77 even if
gfortran replaced it completely.

I strongly urge the ubuntu community to include and support legacy g77,
at the very least as packages in the long term releases. There is likely
a lot of legacy scientific code out there that uses g77.

Thanks,

Karim

However that was from a 2.6.24 kernel. Intrepid, currently contains a
much newer 2.6.27 kernel. So I'd be curious to see what the dmesg
output is after you attempt to burn a DVD using the 2.6.27 kernel.
Additionally, it would be great if you could post the exact commands you
use to burn the DVD. You may be right that this is an issue with dvd
+rw-tools for you. But I'd like to at least eliminate it possibly being
a kernel issue. If you do feel it is an issue with dvd+rw-tools, it
would be helpful to the dvd+rw-tools developers if you at least test the
lastest version of dvd+rw-tools available in Intrepid. You also
mentioned earlier that when you rolled back to an older version of dvd
+rw-tools available you were able to burn DVD's? It would be good to
specifically note the exact version of the package that worked and the
 current version that doesn't.

I unfortunately think that even though everyone may be experiencing the
same symptom here, the root cause may be different bugs. Regardless, it
would be great if those still experiencing issues with the most recent
Intrepid release could provide appropriate debug logs and information.
That includes package version information, steps to reproduce, debug
output, dmesg output, etc. We can then at least focus on opening
separate bug reports if necessary etc. Thanks.

I guess Intrepid the new one (still beta)?

[Bug 256186] Re: kernel 2.6.24-20 cannot find nvidia graphics card

2008-08-24 Thread krahim
Daniel,

I have not had recompile the nvidia proprietary drivers when I did
kernel upgrades using apt-get update/upgrade in the past.

I installed module-assistant and tried what you said from the 2.6.24-21
kernel. The source compile failed.

I currently have the 2.6.24-19, 2.6.24.20, and 2.6.24-21 kernels and
only the 19 works (locates the nvidia video card)

[Bug 256186] [NEW] kernel 2.6.24-20 cannot find nvidia graphics card

2008-08-08 Thread krahim
Public bug reported:

After upgrading sudo apt-get upgrade and rebooting my nvidia graphics card is
not found.
When I select the previous kernel everything works fine.

From the working kernel
uname -a
Linux ubuntult01 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Fri Jul 11 21:01:46 UTC 2008 x86_64
GNU/Linux

OS. Linux-x86_64
Nvidia driver version 173.14.12

GeForce Go 6150 with 256 MB an HP dv 2 laptop.

Note this happened with Edgy and was *never* resolved for the newer
kernels in Edgy.

Thanks,
Karim

2008-07-15 Thread krahim
Hey I tried rollbacks earlier, (bug #199040),but they didn't consistently work.
After a few reboots it stopped working. When it worked, a dvd would
mount as /dev/cdrom instead of /dev/cdrom.

Also the roll backs did not work on my 64bit laptop.

[Bug 200337] Re: CD/DVD burning problem in hardy

2008-05-31 Thread krahim
Please see the comments I posted to Bug #199040.

I have not been able to burn dvd's since the upgrade to hardy. I have
two ubuntu machines both of which burned dvd's before the upgrade
without any troubles.

With the 32 bit machine I can format, but even this fails with the 64.

Note that after mucking with the system, the dvd mounted as /dev/cdrom
instead of /dev/cdrom1 and then I was able to burn dvd rws. I noted what
I think I did (basically I tried rollbacks) under bug #199040, but
currently it mounts as cdrom1 and fails.

I wonder if burning dvd's is low priority?

This is not a nautilus problem. It is a hardy problem, I did not want to create

Once again my desktop does not burn.

[Bug 199040] Re: (hardy) can't write DVD-RW

2008-05-16 Thread krahim
Perhaps this is the same as the bug numbered 200337.
For the dvd burning problem is with dvd+rw-tools.

I had different but similar problems in 64 and 32 bit hardy. I am sure
this problem did not exist with edgy (32 and 64bit). I'm pretty sure 32
bit feisty was fine.

[Bug 199040] Re: (hardy) can't write DVD-RW

2008-05-11 Thread krahim
I upgraded to hardy recently.

I have burned rewritable dvd-rw's for my dvd/avi player successfully
with growisofs -Z /dev/cdrom -J -R temp.avi

I had troubles yesterday. I rollbacked growisofs to feisty and then to
edgy which uses a different underlying command. The new one is a front
end for genisoimage, the one for edgy was a front end for mkisofs. The
roll back did not help. I thought about rolling back mkisofs but this
would require me to roll back ubuntu-desktop, so I didn't.

Today after getting rid of the roll backs, everything worked. I did not
keep the print outs from when it failed but going up through my command
history I notice that I was using the command:

growisofs -Z /dev/cdrom1 -J -R temp.avi

Some how did dvd was mounted as cdrom1 instead of cdrom. I generally use tab
completion for this and thought it was an oddity of hardy that the dvd mounts
differently. Yesterday I also tried to burn with gnome bake and k3b without
success after failing the command line method. Today I only tried the command
line method with success.

I hope my two cents helps.

Karim

[Bug 139263] Re: g77 seg fault in feisty

2007-09-13 Thread krahim
used pinning to down grade.
first i tried to upgrade g77 to gusty, where my simple program compiled.
the problem i had was with R and octave. I compiled the latest R from source
and still had problems with gusty.

I downgraded g77, gfortran, octave, R, lapack3-dev, atlas-sse-dev and
their dep.

For atlas users, this system is not sse2.

I attached my preference file, may be over kill but it works now.

I.e. it works in 2.6.17-11-generic It is amd 64.
I have a hp dv2000 laptop.

The error says kernel module mismatch. I attached the log file.

g77 -Wall -O2 -funroll-loops -fPIC -c dpssdjt1.f dpssf7djt.f efnnrdjt.f
tdmevdjt.f upef8rdjt.f tinvit.f tridib.f epslon.f pythag.f
g77: Internal error: Segmentation fault (program f771)

make: *** [dpssdjt1.o] Error 1

I using the following:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/ft1/dpss$ g77 --version
GNU Fortran (GCC) 3.4.6 (Ubuntu 3.4.6-5ubuntu1)
Copyright (C) 2006 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

GNU Fortran comes with NO WARRANTY, to the extent permitted by law.
You may redistribute copies of GNU Fortran
under the terms of the GNU General Public License.
For more information about these matters, see the file named COPYING
or type the command `info -f g77 Copying'.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/ft1/dpss$ uname -a
Linux ubuntu01 2.6.20-16-386 #2 Fri Aug 31 00:51:58 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

This compiles on Edgy. Most importantly I need to downgrade g77 to the one used
in edgy immediately.
I added edgy sources in my sources.list and when I force g77 to the edgy
version many things break, and most of the software that I use is now removed...
