This morning I plugged an external monitor and I get the behaviour described in the bug #537640. One of the solution proposed for that bug is to execute the following command in order to disable KMS: echo options radeon modeset=0 /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf It worked for me and it seems that it solved also the problem mentioned in this bug... The drawback of this solution is that the correct solution at login is no longer detected.
