2010-05-15 Thread ldm
from: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14052

I have a Samsung Q45 and I'm an Ubuntu user since Feisty Fawn.
I have read a lot about 'Fn keys' on Samsung laptops in bugzilla and also in
bugs.launchpad.net.
This bug has been marked as fixed, but it is still present! (also in Lucid Lynx
with kernel 2.6.32-22)

Anyway yesterday I have tried this solution
http://www.voria.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3t=296 and it works fine:
package 'samsung-backlight' enables brightness up/down
package 'samsung-tools' enables wireless on/off

It seems to be a DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support),
it is possible to include this code directly in linux kernel source tree?

[Bug 569527] Re: 10.04 RC,install fails message in live-cd mode

2010-04-28 Thread ldm
It may be intentional, but it is clear that a number of people do not
recognize what you are attempting. It might be better to have a text
message associated with the pictures. In addition, not hitting a key
takes you to a can't install error message which does not seem
appropriate.

[Bug 569527] Re: 10.04 RC,install fails message in live-cd mode

2010-04-26 Thread ldm
After trying the action above and realizing I could not connect because
my wireless was not configured. I tried rebooting and because nothing
else appeared to work I hit the enter key when the icon screen first
came up. This allowed me to select a from the normal setup menus the
try without installing option. I am not sure if it is a bug in the
startup or if it was intentional, but there is no indication that you
must hit a key to access the menu. If a key is not clicked at the
moment the icons come up the program will give you an install error
after apparently trying to install. I think you may want to modify this
interface to bring up the menu automatically so that it performs the way
the previous version of Ubuntu did. Note: A search on the net found
other people who had the same problem and accidentally found that the
solution was clicking a key at the correct moment.

Thanks for your help.

[Bug 363271] Re: can't fsck / from friendly-recovery

2009-10-14 Thread ldm
When recovering from a lockup or when system crashes, if you select the
recovery option and then select fsck the screen blanks for a second and
then returns to the original recovery screen. This also happens any
time you select the this combination. Thus, there is no current way
other than the live cd to do a fsck on the disk. I am running with ext4
and a encrypted home partition and amd64 beta version of karmic.

[Bug 282242] Re: On startup applications on right display are shift left

+ Intrepid Beta, uname -r = 2.6.27-7-generic. Clean install, Ubuntu
+ 9.04 (Jaunty) Beta live CD

On startup, when a application is opened on my right screen in a dual
monitor setup approx 1/8 of it over laps on the left screen. This is
repeatable. I can get it to display to work right by opening
preferencesscreen resolution option and clicking apply. However, when
I do this it puts the gnome-panels on the on one screen ( I use panels
on the both screens) and I have to relocate them back to the correct
  monitor.

Note: The initial desktop looks ok on both monitors. It is only the
applications (firefox, Places, terminal windows) that are affected on
the right screen. In addition, I am able to drag them to the left but
can not drag them right past the initial position.

2009-03-29 Thread ldm
Note: I was unable to fix this in Intrepid with tweeking and wound up
installing the nvidia drivers and manually configuring the xorg.conf. I
suspect that the only cure I will be able to use in Jaunty is to manually
configure the xorg.conf file.
I am using a ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe card with a BFG nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS OC

[Bug 311218] [NEW] intrepid locks up randomly when unattended

2008-12-24 Thread ldm
Public bug reported:

Intrepid 2.6.27-9-generic
All the currently available releases have been installed.

Intrepid randomly locks up when left unattended (no keyboard or mouse input)
preventing use of keyboard and mouse (sometimes it can set for hours and will
not lockup, other times only a few minutes are necessary). This requires a
forced reboot to regain control of system. I have tried turning off the screen
saver and setting the power control settings to never. Neither of these helped
with the problem. I will attach the xorg0.log. The problem is repeatable but
I have not found the conditions that initiate it.
Note: I have setup two different drives with Intrepid one with the default
xorg.conf setup and the other using the Nvidia restricted drives. Neither
setup takes care of the lockup problem.

I will also attach the .xsessions-errors file.

[Bug 178883] Re: Difference in reported signal strength with network monitor applet

2008-12-20 Thread ldm
I am running Intrepid (released version) with all the updates and the
nm-applet shows 14% signal strength and the Network monitor shows
average value of 59% signal strength, which is in good agreement with
the Vista (dual boot) value. Based on the performance I would say that
the network monitor signal strength is accurate. Oddly enough the
signal strength on the nm-applet does not very from the 14%. However,
network monitor varies from 56 to 61%.

Re: [Bug 287892] Re: adding contacts to evolution address book caused ubuntu to crash

2008-11-19 Thread ldm
This only happened the one time. I have not had any problems with it
since then. It completely restarted the system (reboot). No
unfortunately, I did not think to keep a copies of the log files.

On Wed, 2008-11-19 at 03:36 +, IanW wrote:
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
 Ubuntu better.

Did the system completely reboot (grub, bios, startup progress bar)?
Or did the system lose your work and take you back to the login screen?

Has this happened more than once? Does it happen during any particular
 activity? Is it reproducible?

Please understand that reproducing a bug is the best way to get it
fixed, and that unreproducible bugs may remain forever a mystery. Also,
the application you were using at the time of the crash may have been an
innocent bystander, unrelated to the crash. If you still have a
 /var/log/syslog and /var/log/dmesg and /var/log/Xorg.0.log showing the
crash, attaching those to the bug report would help a lot.

 Thanks in advance.

[Bug 287654] Re: gnome-panel will not display open windows in panel

2008-10-31 Thread ldm
After submiting the previous information I realized that the icons for
selecting the workspace only show color on half of the selected icon
when the problem occurs. If you select the configure display icon and
select the one of the two displayed monitor and move it to the other
side of the other monitor select apply and then move it back to the
original location and select apply it fixes the problem but both bottom
and top panels are displayed on one screen. This fixes both the half
colored icons in the workspace selector and the problem with the window
list not showing on the panel.

[Bug 287654] Re: gnome-panel will not display open windows in panel

2008-10-30 Thread ldm
In trying to discover what causes the problem I discovered that when the
application is pulled 2/3 the way onto the right panel (panel0) the
window list will display the icon for the open application (firefox or
whatever application is open) if I move it to the left screen it
display in the left screen window list. If I move it all the way into
the right screen it will no longer display on the right screen window
list. There appears to be a threshold for it to show where it must be
over 1/2 way on to the right screen but less than 100% on the right
screen.

The panel were originally setup two to each monitor, one top and one

startup both are on the screen 0. I am running with a nvidia type card
on a asus mother board. The problem is repeatable.

[Bug 287654] [NEW] gnome-panel will not display open windows in panel

2008-10-22 Thread ldm
Public bug reported:

Intrepid Beta, 64 bit

Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10

Gnome-panel windows list will not display open windows in panel. When a new
panel is created and the window list is added the gnome panel does not display
the window list. If the window list preferences are opened and show windows
from all work spaces is selected, then the windows for all panels do show.
However, if you reselect the show windows for the current work space they do
not. This change happened after the update on 10/22/08 (I performed the update
at 09:00 AM).

[Bug 284134] [NEW] intrepid partial upgrade broke update manager and evolution

2008-10-15 Thread ldm
Public bug reported:

Intrepid update problem
Icon indicated update was available. I selected it and it said that partial
upgrade was needed. Upgrade ran then stopped. I rebooted and found that
evolution was not working. I then tried to do and update. System kept telling
me it needed to do a partial upgrade I would click it to start it. It would
then tell me it did not need to be done. The last time it said that some files
need to be removed. I clicked on it to start the operation and then
update-manager quit working. In synaptic it tells me that update manager

[Bug 282436] [NEW] when network loses its connection I have shut down my network card and restart it to regain connection

2008-10-12 Thread ldm
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-network-admin

Description:Ubuntu intrepid (development branch) (Beta)
Release:8.10

When I lose my network connection I have to shut down my network card and
restart it in order to reconnect. I use the following file to do this.

#!/bin/bash
echo Restarting Network ...
sudo rmmod rtl8187
echo Successfully deactivated RTL8187
sleep 5
sudo modprobe rtl8187
sleep 5
echo Successfully activated RTL8187
sleep 5
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
echo Restarting network using init.d file

After this has run I can click on the network applet and select my
connection and it will reconnect.

I have attached a file giving the hardware listing for my machine. I
have tried to use the report a problem setup (apport) but it simply give
me the busy icon for a minute and shuts down. It does work when a crash
occures.
