Re: [Bug 539064] Re: "Safely remove drive" is waking-up my external HD

Is there any way that the drive can signal the OS about a spindown
going to happen? that way, the OS can flush changes *prior* the
spindown and the problem of "waking up" will be fixed.

[Bug 539064] [NEW] "Safely remove drive" is waking-up my external HD

2010-03-15 Thread liorda
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I have an external Western Digital hard-drive, with its own power
supply. After a while without reading\writing from\to it, the HD spins-
down (stops making noises) to save power, and wakes up again only when
being used again.

It have one partition, formated as ntfs.

The bug is that if the drive is "sleeping" and I left-click the HD icon
on the desktop and choosing "safley remove drive" from the menu, it
wakes-up (with the usual delay), and only then unmounts and powers-off.

The desired behavior is that the operating system will notice the HD is
sleeping, and will not wake it up just to unmount it. Instead it should
unmount it without waking it up.

This will overcome the noticeable delay and the power consumption of
waking-up the drive in vain.

Re: [Bug 154044] Re: Ubiquity should have a "try again" button for media-error problems

2008-09-14 Thread liorda
So the kernel shouldn't lock the drive, or unlock it and wait for the
user to reinsert it after cleaning. It happened to me numerous times
before, with data cds, music cd and even dvds. Cleaning the drive's
"laser eye" prevent errors when reading/writing. Retrying with the same
dust balls in the drive won't help. IMHO Ubiquity should even _suggest_
cleaning the drive, and then retry.

And I can't see any different factors that could cause my error
described above.

Thanks.

[Bug 251620] Re: openssh-server is unable to receive connections on some ports

Oops...

It turned out that my regular user (not root) started sshd with that
port number. and since only root allowed to open "high" ports, the
connection got terminated.

1. why did sshd / ubuntu allowed the regular user to even start the service,
when it's clear no connections will be received?
2. can't the second sshd instance detect such a port collision, and warn about
it?

[Bug 205992] Re: hardy cacert RA niet seen by firefox -3

2008-06-05 Thread liorda
Hi Alexanser,

I believe whoever installs the ca-certificates package really wants to
trust the CAs included in it, *system wide*.

As a maintainer of websites that uses cacert certificates, It's much
easier to ask the user to install that package rather to install the
certificate itself. It's even more important since now firefox won't
even let you browse the page without the ca certificate installed.

this bug is not about the default certificates installed with firefox.
it is about whether or not to allow to user the easily (and knowingly)
trust more CA (the most common ones) to ssl and internet browsers.

please tell me if i'm missing the point.

thanks,

[Bug 237157] [NEW] scaletempo audiofilter is missing

[Bug 200343] [NEW] context menu is missing when the first word is misspelled in a numbers/bullets list

2008-03-09 Thread liorda
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I've created a list of items (numbered or bulleted):
1. first tree
2. second car
3. tihrd lemon
4. forth dog

the third line has a spelling error on the first word of it. i wanted to
change the formmating of the numbers, so i right-clicked on the gray-
lighted number (3 in this example).

I expected to see the context menu of the list.
when actually happened is that the first (misspelled) word on that item was
briefly highlighted, and the context menu of the spelling error for that word
appeared and instantly disappeared.

clicking on any other number popped to right, expected, context menu.

[Bug 157989] Re: Please add an option to reverse order of print when selecting multipages per side

2008-03-06 Thread liorda
It wouldn't help.

For example, a user wants to print 4 pages on single page, but with
specific order: first page on upper right, second on upper left, third
on lower right and forth on lower left. This is the purpose of my bug
(wishlist) report, and just reversing the printing order won't fix it.

Sorry for the comparison, but see attached image for implementation on
other software.

[Bug 195496] [NEW] can't sort by number of albums per artist

2008-02-25 Thread liorda
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: listen

I want to sort my music collection by the number of albums per artist -
and I can't!

Winamp (for example) has the option to sort your media library by number
of albums per artist / number of songs per genre / number of songs per
artist etc.

This should be very useful (at least for me)!

[Bug 173701] kdevelop should open folded code in case of search match

2007-12-03 Thread liorda
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdevelop

I'm using gutsy.

if I fold some function, and then try to search some text within that
function, the match doesn't unfold the function! a user can't know what
the matching string is.

wanted behavior: if there's a match somewhere in a folded section of the
text, kdevelop should unfold it and highlight the match (as is does when
the match is not folded). if the user clicked "next match", without any
change to the code, kdevelop should fold that section (to restore to its
folded state).

[Bug 157989] Please add an option to reverse order of print when selecting multipages per side

2007-10-28 Thread liorda
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

When i want to print a pdf document which is written in hebrew in
multipage mode, i would like to have the option to reverse the order of
pages. the default and only order available when selecting 2 pages per
side, for example, is that the first page is on the left of the page,
and the next page is on the right. for hebrew documents it's not
convenient, since it's written right-to-left.

Please add an option to reverse print order in page, i.e. when a user wants to
print 2 pages per side, a combobox would appear and ask for the order: "right
to left", "left to right".
If the user choses 4 pages per side, the options will be: "right to left, up to
down", "right to left, down to up".

Thanks.

[Bug 157591] External USB drive is unmounting itself after some idle hours

Public bug reported:

The problem is with external WD USB2.0 hard-drive:
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=219&language=en

Running Ubuntu Gutsy.

When connecting the drive for the first time, all works great. If I keep
using it (reading/writing) - no problems at all. But If I stop accessing
it for some time (1-2 hours), it unmounts itself, without any warning.

before connecting the drive:
$ ls /dev/sd*
/dev/sda /dev/sda1 /dev/sda2 /dev/sda3

after connecting it:
$ ls /dev/sd*
/dev/sda /dev/sda1 /dev/sda2 /dev/sda3 /dev/sdb /dev/sdb1

the next lines appears on /var/log/syslog after connecting the drive:

[Bug 154044] Re: Ubiquity should have a "try again" button for media-error problems

2007-10-22 Thread liorda
Sometimes a "faulty CD" is just a CD with little dust on it. From my
experience, Many times cleaning the CD and trying again helped.

And it did show the error before exiting.

[Bug 139138] Re: [gutsy] flash plugin reported as installed when it actually failed

2007-10-19 Thread liorda
I confirm this bug on Gutsy final release (x86).

If there's a fix, why not explaining it as a comment?

[Bug 154054] OpenOffice 2.3 on Gutsy can't restrict permission for PDF using blank password

2007-10-18 Thread liorda
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org-writer

When Trying to export a document ino a PDF file, under the "Security"
tab, you can restrict some permissions to the pdf file. When clicking
"Set permission password", it says the password can be empty, but when
setting an empty password, the permissions options are inchangable!

Only when using non-empty password the options are available.

I should also mention that the "check CD for errors" option on the boot
menu of Gutsy did not find any errors.

[Bug 154044] Ubiquity should have a "try again" button for media-error problems

2007-10-18 Thread liorda
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

When trying to install the Gutsy live-cd to the hard-drive, i get Errno
5: Input/output error, and the installer exits, leaving me with an
unusable HD.

This is probably a faulty CD. Nevertheless, the application should give
the user a chance to clean the CD from dust or replace it, rather then
just exiting with that errornumber.

[Bug 121816] Hibernation disables the sound (even for windows)

2007-06-22 Thread liorda
Public bug reported:

I'm running feisty and XP in dual-boot configuration, using GRUB, on
Thinkpad R50e laptop.

After some hibernation tests (to disk and to RAM), I'm now at a point
where if I'm exiting linux using the normal "shutdown" process, the
sound is gone - in linux and windows.

When I booted into windows - the sound is reported to be working - all
drivers seem to work without error, but i can here no sound! The
recording function is working, so I'm guessing it's not the power supply
to the card.

When I'm booting into Linux - the same applies: the module seems to be
loaded, but i can't hear anything. recording is working.

The strangest thing is that i can "re-activate" the sound *in windows only*
using the following way:
1. booting into linux
2. hibernating to disk
3. booting into windows
