[Bug 108544] brightness is not restored after suspend and hibernation (hp compaq 7400)

2007-04-21 Thread lmierzej
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: acpi-support

I have Hp Compaq nx7400 laptop and after resume form suspend to ram and
hibernation to disk the brightness is not restored (I guess the
brightness is being reseted to the lowest possible value).

I can restore previous brightness by pressing "brightness up" key on the
keyboard. To set higher brightness I can also manually execute:
echo "X" > /proc/acpi/video/C080/C13F/brightness
where X can be one of these values: 100 51 30 37 44 51 58 65 72 79 86 93 100
(cat /proc/acpi/video/C080/C13F/brightness give this values, but echoing "100"
doesn't work and gives "bash: echo: write error: Invalid argument" error
message)

Another problem is that just after manual set of brightness level
"brightness up" and "brightness down" keys stop working :/

Maybe before suspend/hibernation some script could save current value of
/proc/acpi/video/C080/C13F/brightness
and after suspend/hibernation another script could restore it (echo to
/proc/acpi/video/C080/C13F/brightness).

I guess that "brightness up" and "brightness down" keys function
mechanically (bypass the operating system), because they do not change
value of /proc/acpi/video/C080/C13F/brightness.

[Bug 110233] [feisty] static configuration of wired network connection in NetworkManager dosen't work

2007-04-26 Thread lmierzej
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

After changing eth0 configuration from dhcp to static and filling all the forms
with ip, netmask and gateway I see "Changing interface configuration" message,
but the changes are not applied (ifconfig shows no ip for eth0, resolv.conf is
and route shows correct gateway). When I manually invoke:
/etc/init.d/network restart
everything works fine (so NetworkManager write changes into
/etc/network/interfaces, but maybe doesn't restart interfaces).

This problem happens every time after booting form feisty installation
live-cd and just after successful installation of feisty and booting
into it. I didn't manage to reproduce it after configuring network
settings with NetworkManger and manually (by ifconfig, route and
resolv.conf) for a couple of times.

[Bug 110233] Re: [feisty] static configuration of wired network connection in NetworkManager dosen't work

2007-04-26 Thread lmierzej
I have just made another test on fresh feisty installation form
ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386 live-cd.

By default my eth0 network interface is set to dhcp. After changing it
to static with NetworkManager applet and filling in ip, network and
gateway I can see "Changing interface configuration" message, but
ifconfig shows no ip for eth0, route shows exactly nothing (no route
defined). Only /etc/network/interfaces file is being updated correctly.
If in this situation I change eth0 back to dhcp and one more time to
static configuration everything starts to work correctly (ifconfig and
route give proper output)

Adding DNS server with NetworkManager creates correct resolv.conf file
every time.

I was able to easily reproduce this bug when booting from

more time to static everything was fine)

[Bug 110581] strange behavior and system hangs after a few minutes after resume form hibernation on hp compaq nx7400

2007-04-27 Thread lmierzej
Public bug reported:

I have HP Compaq nx7400 (Core 2 Duo, Intel GMA 950 graphics card).

After resume from hibernation every thing seems to work just fine,
but after a few moments strange things begun to happen:
-sometimes the system just hangs;
-sometimes only gnome stops responding (I can switch to console or log in by
ssh from another machine);
-sometimes gnome doesn't stop responding but gnome applications like terminal
or totem doesn't launch anymore
(surprisingly mplayer or eclipse work just fine, only "native" gnome
applications are affected);
-once after resume from hibernation I saw a notification which said about HAL
problems (I can't recall exact error);
-usually after resume from hibernation when I try to 'sudo /etc/init.d/gdm
restart' everything just hangs,
but once when I tried to 'sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart', just before system
hung I saw this: "[869.11600] BUG: soft lockup detected on CPU#0!";
-sometimes only one gnome applications hangs (when it hung I couldn't launch
any other gnome application, but once more mplayer and eclipse worked fine),
last time gnome-gnuchess hung and when I tried to 'killall gnome-gnuchess' it
didn't kill it and ps output showed gnome-gnuchess as 'defected' process

Please, could someone give me some instructions what can I do to locate
real source of the bug?

[Bug 110581] Re: strange behavior and system hangs after a few minutes after resume form hibernation on hp compaq nx7400

2007-04-28 Thread lmierzej
Thank you for your help!

I did a few more hibernation tests. Unfortunately /var/crash/ is always empty,
but once something new appeared in /var/log/messages (attached below,
usually /var/log/messages doesn't show anything strange).

As always, after resume from hibernation for a few moments everything seems
fine,
but strange things begun to happen with time (most often gnome just hangs,
keyboard and mouse stop responding, but I can login via ssh from another
machine
and then if I try to 'sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart' everything hangs).

I'm running feisty.

[Bug 110581] Re: strange behavior and system hangs after a few minutes after resume form hibernation on hp compaq nx7400

2007-04-28 Thread lmierzej
I tried to prepare 'dmesg' output just after resume.
After resume I have started a few gnome application and everything started to
behave strangely
(gnome hung), then I switched to console and
I've managed to do 'dmesg > dmesg_after_hibernation_when_problems_start'
and checked that file was created. Then I invoked 'killall Xorg' and everything
have totally frozen.
After reboot there was no file 'dmesg_after_hibernation_when_problems_start'!!!
The file vanished!
It was there I checked, I did 'cat dmesg_after_hibernation_when_problems_start'
and saw the output,
but after reboot the file was gone...

Now I will log through ssh from another machine and I will copy the
'dmesg' output just after problems start.

After creating 'dmesg_after_hibernation_when_problems_start' and coping it to
another machine
via ssh (I'm sure the file will vanish after reboot of source machine), I
invoked 'killall Xorg"
and then system totally hung (keyboard stopped responding, can't log in via
ssh). A few
seconds after this total freeze I saw on the console this:
'[969.936000] BUG: soft lockup detected on CPU#0!'

Thank you very much for your help!
If there is anything else I could do... I would be glad to do it!

In fresh Feisty Fawn installation (daily build 11 Apr 2007) the default
dpi for gdm was much bigger then 75 or 96 (that's why fonts are too
big). The workaround which worked was to change [server-Standard]

command=/usr/X11R6/bin/X -br -audit 0 -dpi 96

[Bug 114051] no way to disable same notification messages, no unified system for managing notifications

2007-05-11 Thread lmierzej
Public bug reported:

Everyone know that notification messages can be very helpful,
especially for new Ubuntu users, but there are many other Ubuntu users
that find notification messages somehow annoying.

Some notifications you can disable in program preferences (like in
rhythmbox), some in gconf-editor (like notify_fully_charged), but
unfortunately there are also many notifications that can't be disabled
at all :-( (like the one in NetworkManager that appears when you
successfully connect to wireless network).

I guess that there is some notification system in gnome (also I guess
that there is a little 'notification framework' which applications cat
use)... anyway it would be really great if there was a way to disable
all notifications at once.

And it would be outstanding if there was some kind of 'notification
manager' which would allow user to disable/enable every single
notification message in one place...

To sum up, user should be allowed to disable any notification message he
wishes to, but there are many notification messages in Ubuntu that can't
be disabled at all...

[Bug 65140] Gnome's vertical panel unusable;

2006-10-10 Thread lmierzej
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Vertical panel with Window List, Main Menu, Launchers, Workspace
Switcher etc is almost unsuable. Window List is too big, Launchers
icons are too big, Main Menu icon is too big. Almost every
component/aplet is messed up some how. It's almost impossible to use
wide vertical panel (about 100-150 px).

Vertical panel is very important for wide screen users (they have
additional space for wide vertical panel).

Maybe panel should behave like the one in Windows (since W98 working
great in vertical position).

[Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks

I have investigated this issue on two different laptops... both with fresh
installation of Gutsy.
On both laptops Load_Cycle_Count gets increased by 1 about every minute, which
is very bad...

Invoking 'sudo hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda" solves problem on first laptop.
Load_Cycle_Count not increasing for 10 minutes!
Invoking 'sudo hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda" solves problem on second laptop.
Load_Cycle_Count not increasing for 10 minutes!

For me this bug is not connected with laptop_mode...
I don't know where in Ubuntu are default hdparm settings...
but even if they are correct they do not work or are not applied...

I would be more then happy to make more tests or supply additional
informations...

I think that everyone who can should check his Load_Cycle_Count by
invoking 'smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda | grep Load_Cycle_Count' several
times for 5-10 minutes, then 'sudo hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda' and one more
'smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda | grep Load_Cycle_Count' several times for
5-10 minutes.

Hope this helps...

Can someone change importance of this bug to sane level. 'whislist' is
really ridiculous...

[Bug 44002] Re: Trivial actions are not appearing immediately

2007-06-12 Thread lmierzej
I have only noticed this annoying behavior in gnome main menu. In other
gnome apps everything seems fine.

[Bug 126447] Re: acpi thermal_zone

2008-05-20 Thread lmierzej
Unfortunately in Hardy Heron this misbehavior is still present... moreover you
can't change your trip_points any more :-(
Is there any way to disable TZ5? Or to fix this problem somehow? Maybe by
recompiling dsdt table?
