[Bug 202800] Re: Notebook monitor does not turn off when idle
"Strange is the fact that occasionally it works perfectly, and sometimes it fails completely." As it turns out, Ubuntu has a strange way of defining idleness. Everyone else uses human input (mouse, keyboard, etc). Ubuntu is using cpu as well, and there is no way to unselect that part of it. So if your cpu is busy enough, you are not idle and the screen will not blank. [Bug 289322] [NEW] gnome-power-manager needs different idleness definition for turning off display
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager Currently, gnome-power-manager uses mouse and keyboard inactivity to determine idleness. As a second step, it then uses cpu load as an additional measure. So the computer is not considered idle unless the mouse, keyboard, and cpu are all idle. This definition is found in the gnome-power-manager manual for both Gutsy and Hardy. This is great for determining when to suspend or hibernate. But it is counter intuitive for turning off the display. There are a large number of bugs filed againt g-p-m for display blanking issues: not working at all, intermittent failure, other stuff. I believe it is because of the cpu criteria that no one is expecting. For display purposes, the computer can be considered idle when the user it not actively typing or mousing. This is the usual expected behavior. When I kick off a large compile and go off to lunch, it is annoying to return and find my backlight still at full brightness with no audience. It wastes power and longevity of the backlight. I propose that there should be two different algorithms for idleness. One for suspend/hibernate that uses cpu load, and another for display blanking that does not consider cpu load. ** Affects: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- gnome-power-manager needs different idleness definition for turning off display https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/289322 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I've had this problem too, but it has been solved. Perhaps you have the same problem I did. Is your screensaver on? If it is, TURN IT OFF. [Bug 202800] Re: Notebook monitor does not turn off when idle
I used to have this problem, but it is solved. Check to that see that your screensaver is OFF. The screensaver, even if you tell it to display a "blank screen", will turn on the backlight. Silly, yes, but it is what it is. So if you have an LCD, turn the screensaver off. In ubuntu: system->preferences-> uncheck "activate screensaver when computer id idle" Then, press "power management" on the bottom of the dialog. Here, check your setting for "Put display to sleep when inactive". This will turn off the backlight. -- Notebook monitor does not turn off when idle https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/202800 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I also get this on a 8.04 running on Dell Latitude d610. The only workaround I have found is to exit Thunderbird (using the mouse), and then just go back in. But that is not a very good workaround. Curious thing is that the problem is isolated to a particular message reply window for me. Even if I have other replies open, only one is affecting. But once it hits a new reply window, all new reply windows front that point forward will have the problem. [Bug 161960] Re: Add function to WinKey button on keyboard
Jo-Erlend, Super-L is better than Alt-F1 because it is a single key, not a combination key. Whether we like it or not, Windows has the largest marketshare on the desktop. Even if that is ignored, we can simply be pragmatic and look at the vast majority of keyboards out in the world. Although I use Unix and Linux most of the day, I am also forced to used Windows for various reasons. It would be Nice if basic operations, like getting to the menu, could be the same across both regimes. "What if Microsoft decides to change the keyboard shortcuts in another version; should we change ours too, to make sure Ubuntu still feels like a cheap Windows-copy?" I believe Microsoft will be unable to change the meaning of the Windows (aka Super-L) key, because of the large community of users that are already used to it. In my opinion, the key is basic, much like the position of the accelerator and brake pedal of a car. Why switch it if the current dominant provider already has it a certain way? Or, put it another way, why go out of the way to annoy new users? Or old users that have to use both environments. "Most people dislike the Start-menu Windows keyboard shortcuts, and very few will miss it." I don't believe most people like or dislike Windows CUA. They are simply used to it. No one wakes up every morning, and says "Wow, I really love that the my car's brake pedal is in the place that it is."
