[Bug 662422] Re: no audio - alsa plugin for pulse restarts constantly

2010-10-18 Thread lytles
i've installed google-chrome, and flash audio works fine. i've also
played mp3s inside firefox using the totem browser plugin. so it looks
like the problem is firefox + flash + pulseaudio + pulseaudio alsa
plugin

SOLVED: i had an old .mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so laying around
(copies in multiple user accounts which made this harder to notice). i
deleted this, and now audio appears to work correctly

[Bug 662422] [NEW] no audio - alsa plugin for pulse restarts constantly

2010-10-17 Thread lytles
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

pulseaudio appears to work fine with all application except flash. but
in flash, no sound is produced. in the applications tab for gnome-
volume-control, it appears to show up as: alsa plugin [ plugin
container ], but the entry flickers. i assume that this means that it
is starting, exiting, and restarting ad nauseum

i've run pulseaudio with the -v and --log-level=4 flags, and i see and
endless repeat of: created input, lots of info, freeing input, freed
plugin, connection died. these loops are happening at 20hz (eg, 207
occurrences in 10 seconds of youtube). here's a clip of one of the logs:

I: sink-input.c: Created input 169 ALSA Playback on

[Bug 60040] Re: manpage says xhost +username should work

2010-10-14 Thread lytles
why is this wishlist ??? the manpage is wrong, plain and simple. maybe
the ability to specify the user is the behavior that ubuntu ultimately
wants to adopt, but in the meantime, the manpage should be fixed. it
says one thing, the application does something different ... it's a bug.
maybe you don't have the time or desire to fix either the application or
the man page, but at the least leave it as a bug (ie not a wishlist)
here so that us users know what we're dealing with ...

this has been wrong for 4 years now - i'm using maverick

[Bug 551423] Re: usb drive doesn't automount most of the time

2010-03-29 Thread lytles
i tried the usb drive about 10 times before reporting the bug, with no
success. after running the ubuntu-bug storage program and reporting
the bug, the usb drive started automounting correctly

on another machine, the drive wouldn't automount until i ran
ubuntu-bug. in that case, the drive automounted while the bug program
was running.

in other words, i think the ubuntu-bug storage program somehow
fixes things. i assume the fix is temporary, but still - it should
be a clue

[Bug 449744] Re: Firefox crashes when attempting to load Firebug 1.5 alphas

2010-01-28 Thread lytles
appalling ... you had a known incompatibility that initially involved
alpha software; you did nothing for 3 months; your custom build of
firefox was set to automatically upgrade extensions; firebug 1.5 went
gold and your custom build automatically upgraded; all hell breaks out;
and ubuntu blames everyone else

awesome. yes, it's not ubuntu's fault that firebug 1.5 seg faults
firefox. it is ubuntu's fault for making a release that was known to be
doomed for anyone using firebug installed in the ubuntu-approved way.
quality control FTL. and serves you right for ignoring the initial
report

terrible

[Bug 449744] Re: Firefox crashes when attempting to load Firebug 1.5 alphas

2010-01-28 Thread lytles
not technically your responsibility ? wtf ... it's a feature of the
software, of your own custom build. click the menu, find addons,
install. how is ubuntu _not_ responsible for that ? does the user have
any way of knowing that anything is the Ubuntu approved way ? no

if you provided a browser, and were up front about it's limitations,
made it clear that it wasn't firefox, then you wouldn't have a
responsibility to fix it. but you didn't do that - you made a custom
build and packaged it as _firefox_. not a-browser-derived-from-firefox-
that-might-work, not ubuntus-broken-browser. no. firefox. and as such it
should work like firefox. if something is broken that works in the real
firefox, it _is_ your responsibility

rather than acknowledge that, you're blaming firefox. or firebug. or the user
beautiful

can i understand you not fixing the problem ? yes
can i understand you not taking responsibility for the problem ? no

[Bug 267958] Re: hang after modifying cpufreq/* after suspend/resume on amd x2/690g

2009-08-07 Thread lytles
i am no longer seeing the hangs that i report above. i've been
suspending and resuming on a regular basis for the last few months. i've
changed 2 things - i upgraded the firmware and ubuntu. i believe that
the firmware upgrade was what made the difference

i have seen potential filesystem corruption on 2 occasions - a git repo
became unusable, and after resume i got a blank screen and a weird
error: end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector

no idea if this is related to the resume issues, or a failing hard drive

Linux version 2.6.28-14-generic
i'll try to remember to lookup the firmware version next time i reboot, but i
think it's 1803 (i used whatever was the latest at the time i tried upgrading)

[Bug 267958] [NEW] hang after modifying cpufreq/* after suspend/resume on amd x2/690g

2008-09-08 Thread lytles
Public bug reported:

machine:
amd x2 b3-2350 (low power, 45w), ati x1250, asus m2a-vm hdmi, 4g

i can suspend and resume, with two problems:
1. the virtual terminals are garbled after a resume
2. writing to any of the files in /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq results
in an immediate crash / hang

i've tested this two ways. normally i use fglrx (restricted module) and
X. in this case, the vt's are garbled but X works fine. to verify that
fglrx wasn't part of the problem i booted with init=/bin/bash and set up
the network (leaving fglrx unloaded, ie no X). in this case the vt's
weren't garbled, but the monitor complained about bad frequency so i
turned it off and ssh'd in.

in both methods, the suspend/resume succeeded (other than the vt issue)
but as soon as the cpufreq files are changed, the machine crashes -
can't ping, no ctrl-alt-delete, no sysrq, keyboard led's don't change,
...

2008-05-08 Thread lytles
another: trying to prefix a grep with a find

grep -r stuff.*stuff

then add at the beginning find comp and hitting tab

find comtabgrep -r stuff.*stuff

this kills the current line (and it doesn't even go to history, so
potentially you could lose a significant amount of work if you'd been
building up a big line)

here's what you see after tab:
find combash: no match: stuff.*stuff

this should complete correctly (i understand it's a corner), but at
worst it should do nothing (and never kill without history the entire

[Bug 194419] Re: error message when no completions and failglob is on

2008-05-02 Thread lytles
thanks mika / adw - i've been fighting this for a while. in 7.10 i got
around it by selectively enabling completion, but this is a whole lot
nicer. but then 8.04 broke my work-around. once i narrowed it down to
the failglob shopt i found your page. i just applied the patches and
things are working much nicer.

for the sake of anyone googling, i was seeing:

i would type: sudo apt-get TAB
and i'd see: sudo apt-get bash: no match: COMP_WORDS[2-1]

the patches above fix it for me.

is there an easy way to force a completion, eg so that i could run it
with a -x option or with bashdb ? i'm sure i'll find a few more of these
problems :)
