similar problem on an ASUS PRO75
though i'm using kdm, the screen brightness slider hs to be "touched" to 
restore full brightness
the screen dims to minimum when I
-boot
-close the lid
-start anysoftware using a graphic surface (mplayer , SDL)

its a brand newlaptop, first install  : 2.6.28-17-generic , ubuntu
jaunty

also get this in log :

pretty sure it's related

the xorg.conf is virtually empty
havent got a clue where to start... any idea of a quick fix?
any idea where it comes from ? (kernel? intel driver? Acpi?)
this bug makes the laptop near unusable
